The Best Gas Ranges, According to Industry Pros: 6 Picks for Different Kitchens

There is no single gas range that is best for every kitchen. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize burner power, low-temperature control, baking performance, convenience features, capacity, or a standard 30-inch footprint.

For a premium 36-inch all-gas range, the Wolf GR366 is the strongest overall fit for serious cooks who want six burners and straightforward professional-style construction. The BlueStar Platinum BSPGR304B is the specialist choice for maximum burner output and very low published simmering. For a conventional 30-inch slide-in, the Bosch 800 Series HGI8056UC offers the most practical blend of features and installation familiarity. The Viking Professional 5 Series earned Good Housekeeping’s best-overall 36-inch designation in its May 2025 laboratory roundup, although the tested model was dual-fuel rather than all-gas.

Also worth considering are Thermador Pro Harmony for ExtraLow simmering and luxury configurations, and GE Café’s gas slide-in platform for shoppers who want a six-burner, double-oven layout in approximately the space of a standard 30-inch range.

The six best gas ranges by use case

The recommendations below are deliberately divided by purpose rather than presented as a universal ranking. Manufacturer specifications and prices are identified as such; independent testing is identified separately. Prices are United States figures from the reviewed materials and can change with configuration, dealer pricing, promotions, installation, and availability.

1. Best premium 36-inch all-gas range: Wolf GR366

The Wolf GR366 is the best fit in this group for a serious home cook who wants a true professional-style, all-gas range with six full-size burners and no built-in griddle taking up cooking space.

Wolf’s current quick-reference specifications list six sealed dual-stacked burners: one rated at 9,200 BTUs and five rated at 15,000 BTUs. The range also has a 30,000-BTU gas oven burner, an 18,000-BTU infrared broiler, automatic flame reignition, continuous cast-iron grates, a large-capacity gas convection oven, and sealed porcelain-coated burner pans. Wolf lists the GR366 at $8,955 on its United States product page, but the final installed price can differ substantially.

The dual-stacked burner design is useful because it separates high-output cooking from low-temperature control at the burner, rather than treating simmering as an afterthought. The six-burner layout is also more flexible than a range with a permanent griddle or charbroiler if you regularly use several pots and pans at once.

The GR366 is available for natural gas or LP configurations. Wolf also lists accessories such as wok grates, bake-stone kits, risers, trim, and model-specific replacement knobs. If you need a wok grate or are replacing worn controls, verify the exact model and generation before ordering Wolf GR366 accessories.

Choose it if: you want six burners, professional-style construction, automatic reignition, and a relatively uncluttered cooktop.

Look elsewhere if: you want a lower price, a double oven, smart features, or a built-in griddle and charbroiler.

Longevity note: Wolf discusses long-term stress testing and durability goals, but the evidence reviewed does not establish a guaranteed 20-year service life. No premium appliance should be purchased on the assumption that a specific lifespan is promised.

2. Best for high heat and low simmering: BlueStar Platinum BSPGR304B

The 30-inch BlueStar Platinum Series BSPGR304B is the most compelling option here for cooks who care more about burner behavior than smart controls or convenience features.

BlueStar specifies X-8 sealed burners with front burners reaching up to 25,000 BTUs. It publishes a 500-BTU low setting on every burner, along with a 30,000-BTU oven burner and a 15,000-BTU infrared broiler. The oven has continuous convection and is designed to accommodate commercial-size 18-by-26-inch baking sheets. BlueStar also claims a 10-minute oven preheat and offers more than 1,000 color choices. Its listed starting UMRP is $9,495.

That combination is unusual: high output is available across the front of the cooktop, while the published low setting is low enough to appeal to cooks who hold delicate sauces, melt chocolate, or keep food warm for extended periods. The all-gas oven and analog professional-appliance design will also appeal to buyers who prefer a less electronics-heavy cooking experience.

There is an important distinction between a specification and a test result. The 25,000-BTU output, 500-BTU simmer setting, and 10-minute preheat are manufacturer-published figures. The sources reviewed do not independently verify how quickly the oven preheats in a particular kitchen, how evenly it holds temperature, or how effectively every burner simmers under real cookware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: burner power, low simmering, large baking sheets, color selection, and a professional aesthetic matter most.

