The best place to buy curtains depends on whether you need a wide range of sizes, an affordable in-store option, distinctive fabrics, or window hardware for a larger project. Wayfair and Target offer breadth and budget-oriented shopping; Pottery Barn and Anthropologie lean more curated or design-forward; Home Depot is useful when you are also sourcing project supplies. These are retailer-fit recommendations, not a ranked set of BHG hands-on test winners.
Which curtain retailer best fits your project?
| Retailer | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Wayfair | Shoppers who want a very broad online assortment and many price points. | Its scale can make comparison useful, but confirm panel dimensions, fabric, lining, and what is included in each listing. Bob Vila reported 14 million items and 11,000 global suppliers in 2021; those figures describe its overall marketplace at that time, not curtain inventory. |
| Target | Budget shoppers who value the option of visiting a physical store as well as using online filters. | Selection and local stock may vary. Bob Vila reported 1,844 stores and more than 1,700 curtain options in 2021; these are historical figures, not a current store or product count. |
| Pottery Barn | Shoppers seeking a curated range of fabrics and finishes. | Reviewed highlights flax linen, velvet twill, and sheer lace. Compare fabric and lining against your light-control needs before choosing a style. |
| Anthropologie | Design-led rooms where distinctive colors, patterns, or statement styles matter. | Its appeal is a more expressive look; check that the selected panel’s size, opacity, and care needs suit the room. |
| Home Depot | Projects that require rods, mounting hardware, or other renovation supplies alongside curtains. | Convenience for coordinating project materials is useful, but assess the panel itself for the desired fabric, dimensions, and light control. |
| Walmart and IKEA | Budget-oriented alternatives. | Inventory, sizing, and quality vary by product, so compare the individual panel specifications rather than assuming consistency across the retailer. |
These recommendations reflect retailer characteristics described in comparative coverage from Bob Vila, Reviewed, and ELLE Decor. Bob Vila says its comparison considered retailer reputation, quality and customer service, style and light-control needs, and a range of price points. The available evidence does not establish current prices, stock, return terms, or retailer-wide quality rankings.
How to choose curtains that work in the room
Match opacity to the job
Sheer panels soften daylight while preserving a bright feel. Light-filtering panels reduce glare without making a room fully dark. For a bedroom or another space where reducing incoming light and increasing privacy are priorities, compare blackout curtain panels. Blackout products can differ in construction and coverage, so read the product description rather than relying on the category label alone.
Check panel dimensions and quantity
Measure the window and decide how much coverage and fullness you want before ordering. Listings may describe one panel or a pair; confirm the package quantity and panel width so you can calculate the total fabric across the window. Check the available lengths as well as widths, especially if the curtain must clear a sill, reach the floor, or sit above the window frame.

Compare fabric, lining, and care
Fabric affects appearance, drape, and maintenance. The retailer range includes options such as linen, velvet, and sheer lace, but a fabric name by itself does not tell you how much light a finished panel blocks. Look for explicit lining and opacity details, and review care instructions before buying.
Calculate the complete cost
Compare the cost for the full number of panels needed, not just the price of a single panel. Add any rod, rings, brackets, or mounting hardware that are not included. Current prices and package contents vary by listing and were not established in the cited comparative coverage.

Plan for rods and installation hardware
Before purchasing panels, confirm how they attach: common listing details may specify a rod pocket, tabs, grommets, or rings. Match that header style to the rod and hardware you have or plan to buy, and check that the rod can support the curtain’s weight. For a project that also needs rods or renovation supplies, Home Depot may be a convenient retailer to consider; wherever you shop, verify what the panel package includes.
