Quick comparison
The best place to print your own wall art or wallpaper depends first on what you are making. For a repeating wallpaper pattern, Spoonflower is the clearest fit. For a custom-size mural, compare Spoonflower with Contrado. For a single photograph or fine-art image, WhiteWall is the premium, material-focused option; Mpix is the more approachable photo-wall-art choice; Printique offers a broad selection of rigid surfaces; and Nations Photo Lab is a practical mainstream option. Printful is the better fit when you are selling designs or need print-on-demand fulfillment rather than ordering one finished picture.

| Contrado | Custom-dimension murals and highly customized wallpaper | Upload a design, choose a photo/collage or repeat treatment, enter wall dimensions, preview the result, and select finishing options. | Its stated heat-printing process can produce up to 2.5% shrinkage, so the specified dimensions need an allowance. |
| WhiteWall | Premium photographs, fine-art prints, exact sizes, framing | Professional and fine-art papers, acrylic glass, aluminum Dibond, ChromaLuxe HD Metal, canvas, custom framing, and multi-panel wall art. | High-end positioning usually means a higher budget; maximum sizes vary by medium. |

These are fit-based recommendations from each provider’s documented products and ordering workflow, not independent rankings of color accuracy, durability, shipping performance, or print quality.

- Smooth Application: The smoothing tools help reduce bubbles and creases during installation for a smoother surface and easier application.
- Cutting Tool: Includes a utility knife and replacement blades for cutting and trimming materials during installation.

Start with the project, not the printer
There are two different buying decisions hidden in the phrase print your own wall art:
- A single image: a photograph, illustration, collage, or mural. Photo labs and wall-art specialists such as WhiteWall, Mpix, Printique, Nations Photo Lab, Contrado, and Printful are the natural starting points.
- A repeat pattern: a design intended to continue across a wall or several walls. Spoonflower and Contrado are better suited because their workflows address scale, repeats, tiling, and wall dimensions.
Next choose the surface. A framed paper print, canvas, aluminum, acrylic, and wallpaper do not produce the same visual or installation result even when they use the same image. Selecting the material first prevents a common mistake: choosing a provider because it has a convenient upload tool, then discovering that it does not offer the finish, mounting method, size, or installation behavior the room requires.
Best places to print custom wallpaper
Spoonflower: best overall fit for patterns and sample-first wallpaper buying
Spoonflower is the strongest match when you want to upload original artwork, browse an established design marketplace, or turn a small illustration into a repeating wallpaper pattern. Its documented workflow lets you adjust the design’s repeat and scale, use a wallpaper calculator, and order samples before committing to full rolls. It currently lists removable peel-and-stick wallpaper as well as traditional non-pasted products. Spoonflower’s ordering guide is particularly useful because it treats measurement and repeat behavior as part of the order rather than as an afterthought.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a construction or renovation project, measure every wall separately. Include doors and windows in the wall measurements, but exclude crown molding and baseboards according to Spoonflower’s guidance. If wall heights vary, its help documentation recommends ordering for the tallest wall. That approach leaves material available for trimming and avoids basing the order on a shorter section.
Spoonflower is a particularly sensible choice for a rental-friendly accent wall, a child’s room, a nursery, or a pattern that needs to repeat cleanly. The main risk is not the upload itself; it is ordering the wrong amount or misunderstanding how a half-drop or another repeat shifts from one strip to the next. Inspect the preview at full scale and order a sample whenever the pattern, color, texture, or opacity matters.
Contrado: best for custom-dimension murals
Contrado is worth comparing when the wall has an unusual size or you want a mural printed to specified dimensions. Its custom-wallpaper workflow supports uploading a design, selecting a photo or collage treatment or a repeat pattern, entering wall dimensions, previewing the design, and choosing finishing options. That makes it useful for a one-off mural where a standard roll configuration is less convenient.
There is an important specification to build into the estimate: Contrado warns that its heat-printing process can cause up to 2.5% shrinkage. Allow for that stated possibility when entering dimensions, and follow the provider’s current instructions rather than assuming the finished paper will equal the exact digital dimensions. Contrado also explains that low-quality image warnings may appear; reducing the design’s scale or using a tiled repeat can help, but neither option can create detail that was absent from the original file.

