The Best Google Nest Products for 2024: Which Devices Were Worth Buying?

The best Google Nest product for 2024 depended on the job. Compare the top Nest displays, speakers, cameras, doorbells, thermostats, mesh Wi-Fi and safety devices, including subscriptions, app compatibility and longevity warnings.

The best Google Nest product for 2024 depended on what you needed it to do. For an all-purpose smart-home screen, the Nest Hub Max was the strongest choice. The Nest Hub (2nd gen) made more sense beside a bed, the Nest Audio was the best screen-free speaker, and the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) was the better option for homes with compatible doorbell wiring.

This is a historical 2024 buying guide—not a list of products currently sold in 2026. Google’s lineup, prices, subscriptions and support position have changed, so current store listings should not be treated as evidence of 2024 availability or pricing.

Quick answers

Category Best 2024 pick Best suited to Main drawback
Best overall Google Nest Hub Max Kitchens, family rooms and central smart-home control Camera privacy and aging support position
Affordable smart display Nest Hub (2nd gen) Bedrooms, bedside tables and smaller spaces No camera and weaker audio
Best speaker Nest Audio Music and podcasts without a screen No display or camera feeds
Low-cost speaker Nest Mini (2nd gen) Timers, routines and room-by-room voice control Limited volume and bass
Wired doorbell Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) Homes with suitable existing wiring Requires wiring and transformer checks
Flexible security camera Nest Cam (battery) Indoor or outdoor locations without nearby power Charging and limited suitability for continuous recording
Advanced thermostat Nest Learning Thermostat Homeowners wanting automatic scheduling HVAC compatibility must be confirmed
Mesh Wi-Fi Nest Wifi Pro New Google-centered smart-home networks Not automatically worth upgrading to
Safety device Nest Protect Smoke and carbon-monoxide alerts Finite service life and uncertain long-term availability

Google’s support documentation lists the main Nest device families, while Google’s device catalog provides broader ecosystem context.

Best overall: Google Nest Hub Max

The Nest Hub Max was the broadest recommendation for 2024. It combined a 10-inch HD display, stereo speakers with a 3-inch woofer, Google Photos, recipes, calendars, reminders, YouTube, Netflix, YouTube TV, smart-home controls, Google Meet calling and a built-in Nest Cam.

#1 Best Overall
Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 3rd Gen) - 2K Video, Live View - 2025 - Hazel
  • Meet the wired Nest Doorbell; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what’s at your door and and what to do next (Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
  • No need to recharge or replace batteries; the Nest Doorbell keeps you plugged into home, day and night
  • The Nest Doorbell keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification,
and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a
green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
  • With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Person with flowers”[3]; get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
  • Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, the Nest Doorbell’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, see in the dark with night vision, and see the bigger picture with an expanded 166° field of view[1]

That combination made it particularly useful in a kitchen or family room. It could act as a shared household dashboard, music player, recipe screen, photo display and voice-controlled hub rather than serving only one purpose.

The Hub Max was not the right choice for every room. Its camera may be inappropriate in a bedroom or another privacy-sensitive space, and its built-in camera is not a substitute for a dedicated outdoor security camera. Some camera and recording features may also depend on the applicable Nest Aware or Google Home subscription available at the time.

Longevity also deserved attention. Google’s security documentation listed September 9, 2024 as the Nest Hub Max’s security-validation end date. That does not necessarily mean the device immediately stopped working, but it made “future-proof” an unjustified description. Buyers should treat it as a capable but aging product.

Buy it if: you want one device for household control, photos, calls and better-than-average smart-display audio.

Choose something else if: you need a camera-free bedroom device or a dedicated security camera.

See Google’s Nest Hub Max product page for the hardware and feature description.

Best affordable smart display: Nest Hub (2nd gen)

The Nest Hub (2nd gen) was the better choice for bedside tables, bedrooms, smaller kitchens and buyers who did not want a camera. Its 7-inch screen handled timers, alarms, recipes, music, reminders, smart-home controls and compatible camera or doorbell feeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its defining advantage was not merely its smaller size. The lack of a built-in camera made it more comfortable in a private room, while its sleep-sensing feature gave it a bedroom-oriented role that the Hub Max did not match in the same way.

Sleep Sensing should be treated as a wellness feature, not a medical diagnostic system. Availability and subscription requirements could also vary by market and feature.

Compared with the Hub Max, the second-generation Hub had a smaller display, weaker audio and no video-calling camera. It was therefore the better value for personal bedside control, but not for group entertainment or camera-based calls.

Google’s Nest Hub comparison page describes the different positioning of the Hub and Hub Max.

Google Nest WiFi Pro - 6E - Reliable Home Wi-Fi System with Fast Speed and Whole Home Coverage - Mesh Router - 3 Pack - Snow
  • Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
  • Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
  • Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
  • Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
  • It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]

Best Google Nest speakers

Nest Audio: best for music

The Nest Audio was the strongest conventional Nest speaker in 2024. It offered better sound and bass than the Nest Mini and worked well for music, podcasts, Google Assistant commands and multiroom speaker groups.