Look elsewhere if: you want extensive automation, a lower purchase price, a double oven, or independently verified performance data for the exact model.

3. Best mainstream 30-inch slide-in: Bosch 800 Series HGI8056UC

The Bosch 800 Series HGI8056UC is the practical choice for a homeowner who wants a 30-inch slide-in appearance without moving into the size, cost, and installation demands of a professional-style range.

Bosch lists five sealed burners, a 4.8-cubic-foot oven, continuous cast-iron grates, a warming drawer, a two-hour self-clean cycle, and nine cooking modes. Its natural-gas specification sheet lists 53,000 BTUs of total cooktop output, including an 18,000-BTU center burner, and an 18,000-BTU bake burner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The range is especially attractive in a remodel because Bosch describes it as fitting a standard freestanding-range cutout while presenting a slide-in, front-control appearance. That does not eliminate the need to check the exact installation guide: finished counter height, rear clearances, side clearances, flooring, and gas connection location still matter.

Bosch lists a United States price of $2,899, although its product information indicates that online availability can vary and that a local dealer may be necessary. Bosch also displays a 4.3-out-of-5 customer rating. That is a manufacturer-site customer rating, not an independent reliability study or laboratory score.

Choose it if: you want self-cleaning, a warming drawer, convection, familiar 30-inch dimensions, and more convenience features than most pro-style ranges offer.

Look elsewhere if: you need six burners, a larger oven, 25,000-BTU-class front burners, or the heavy commercial-style presence of a 36-inch range.

4. Best tested 36-inch platform: Viking Professional 5 Series

Good Housekeeping’s May 2025 laboratory roundup named the Viking Professional 5 Series Freestanding 36-Inch Gas Range its best overall 36-inch range. The publication credited the platform with strong broiling and baking, an effective self-clean cycle, and premium professional-grade construction.

The review lists six burners, a 5.1-cubic-foot oven, and burner ratings from 15,000 to 18,500 BTUs. Those are useful reasons to put Viking on a serious shortlist, especially when a buyer wants a wider range with a large oven and a professional-style control layout.

However, the testing qualification matters. Good Housekeeping stated that its laboratory tested the dual-fuel version and expected the all-gas model to perform similarly on the stovetop. That is not the same as independently testing the exact all-gas oven configuration. Buyers who specifically want an all-gas oven should not treat the review as a direct laboratory verdict on that model.

The same review reported uneven heat distribution when multiple trays were used and noted that the range lacked a preheat alert. Those are not necessarily deal-breakers, but they illustrate why a professional-looking range is not automatically superior for every baking task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: you want a 36-inch platform supported by recent hands-on testing, strong broiling and baking results in the tested configuration, and professional construction.

Look elsewhere if: you regularly bake on several oven racks, require a preheat signal, or specifically want independently tested results for an all-gas oven rather than a dual-fuel model.

5. Best luxury alternative for simmering: Thermador Pro Harmony

Thermador Pro Harmony is a credible luxury alternative for buyers who value low-temperature control and a broad range of width and configuration choices.

Thermador says its 30-inch gas range provides up to 59,000 total BTUs, convection bake, sealed Star burners, and ExtraLow simmering technology. The line is offered in multiple widths and configurations, including versions with a griddle. Thermador specifies a 300-CFM ventilation requirement for the 30-inch model, which should be addressed before cabinetry and hood plans are finalized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ExtraLow is meaningful for delicate cooking because it is designed to cycle the burner to maintain a lower simmer than a conventional burner may provide continuously. Even so, the existence of a named simmer feature does not by itself prove that the range is the best overall performer. Compare actual burner layout, oven modes, rack positions, service availability, installation clearances, and the ventilation plan.

Choose it if: low-temperature cooking, luxury styling, and configuration flexibility are more important than getting the most burner power for the money.

Look elsewhere if: you want a simple, easily compared 30-inch range or your kitchen cannot accommodate the required ventilation and installation clearances.

6. Best six-burner and double-oven layout in a standard-size kitchen: GE Café gas slide-in

GE Café’s gas and dual-fuel front-control slide-in platform is worth considering when capacity and convenience matter more than the open-burner layout and heavy construction of a true professional-style range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GE describes a six-burner, double-oven arrangement in the same general 30-inch space used by standard upright ranges. The current GE product ecosystem includes models such as CGS700P3MD1, while older model information identifies the CGS700P2MS1 as a 30-inch smart front-control gas range with convection.

