Which electric heater is best for your space?
Portable electric heaters are best treated as supplemental heat for an occupied area, not as a replacement for a home’s primary heating system. Wirecutter notes that electric resistance heaters convert the electricity they consume directly into heat; that fact alone does not establish that one model is more energy-efficient than another. For choosing among these picks, consider how quickly heat reaches you, how evenly it spreads, and whether warmth lingers after the unit is switched off.

For quieter, lingering warmth
Oil-filled radiators take longer to heat, but Wirecutter characterizes them as quiet and says they retain ambient warmth. Choose this style if low operating noise and heat that lasts after switch-off matter more than a quick blast of directed warmth. These are general characteristics of the type, not a claim that every radiator performs identically.
What independent heater tests measure
Product rankings depend on the test setup and the models compared. Wirecutter says it has researched more than 100 models and tested more than 80 since 2011. Its staff ran heaters for four hours, measured temperature changes at three and six feet, and assessed noise and casing and grille temperatures; Wirecutter also consulted a paid tester panel. The VH200 results above belong to that testing context.

Use a portable heater safely
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were associated with annual averages of 1,600 fires, 70 deaths, and 150 injuries in the United States during 2020–2022. These are period-specific estimates, not counts for 2026. [CPSC, January 23, 2026]

- Maintain working smoke alarms on every level and inside each bedroom. CPSC also advises CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas; its carbon-monoxide warnings primarily concern fuel-burning appliances, not electric resistance heaters.
Look for documented tip-over and overheat protections, and check whether a model has independent safety certification. Those features do not replace correct placement and use. CPSC identifies UL 1278 as a standard for movable and wall- or ceiling-hung electric room heaters, and discusses past concerns about thermally damaged plugs and inconsistent plug-blade connections.