It made sense for a living room, kitchen or office where a screen was unnecessary. Its value still depended on the music services supported by the user’s account and on how reliably Google Assistant understood commands in that environment.

Choose Nest Audio if: sound quality matters more than visual controls.

Choose the Hub Max instead if: you also want recipes, video, photos, calls or camera feeds.

Nest Mini (2nd gen): best low-cost room speaker

The Nest Mini (2nd gen) was the inexpensive way to add Google Assistant to several rooms. It handled timers, alarms, routines, podcasts and basic smart-home control, included a physical microphone switch and could join speaker groups.

Its small size came with limited bass and volume. It was ideal for room-by-room coverage, but not the best primary speaker for serious music listening.

Best Nest doorbell: wired or battery?

The choice between the two 2024 Nest Doorbell designs was primarily a decision about power, installation and recording behavior—not simply appearance.

Situation Better choice Why
Existing compatible doorbell wiring Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) Continuous power and better suitability for a busy entrance
No usable wiring or rental property Nest Doorbell (battery) Flexible installation and optional wired connection
Need continuous 24/7 video history Wired camera or doorbell solution The battery Doorbell does not provide continuous 24/7 video history
Frequent visitors or heavy motion activity Wired model Avoids regular battery charging

Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen)

The Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) was the better pick for a home with suitable wiring. It offered live view, visitor alerts, two-way communication and viewing on compatible Google displays without relying on a rechargeable battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its 960p video resolution was functional but not class-leading. Before buying, check the existing wiring and transformer conditions; professional installation may be necessary. Recorded history and advanced recognition features could require a subscription.

Google’s 2024 coverage also noted the redesigned appearance, HDR video and 960p resolution. See the contemporary Android Authority roundup for comparative context.

Nest Doorbell (battery)

The Nest Doorbell (battery) was the practical choice for renters, retrofit installations and homes without usable doorbell wiring. It could be installed wirelessly or connected to wiring later.

Google Nest Thermostat - Smart Thermostat for Home - Programmable Wifi Thermostat - Snow
  • ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat for home that helps you save energy and stay comfortable.Product note: You can also check your system’s compatibility before purchasing a Nest thermostat with our online Nest Compatibility Checker on the Google Nest support page.Connectivity Protocol : ‎Wi-Fi.Connectivity Protocol : ‎Wi-Fi
  • The Nest Thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, you’ll need a C wire or other compatible power accessory. Lock feature: No
  • Nest Thermostat turns itself down when you leave, so you don’t waste energy heating or cooling an empty home; easily program an energy efficient schedule in the Google home app on your Android or iPhone
  • Remote control lets family members change the thermostat temperature from anywhere on a phone, laptop, or tablet[1]
  • Savings Finder looks for more ways your thermostat can help you save, and suggests tweaks to your schedule in the app; check with your energy provider to learn more about rebates and more ways to save on a Nest thermostat

Google’s technical specifications list a 1.3-megapixel sensor, a 145-degree diagonal field of view, HDR and 960 × 1280 video. The battery model does not support continuous 24/7 video history. Battery life varies with activity, temperature, Wi-Fi conditions and camera settings, so a single universal battery-life figure would be misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The model requires the Google Home app and is not compatible with the legacy Nest app or home.nest.com, according to Google’s technical specifications.

Buy the battery model if: flexible installation matters most.

Do not buy it if: you expect always-on recording or the doorbell is installed where charging is difficult.

Best flexible security camera: Nest Cam (battery)

The Nest Cam (battery) was the most flexible Nest camera for 2024 because it could be used indoors or outdoors and installed where running power was difficult. It supported live view, two-way talk and alerts that could distinguish people, animals and vehicles, subject to the device, software, subscription and regional availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It was a good fit for a side entrance, detached area, rental property or indoor location without a convenient outlet. The trade-off was maintenance: the camera had to be removed and charged, and cold weather, weak Wi-Fi, frequent motion and difficult mounting locations could reduce convenience.

Where reliable power was available, a wired camera was generally the better fit for continuous operation. Battery cameras should not be selected for a location where uninterrupted recording is the main requirement.

Longer event history, familiar-face detection and other advanced functions could require the applicable Nest Aware or Google Home subscription. The official Nest Cam page describes its indoor/outdoor positioning.

Best Nest thermostat

Nest Learning Thermostat: best for advanced automation

The Nest Learning Thermostat was the better choice for homeowners who wanted automatic schedule creation, more advanced energy features and support for compatible temperature sensors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google announced a redesigned Nest Learning Thermostat on August 6, 2024, so the exact model available depended on when in 2024 the purchase occurred. Do not silently apply specifications from a later model to an earlier 2024 recommendation. Google’s August 2024 announcement gives the relevant date.

Compatibility must come before purchase. Heat pumps, multi-zone systems, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, heating-only systems and systems without a C wire may require additional checking, a power connector or professional installation. Utility rebates may reduce the effective cost, but savings claims are estimates rather than guarantees; climate, insulation, HVAC equipment, schedule and user behavior all matter.

