For most vegetable gardeners, the best cold frame is a sturdy, low box with a clear hinged lid that can be propped open at different heights. Choose dimensions that fit your bed and let you reach the crops, and secure a lightweight frame against wind. No single commercial model is established as a universal winner; the right choice depends on your site, crops, and willingness to build or maintain it.
What a cold frame does—and what it cannot do
A cold frame is a bottomless box topped with a transparent cover. Sunlight warms the soil and the enclosed air during the day; the structure and ground release some of that warmth after sunset. It is normally unheated, unlike a hotbed, which has an added heat source.
That makes a cold frame useful for cool-season vegetables, hardening off transplants, and extending harvest at the edges of the growing season. It is not a walk-in greenhouse or a source of active heat for severe conditions. Because its enclosed air volume is small, temperatures can swing quickly and the frame needs attention.
What to look for when choosing one
Ventilation you can control
Choose a hinged lid that is easy to lift and secure at several openings. Ventilation matters as much as the cover: a sunny day can overheat the interior even when the outdoor air feels cool. A thermometer makes it easier to judge conditions. An automatic gas- or wax-cylinder opener is optional; check that it is compatible with the lid’s weight and mounting arrangement.

A reachable footprint and suitable height
Measure the bed before buying or building. You should be able to reach the plants without stepping into the frame, and the depth should suit both your reach and the crops’ height. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends a depth of no more than 3 feet and gives an example that slopes from about 12 inches high at the front to 18 inches at the back. These are design guidelines, not mandatory dimensions; adapt them to your bed, access, and plants.
Frame, cover, and weather exposure
Frames can be made from wood, masonry, plastic lumber, or other suitable materials; clear covers include glass, rigid plastic, and fiberglass. The sources do not establish one material as best for every gardener or climate. Consider durability, upkeep, safety, and local weather when comparing a kit with a DIY build. Avoid wood treated with creosote or similar chemicals.

Lightweight portable frames are easier to move but can be vulnerable to gusts. The Royal Horticultural Society advises pegging them down. Where wind exposure is a concern, plan secure anchoring or choose a more substantial structure. Heavier wooden or masonry sides may also suit gardeners seeking added cold protection.
Match the design to the job
A low, sloping frame suits a garden bed and crops such as lettuce or radishes. A vertical mini-greenhouse can accommodate taller plants and shelves, but may offer less adjustable ventilation and can shade plants on lower shelves. If you need a custom footprint or can reuse materials, building a frame from a salvaged window sash and lumber is a practical alternative to buying a kit.

Ready-made kit or DIY build?

For either route, prioritize easy ventilation, reach, clear glazing, drainage, and secure placement over features that do not solve a need in your garden. No particular commercial model has been established as a tested winner.
Where to site and how to size a frame
Set the frame where the soil drains well and sunlight is strong. Iowa State Extension recommends a south-facing orientation in its context and suggests placing the north end near a building or fence to reduce heat loss. Local site conditions still matter: avoid a waterlogged spot and account for shade, prevailing wind, and convenient access.

For a sloped DIY design, the Iowa State example is up to 3 feet deep, about 12 inches high at the front, and 18 inches at the back. The slope admits more sunlight. Treat those figures as a useful starting point rather than a universal standard, and make sure the back remains reachable.

Cool-season crops are a natural fit. Iowa State Extension names lettuce, spinach, and radishes; University of Vermont Extension also lists kale and scallions. A cold frame can also help harden off tender transplants and protect crops for a later fall harvest.

Extension guidance describes possible season gains, not guaranteed performance. Iowa State says suitable plantings in its Iowa context may be started two to four weeks earlier, depending on weather. University of Vermont Extension (2024) says suitable crops may be started two to four weeks before recommended planting time and that fall harvest may continue two weeks or more beyond first frost. Local weather, crop choice, and how consistently the frame is managed affect results.
How to manage ventilation and temperature
- Monitor the interior. Use a thermometer and check the frame regularly; do not rely on outdoor temperature alone.
- Vent when it warms. Iowa State Extension advises raising the sash when the internal air temperature exceeds 85°F. Open it enough to release excess heat; a small opening can help regulate temperature.
- Close before sunset. Iowa State Extension advises closing the sash before sunset to retain warmth overnight.
- Check forecasts and airflow. University of Vermont Extension advises checking forecasts and monitoring airflow. Continue checking on cloudy days as Iowa State Extension advises; conditions inside can still require attention.
The Royal Horticultural Society notes that walk-in glasshouses and polythene tunnels provide a more manageable environment because their larger air volume buffers temperature and humidity swings. A cold frame is a useful small-space accessory, but its compact interior makes attentive ventilation particularly important.
