The best smart lock depends first on your door and your backup-entry plan. For a discreet premium installation, start with Level Lock Pro. Apple users who want hands-free approach unlocking should compare Schlage Sense Pro. Aqara Smart Lock U400 is the feature-rich choice for fingerprint, UWB, rechargeable power, and Matter support, while an August retrofit lock is the better direction for renters or anyone who wants to keep the existing exterior key cylinder.

This is a researched 2026 buying guide, not a report of testing performed by Bettesworth Construction. Consumer Reports says its 2026 roundup is based on lab testing across Wi-Fi, fingerprint, Apple Home Key, Bluetooth-only, and retrofit categories. Tom's Guide reported more than two months of hands-on testing with Schlage Sense Pro, and TechRadar evaluated August Smart Lock Pro. Manufacturer specifications are identified as such and should not be confused with independent security or reliability tests.

Quick picks

There is no universally best smart lock. A lock that is ideal for an Apple Home household may be a poor choice for a door that needs a physical key, and a lock with excellent features is still a bad purchase if its interior mechanism does not fit the existing deadbolt. Use this shortlist by situation rather than treating it as a single ranking.

Best for Recommended model or category Why it stands out Main limitation
Premium discreet design Level Lock Pro Electronics are hidden inside the door; supports Apple Home Key, Matter-over-Thread, touch access, NFC fobs, guest sharing, activity history, and remote control with the appropriate bridge or hub. Higher price and more demanding compatibility and hub checks; no keypad.
Hands-free Apple entry Schlage Sense Pro Combines Apple Home Key, Matter-over-Thread, keypad codes, and Schlage's UWB-based Converge approach-unlocking modes. No keyway, so keypad, emergency-power, battery-alert, and household-access plans are essential.
Fingerprint and UWB features Aqara Smart Lock U400 Offers fingerprint, passcode, NFC card, mechanical-key, UWB, Apple Home Key, Matter, and major smart-home-platform support. Rechargeable battery life, availability, regional features, and manufacturer performance claims need careful verification.
Renters or preserved exterior keys August Smart Lock Pro or August Wi-Fi Smart Lock Retrofit designs replace the interior part of a compatible deadbolt while retaining the outside cylinder and key. Compatibility depends heavily on the existing deadbolt, interior clearance, alignment, and bridge or adapter configuration.
Mainstream keypad and Wi-Fi comparison Schlage Encode family Provides a familiar keypad/Wi-Fi route managed through the Schlage Home app. Encode, Encode Plus, and other variants do not necessarily share the same Apple Home Key or Matter capabilities.
Configuration-heavy comparison Yale Assure Yale offers app control, door-status sensing, auto-lock and unlock, guest access, activity monitoring, and partner-ecosystem integration. Assure features vary by exact model and module; the model number matters more than the family name.

For most homeowners, the buying decision should narrow to four questions: Does the lock fit the door, what happens when the battery or internet fails, which household devices must operate it, and whether the physical-security evidence is independent or merely a manufacturer specification?

1. Level Lock Pro: best premium invisible-design lock

Level Lock Pro is the most discreet option in this guide. Its electronics sit inside the door rather than in a large exterior touchscreen, so the outside can retain a conventional deadbolt appearance. That makes it particularly attractive for carefully finished front doors, historic-looking hardware, or homeowners who do not want a prominent keypad.

Level lists Apple Home Key, Matter-over-Thread, built-in door-status detection, touch access, NFC key fobs, guest sharing, activity history, auto-lock and unlock, a physical key, and remote control when a Wi-Fi bridge or compatible Matter-over-Thread hub is present. The company lists a $349 price, an ANSI Grade 1/A rating, BHMA AAA certification, and an estimated nine-to-12-month battery range from one CR2 battery. Those battery and certification details are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent results from this guide.

The trade-off is that the invisible design removes the convenience of a built-in keypad. Before buying, confirm that the household is comfortable with Apple Home Key, touch access, an NFC fob, a physical key, or the manufacturer's app. Apple Home Key also requires a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch; it is not a feature every phone can use simply because the lock supports Apple Home.

