The Best Brooms for Every Type of Mess—A Real Simple-Style, Evidence-Based Guide

The best broom depends on the mess: O-Cedar is the strongest all-around indoor pick, Broombi suits hair and wet spills, OXO is the premium set, and Libman handles garages and patios.

The best broom for most indoor hard floors is the O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro Broom & Step-On Dustpan. Its angled dual-bristle head handles everyday crumbs, dust, corners, and pet hair, while the step-on dustpan lets you sweep without repeatedly bending over. For fine dust on hardwood or vinyl, choose a soft-bristled broom or microfiber dust mop instead. For wet spills and hair, the washable Broombi Original is the strongest specialty option; for garages, patios, and large outdoor areas, use the Libman FiberForce Heavy-Duty Multi-Surface Push Broom.

There is an important attribution issue behind the requested title. As of August 10, 2026, no publicly indexed Real Simple article specifically titled The Best Brooms, According to Real Simple Editors, or current Real Simple broom roundup naming winners, could be independently verified. Real Simple does describe a substantial research-and-testing process, but that is not the same as Real Simple endorsing the products below. This guide uses Real Simple’s published standards as a benchmark and relies primarily on a detailed public 2025 broom test from Bob Vila, supporting methodology from Consumer Reports, and current manufacturer specifications.

Quick answers: which broom should you buy?

Evidence-backed broom recommendations for different cleaning jobs. Prices are U.S. prices recorded in the cited research on August 10, 2026 and can change.
Best for Recommendation Type Dustpan included? Key strength Main limitation
Most indoor hard floors O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro Angled dual-bristle broom Yes Pet hair, corners, crumbs, and standing cleanup May wear faster on rough concrete or abrasive surfaces
Premium broom-and-dustpan set OXO Good Grips Large Sweep Set Soft flagged-bristle broom Yes Comfort, adjustable reach, and dustpan design Higher price; not intended as a heavy-duty outdoor broom
Pet hair, fine debris, and wet spills Broombi Original Washable silicone broom No Hair, fine particles, liquids, and easy washing Less effective with gravel and large outdoor debris
Budget general-purpose cleanup Amazon Basics Heavy-Duty Broom Stiff synthetic-bristle broom No Low cost and larger debris Less effective for fine dust and pet hair
Garages, patios, decks, and large areas Libman FiberForce Heavy-Duty Multi-Surface Push Broom Wide push broom No Large cleaning path and outdoor debris Too wide for small rooms and detailed corner work
Fine dust on smooth floors Bona Premium Multi-Surface Sweep & Clean Mop Microfiber dust mop No Quiet daily dust and hair collection Not a substitute for a broom on large crumbs or rough surfaces

If you are buying only one tool for a typical home, get the O-Cedar for indoor hard floors. If your cleaning includes a garage, patio, workshop, or sidewalk, add a dedicated push broom rather than forcing an indoor broom to do abrasive outdoor work. Homes with shedding pets may benefit from the O-Cedar plus a washable silicone broom or microfiber dust mop.

What the evidence actually shows

The strongest publicly available independent comparison located for this guide is Bob Vila’s 2025 broom test. Testers evaluated nine products over three weeks, using eight head-to-head tests involving flour, sand, hair, rice, cracker crumbs, low-pile rugs, hardwood, bathrooms, garages, decks, entryways, broken glass, spilled juice, weeds, and mulch. Products were assessed for performance, maneuverability, ergonomics, durability, and value. Its category results—not a Real Simple editorial endorsement—support the recommendations in this guide. See the complete Bob Vila broom test and product results.

Consumer Reports also tested seven brooms and four dustpans in 2025. Its publicly visible methodology says testers swept oats, cereal, rice, dusty cat litter, and human hair; considered comfort for people of different heights; and evaluated how easy each broom was to clean. The detailed ratings and final ranking are member-gated, so they cannot be independently extracted from the public article. Its method is useful corroboration that debris variety, user height, and cleanup after use matter—not evidence for a specific winner. Read the Consumer Reports broom-testing summary.

What Real Simple’s standards contribute

Real Simple says its recommendations are based on research and testing by editors and writers. Products may be tested in Real Simple laboratories or in editors’ homes, and recommendations consider value and different budgets. The publication also says products are not selected in exchange for positive reviews, although some links may earn affiliate commissions. Its broader operation includes three labs; Real Simple reported that its 2024 Best & Brightest products had undergone lab testing, home testing, or both, with nearly 50,000 hours spent evaluating products over the preceding two years and more than 5,200 products formally evaluated.