Model suffixes are important. They can affect finish, control features, availability, and the exact oven or cooktop configuration. Confirm the full model number with the manufacturer or dealer before using a specification in a cabinet, electrical, or gas-line plan.

A double oven can be useful for cooking at two temperatures, but smaller oven compartments may restrict the size of roasting pans or baking sheets. Likewise, six burners do not automatically deliver better results than five well-designed burners. This is a capacity-and-convenience recommendation, not a claim that the GE Café will outperform the professional-style models.

Choose it if: you want two ovens and six burners without expanding to a 36-inch range opening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look elsewhere if: you regularly use oversized cookware, want the largest possible single oven, or prioritize professional-grade burner output and construction.

Professional-style versus conventional gas ranges

“Professional-style” describes a design philosophy, not a guarantee of better food. Consumer Reports generally uses the term for gas or dual-fuel ranges with features such as heavy-gauge stainless steel, insulated ovens, and continuous cast-iron grates.

Conventional ranges can still offer high-output burners, dedicated simmer burners, convection, digital displays, warming drawers, and preheat indicators, often at a lower price. Consumer Reports has also noted that highly rated conventional ranges can outperform highly rated pro-style models, while sometimes including convenience features that luxury ranges omit.

Choose a professional-style range because you need its width, burner arrangement, high output, heavy grates, larger oven, or integration with a particular kitchen design. Do not choose one solely because its knobs and stainless-steel panels look commercial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

All-gas or dual-fuel?

An all-gas range uses gas for both the cooktop and oven. A dual-fuel range combines gas burners with an electric oven. The better choice depends on which part of cooking matters most to you.

Choose all-gas when… Choose dual-fuel when…
You prefer the response and visual flame of gas on the cooktop and in the oven. You want an electric-oven platform for baking and roasting while retaining gas burners.
You want a generally simpler fuel arrangement and may avoid adding a 240-volt circuit. You are willing to plan for both gas service and the electrical requirements of the exact range.
You are buying a model whose gas-oven behavior suits your cooking. You regularly bake on multiple racks or place a high value on the type of heat an electric oven provides.

Yale Appliance’s buying guidance says all-gas professional ranges are generally about 10% to 15% less expensive than comparable dual-fuel professional ranges, though actual differences vary by brand, configuration, market, and installation. Do not state that electric ovens always bake better or that dual-fuel is always superior. Dual-fuel gives you an electric oven platform that many bakers prefer; it does not eliminate the need to evaluate the specific model.

For construction planning, dual-fuel also means coordinating the gas connection with the required electrical circuit. Gas ranges require natural-gas or propane service. Electric oven components in a dual-fuel range require the electrical service specified by the installation documentation. Have the installer verify the exact requirements rather than assuming that an existing outlet or gas line is adequate.

What range width should you buy?

30 inches: the compatibility-first choice

Thirty inches is the broadest starting point for a standard kitchen. It is usually the easiest size to fit into an existing range opening, and it offers the widest selection of mainstream slide-in and freestanding models. Bosch HGI8056UC and the GE Café platform belong in this category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

36 inches: the practical entertaining size

A 36-inch range gives you more room for six burners, multiple pans, or a griddle. Yale Appliance describes 36 inches as a practical sweet spot for serious cooking and entertaining. Wolf GR366 and Viking’s Professional 5 Series represent this wider professional-style approach.

48 or 60 inches: a major renovation decision

At 48 or 60 inches, the range becomes a major part of the kitchen plan. These sizes commonly add a second oven, griddle, charbroiler, French top, or additional burner capacity. They may also require more ventilation, greater gas capacity, a wider hood, cabinet changes, reinforced delivery planning, and more expensive service access.

A wider range is not automatically better. Measure the cookware you actually use, the number of people you cook for, the available landing space beside the range, and the hood and duct route before committing to the largest model that fits.