Minimize obstacles such as walls, metal objects, and interference sources for a stronger connection.
  • App Control with Real-Time Access:Control smart lock remotely via the Philips Home Access App: lock/unlock, manage user codes/fingerprints, check your door lock status, and monitor access history in real time, etc, whether you’re at work or on vacation.

  • 0.3S Fingerprint Fast Access:With this fingerprint keyless entry door lock, unlock your door in 0.3 seconds with fast, secure biometric access. Store multiple fingerprints for family and trusted visitors.

Level identifies compatibility requirements including a 2.375- or 2.75-inch backset, a 1.75-to-2-inch door thickness, and a standard 2.125-inch bore. The door must also use a compatible American-standard deadbolt. These dimensions are not a substitute for the manufacturer's compatibility checker: mortise locks, multipoint systems, unusual trim, and misaligned strikes may still prevent installation.

Installation quality matters especially with a concealed mechanism. Level's guidance emphasizes aligning the strike plate correctly and testing the bolt with the door open before relying on the lock. A motor that has to fight a sagging door or a tight strike can create avoidable battery and reliability problems.

Choose it if: you want the cleanest appearance and already use Apple Home or Matter-compatible equipment.

Skip it if: visitors need a simple exterior code, your deadbolt fit is uncertain, or you do not want to buy or configure a bridge or hub for remote access.

2. Schlage Sense Pro: best for hands-free Apple entry

Schlage Sense Pro is the more feature-forward Apple choice when approach unlocking is the priority. It supports Matter-over-Thread, Apple Home Key, keypad codes, one-touch locking, remote management through the Schlage Home app, and Schlage's UWB-based Converge technology.

Schlage says Converge evaluates speed, trajectory, and movement toward the door. Its Intuitive, Touch, and Delay modes are intended to provide different levels of hands-free entry. This is a convenience feature, not proof that the lock is physically harder to defeat or that approach unlocking will behave identically for every household, phone, installation, or software version.

Schlage lists Sense Pro from $399 and says the lock has no keyway. That design makes the backup plan a purchase decision rather than an afterthought. Set up keypad codes for household members and trusted visitors, understand the emergency-power procedure, enable battery alerts, and decide what access remains if a phone is lost, a device is out of charge, or the app is unavailable.

Tom's Guide reported in August 2026 that it had tested Sense Pro on a door for more than two months. That supports describing the product as covered by published hands-on testing from Tom's Guide; it does not mean Bettesworth Construction performed the same installation or reached the same result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: your household is heavily invested in Apple devices and values hands-free entry more than a physical-key fallback.

Skip it if: you want a traditional keyway, have a mixed household that will not use the keypad consistently, or cannot provide a reliable Thread and Matter setup.

3. Aqara Smart Lock U400: best feature-rich biometric alternative

Aqara Smart Lock U400 packs more entry methods into one lock than the other leading options here. Its feature set includes UWB approach unlocking, Apple Home Key, Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key when connected through Samsung SmartThings, fingerprint access, passcodes, NFC cards, app control, mechanical keys, Matter-over-Thread, and integrations with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings.

Aqara says the fingerprint reader can store up to 50 fingerprints and advertises recognition accuracy of up to 98.6 percent. Both figures are manufacturer claims. Storage capacity tells you how many credentials can be enrolled; it does not establish that fingerprint entry is safer, faster, or more dependable than a key or code in your particular environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The U400 uses a rechargeable battery with USB-C charging and emergency charging. Aqara advertises up to six months per charge, says the lock is BHMA certified, gives the exterior panel an IP65 rating, and describes a built-in gyroscope for auto-lock. The lock is designed for single-cylinder deadbolts. As with any smart lock, advertised battery life depends on usage, connectivity, temperature, settings, and the condition of the door.