Those standards are relevant to how a broom article should be produced, but they do not establish a current Real Simple broom winner. Real Simple’s 2024 Best Products package included cleaning products such as a canister vacuum and disposable spray mop, but no broom category. Its commerce guidelines and mission explain the testing, recommendation, disclosure, and affiliate principles behind its product coverage.

The best overall indoor broom: O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro

Bob Vila named the O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro Broom & Step-On Dustpan its best overall broom. It performed especially well in single-pass cleaning, pet-hair pickup, corner access, maneuverability, and dustpan design.

  • Head width: 13.75 inches.
  • Weight: 1.68 pounds in the tested configuration.
  • Bristles: Angled dual bristles, with firmer outer bristles for corners and softer center bristles for gathering debris.
  • Dustpan: A step-on design that seals against the floor, includes hair-removal combs, and clips to the broom for storage.
  • Material note: O-Cedar says the bristles contain 80% recycled PET.

This is the most balanced choice for kitchens, hallways, entryways, bathrooms, and other indoor hard floors. The angled head reaches along baseboards, beneath cabinets, and into corners more easily than a straight head. The standing dustpan is particularly useful for anyone who dislikes bending or has limited mobility.

There are limits. Bob Vila reported that the recycled-PET bristles may wear faster on rough surfaces such as garage floors. Do not treat this as a heavy-duty concrete or outdoor broom. Also, O-Cedar claims that the broom removes more than 99% of common household dust and debris in one sweep in an independent accredited-lab test. The product page does not provide the complete protocol, sample size, flooring details, or raw results, so that figure should remain identified as an O-Cedar claim rather than a freely reproducible independent result.

Best premium broom-and-dustpan set: OXO Good Grips Large Sweep Set

The OXO Good Grips Large Sweep Set is the best choice for shoppers who are willing to pay more for comfort, reach, and a thoughtfully designed dustpan. OXO’s official page listed the set at $45.99 when checked on August 10, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Handle range: 36 inches when stored and up to 53 inches when extended.
  • Bristles: Soft-tipped, flagged bristles designed to collect fine dust, dirt, and hair.
  • Dustpan: Extra-large, with a flexible floor-conforming lip, comb teeth, and a locking-open position for emptying.
  • Ergonomics: Padded nonslip handles performed well in Bob Vila’s testing.

The OXO is a strong choice for a standing indoor cleanup set, especially when several people of different heights use the same broom. Its floor lip and locking dustpan address a common frustration: having to hold the pan open while trying to empty it. The pan’s comb teeth also help remove hair and lint from the broom.

Bob Vila did note that bristles could catch on the dustpan teeth, and the handle-locking mechanism may raise long-term durability concerns. The broom head is also narrower than some inexpensive models, so it will take more passes across a large garage or open patio. Choose it for comfort and indoor control, not for sweeping mulch or abrasive concrete.

Best for pet hair and wet spills: Broombi Original

The Broombi Original is a specialty tool rather than a conventional bristle broom. Its washable four-blade silicone edge gathers fine debris and hair and can also push liquids across smooth surfaces. The manufacturer lists a telescoping pole that adjusts from 36 to 55 inches and listed the broom at $34.99 when checked on August 10, 2026.

In Bob Vila’s testing, the Broombi worked well on fine debris, human and pet hair, wet spills, broken glass, and multiple floor surfaces. At one pound, it was the lightest product tested, and it was the only tested model that could be washed. That makes it attractive for households dealing with frequent shedding, sticky accidents, or a broom head that becomes unpleasant to clean.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The silicone edge requires a different technique from bristles: keep the blade in contact with the floor and use controlled strokes rather than flicking the tool. There is a learning curve, and it is not a universal replacement for a conventional broom. Bob Vila found it less effective on large debris such as gravel. It does not include a dustpan, so the total cost is higher if you need a complete set.

For broken glass, use a dedicated dustpan and brush or a tool specifically appropriate for the material. Wear suitable hand and foot protection, keep people and pets away from the area, and follow the instructions for your vacuum before using one; some vacuums should not be used for shards or other hazardous debris.

