What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—but only within Google’s smart-home ecosystem. Gemini for Home is Google’s official successor to Google Assistant on compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and smart displays. It does not replace the software inside every smart device, and it does not mean every Gemini feature is available on every device or without a subscription.
As of August 16, 2026, the change is rolling out by country, language, account, firmware and device. Most existing compatible hardware does not need to be replaced, but Google says the migration cannot be reversed once a home switches.

What Gemini for Home replaces
Gemini for Home is Google’s broader smart-home platform. Its voice assistant is replacing Google Assistant on compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays, while related features extend into the Google Home app, cameras, doorbells and automations.
This is separate from Google’s changes to Assistant on Android phones, tablets, watches, headphones, cars and other mobile-linked products. The relevant transition here is the one affecting Google’s smart-home devices.

Google describes Gemini for Home as a more conversational assistant that can handle natural-language requests, follow-up questions, reminders, media, household coordination and smart-home controls. Those are product capabilities Google describes; actual behavior can vary by device, integration, language and account.

- Compatible devices added later inherit the Gemini voice assistant.
- A device that becomes compatible later is expected to switch automatically.
- Some older devices may receive most Gemini features without supporting every feature, especially Gemini Live.
Because the migration is irreversible, households that depend on predictable legacy routines or commands may prefer to wait until the feature is available and understood in their region.
Google’s current support documentation explains the migration and eligibility rules.
Compatible speakers and displays
Google lists these first-party devices as supporting the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant, subject to rollout and minimum firmware requirements:
- Google Home Speaker (2026)
- Google Nest Hub, second generation
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Mini, second generation
- Google Nest Hub Max
- Google Nest Hub, first generation
- Google Home Mini, first generation
The listed minimum firmware versions are:
- Speakers: Cast firmware 3.76 or higher
- Displays: Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher
Google’s consumer page describes support for Google Home and Nest speakers and displays released since 2016, but the device-specific support page is the better source for current exceptions. Compatibility also depends on country, language, account eligibility and rollout status.

How to check and opt in
- Confirm that your country, language, Google account and device are eligible.
- Update the Google Home app.
- On Android, update Speech Recognition and Synthesis if Google prompts you to do so.
- Wait for an eligibility notification or setup prompt in the Google Home app.
- Follow the in-app instructions and confirm the change for the home.
- Test a basic request with “Hey Google” or “OK Google.”
Google does not publish one universal menu path for every app version and region, so a missing prompt does not necessarily indicate a hardware fault.

What is included without a subscription?
Google presents the core Gemini for Home voice-assistant update as included with compatible devices where the feature is available. Basic requests may include:
- “Hey Google, turn on the living-room lights.”
- “Hey Google, what’s the weather this afternoon?”
- “Hey Google, remind me to take out the bins tonight.”
- Media playback and broadcast
- General information and household coordination
- Natural-language smart-home control
Free access does not mean every Gemini capability is free. Gemini Live, advanced automation assistance and several camera features are associated with Google Home Premium and compatible hardware.
What Google Home Premium adds
U.S. pricing and features below were listed by Google on August 16, 2026. Availability varies by country, device, language and account.