Aqara introduced the U400 at CES 2026 and said it would be sold through Aqara's website, Amazon in the United States and Canada, Apple retail channels in specified markets, Best Buy in the United States, and selected retailers. Recheck the current price, stock, exact model, phone requirements, and regional availability immediately before purchase.

Choose it if: you want several independent entry methods, biometric access, rechargeable power, and broad platform compatibility.

Skip it if: you prefer a simpler lock, do not want to manage a rechargeable battery, or need a product with a long track record of independently published testing for the exact model.

4. August retrofit locks: best for preserving the existing key

An August retrofit lock is a different kind of installation. Instead of replacing the exterior cylinder and deadbolt hardware, it typically replaces the interior operating mechanism while allowing the outside key cylinder to remain. That makes the category particularly useful for renters, homeowners in shared buildings, and anyone who wants to retain the same physical key.

Consumer Reports treats retrofit locks as a distinct category and includes two retrofit picks in its 2026 roundup. TechRadar describes August Smart Lock Pro as compatible with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa when paired with the additional Connect adapter, with remote locking, unlocking, and hands-free operation. Do not assume that every August-branded model has the same wireless radios, battery arrangement, bridge requirement, or smart-home features. The August Smart Lock Pro and August Wi-Fi Smart Lock should be checked separately.

Before ordering an August retrofit lock, inspect the existing deadbolt from both sides. Confirm the brand and model, the interior mounting plate, the available clearance around the thumb turn, the backset, the door thickness, the cylinder type, and whether the bolt moves freely without the motor. A retrofit unit can preserve the exterior key and still fail to fit the interior hardware.

Choose it if: preserving existing keys, avoiding exterior hardware changes, or obtaining landlord approval is more important than having a built-in keypad.

5. Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, and Kwikset Halo Touch: the comparison set

These families are useful comparison points, but exact model numbers and modules matter.

Schlage Encode and Encode Plus

Schlage identifies Encode as a Wi-Fi smart-lock family managed through the Schlage Home app. A keypad and built-in Wi-Fi can be straightforward for households that want codes and remote access without assembling a separate bridge. However, do not transfer features from one Encode variant to another. Confirm whether the specific product is Encode, Encode Plus, or another Encode model before stating that it supports Apple Home Key, Matter, or a particular wireless protocol.

Yale Assure

Yale's Assure materials describe app control, door-status sensing, auto-lock and unlock, guest access, activity monitoring, and integration with partner ecosystems. Yale sells multiple Assure configurations, so compatibility with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and other systems can depend on the module and model number. Treat a retailer title saying Yale Assure as a starting point, not as a complete specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kwikset Halo Touch

Kwikset Halo Touch is the fingerprint-oriented comparison. Kwikset says it can store up to 100 fingerprints for up to 50 users. That is a capacity specification, not evidence that fingerprints are inherently more secure or more reliable than keys, codes, or NFC credentials. Fingerprint performance can also be affected by enrollment quality, wet or dirty fingers, gloves, and whether a visitor has been enrolled.

Consumer Reports' 2026 testing roundup is valuable when comparing these broader categories because it says its lab work considers smartphone alerts, remote locking and unlocking, geofencing, voice control through major platforms, shareable electronic keys, access logs, and tamper alarms. It also includes models from August, Eufy, Kwikset, Schlage, Wyze, and Yale. The exact lab results and model-level scores should be checked in the current Consumer Reports coverage rather than inferred from the brand family.

Compatibility checklist: check the door before the feature list

A smart lock is an electromechanical replacement for a door component. Start with measurements and construction, then compare apps and integrations.

