For most shoppers who want a conventional electric heated mattress pad, the Sharper Image Dual Zone Heated Mattress Pad is the strongest all-around choice in the reviewed group. It combines independent controls, 10 heat levels per side, machine washability, and a 10-hour automatic shutoff. Couples who want more fine-grained adjustment should consider the Sunbeam Restful Quilted Heated Mattress Pad, while the Biddeford is the more budget-conscious option. If spill protection matters, the Serta waterproof heated mattress pad is the standout.

These recommendations are based on testing and reporting from Sleep Foundation, Mattress Clarity, Mattress Nerd, and Good Housekeeping—not independent hands-on testing by this site. Product names, prices, stock, warranties, and specifications can change, so confirm the exact model and current manual before buying.

The best heated mattress pads, explained

Best overall: Sharper Image Dual Zone Heated Mattress Pad

The Sharper Image Dual Zone Heated Mattress Pad is the best fit for shoppers who want a traditional electric pad with useful couple-friendly controls. Sleep Foundation lists it as its best overall heated mattress pad. Each side has its own controller and 10 temperature levels, so one sleeper can choose a different setting from the other.

The pad uses a skirt-style fitted-sheet design and a 100% polyester cover. It is reported to be machine washable and dryable, and it has a 10-hour automatic shutoff. The listed sizes are full, queen, and king. Sleep Foundation reported a price of $94 at the time of its review; that figure is a historical snapshot, not a current price.

Choose this dual-zone heated mattress pad if you want straightforward electric warmth without the equipment or expense of an active heating-and-cooling system. Before ordering, check whether the current listing uses the same controller, cover, pocket construction, and size range described by the review.

Best for couples who want more adjustment: Sunbeam Restful Quilted Heated Mattress Pad

The Sunbeam Restful Quilted model is a compelling choice when two sleepers want independent controls and a wider selection of heat levels. Mattress Clarity gave the reviewed model a 4.3/5 score and selected Sunbeam as its best dual-control pick. The pad has two controllers and 12 heat settings; the review described the lowest setting as subtle and the highest as very warm.

Sunbeam’s instruction manual adds important operating detail. The controller uses levels 1 through 12, and its automatic shutoff is factory-set to eight hours but can be adjusted for as long as 12 hours. The two controls operate independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The manual also provides stricter guidance than a retailer’s short product description usually does. Do not use the pad folded or bunched, with another electrically heated product, on a waterbed, bunk bed, mechanically adjustable bed, or children’s bed. Disconnect the product from the wall before detaching a controller, and inspect the pad, cords, and controllers for wear before each use.

The reviewed pad is described as cotton and came with a five-year limited warranty in Mattress Clarity’s report. Because warranties and model numbers can vary, confirm those details for the exact Sunbeam heated mattress pad you are considering.

Best budget option: Biddeford Heated Mattress Pad

Biddeford is the budget-oriented recommendation from Mattress Clarity and is described as an Amazon pick. The reviewed pad includes dual controllers and split heat settings, making it more useful for couples than a single-control design. Mattress Clarity also noted two controller connection points, which may help reduce cable tangling around the bed.

Its heat range was described as milder than Sunbeam’s. That is an advantage for someone who wants gentle preheating rather than an intensely warm sleep surface, but it may disappoint shoppers who want the highest possible heat. Treat “budget” as a description of the reviewed product’s positioning, not a promise of the lowest current price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Biddeford heated mattress pad makes sense when you want dual-zone adjustment at a lower expected cost and do not need an especially aggressive heat range. Confirm the current size, controller layout, and automatic-shutoff period before purchase.

Best for spill protection: Serta Waterproof Heated Mattress Pad

The Serta Waterproof Heated Mattress Pad is the most practical choice in this group when protecting the mattress from spills is a priority. Mattress Clarity describes it as waterproof, machine washable, equipped with two controllers and 10 heat settings, and fitted with an automatic shutoff.

Good Housekeeping named the Serta model in its 2026 Bedding Awards. Its testers reported quick, even heating, a plush down-alternative top over the heating wires, independent controllers, and a waterproof layer. They also reported that the wires were not noticeable while lying on the pad.

Good Housekeeping cited an Amazon price of $140 when it published its award coverage. Do not treat that as today’s price. A waterproof layer can help with ordinary spills, but it does not make the pad suitable for immersion or use while wet. Follow the current care and electrical-safety instructions, and remove all controllers before washing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are specifically shopping for a waterproof heated mattress pad, the Serta is the clearest match among these recommendations. Check the product label to ensure the waterproof version—not a visually similar non-waterproof model—is in your cart.

