The Best Door Locks for Apartment Buildings: A Practical Guide

The best apartment-building lock depends on the scope: Schlage Control for centralized multifamily access control, or a properly specified Grade 1 deadbolt for an individual unit door.

There is no single best lock for every apartment building. Property-wide security usually calls for a multifamily access-control system such as Schlage Control, while an individual apartment door may be better served by a properly specified mechanical Grade 1 deadbolt such as the Schlage B600 series—or, for a residential replacement, the Schlage B60.

The correct choice also depends on egress, fire-door listings, accessibility, door compatibility, local code, and whether the owner or property manager approves the change.

Apartment-building locks solve two different problems:

  • Building-wide access control: manages residents, staff, common areas, credentials, turnover, and audit information across many openings.
  • Individual unit security: secures one apartment entrance, often without centralized administration.

A consumer smart deadbolt may be convenient for one homeowner, but it is not automatically suitable for a multifamily property. A building-wide system must also address credential revocation, emergency access, common entrances, fire and life safety, software integration, batteries or power, and maintenance.

Best for building-wide multifamily access control: Schlage Control

Schlage describes its Control mobile-enabled smart lock as being designed specifically for multifamily residence doors. It supports smartphone or smart-credential entry, audit-trail reporting for up to 1,000 events, AES-256 encryption, low-battery notifications, and offline or networked operation.

Its most important advantage for property operators is administration. Credentials can be assigned, deleted, or updated centrally, and Schlage’s “no-tour” operation can send credential updates to doors without staff visiting every apartment. That is substantially different from rekeying locks or collecting physical keys after a resident moves out.

Schlage places Control on resident unit doors within a broader multifamily hardware portfolio, with other devices used for offices, amenities, and common entrances. Schlage ENGAGE provides basic access-control management for compatible devices including Control, NDE, LE, and XE360.

When Control is the right direction

  • The property needs centralized credential management.
  • Residents need mobile or electronic credentials.
  • Management needs access-event records.
  • Resident turnover makes physical key control inefficient.
  • The system must coordinate unit doors with entrances, amenities, offices, or property-management software.

Control should be specified as part of a complete access-control design, not installed casually like a renter’s smart-home accessory. The project should define credential policies, emergency procedures, network or offline operation, battery maintenance, door assemblies, and administrator permissions.

Best high-security mechanical direction: Schlage B600 Series

For an individual apartment entrance that does not need centralized electronic access, the Schlage B600 Series is the strongest mechanical option identified in this research. Schlage describes it as a commercial Grade 1 deadbolt family.

Hicarer 1 Pack Commercial Keyless Door Lock with Keypad Lever, Silver
  • 3-in-1 Keyless Entry for Shared Doors: unlock with a personal code, an access card, or the included backup key, so staff and tenants each get their own way in; Suits offices, apartments, and warehouses, and there is no rekeying when someone leaves, no keys to collect back
  • Measure Before Ordering: fits 1.18-2.36 in thick doors with a 2.36 in/ 60 mm backset and a 2.17 in/ 55 mm bore hole; Leave 4.7 in above the hole and check door handing, as this commercial lock is built for standard pre-drilled doors, and odd cutouts may need drilling
  • Reversible Lever for Left or Right Handed Doors: the handle flips to match your door swing and the keypad stays upright whichever way you mount it; Works on in-swing and out-swing doors in offices, apartments, and interior entryways, so one lock fits either direction
  • Standalone Operation with No Wi-fi or App: this electronic keypad lock runs on batteries and stores codes inside the lock itself, with no network, no subscription, and no account to set up; Add or delete user codes right on the keypad, and issue a temporary code in seconds
  • Stainless Steel Build with Everything in One Box: a metal lock body and zinc alloy keypad panel stand up to daily use in busy doorways, and the box includes the lock set, access cards, backup keys, a screwdriver, and mounting hardware; No extra parts to buy

Depending on the model and configuration, the B600 family offers:

  • Adjustable 2 3/8-inch or 2 3/4-inch backsets.
  • Multiple functions and cylinder formats.
  • ADA-compliant thumbturn designs.
  • A sintered-steel bolt and hardened anti-saw pin.
  • A metal dust box and 3-inch screws for deeper frame anchoring.
  • Available UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 listings for certain three-hour fire-rated auxiliary-lock configurations.

Those details matter because deadbolt security depends on more than the cylinder. The bolt, strike, screws, frame, door construction, and installation all contribute to resistance against prying, sawing, and frame failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important: Not every B600 configuration is automatically approved for every fire-rated door or jurisdiction. The exact function and listing must match the complete door assembly.

Best commercial Grade 2 option: Schlage B500/B560

The Schlage B500 Series is a commercial Grade 2 deadbolt family. The B560 is its single-cylinder deadbolt function. The series is available in multiple functions and cylinder formats and includes features such as anti-saw, anti-pry, anti-wrench, and cylinder-security measures. Some configurations are available for fire-rated applications.

Grade 2 is not automatically an inappropriate choice. It can suit lighter-duty or budget-sensitive openings when the traffic level, security objectives, door assembly, and code requirements fit. However, a project that specifically needs the higher Grade 1 classification should be directed toward a Grade 1 product such as the B600 family instead.