  1. Identify the lock type. Most products in this guide are designed for a single-cylinder deadbolt: a key cylinder outside and a thumb turn inside. Mortise locks, rim locks, interconnected locks, and multipoint door systems require different products or may not be supported.
  2. Measure the backset. Common deadbolt backsets are 2.375 and 2.75 inches, but the lock must support the measurement on your door. Do not rely on a product photo or a retailer's generic compatibility label.
  3. Measure door thickness. Level Lock Pro, for example, lists a 1.75-to-2-inch door-thickness requirement. Other models can differ.
  4. Check the bore and edge preparation. Level lists a standard 2.125-inch bore. Confirm the bore diameter, edge bore, faceplate, and available space behind the door trim.
  5. Check the bolt and strike. The bolt should extend and retract smoothly by hand. A misaligned strike, compressed weather seal, sagging door, or tight frame can make a smart motor stall or repeatedly retry.
  6. Check interior clearance. Retrofit locks need room around the inside thumb turn and mounting plate. Measure clearance near glass, trim, screens, and nearby walls.
  7. Check the manufacturer's model-specific tool. Use the manufacturer's compatibility checker and installation guide before a retailer's compatibility statement. Save the model number and module details before ordering.

For a front-door purchase, search by the actual construction and access requirement, not only by a broad phrase such as smart locks for front door. A lock advertised for a standard American deadbolt may not fit a European-profile cylinder, mortise case, or multipoint patio-door mechanism.

Retrofit versus full deadbolt replacement

Consideration Retrofit Full replacement
Exterior appearance Usually keeps the existing exterior cylinder and key. May add a keypad, touchscreen, fingerprint reader, or new exterior escutcheon.
Best fit Renters, shared buildings, and owners preserving existing keys. Homeowners wanting a new keypad, new cylinder, or a complete hardware refresh.
Compatibility risk Depends on the existing deadbolt and interior thumb-turn geometry. Depends on door preparation, bore, backset, thickness, strike, and alignment.
Backup entry Usually retains the exterior physical key, subject to the existing cylinder. May use a key, code, phone, fingerprint, NFC credential, or emergency power depending on model.
Connectivity May require a bridge or adapter for remote operation. May have built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Thread, but exact configuration varies.

Retrofit does not automatically mean easier. It can make the outside installation less disruptive, but the interior adapter still has to turn the bolt reliably. Full replacement gives you more control over the entire lockset but may require changing keys and verifying more dimensions.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, and Matter-over-Thread explained

Wi-Fi

Built-in Wi-Fi can simplify remote locking, unlocking, alerts, and app access because the lock can connect directly to the home network. The convenience can come with greater battery demand. A strong router signal near the door and a sensible battery-alert policy matter more than the word Wi-Fi on the box.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is well suited to nearby phone control and can reduce the power burden compared with continuously connected Wi-Fi. A Bluetooth-only lock generally needs a compatible bridge or hub for remote control while you are away. Check whether the bridge is included, optional, discontinued, or limited to a particular generation.

  • ADVANCED SECURITY: Secure, encrypted connection; built-in, customizable alarm for door movement and forced entry attempts; fingerprint-resistant touchscreen; certified highest residential Security, Durability and Finish rating by BHMA industry experts
  • EASY INSTALL: Install in minutes with just a screwdriver, no hardwiring required; Snap ‘n Stay design helps keep the lock on the door so both hands are free; fits standard doors with 1-3/8 in to 1-3/4 in door thickness and 2-3/8 in or 2-3/4 in backset

Z-Wave

Z-Wave locks normally communicate through a compatible smart-home hub rather than directly through a phone. This can be a good fit for an existing Z-Wave installation, but hub support, regional radio frequencies, lock inclusion procedures, and remote-access behavior vary. Do not buy a Z-Wave version of a lock assuming it will work with every Matter or Wi-Fi hub.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matter-over-Thread

Matter is the common smart-home control standard; Thread is the low-power mesh network used by many Matter devices. A Matter-over-Thread lock still needs a compatible Matter controller and a Thread border router for the functions your household wants, particularly remote access. Matter improves the chance of cross-platform compatibility, but it does not remove the need to check the phone, operating system, hub, border-router, and regional requirements.

Level Lock Pro and Aqara U400 document hub or controller requirements for Matter-based remote access. Schlage Sense Pro also uses Matter-over-Thread. The practical question is not simply whether the lock says Matter; it is whether your existing Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings setup contains the required controller and Thread equipment.