Best budget broom: Amazon Basics Heavy-Duty Broom

The Amazon Basics Heavy-Duty Broom is the value pick from Bob Vila’s comparison. Its 14.6-inch head and 1.87-pound weight make it a practical, low-cost general-purpose broom for crumbs, larger debris, porches, and light garage cleanup.

Its stiffer bristles have an advantage when debris is too large or heavy for a soft indoor broom. The trade-off is poorer performance with fine dust and pet hair. Stiff bristles can scatter lightweight particles instead of gathering them, and they are not the first choice for polished or finish-sensitive floors. The broom also does not include a dustpan, so compare the cost of adding a standing or floor-sealing pan before assuming it is the cheapest complete solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose this model when price and general-purpose debris matter more than hair pickup, fine-dust control, or ergonomic accessories. For a small apartment kitchen, a narrower broom-and-pan set may be easier to store and maneuver.

Best for garages, patios, and outdoor areas: Libman FiberForce push broom

The Libman FiberForce Heavy-Duty Multi-Surface Push Broom is the right category of tool for large, rougher areas. Bob Vila named it the best push broom in its comparison. Libman’s commercial specifications list 18- and 24-inch versions with 60-inch handles, 3-inch flagged fibers, polymer broom blocks, and recycled-PET fibers.

A wide push broom covers more ground with each stroke than an angled indoor broom. That makes it useful for garage floors, workshops, patios, sidewalks, decks, entryways, leaves, mulch, and general construction-adjacent cleanup where the debris is too large for a household broom. Push the head forward instead of lifting and flicking it; that reduces scattering and makes the wide head easier to control.

  • Our mission: Make your live cleaner, and make your housework easier.

Do not use a very wide push broom for detailed kitchen work or tight corners. It can also be unnecessarily aggressive on delicate flooring. Libman describes the FiberForce as suitable for all surfaces except very rough outdoor surfaces, so an especially abrasive concrete or industrial application may require a purpose-built stiff push broom. As with any broom, confirm compatibility with the floor finish before use.

Best fine-dust alternative: Bona Premium Multi-Surface Sweep & Clean Mop

The Bona Premium Multi-Surface Sweep & Clean Mop is technically a dust mop, not a traditional broom, but it belongs in this comparison because many people searching for a broom really want a quiet way to collect dust and hair from hardwood, vinyl, or other smooth floors.

Bob Vila’s tested Bona had a 16.56-inch head and weighed 2.2 pounds. Its microfiber surface is well suited to fine dust and daily maintenance, particularly when you want to avoid the scattering that can occur with stiff bristles. It is not the right tool for large crumbs, gravel, leaves, or wet spills, and it does not replace a vacuum for rugs or carpet.

For fine construction dust or other airborne particles, dry sweeping may simply redistribute the material. A properly filtered vacuum or a damp microfiber method is generally more appropriate, subject to the material’s safety requirements and the floor manufacturer’s instructions.

Choose the broom by mess, surface, and user

Your situation Look for Why
Everyday indoor floors Angled head with soft-to-medium flagged bristles Balances fine dust collection, crumbs, furniture clearance, and corner access.
Pet or human hair Dual-bristle angled broom, silicone edge, or microfiber head Hair can wrap around ordinary bristles; combs and washable surfaces simplify removal.
Fine dust on hardwood or vinyl Soft flagged bristles or microfiber Collects small particles with less scattering than stiff bristles.
Large crumbs and heavy debris Medium or stiff synthetic bristles Solid, firmer bristles move heavier material without folding over.
Garage, patio, or sidewalk Wide push broom with durable fibers Covers large areas and tolerates rougher debris better than an indoor broom.
Wet spills Washable silicone or rubber edge Can move liquid and can be rinsed more thoroughly than traditional bristles.
Broken glass Dedicated brush-and-pan set or suitable silicone tool The dustpan must capture small fragments without leaving a line behind.
Limited storage Telescoping handle or broom that clips to its dustpan Reduces the number of loose tools and the storage footprint.
Back pain or limited mobility Standing or step-on dustpan and adjustable handle The pan and handle can matter more than small differences in bristle performance.
Small kitchen or bathroom Narrow angled broom or compact hand set A full-size push broom is difficult to turn around fixtures and cabinets.