Best places to print photographs and other wall art
WhiteWall: premium materials, framing, and exact presentation
WhiteWall is the best fit for a photographer or buyer who is deciding between professional photo paper, fine-art paper, acrylic glass, aluminum Dibond, ChromaLuxe HD Metal, canvas, or custom framing. Its U.S. catalog also supports multi-panel wall art and custom formats. The exact maximum depends on the selected medium; WhiteWall’s photo-print FAQ lists an approximate maximum of 94.5 by 48 inches for some paper products, not as a universal limit for every product.
WhiteWall emphasizes gallery-quality production, professional materials, expert advice, sample packs, proof prints, secure packaging, and a five-year warranty on its U.S. landing page. Those are provider claims, so treat them as features or policies to verify rather than as independent test results. A proof print or sample pack is especially useful when you are choosing between a glossy, reflective surface and a fine-art or matte presentation.
Choose WhiteWall when the frame, substrate, size, or final presentation is central to the project and the budget allows a premium workflow. It is less compelling if the only goal is an inexpensive enlargement for a temporary room.
Mpix: the easiest route to approachable custom photo wall art
Mpix offers framed prints, canvas, metal, acrylic, wood, textile prints, photo tiles, and collages without requiring an especially specialized fine-art workflow. It is a good starting point for family photographs, vacation images, gifts, and ordinary residential wall decor.
For metal prints, Mpix lists glossy or matte finishes, white or metal bases, French-cleat or easel display options, sizes up to 40 by 60 inches, and typical lab processing of two to three business days. Mpix says orders are handmade in its Missouri and Kansas facilities. The two-to-three-day statement is lab processing, not a guaranteed arrival date; shipping destination, production selection, and the current order queue still matter. Review Mpix’s current metal-print options before deciding on the finish and mounting method.
Because Mpix displays starting prices and frequently runs promotions, do not use an old price as a project budget. Configure the exact size and finish, enter the shipping address, and confirm the live cart total and estimated delivery date.

Printique: broad material selection from one photo retailer
Printique is useful when you want to compare several rigid substrates in one storefront. Its wall-art range includes metal, acrylic, glass, wood, canvas, photo prints, and related formats. Its metal prints use images infused onto 1 mm ChromaLuxe aluminum, with glossy or matte white and silver finish options and several display methods. Printique states that metal print sizes range from 4 by 4 inches to 40 by 60 inches; the selected format and configuration control what is actually available.

That construction and the available mounting method affect the finished object’s weight, edge appearance, reflections, and required wall hardware. Compare the product specifications rather than assuming that acrylic, metal, or glass is inherently more durable or more attractive.
Printique is a good choice for a gallery wall where several materials need to be compared, or for customers already using Adorama’s photography ecosystem. The right selection depends on room lighting, viewing distance, desired glare, mounting location, and budget.
Nations Photo Lab: practical mainstream wall decor and mounting choices
Nations Photo Lab offers custom canvas, acrylic, metal, mounted, framed, and giclée wall decor. Its wall-decor collection tells customers to begin with a high-resolution image and then choose the surface. Product-specific details include white-coated aluminum metal prints and display options such as shadow mounts, easels, float mounts, and standoffs.
That range makes Nations a practical option for family portraits, wedding photographs, gallery walls, and buyers who want to compare conventional framed or mounted work with acrylic and metal. The company also commonly presents sale pricing and promotions. Because those offers are temporary, verify the current discount, size price, shipping charge, and estimated delivery date in the live cart.
Printful: best when the print is part of a business or fulfillment workflow
Printful is not primarily a consumer photo lab, but it fits artists, small businesses, event organizers, and online shops that need original designs produced and shipped without holding inventory. Its wall-art catalog includes canvas, framed canvas, paper posters, premium luster photo paper, framed prints, glossy metal, tapestries, flags, and related products. Printful says it handles production and shipping, supports worldwide delivery, and offers bulk-order savings for some products.
For one personal print, compare the complete price and delivery estimate with a dedicated photo lab. For a shop or repeated event order, the value is the fulfillment workflow, product catalog, and ability to send orders to customers—not necessarily the lowest price for a single item.