Backup entry and dead-battery planning

Never install a smart lock without deciding how you will enter during the most inconvenient failure. A phone app and an internet connection are not a fail-safe backup.

  • Physical key: the simplest fallback, but only available on models with a keyway and only useful if someone can reach the key.
  • Keypad code: practical for families, cleaners, contractors, and guests, but unavailable on a lock without a keypad and vulnerable to forgotten or poorly managed codes.
  • Apple Home Key: convenient for compatible iPhone and Apple Watch users, but not a universal replacement for a key or code.
  • Fingerprint: fast for enrolled users, but it requires a clean enrollment and a secondary method for visitors, wet fingers, gloves, and sensor problems.
  • NFC card or fob: useful for people who do not carry a phone, provided a spare credential is stored securely.
  • Emergency power: some locks provide an external emergency-charging contact or USB-C procedure. Learn where it is and keep the required cable or power source available.

Sense Pro has no keyway, so its keypad and emergency-power procedure deserve special attention. Level Lock Pro has a physical key and can use touch, NFC fobs, or compatible Apple devices. Aqara U400 includes mechanical keys and USB-C emergency charging. The right choice is the one whose backup method your household will actually maintain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery life: treat advertised numbers as estimates

Battery-life claims are not directly comparable unless the locks are used under the same conditions. Wi-Fi activity, remote commands, automatic locking, UWB or Bluetooth behavior, temperature, signal quality, door friction, and the number of daily cycles can all change the result.

Model Published power information What to plan for
Level Lock Pro Level advertises nine to 12 months from one CR2 battery. Keep a compatible CR2 lithium battery available and monitor alerts; verify the exact battery requirement for the purchased model.
Aqara Smart Lock U400 Aqara advertises up to six months per charge and includes USB-C charging and emergency charging. Establish a charging schedule and keep the emergency-power method accessible.
Other smart locks Battery type and claimed runtime vary by model and connection method. Check the exact manual rather than assuming every lock uses AA cells or has the same runtime.

BHMA's A156.33-2024 overview describes a method for verifying manufacturer battery-performance claims under different usage models. That kind of standardized testing is useful context, but a quoted maximum remains an estimate for a particular configuration. A door that binds at the strike can drain batteries much faster than a correctly aligned door.

Smart features do not automatically mean better physical security

A smart lock adds access-management and convenience features; it does not automatically make the door, frame, strike, or deadbolt more resistant to forced entry. Evaluate the mechanical hardware separately from the electronics.

BHMA says its certification evaluates security, durability, and finish, and residential deadbolt standards include ANSI/BHMA A156.40. Level lists an ANSI Grade 1/A rating and BHMA AAA certification for Level Lock Pro, but those are manufacturer-published credentials in this context. They should not be presented as proof that the lock will withstand every attack or installation condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent testing is a separate category of evidence. Consumer Reports says its lab evaluates resistance to kick-in attacks, drilling, and picking, in addition to smart features. A manufacturer's claim about fingerprint accuracy, IP rating, battery duration, UWB behavior, grade, or certification should therefore be kept separate from a publication's lab or hands-on findings.

TEEHO TE001 Keyless Entry Deadbolt with Keypad for Front Door, Matte Black
  • Passcode Entry: This keypad lock offers 20 access codes for family use and a temporary code for single-use guest entry
  • One-Time Code: A one-time PIN code can be set for door opening and will automatically be deleted after use
  • Smart Locking: Features an automatic door lock that can be set to lock in 10-99 seconds (off by default) and one-touch auto-lock by pressing and holding any key on the keypad for 2 seconds
  • Long Battery Life & Low Battery Indicator: Powered by 4 AA batteries (not included), lasts up to 365 days. A red light indicator alerts you when battery level drops below 15%
  • Security Deadbolt: Provides reliable home protection with its sturdy aluminum alloy construction, weather resistance (IP54), durability, anti-peeping user code protection, low battery indicator, and solid lock cylinder

For a construction-quality installation, pay attention to the whole opening: a properly aligned strike, a door that closes without forcing the bolt, sound surrounding material, and secure mounting are all important. Test the lock with the door open before closing it, then repeat the test with the door closed while someone remains inside. Never hand a visitor a code until you have confirmed that the code works and that the lock can be manually overridden as intended.