Best for a king-size bed with a tall mattress: Beautyrest Heated Mattress Pad

Mattress Clarity identifies Beautyrest as its best king-size heated mattress pad. The reviewed model has deep corner pockets reported to accommodate mattresses up to 19 inches tall, which is an important distinction for thick mattresses and layered beds.

It also uses flexible wires and a down-cotton-blend material, is machine washable, and has a reported 10-hour automatic shutoff. Measure the mattress from the bottom edge to the top sleeping surface before ordering. A nominal king-size measurement is not enough if the fitted skirt cannot reach around the mattress.

The Beautyrest heated mattress pad is the most logical choice here for a tall king-size mattress, provided the current model retains the reported 19-inch pocket capacity. Confirm pocket depth and dimensions against the current package or manufacturer listing.

Premium alternatives that heat and cool

Conventional heated mattress pads use electrical heating wires beneath the cover. They are generally simpler and less expensive than active temperature-control systems. They also tend to focus on heating rather than cooling.

Premium systems work differently. Some circulate temperature-controlled water through tubing, while BedJet delivers actively heated or cooled air. These products require an external unit, involve more setup, and cost substantially more, but they are worth considering if cooling is as important as warmth or if two sleepers need more precise climate control.

Best luxury system: Eight Sleep Pod 3 Cover

Sleep Foundation lists the Eight Sleep Pod 3 Cover as its best luxury option. It uses water tubes to provide both heating and cooling, offers a broad range of temperature settings, and includes integrated sensors that track nighttime movement for sleep reports.

It is not a like-for-like replacement for a $100-or-less wired pad. Sleep Foundation listed a price of $2,195, which should be treated as a time-specific reference rather than a current quote. The system’s higher price, external equipment, and added complexity make it most appropriate for shoppers who specifically want active heating and cooling and are comfortable with a premium sleep-tech setup.

Best active climate system for couples: BedJet 3

The BedJet 3 Dual Zone Climate Comfort Sleep System is Sleep Foundation’s couples pick among active temperature-control products. It uses heated or cooled air and is reported to adjust the sleep surface between 66 and 104 degrees. Its dual-zone design is aimed at couples who want separate climate settings rather than one shared temperature.

Sleep Foundation reports a 60-night sleep trial, free standard ground shipping in the U.S. and Canada, and a two-year standard warranty, with an optional extended warranty. These terms are subject to change and should be confirmed for the current purchase location.

BedJet is a better match than a conventional heated pad if one or both sleepers want cooling as well as warmth. It is also a more involved and expensive solution, so it is difficult to justify if the only goal is warming the bed before sleep.

Another active-temperature alternative: ChiliSleep Cube

Mattress Nerd lists the ChiliSleep Cube Mattress Pad as its top pick and reports a 4.2/5 score. The Cube is presented alongside conventional Sunbeam and Electrowarmth pads as a premium active-temperature alternative, not as an inexpensive wire-heated mattress pad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because product names and generations can change, verify the current Cube model, included equipment, temperature features, price, and availability before treating it as a direct comparison with the conventional pads above.

How heated mattress pads work

Conventional electric pads

Ordinary heated mattress pads place insulated electrical heating wires inside a fitted or skirt-style pad. A controller sends power to the wires at the selected level. Dual-zone versions divide the pad into left and right sections so each sleeper can choose independently.

These pads are usually the simplest option: place the pad on the mattress, secure the fitted skirt or corners, connect the controllers, and set the heat. Their main limitations are that the warmth comes from wires, cooling is generally unavailable, and compatibility depends on the mattress and bed frame.

Water-based temperature systems

Systems such as the Eight Sleep Pod 3 Cover use tubing and an external temperature-control unit rather than relying only on electrical heating wires in the cover. This design can provide both heating and cooling, but it adds equipment, setup, cost, and additional operating considerations.

Air-based systems

BedJet uses actively heated or cooled air. Its dual-zone approach makes it particularly relevant to couples who want separate temperatures and to sleepers who want both warming and cooling. It is a climate-control system rather than a standard electric mattress pad.

What to compare before buying

1. Control layout

For couples, independent controls are often more valuable than a higher number of heat levels. A single controller can force both sleepers to compromise, while dual controls let each side be adjusted separately. Check whether the product has two physical controllers and two independent connection points, not merely two buttons on one remote.