Installation checklist for a gas range

  1. Confirm the fuel. Verify whether the home has natural gas or LP service. If the range can be converted, use the manufacturer’s approved conversion components and a qualified installer.
  2. Obtain the exact installation guide. Check the model-specific cutout width, depth, finished-counter height, rear clearance, side clearance, combustible-surface rules, anti-tip requirements, and gas-connection location. Product pages and dealer listings are not substitutes for the installation manual.
  3. Coordinate the hood before cabinets are finalized. A high-output range needs a ventilation plan that accounts for hood width, capture area, duct size, duct length, elbows, discharge location, noise, and local code. Wolf recommends professional ventilation for its sealed-burner rangetops, and Thermador specifies 300 CFM for its 30-inch Pro Harmony gas range.
  4. Prefer outdoor-vented exhaust when possible. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends exhaust that captures combustion products and vents them outdoors. A ducted range hood is a task-enabling purchase, but it is not automatically compatible with every range. Verify its width, duct diameter, airflow, noise rating, installation configuration, and local-code requirements.
  5. Do not choose by advertised CFM alone. Consumer Reports cautions that more airflow does not necessarily mean better smoke capture and removal. Hood design, depth, placement, ducting, and how much of the plume the hood captures are equally important. Consumer Reports generally does not recommend recirculating ductless hoods for serious cooking.
  6. Plan makeup air where required. A powerful exhaust system can depressurize a house. EPA guidance warns that excessive exhaust may contribute to combustion-appliance backdrafting. The installer or ventilation designer should determine whether makeup air is required by local code and appropriate for the home.
  7. Use qualified gas installation. Gas-line sizing, shutoff placement, leak testing, regulator setup, LP conversion, and combustion checks should be handled by qualified professionals. This article does not recommend DIY gas work.
  8. Plan delivery and service access. Confirm the path through doors, hallways, stairs, and finished rooms. For 36-inch and wider ranges, reserve enough room to remove panels and reach service components without dismantling cabinets.

For a major remodel, arranging professional range installation and a review of makeup air for a range hood before ordering cabinets can prevent expensive changes later.

Gas-range ventilation and indoor air quality

Gas combustion can produce nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, particles, and other combustion products. The EPA recommends properly adjusted and maintained appliances, outdoor-vented exhaust, and ventilation during use. Consumer Reports has reported potentially concerning nitrogen-oxide emissions from some gas ranges, including with one burner operating.

  • HEAT-RESISTANT ALUMINUM: Stovetop cover made from durable, heat-resistant aluminum designed to handle daily cooking temperatures. Reliable protection that holds up under regular use while shielding your stovetop from spills.
  • AMERICAN BRAND QUALITY: Linda’s Essentials is a family-owned brand trusted by over 5 million customers worldwide. We’re dedicated to creating high-quality, reliable products that make everyday life easier in your kitchen and home

This is a reason to take ventilation and maintenance seriously, not a basis for claiming that every gas range creates the same exposure or that a particular model eliminates emissions. Use the hood whenever cooking, cook on rear burners when practical, and leave the hood running for roughly 10 to 20 minutes afterward when appropriate. Clean the grease filter regularly and keep burners, ports, and surrounding surfaces free of buildup.

A hood that recirculates air through a filter may reduce some grease and odor, but it does not provide the same outdoor removal of combustion products as a properly installed ducted system. The best ventilation approach depends on the home’s construction, duct route, range output, local requirements, and combustion appliances.

Maintenance and ownership considerations

Sealed burners and continuous cast-iron grates are convenient, but they are not maintenance-free. Remove spills before they bake onto the surface, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for grate cleaning, and avoid tools or chemicals that can damage enamel, porcelain, stainless steel, burner caps, or igniters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A gas range cleaning kit can be useful for routine grate and surface maintenance, but check that its brush, pads, and cleaner are safe for the specific grate finish. Cleaning tools are not substitutes for professional burner adjustment, gas-line service, leak testing, or repair.

Before choosing a premium range, ask who will service it locally, how parts are obtained, how long service appointments typically take, and whether the dealer coordinates delivery, installation, and warranty work. The available research does not support naming any of these brands as definitively the most reliable. Local service quality can matter as much as a small difference in burner output.