Installation and commissioning checklist

  1. Photograph the existing deadbolt and measure the door before removing anything.
  2. Confirm the exact model, module, regional version, and included accessories.
  3. Check that the door closes naturally and that the existing bolt is not rubbing the strike.
  4. Install the lock with the door open first.
  5. Run calibration or handing setup exactly as the manufacturer specifies.
  6. Test locking and unlocking from the interior, exterior, app, and every intended backup method.
  7. Test the keypad, fingerprint reader, NFC card or fob, Apple Home Key, and emergency-power process if your model includes them.
  8. Enable battery warnings, door-status notifications, activity logging, and auto-lock only after manual operation is reliable.
  9. Create individual guest codes or credentials instead of sharing one permanent household code.
  10. Keep a physical key, spare credential, or emergency battery procedure available outside the home without creating an obvious security weakness.

How the evidence should be read

Consumer Reports' 2026 roundup is the strongest broad comparison source in this dossier because it says it tested locks in the lab across multiple categories and evaluated features such as alerts, remote control, geofencing, voice platforms, electronic keys, logs, and tamper alarms. Use its model-level results when making claims about kick-in, drilling, picking, or measured smart-function performance.

Tom's Guide's reported two-month test of Sense Pro is useful hands-on evidence for that particular product. TechRadar's evaluation of August Smart Lock Pro supports its retrofit and ecosystem positioning. Neither publication's reported work should be rewritten as testing performed by this site.

Level, Schlage, Aqara, Yale, and Kwikset specifications remain useful for understanding features and compatibility, but they are not independent test results. In particular, treat battery life, fingerprint accuracy, UWB behavior, IP ratings, capacity figures, certifications, and security grades as claims or credentials that require the correct attribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are smart locks safer than standard deadbolts?

Not automatically. A smart lock can improve access control with temporary codes, activity logs, and alerts, but electronic features do not by themselves increase resistance to kick-in, drilling, or picking. Compare independent physical-attack testing with the lock's mechanical certification, and inspect the door, frame, strike, and installation.

Will a smart lock work if the Wi-Fi goes down?

Local entry may continue through a physical key, keypad, Bluetooth connection, fingerprint, NFC credential, or Apple Home Key, depending on the model. Remote control and cloud-based notifications may stop working. Matter-over-Thread locks also require the appropriate controller and Thread border router for the functions you want.

Can a renter install a smart lock?

Often, a compatible retrofit lock is the least disruptive option because it can preserve the exterior cylinder and existing key. Ask the landlord first, confirm that the existing deadbolt is supported, and verify that the interior adapter fits and can be removed without damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the smart-lock battery dies?

Use the model's planned fallback: a physical key, keypad code, NFC credential, fingerprint, or external emergency power. Learn the procedure before installation. Level Lock Pro uses a CR2 battery, while Aqara U400 provides rechargeable USB-C and emergency charging; other models use different battery types and procedures.

Is Apple Home Key the same as Apple Home compatibility?

No. Apple Home Key is a specific tap-to-unlock capability for compatible iPhones and Apple Watches. A lock may integrate with Apple Home for app or automation control without supporting Home Key, so check the exact model and current device and operating-system requirements.

The Bottom Line

The right 2026 smart lock is the one that fits the door, has a backup entry method you will actually use, and matches your home ecosystem without requiring more hubs or maintenance than you want. Choose Level Lock Pro for a discreet Apple/Matter installation, Schlage Sense Pro for premium hands-free Apple entry, Aqara U400 for fingerprint and UWB flexibility, or an August retrofit lock for preserving the existing key. Before ordering, verify the exact model, door measurements, hub requirements, battery plan, regional availability, and independent physical-security evidence.