2. Heat range and increments

The reviewed Sunbeam model has 12 levels. Sharper Image and Serta are reported with 10 settings. More levels do not automatically mean stronger or better heating; they may simply provide smaller adjustment steps. Look at the actual described heat range as well as the number of settings.

3. Automatic shutoff

Automatic shutoff periods vary. The Sunbeam controller is factory-set to eight hours and adjustable up to 12 hours. Sharper Image, Beautyrest, and Serta are reported with 10-hour shutoffs. A Sleep Number DualTemp listing found on Amazon was reported with a nine-hour shutoff.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Auto-off is a useful safety feature, but it does not replace proper use. Do not leave a pad folded, bunched, damaged, or wet simply because it has a timer.

4. Mattress dimensions and pocket depth

Check the mattress dimensions, thickness, and attachment style. A skirt-style or fitted-sheet design may fit differently from a shallow elastic corner design. Beautyrest’s reported 19-inch capacity illustrates why pocket depth matters, especially on a king-size mattress or a bed with a thick comfort layer.

5. Materials and comfort

Cover materials vary. The reviewed Sharper Image uses 100% polyester; the Sunbeam is described as cotton; Beautyrest uses a down-cotton blend; and the Serta has a plush down-alternative top over the wires. If you are sensitive to texture or concerned about feeling wires, prioritize the construction and tester observations for the exact model rather than assuming every heated pad feels the same.

6. Washability

Several reviewed models are machine washable, but the controller and cords must be removed first. Confirm whether the pad may also be tumble-dried and which temperature is permitted. Sunbeam’s manual specifically warns against commercial laundromat dryers because excessive heat can damage the wiring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Water resistance

A waterproof layer can be valuable in homes where spills are a realistic concern. Serta is the clearest waterproof recommendation in this group. Water resistance should not be confused with permission to use the pad while wet, wash it with the controls attached, or expose electrical connections to water.

8. Bed and frame compatibility

Compatibility is a safety issue, not just a fit issue. Sleep Foundation cautions against using heated mattress pads on waterbeds and pull-out beds and says adjustable-bed use can damage heating wires. Sunbeam’s manual separately warns against waterbeds, bunk beds, mechanically adjustable beds, and children’s beds. The current manufacturer’s instructions take precedence over a retailer’s generic compatibility statement.

Heated mattress pad safety checklist

Heated mattress pads are generally safe when used exactly as directed by the manufacturer. Before buying, look for independent electrical-safety certification such as UL certification, automatic shutoff, and overheating protection where available. Do not assume that a feature on one model applies to every model.

  • Read the current manual for the exact model before first use.
  • Inspect the pad, controller, plugs, and cords for wear before each use.
  • Do not use the pad if it is wet.
  • Never operate it folded, tightly rolled, bunched, or compressed under another item.
  • Do not use it with another electrically heated product unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that combination.
  • Do not use an extension cord, generator, power converter, or inverter with the Sunbeam model covered by its manual.
  • Keep the controller and electrical connections dry.
  • Do not use a heated pad on a waterbed, bunk bed, pull-out bed, mechanically adjustable bed, or children’s bed when the instructions prohibit it.
  • Unplug the product before detaching the controller for washing or storage.

People with reduced heat sensitivity, poor circulation, diabetes, or certain medical devices should follow the product manual’s warnings and ask a healthcare professional whether use is appropriate. Warmth may feel comforting, but a heated mattress pad should not be presented as a treatment for pain or a medical condition.

How to wash and store a heated mattress pad

  1. Unplug it from the wall. Do not begin by pulling on the controller cable while the product remains connected.
  2. Detach the controllers and cords. Sunbeam’s manual specifically instructs users to disconnect from the wall before detaching the controller.
  3. Inspect the pad. Look for frayed wiring, damaged connectors, scorching, exposed components, or other wear. Do not wash and reuse a damaged pad.
  4. Follow the exact care label. “Machine washable” does not mean every model can use the same cycle, detergent, dryer setting, or drying time.
  5. Use a household dryer only when permitted. Sunbeam warns against commercial laundromat dryers because excessive heat may damage the wiring.
  6. Let the pad dry completely. Do not reconnect or operate it while damp.
  7. Store it loosely. Avoid sharp folds, tight compression, and anything that could crease or damage the internal wires.

Which type should you buy?

