For bigleaf hydrangeas, start with a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade, with moist, well-drained soil. Avoid hot, dry, exposed locations. Other hydrangea types can handle different amounts of sun, so identify the plant before choosing its permanent home.
Choose the location for the type of hydrangea
Hydrangeas do not all have the same light requirements. Use the plant’s species or cultivar to guide your choice rather than assuming one exposure suits every hydrangea.
| Type | Suitable light | Soil and care notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bigleaf (Hydrangea macrophylla) | Morning sun and afternoon shade are a practical starting point. | Prefers moist, well-drained soil; avoid hot, dry, exposed sites. UGA Cooperative Extension. |
| Panicle (Hydrangea paniculata) | Full sun to partial shade. | Moist, well-drained soil. Illinois Extension. |
| Smooth (Hydrangea arborescens) | Partial to full shade is best; can tolerate full sun if watered regularly. | Moist, well-drained soil. Illinois Extension. |
| Oakleaf (Hydrangea quercifolia) | Full sun to shade. | Moist, well-drained soil. Illinois Extension. |
Look for moisture without waterlogging
Hydrangea guidance commonly calls for moist, well-drained soil. Moisture matters, but standing water or poorly drained ground is not the same thing. Before planting, check whether the spot drains after rain; avoid a location that stays soggy.
Account for afternoon heat and watering
For bigleaf hydrangeas, UGA Cooperative Extension specifically advises against hot, dry, exposed sites. If you are considering a sunnier spot for a shade-preferring type, make sure regular watering is realistic: Illinois Extension notes that smooth hydrangea can tolerate full sun if watered regularly. Sun tolerance therefore depends on the species and the water available at that site.

- Plan a future flowering border with this 35-count hydrangea seed selection. Start small plants first, then arrange the developing shrubs in a suitable garden space.
- A longer growing project: Raising hydrangeas from seed takes patience. Allow for establishment before expecting the mature flower display associated with a garden shrub.
- Make room beyond the seed tray. Choose the final planting position for the species and mature size, with enough space between plants as the border develops.
- Care begins with the seedlings. Use an appropriate growing medium, maintain suitable moisture, and protect young growth from harsh conditions while it establishes.
- Let the planting develop naturally. Seed-grown shrubs may vary in flower shade and other characteristics; the packet does not promise a fixed three-color result.
Consider soil pH only when bloom color matters
For bigleaf hydrangeas, soil pH can influence flower color rather than determine the basic location. Illinois Extension says blue blooms are usually produced in acidic soil around pH 5.0–5.5. If blue flowers are your goal, use that range as a color consideration; it does not replace choosing suitable light and drainage.
Check the garden before planting
- Identify the hydrangea species or cultivar from its label.
- Observe how much direct sun the intended spot receives, especially in the morning and afternoon.
- Check whether the soil stays moist while draining well after rain.
- Consider whether the spot becomes hot, dry, or exposed, and whether you can water regularly if the plant needs it.
Local conditions and cultivar can affect how a hydrangea performs. If the plant identity or your site’s suitability is uncertain, ask your local Cooperative Extension for region-specific guidance.