Best practical replacement phrase for one apartment door: Schlage B60 deadbolt

For a reader looking for a physical residential replacement rather than a property-wide system, “Schlage B60 deadbolt” is the most defensible product-search phrase identified in the research. Schlage identifies the B60 as a Grade 1 deadbolt for residential single- and multifamily doors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schlage’s product guidance explains the referenced Grade 1 threshold as 250,000 cycles and 10 door strikes with a hammer. That is a manufacturer explanation of the standard’s performance threshold, not an independent test of every installation.

The B60 is appropriate to consider for an individual unit door when the existing opening is compatible and the owner, landlord, condominium, or cooperative permits the replacement. It is not a substitute for a building-wide access-control platform.

Comparison: which type fits your project?

Option Best fit Credential model Administration Main limitation
Schlage Control Multifamily properties and resident unit doors Smartphone or electronic credential Centralized assignment, deletion, updates, and audit information Requires professional system design, maintenance, and compatible door assemblies
Schlage B600 High-security mechanical apartment or multifamily openings Key or specified cylinder format Rekeying and physical key control Does not provide centralized electronic access management
Schlage B500/B560 Commercial Grade 2 openings with appropriate traffic and security needs Key or specified cylinder format Physical key administration Lower classification than Grade 1
Schlage B60 Individual residential single- or multifamily unit doors Keyed deadbolt Physical keys and rekeying Not a property-wide access-control solution

Code and life-safety requirements come first

A lock’s security rating or smart features do not override building code. The locally adopted code, amendments, and authority having jurisdiction control. Model-code provisions are useful references, but they are not universal legal approval.

Egress and electrical locking systems

The 2024 International Building Code requires doors in the means of egress to comply with its door and locking provisions. For applicable electrical locking systems, it addresses power loss, hardware release, sensor release, listed equipment, and readily operable egress.

2024 International Building Code, Chapter 10

The IBC also includes an exception allowing certain single-exit doors from individual dwelling or sleeping units to use a night latch, dead bolt, or security chain when the device can be opened from inside without a key or tool. Whether that exception applies depends on the specific opening and locally adopted code.

The 2024 International Property Maintenance Code states that where a dwelling-unit deadbolt is installed, it must be readily openable from the egress side without keys, special knowledge, or effort and must have a minimum 1-inch lock throw.

Fire-rated doors and assemblies

An electronic or mechanical lock does not make a fire-door assembly compliant simply because the product is marketed for apartments. The exact lock function, door, frame, hardware, installation, and listing must be evaluated together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

UL 294 addresses access-control system units, while UL 1034 addresses certain burglary-resistant electric locking mechanisms and related applications. Those standards are not interchangeable, and a lock’s listing must match the intended use and complete assembly.

Accessibility

The ADA 2010 Standards state:

“Operable parts shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist.”

U.S. Department of Justice, 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design

The standards specify a maximum activation force of 5 pounds for covered operable parts. Lever-style or otherwise accessible operating hardware may be appropriate, but legal compliance depends on the applicable rules, opening, mounting height, and installation.

For many required openings, the 2024 IBC also identifies a 32-inch minimum clear opening, subject to the code’s exceptions. Replacing hardware must not reduce the required clear width or interfere with door operation.

Apartment-door compatibility checklist

Before ordering or installing any lock, verify the following:

  1. Opening type: Is it a unit entrance, common entrance, stairwell, amenity, storage, or exit door?
  2. Authority: Are you a renter, owner, property manager, developer, or contractor? Renters should obtain written approval before changing hardware.
  3. Existing geometry: Check door thickness, backset, bore size, latch, strike, frame, handing, and existing lock case.
  4. Fire rating: Determine whether the door is part of a rated assembly and confirm that the exact lock configuration is listed for it.
  5. Egress: Confirm that occupants can exit as required without a key, special knowledge, or excessive effort.
  6. Accessibility: Check one-hand operation, grasping and twisting requirements, activation force, mounting height, and reach range.
  7. Electronic resilience: Define battery replacement, low-battery alerts, mechanical overrides, emergency credentials, network outages, and power failures.
  8. Integration: Confirm compatibility with the property’s access-control, intercom, credential, and property-management systems.
  9. Lifecycle support: Plan for lost credentials, resident turnover, staff permissions, software support, and replacement parts.
  10. Professional installation: Use a licensed locksmith, door-hardware specialist, or access-control integrator when the opening is fire-rated, shared, electronically controlled, or otherwise unusual.

What landlords and property managers should decide

For a new development or major retrofit, begin with the building’s access policy rather than a lock catalog. Decide which residents, staff, contractors, emergency personnel, and guests need access; which events must be recorded; how credentials will be issued and revoked; and how the system will operate during network, battery, or power failures.

For a smaller property that does not need centralized credentials, a commercial mechanical deadbolt may be simpler and easier to maintain. In that case, compare the B600 and B500/B560 families based on Grade 1 versus Grade 2 requirements, traffic, cylinder strategy, fire-door conditions, and budget—not on the grade alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For a whole apartment property, Schlage Control is the best-fit category among the researched options because it was designed for multifamily resident doors and supports centralized electronic credentials, audit information, and no-tour updates. For a single apartment-unit door, consider a properly fitted Grade 1 mechanical deadbolt: the Schlage B600 for a commercial high-security direction or the Schlage B60 for a residential replacement. The final choice must be approved for the specific door assembly and checked against local egress, fire, accessibility, and property rules.