Your priority Most suitable category Trade-off
Warm the bed simply and affordably Conventional electric mattress pad Usually heating only; fit and wire placement matter.
Different temperatures on each side Dual-zone electric pad More controllers and cords, but better independence for couples.
Spill protection Waterproof electric pad Waterproof construction does not permit wet operation or immersion.
Heating and cooling Water- or air-based active system Much higher cost, external equipment, and more setup.
Temperature data and premium features Luxury active system such as Eight Sleep Substantially more expensive than a conventional heated pad.

How the testing behind these recommendations was conducted

Sleep Foundation reports that its heated mattress-pad testing takes place in a Seattle test lab. Its evaluators examine comfort, mattress protection, temperature-setting range, ease of adjustment, construction, materials, size options, and controls. Testers lie on the pads at different heat settings and in different sleep positions, then conduct several weeks of at-home field testing. Customer surveys and third-party reviews supplement the hands-on work.

Mattress Clarity says it personally tests the vast majority of the products it reviews. For the pads in this comparison, it assessed construction, quality, ease of use, heat intensity, controller layout, fit, pocket depth, washability, and perceived comfort.

Those are reported methods and observations from the named publications. This article does not claim that its writer independently tested the products. Product specifications come from the cited reviews or, for Sunbeam’s operating and safety details, the manufacturer’s instruction manual.

Price, warranty, and availability notes

Prices in this category move frequently with size, sales, retailer, and product generation. The reported reference points include $94 for the Sharper Image pad in Sleep Foundation’s review, $140 for the Serta pad in Good Housekeeping’s award coverage, and $2,195 for the Eight Sleep Pod 3 Cover in Sleep Foundation’s listing. None should be treated as a guaranteed current price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warranty and trial terms also need a live check. Mattress Clarity reported a five-year limited warranty for the reviewed Sunbeam model. Sleep Foundation reported a 60-night trial, free standard ground shipping in the U.S. and Canada, and a two-year standard warranty for BedJet 3, with an optional extended warranty. Retailer, size, geography, and model-version terms can differ.

At publication, verify the current product page, exact size, seller, stock status, return policy, warranty, pocket depth, care instructions, and safety certification. The model shown in a search result may not be identical to the model evaluated in an older roundup.

Research basis

The comparison draws on product testing and reporting from Sleep Foundation, Mattress Clarity, Mattress Nerd, and Good Housekeeping, plus Sunbeam’s official instruction manual for controller operation and safety guidance. Retail links, prices, product generations, warranties, and availability should be rechecked before publication or purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are heated mattress pads safe to use all night?

They are generally safe only when used according to the current manufacturer’s instructions. Automatic shutoff is helpful, but do not use a pad folded, bunched, wet, damaged, or on a prohibited bed type. Check the exact model’s shutoff and safety instructions rather than assuming every pad has the same protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you use a heated mattress pad on an adjustable bed?

Do not assume compatibility. Sleep Foundation warns that adjustable-bed movement can damage heating wires, and Sunbeam’s manual warns against mechanically adjustable beds. Use an adjustable-bed model only when the current manufacturer specifically approves that combination.

What is the difference between a heated mattress pad and BedJet?

A conventional heated mattress pad uses electrical heating wires inside the pad. BedJet uses actively heated or cooled air and can provide both warming and cooling. BedJet is more expensive and requires external equipment, but its dual-zone design is useful for couples who want separate temperatures.

Can a heated mattress pad be washed in a washing machine?

Many reviewed pads are machine washable, but the controllers and cords must be removed first. Follow the exact care label, use only the permitted dryer setting, and never use a commercial laundromat dryer if the manual prohibits it. Do not reconnect or use the pad until it is completely dry.

Which heated mattress pad is best for couples?

For conventional electric warmth, the Sharper Image Dual Zone and Sunbeam Restful Quilted models are the strongest couple-oriented choices because they have independent controls. For couples who want both heating and cooling, BedJet 3 is the more specialized but much more expensive option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose the Sharper Image Dual Zone Heated Mattress Pad for the best balance of independent controls, adjustable warmth, washability, and automatic shutoff among the reviewed conventional pads. Choose Sunbeam for 12 heat levels, Biddeford for gentler budget-friendly warmth, Serta for a waterproof layer, and Beautyrest when a tall king-size mattress needs deeper pockets. If cooling is equally important, skip ordinary wire pads and compare an active system such as BedJet 3 or Eight Sleep Pod 3, accepting their greater cost and complexity.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