Which wall-art surface should you choose?
| Surface | Usually suits | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Photo or fine-art paper | Framed photographs, illustrations, and work where paper texture and a traditional presentation matter. | Usually needs a frame or mounting system. Glazing can add protection but also reflections. Paper type, finish, and frame depth change the appearance. |
| Canvas | Softened photographic presentation, casual interiors, and images that do not need a glossy contemporary surface. | Texture changes fine detail and color appearance. Check whether the product is gallery-wrapped, framed, or supplied with another mounting method. |
| Aluminum or metal | Contemporary photographs, saturated artwork, and situations where a rigid panel is preferred. | Glossy finishes can reflect windows and lights. White and silver or natural-metal bases can render the same image differently. Weight and mounting hardware matter. |
| Acrylic or optical acrylic | Modern, high-impact wall art and images intended to have a polished presentation. | Reflections, edge appearance, thickness, weight, and mounting method vary. Do not select it without checking the room’s direct light. |
| Wallpaper | Full-wall or accent-wall patterns, murals, children’s rooms, rentals, and designs that need to cover a surface rather than hang as a panel. | Wall preparation, adhesive or peel-and-stick behavior, seams, repeat alignment, trimming allowance, moisture, and future removal are all part of the decision. |
The best surface is therefore a room decision as much as a printer decision. A bright room with a large window may make a reflective finish difficult to view. A high-traffic wall may need a mounting approach that is more secure than a small decorative print. A rental may favor a removable wallpaper product, but the product’s current removal guidance and the condition of the underlying paint still need to be checked.
Prepare the image before uploading
Check pixel dimensions, not just the file’s name
Adobe identifies 300 pixels per inch as a standard target for high-quality prints, while noting that large-format work viewed from farther away can work at a lower effective resolution. The provider’s own preview or resolution warning should take precedence for the exact product.
Use this basic calculation: pixels divided by printed inches equals effective pixels per inch. For example, a 6,000-pixel-wide photograph printed 20 inches wide is 300 pixels per inch. Printed 60 inches wide, the same file is 100 pixels per inch. The second result may be acceptable for a mural viewed from across a room, but it is less forgiving if viewers will stand close to it. Do not upload a social-media download for a large, close-viewed print without checking the provider warning.
Dedicated print-preparation software is optional, but a tool that shows crop, dimensions, and effective resolution can prevent an expensive mistake. The important step is not the brand of editor; it is checking the actual file at the intended output size.
Confirm the crop and composition
Wall-art products use fixed aspect ratios. A wide landscape photograph may be cropped significantly when ordered as a square, while a portrait may lose important content in a panoramic format. Use the provider’s crop tool and inspect every edge. Keep faces, text, architectural details, and other non-negotiable elements away from the crop boundary.
Wallpaper adds another layer: decide whether the design is a single mural, a collage, a mirrored repeat, a half-drop repeat, or a tiled pattern. A preview that looks correct as a small thumbnail can produce an unwanted seam or a visible shift when enlarged across a wall.

Check color and request a proof when the decision is expensive
Different paper, canvas, metal, acrylic, and wallpaper surfaces change how an image appears. A proof or material sample is the safest way to see texture, contrast, color, opacity, and reflections before buying several rolls or a large framed piece. Spoonflower documents wallpaper samples, and WhiteWall offers sample-pack and proof-print options within its workflow. Other providers may offer product-specific samples or previews, so check the selected product rather than assuming every format can be sampled.