| Plan | Listed U.S. price | Examples of included features |
|---|---|---|
| Google Home Premium Standard | $10/month or $100/year | 30 days of event-based video history, intelligent alerts, Gemini Live on speakers and displays, and “Help me create” automation assistance |
| Google Home Premium Advanced | $20/month or $200/year | Everything in Standard, 60 days of event-based history, 24/7 video history, descriptive notifications, video-history search, event descriptions and daily summaries |
Google Home Premium is not simply a chatbot subscription. It also combines Gemini features with Nest camera and doorbell security, alerts and video-history features. Users interested only in the basic voice-assistant replacement do not generally need Premium.
See Google’s current U.S. plan page for terms and eligibility.
Gemini Live is not the same as basic Gemini
Gemini Live is the more conversational, back-and-forth mode, with follow-up questions and interruptions. A device may support the standard Gemini for Home assistant while not supporting Gemini Live. Gemini Live may also require Google Home Premium, a supported device, and availability in the user’s country and language.
Do not treat “Gemini-compatible” as a guarantee that every premium or conversational feature works on that device.
Cameras, doorbells and third-party products
Google is also extending Gemini for Home into the Google Home app, cameras and doorbells. Depending on the plan and hardware, features may include richer event descriptions, descriptive notifications, video-history search and daily summaries.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
These camera features are not automatically part of the free voice-assistant transition. They depend on the camera or doorbell model, subscription tier, enabled features and regional availability.
Third-party lights, plugs, thermostats, locks and cameras are different. Gemini may interpret a request more naturally, but the product still needs to be linked to Google Home and support the requested function. Gemini does not replace the firmware or built-in assistant inside every third-party smart-home product.
Do you need the new Google Home Speaker?
No. The $99.99 Google Home Speaker is not required simply to receive the basic Gemini for Home voice assistant on compatible existing hardware.
It may make sense for buyers who want newer audio and microphones, a new warranty, Matter hub functionality, Thread border-router capability or hardware designed specifically around Gemini. Google lists Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, three far-field microphones, a hardware microphone mute switch and a 58 mm full-range driver among its specifications.
Google’s U.S. store also listed six months of Google Home Premium Standard with qualifying purchases through a dated promotion, subject to its terms. Check the product page and offer terms before buying.

No Gemini opt-in notification
Check your country, language, account, device model, firmware and rollout status. Updating the Google Home app—and Speech Recognition and Synthesis on Android when prompted—may resolve setup issues, but eligibility is still controlled by Google’s rollout.
Only some devices appear to change
Confirm that every speaker or display is on the supported list and meets the required Cast or Fuchsia firmware version. A compatible home does not make unsupported hardware compatible.
Gemini Live is missing
Check the Premium plan, device generation, country, language and account rollout. Basic Gemini access and Gemini Live have separate requirements.

A camera feature is unavailable
Check the camera or doorbell model, Premium tier, feature settings and local availability. Advanced video-history features are not guaranteed by the voice-assistant migration.
A third-party command fails
Verify that the device is linked to Google Home and that the requested operation is supported. A device appearing in the app does not guarantee support for every command.
The answer or action is unexpected
Rephrase the request more explicitly and verify the result in the Google Home app. Google-generated answers can be wrong, and natural-language interpretation can be less predictable than a rigid command. Confirm security-sensitive actions such as unlocking a door, opening a garage or changing an alarm rather than relying on an unverified response.

Gemini for Home depends on the Google Home app, Wi-Fi, internet connectivity and Google’s service availability. Camera descriptions and cloud-based AI also raise privacy considerations that households should assess before enabling them.
The new Google Home Speaker includes a physical microphone mute switch. That is useful for households that want a straightforward hardware control, but muting the microphone prevents voice activation until it is switched back on.
Google’s product materials describe intended capabilities, not a guarantee that every request will work consistently across every integration. Existing routines, media services and commands may not behave identically after the transition.
Should you switch now?
- Opt in now if you have compatible hardware, want more conversational control and accept that Google says the change cannot be reversed.
- Wait if you depend on legacy routines, need maximum predictability, or the features you want are not yet available in your region.
- Buy new hardware if you need better audio, a warranty, Matter and Thread support, or a Gemini-first device—not merely because Google Assistant is being replaced.
- Choose Premium Standard if Gemini Live or natural-language automation assistance matters to you.
- Consider Premium Advanced if you use compatible Nest cameras or doorbells and want extended history, search, summaries or descriptive alerts.
Alternatives outside Google Home
Alexa and Echo may suit homes already built around Amazon devices and routines. Apple Home and HomePod are a stronger fit for Apple-centered households. Samsung SmartThings is relevant to homes built around Samsung appliances and compatible devices. Local-control platforms can reduce cloud dependence but usually require more technical setup.
Moving to any of these alternatives is a platform change, not a simple software update for an existing Google Home installation.
The bottom line
Gemini for Home is the official replacement for Google Assistant on compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. It is a staged, account-level migration—not a universal replacement for the software in every smart device and not a mandatory reason to buy new hardware.
Before opting in, check compatibility and firmware, separate basic Gemini from Gemini Live and paid camera features, and decide whether you are comfortable with Google’s stated one-way switch.