Nest Thermostat: best lower-cost option

The cheaper Nest Thermostat was better for buyers who wanted app control and scheduled energy management without paying for the Learning model. It did not automatically learn routines in the same way and was not compatible with the Nest Temperature Sensor according to Google’s comparison.

Its lower price did not remove installation concerns. Google stated that some systems require a Nest Power Connector or C wire, and compatibility should be checked using the exact HVAC configuration before ordering. If compatibility is uncertain, an HVAC professional or a thermostat designed for that system may be safer than guessing.

Use Google’s thermostat comparison and compatibility information as a starting point, not as a substitute for checking your own system.

Best Nest mesh router: Nest Wifi Pro

The Nest Wifi Pro was Google’s most forward-looking Nest networking product in 2024. It used Wi-Fi 6E and included Matter-controller and Thread-border-router capabilities, making it a logical foundation for a new Google-centered smart home.

It was not an automatic upgrade for every Google Wifi or older Nest Wifi owner. Wi-Fi 6E benefits require compatible client devices, and existing systems may not combine with Nest Wifi Pro in the way a buyer expects. Home size, wall construction, internet speed, Ethernet availability and wired-backhaul plans matter more than the label on the box.

A faster router does not increase the speed of an internet plan by itself. Mesh points placed too far apart or behind dense obstructions can also perform poorly. If an existing system already provides reliable coverage, upgrading may solve no meaningful problem.

Best safety-focused product: Nest Protect

Nest Protect remained the specialist choice for households wanting interconnected smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, voice alerts identifying the type and location of a problem, and smartphone notifications.

It should be treated as a safety device first and a smart-home accessory second. Follow local building and fire codes, keep required alarms in the correct locations, and replace each unit according to the date and instructions printed on it. App connectivity must never be treated as a replacement for the local alarm.

Nest Protect’s age, finite service life and less certain availability made it less straightforward than Google’s newer cameras and thermostats. If replacement units or support are difficult to obtain, a currently supported, code-compliant alarm from another manufacturer may be the more practical choice.

Subscriptions, apps and privacy

Subscriptions affect the real cost

Camera and doorbell recommendations are incomplete without discussing recorded history. Depending on the model, period and region, a subscription could be needed for longer event history, familiar-face detection, advanced recognition and related features. A device that appears affordable at purchase may cost substantially more over several years once recording services, installation and accessories are included.

Best Value
Google Nest Cam Indoor (Wired, 3rd Gen) - Security Camera - 2025 - Snow
  • Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Indoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
  • With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Kids are playing soccer in the living room”[3]; and get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
  • Google Nest Cam Indoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification,
and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a
green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
  • Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; and with a wider, taller field of view, you can see even more of a long hallway or large room[1]
  • Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)

Do not backdate current Google Home Premium pricing to 2024. The current Google Store pages list later plans and prices, but those are not evidence of what a 2024 buyer paid.

Google Home is not the same as the legacy Nest app

App compatibility is a buying criterion. Some newer devices, including the battery Nest Doorbell, require Google Home rather than the older Nest app. “Works with Google Home” does not mean every legacy feature remains available in the same app, nor that every device supports identical controls.

Camera privacy

Before placing a camera-equipped product in a home, ask whether the location is appropriate, whether cloud recording is acceptable and whether the subscription is worth the cost. The Hub Max has a camera; the second-generation Nest Hub does not. A physical microphone or camera control is useful, but it is not the same thing as a guarantee that no data is processed.

Which Nest products should you skip?

  • Skip the Hub Max in private rooms. Use the camera-free Nest Hub (2nd gen) for a bedroom or privacy-sensitive location.
  • Skip a battery doorbell where continuous recording matters. Choose a continuously powered solution instead.
  • Skip any thermostat bought without an HVAC compatibility check. Installation problems can erase the apparent savings.
  • Skip a Nest Wifi Pro upgrade that solves no coverage problem. Keep a stable existing network if it already meets your needs.
  • Skip a battery camera mounted where charging is difficult. Use a powered camera when reliable, continuous operation matters.
  • Skip old Nest products at near-full price. Aging support, app migration and accessory availability should be reflected in the price.

Google Nest compared with alternatives

Google Nest was especially attractive to Android users and households invested in Google Photos, Google Assistant and Google Home. It was not automatically the best ecosystem for everyone.

  • Ring or Arlo: worth considering for broader camera and doorbell ranges, with different subscription and privacy models.
  • ecobee: often a stronger candidate where thermostat compatibility or room-sensor features are the priority.
  • Amazon Echo and Alexa: a better fit for households already centered on Amazon services and third-party Alexa compatibility.
  • Eero: worth comparing when simple mesh networking and Amazon integration matter more than Nest ecosystem integration.
  • Apple Home and HomePod: better suited to Apple-first households, especially those prioritizing Apple ecosystem integration.

These alternatives should be compared using current official specifications and subscription terms; their inclusion here is a use-case guide rather than a hands-on ranking.

Final 2024 buying guide

Buy the Nest Hub Max if you want the broadest all-purpose Google smart-home device for a kitchen or family room.

Buy the Nest Hub (2nd gen) if you want a smaller, camera-free display for a bedroom or bedside table.