Measure wallpaper like a building material
- Measure each wall separately. Record width and height at more than one point because walls and floors are not always perfectly uniform.
- Include openings when following the provider’s calculator instructions. Spoonflower’s guidance says to measure walls including doors and windows, while excluding crown molding and baseboards. Do not casually subtract openings unless the current provider instructions tell you to do so.
- Use the tallest wall where heights differ. This helps maintain enough material for trimming and avoids ordering based on the shortest section.
- Account for the pattern repeat. The design may require more material than a plain, non-repeating image because each strip must align with the next.
- Add the provider’s stated allowance. Contrado warns of up to 2.5% shrinkage from its heat-printing process. Build that allowance into the order according to its current instructions.
- Keep roll or panel sequence intact. Do not assume that independently ordered pieces can be rearranged without affecting the repeat or color continuity.
Ask the installer or provider about seam placement before ordering a mural for a wall with outlets, corners, doors, windows, or built-in cabinetry. A small change in the starting point can determine whether an important part of the image lands in a convenient, visible location or disappears into a cutout.
Plan installation before the order arrives
For wallpaper
- Confirm whether the product is peel-and-stick or non-pasted, and follow that product’s adhesive and installation instructions.
- Prepare a clean, dry, smooth wall. Repair defects and allow coatings or repairs to cure as directed before hanging the paper.
- Use the manufacturer’s guidance for primer, paste compatibility, repositioning, removal, and overlap or butt seams.
- Dry-fit or lay out the panels in sequence before applying them. Check the repeat, orientation, and the location of doors, windows, outlets, and corners.
- A wallpaper smoothing tool kit with a smoothing blade or squeegee and seam roller can be useful for peel-and-stick or pasted work, but choose tools that match the paper and installation instructions.
- Gather wallpaper installation supplies such as the recommended primer or paste, a seam roller, a sharp trimming blade, a straightedge, and a suitable measuring tool. The exact kit depends on the product and whether the wall is painted, previously papered, textured, or repaired.
Do not treat a wallpaper sample as proof that every wall is installation-ready. A sample tells you about the printed surface and color; it does not replace checking adhesion, wall condition, moisture, seams, or the removal requirements for the full product.
For framed, mounted, and rigid wall art
- Check the finished dimensions and weight, not just the image size.
- Choose the hanger or anchor for the wall construction and the product’s mounting hardware. Drywall, masonry, wood framing, and paneling require different approaches.
- Use a French cleat, standoff, easel, float mount, or other system only when it is compatible with the product and location. Mpix, Printique, and Nations Photo Lab list different display methods for different products.
- For a multi-panel piece, mark the complete layout before drilling. Measure the gap between panels and account for the hanger position rather than assuming the visible image edge is the mounting center.
- Keep reflective acrylic, metal, or glass away from a sightline that will be dominated by a window or strong light unless that reflection is intentional.
A low-risk ordering process
- Define the finished location. Measure the wall or determine the frame, panel, or roll size that fits the space.
- Decide between a single image and a repeat. This usually narrows the provider list immediately.
- Select the surface. Compare paper, canvas, metal, acrylic, and wallpaper based on glare, texture, weight, mounting, and budget.
- Prepare a full-resolution file. Check effective resolution at the intended size, crop, orientation, and important details at every edge.
- Use the provider’s preview. Inspect repeat alignment, panel order, crop, bleed, and any low-resolution warning.
- Order a sample or proof. Prioritize this step for wallpaper, large orders, unusual materials, exact brand colors, and images with subtle shadows or skin tones.
- Review the live cart. Promotions, product prices, production queues, shipping charges, destination, and estimated delivery can change. Treat every displayed price and time as a current quote, not a permanent rate.
- Plan the install. Have the correct paste, primer, seam and trimming tools, anchors, or mounting hardware ready before the shipment arrives.
- Inspect immediately. Check the product against the order before cutting, trimming, hanging, or discarding packaging. Photograph any issue and follow the provider’s current claims or replacement procedure.

- Choose Mpix if…
- You want a straightforward U.S. photo wall-art order with many familiar formats and a documented metal-print workflow.
- Choose Printique if…
- You want to compare aluminum, acrylic, glass, wood, canvas, and other formats from one major photo retailer.
- Choose Nations Photo Lab if…
- You are ordering family or wedding wall decor and want framed, mounted, canvas, acrylic, and metal choices with potential promotions.
- Choose Printful if…

For a construction project, the provider is only one part of the result. Accurate measurements, an appropriate surface, a properly prepared wall, correct mounting, and a sample or proof when needed will usually matter more than choosing a service based on a temporary sale or a generic claim of superior quality.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best place to print custom wallpaper?
For repeating patterns, Spoonflower is the clearest fit because its workflow supports uploading artwork, changing scale and repeat, using a wallpaper calculator, and ordering samples. Contrado is a strong alternative for custom-dimension murals and supports photo, collage, and repeat-pattern treatments.
Where should I print a high-quality photo for my wall?
WhiteWall is the premium fit for fine-art papers, professional photo materials, framing, proof prints, sample packs, and custom formats. Mpix is a more approachable option for ordinary photo wall art, while Printique and Nations Photo Lab offer broad material selections.
How much resolution do I need for large wall art?
Use the provider’s preview and calculate effective resolution by dividing the file’s pixel dimensions by the intended printed dimensions. Adobe identifies 300 pixels per inch as a standard high-quality target, but large-format work viewed from farther away may work at a lower effective resolution. The printer’s own warning should take precedence.
How do I measure a wall for custom wallpaper?
Measure every wall separately and follow the provider’s current calculator instructions. Spoonflower recommends including doors and windows while excluding crown molding and baseboards, and recommends ordering for the tallest wall when heights vary. Contrado warns that its process can cause up to 2.5% shrinkage, so include the stated allowance in the order.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use Spoonflower for repeat-pattern wallpaper, Contrado for custom-size murals, WhiteWall for premium photographic presentation, Mpix for approachable photo wall art, Printique for material comparison, Nations Photo Lab for broad mainstream decor, and Printful for print-on-demand fulfillment. Before ordering, verify the live price and delivery estimate, check the file at its final size, order a sample or proof where possible, and treat measurements, seams, wall preparation, and mounting as part of the project.