A decision framework for homeowners and remodelers

  1. Start with the opening. If the kitchen is built around a 30-inch cutout, begin with Bosch or GE Café-style options unless the project includes cabinet and ventilation changes.
  2. Choose the cooking surface. Select five burners and convenience features for practical everyday use, six burners for simultaneous pan cooking, or a griddle or charbroiler only if you will genuinely use it.
  3. Choose the oven fuel. Stay all-gas for a simpler gas-throughout setup and choose dual-fuel if an electric oven is a priority for your baking and roasting habits.
  4. Match capacity to cookware. Check whether your largest roasting pan, baking sheet, Dutch oven, or commercial-size sheet fits the oven and can be lifted comfortably through the door.
  5. Design ventilation around the range. Do not order the range, hood, cabinets, and ductwork as separate decisions. The range output and installation guide should drive the ventilation plan.
  6. Verify service before signing. Ask for local authorized service coverage, expected lead times, parts support, delivery constraints, and the installed price.
  7. Compare total project cost. Include the range, hood, ductwork, makeup air if required, gas-line work, electrical work for dual-fuel, cabinet modifications, delivery, installation, and future service access.

How the finalists compare

Pick the Wolf GR366 if the priority is a premium 36-inch all-gas range with six burners and a clean, purpose-built professional layout.

Pick the BlueStar BSPGR304B if the priority is maximum high-heat output on the front burners combined with a very low published simmer setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick the Bosch HGI8056UC if the kitchen needs a conventional 30-inch slide-in with self-cleaning, a warming drawer, convection, and useful everyday modes.

Pick the Viking Professional 5 Series if you want the 36-inch platform that Good Housekeeping rated best overall in its reviewed roundup, while remembering that the lab-tested version was dual-fuel.

Pick Thermador Pro Harmony if ExtraLow simmering, luxury styling, and multiple configurations justify the price and ventilation planning.

Pick GE Café if two ovens and six burners in a roughly standard 30-inch layout matter more than professional-style burner power and construction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a professional-style gas range better than a conventional range?

Not automatically. Professional-style ranges typically emphasize heavy construction, continuous cast-iron grates, high burner output, and wider layouts. Conventional ranges can provide strong burners, convection, self-cleaning, digital controls, warming drawers, and preheat alerts for less money. Choose the design that matches your cooking and renovation requirements rather than assuming the professional appearance guarantees better results.

Is all-gas or dual-fuel better for baking?

Dual-fuel gives you gas burners with an electric oven, which many shoppers prefer for baking and multi-rack cooking. That does not mean every electric oven is better or that every dual-fuel model will outperform every all-gas model. Compare the exact oven design, modes, rack layout, testing, and installation requirements.

What size gas range is best for most kitchens?

A 30-inch range is the easiest starting point for a standard kitchen opening. A 36-inch range is a practical upgrade for cooks who need six burners or more room for multiple pans. Forty-eight- and 60-inch ranges are major renovation decisions that can require wider hoods, additional gas capacity, cabinet changes, and more complicated delivery and service access.

Does a gas range require an outdoor-vented hood?

Outdoor-vented exhaust is the preferred approach for removing cooking smoke and combustion products when the home’s design allows it. The exact hood and duct requirements depend on the range, airflow, duct route, local code, and makeup-air rules. A recirculating hood should not be selected solely because it is easier to install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many BTUs should a gas range have?

There is no useful universal BTU target. Higher published BTUs can support faster heating, but real cooking performance also depends on burner design, cookware, flame control, grate geometry, and ventilation. Treat manufacturer BTU figures as specifications, not guaranteed cooking results, and balance high output against your need for low simmering.

Are gas ranges safe for indoor air quality?

Gas combustion can produce nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, particles, and other byproducts. Use a properly installed outdoor-vented hood when possible, run it while cooking and afterward, use rear burners when practical, maintain the appliance, and have gas equipment serviced by qualified professionals. Exposure varies with the appliance, home, ventilation, and cooking habits; no single model should be described as eliminating emissions.

The Bottom Line

The best gas range is the one whose burner layout, oven fuel, width, ventilation, and service plan match the kitchen. Choose Wolf for a premium 36-inch all-gas setup, BlueStar for burner-focused performance, Bosch for practical 30-inch convenience, Viking for the strongest independently reviewed 36-inch platform in the cited roundup, Thermador for luxury simmering and configuration options, or GE Café for a six-burner, double-oven layout in a standard-size space.
