For common U.S. residential copper branch circuits, 14 AWG is generally paired with 15-amp protection and 12 AWG with 20-amp protection. The lower AWG number means the conductor is thicker: 12 AWG is not interchangeable with 14 AWG just because both may appear in household wiring. The right choice depends on the circuit’s overcurrent protection, conductor and cable type, run length, installation conditions, and locally adopted electrical code.

What is the difference between 12 AWG and 14 AWG?

AWG means American Wire Gauge, a sizing system in which a lower number indicates a larger conductor. Southwire lists nominal conductor diameters of 0.080 inches for its 12 AWG product and 0.064 inches for its 14 AWG product. In the specified Southwire cable, resistance at 25°C is 1.662 ohms per 1,000 feet for 12 AWG and 2.631 ohms per 1,000 feet for 14 AWG. Those are specifications for that cable, not universal values for every wire construction or temperature. (Southwire, “600V MC SPEC 60050,” updated January 7, 2026.)

Which gauge is typically used for 15-amp and 20-amp circuits?

For the common residential copper examples in The Home Depot’s U.S. guide, 14 AWG is paired with a 15-amp circuit and 12 AWG with a 20-amp circuit. These are practical starting points, not a complete wiring prescription. The breaker or fuse, permitted conductor size, cable construction, and installation conditions must work together under the electrical code applicable to the project. The Home Depot advises checking local code. (The Home Depot, “Wire Gauge Selection Guide for Common Residential Circuits,” September 2, 2026.)

What to check before choosing wire

  1. Identify the circuit and its overcurrent protection. Confirm the circuit’s intended load and breaker or fuse rating. Do not select wire from an ampacity number alone: Southwire cautions that its ampacity table does not account for NEC small-conductor overcurrent protection limits and points to additional code requirements.
  2. Confirm the conductor metal and cable type. The common pairings above concern copper. Do not assume an aluminum conductor or a different cable assembly can use the same selection; check the markings and listing for the exact product and the requirements for its application.
  3. Measure the one-way run and consider voltage drop. Longer runs can increase voltage drop. The Copper Development Association’s worked examples for 120 V and a 3% voltage-drop target give these one-way lengths:
Load in example 14 AWG 12 AWG
12 A, 120 V, 3% target 49 feet one-way 78 feet one-way
15 A, 120 V, 3% target 39 feet one-way 62 feet one-way

These are worked examples, not universal maximum run lengths. Actual voltage drop depends on the circuit and installation. (Copper Development Association, “Recommended Practices for Copper Building Wire Installations”.)

Energeaster Solid Indoor 12/2 W/G NMB Cable 50ft, Electrical Wire, Yellow
  • Wire Specification: Solid Indoor 12/2 NMB cable 50ft coil; Coated in Cable Jacket for easier pulling; stripping; and installation
  • Wire Application: Energeaster Type NM-B (non-metallic 90° C) Copper Building Wire is commonly applied in residential building wiring as a branch circuit for switches and outlets and indoor applications inside wall cavities and attics
  • Wire Power Rating: The voltage rating of the cable is 600 volts
  • Wire Caution: NM-B cable may be run in air voids of masonry block or tile walls where such walls are not wet or damp locations
  • Durable & Safer: 2 conductor, 12 gauge solid construction has the insulated conductors (Black and White) parallel; The ground wire is wrapped with fire-retardant paper and laid parallel between the insulated conductors; Ground wire is 12 gauge solid also; The jacket is yellow on 12 gauge NM-B wire
  1. Account for the installation environment. Ambient temperature, grouped conductors, terminations, cable type, and other site conditions can affect what is permitted. Gauge by itself cannot establish compliance.
  2. Check the locally applicable code and amendments. Requirements depend on jurisdiction and project. Confirm them with the local building department or a qualified electrician rather than assuming a particular NEC edition applies everywhere.

Can 12 AWG and 14 AWG be mixed on one circuit?

Do not assume a run is suitable for a 20-amp circuit simply because part of it is 12 AWG. The circuit’s protection must be appropriate for every conductor and connection in the circuit, and applicable code rules govern whether particular conductor sizes and configurations may be combined. A smaller conductor segment can constrain the circuit; have the complete wiring method checked against current local requirements before making changes.

What about a detached garage?

A detached garage does not have one universal wire-gauge answer. The needed conductor depends on the circuit’s load and protection, conductor metal and cable or wiring method, distance from the supply, installation conditions, and local requirements. Establish those details before sizing the conductors; a long run may make voltage drop relevant. The examples above illustrate why distance matters but do not size a specific garage circuit.

Safety and code matter as much as gauge

Cerrowire warns: “Installation of electrical wire can be hazardous, and if done improperly can result in personal injury or property damage.” Its Follow the NEC® / Power Up with the Right Wire guide recommends consulting the NEC, a local building inspector, or a qualified electrician for safe wiring practices. The guide’s voltage-drop chart is identified as a 110 V, single-phase reference with a maximum 3% voltage drop and says values may be doubled for 240 V systems; it is not a substitute for checking the rules and conditions applicable to a particular job.