Bristle types: flagged versus unflagged

Flagged bristles have split or feathered ends. Those fine ends create more contact with smooth flooring and are generally better at collecting dust, hair, and small particles. They are a sensible choice for hardwood, tile, vinyl, and everyday indoor cleaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unflagged bristles have solid ends. They are usually firmer and better at moving larger, heavier debris across rougher surfaces. They may scatter fine dust and can be too aggressive for some interior finishes.

Many versatile indoor brooms combine bristle types. The O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro, for example, uses firmer outer bristles for edges and softer center bristles for gathering. This is one reason a dual-bristle design can outperform a uniformly stiff or uniformly soft head in ordinary rooms.

Why an angled broom is useful

An angled head places the working edge where it can reach baseboards, under cabinets, around furniture legs, and into corners without requiring the user to twist the entire handle. It is especially helpful in kitchens and bathrooms, where fixtures leave narrow gaps.

Rank #4
O-Cedar One Sweep Broom & Step-On Dustpan Set | Patented Wave Bristles Remove Over 99% of Dirt in One Pass | Lightweight & Quiet for Pet-Friendly Cleaning
  • CLEAN MORE IN ONE PASS: Patented wave bristle design lifts and traps over 99% of dust and debris with a single sweep for faster results.
  • CONTROL PET HAIR HANDS-FREE: Step-On Dustpan features built-in combs that remove 3X more hair from broom bristles—no touching required.
  • REACH EVERY CORNER EASILY: Dual-bristle head combines firm angled tips for corners and soft grey bristles for smooth surfaces.
  • SAVE YOUR BACK WHILE SWEEPING: Foot-activated dustpan seals to the floor and eliminates bending, leaving no dirt line behind.
  • TRUSTED FOR QUIET CLEANING: Lightweight build and soft bristle action make it ideal for low-noise environments and pet-friendly homes.

The trade-off is coverage. A straight, wide push broom moves more material per stroke across a garage or patio. In other words, an angled indoor broom improves precision, while a broad push broom improves area coverage. Neither shape is best for every room. Libman’s broom-buying guidance and O-Cedar’s sweeping guidance both distinguish these use cases.

Do not overlook the dustpan

A broom only completes half the job. A poorly designed dustpan can leave a ridge of dirt at the floor edge, force you to bend repeatedly, or make hair difficult to remove. When comparing sets, inspect these features:

  • Floor-sealing lip: A flexible or rubberized edge should sit flat rather than leaving a gap beneath the pan.
  • Standing height: A long handle or step-on design reduces bending.
  • Stability: The pan should stay open and flat while you sweep debris into it.
  • Comb teeth: Integrated teeth help strip hair and lint from bristles.
  • Locking mechanism: A pan that stays open is easier to empty into a waste container.
  • Storage connection: A broom that clips to the pan is less likely to become separated or lost.
  • Cleaning properties: An easy-to-rinse pan and broom head are preferable after wet or dirty cleanup.

O-Cedar’s step-on pan emphasizes standing collection and hair removal. OXO’s pan emphasizes a flexible lip, comb teeth, and locking-open emptying. Those details can justify a higher price more readily than a small difference in broom-head appearance.

Broom versus vacuum versus dust mop

A broom remains useful even in a home with a good vacuum. It is quiet, quick for crumbs, effective for large debris, convenient for a spill, and useful when vacuuming glass or another material is not recommended by the vacuum manufacturer. It also avoids dragging a machine out for a small mess.

A microfiber dust mop is usually better for very fine dust on smooth floors, especially when you want a quiet tool that does not flick particles into the air. The Bona is the relevant alternative in this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A vacuum is generally the better choice for carpet, high-pile rugs, deep debris removal, and situations in which minimizing airborne dust matters. A floor broom may snag on high-pile carpet or fail to reach debris below the surface. A sealed or appropriately filtered vacuum may also be preferable for dust-sensitive occupants, but use the filtration system and attachments specified for the material.

A wet mop is still required for sticky residue, stains, and dried-on grime. Neither an ordinary broom nor a dust mop sanitizes a floor. A washable silicone broom is easier to rinse than bristles after a wet spill, but washable does not mean disinfected.

How to clean and store a broom

Dirty bristles can redeposit hair and dust, so maintenance affects real-world performance. Martha Stewart’s broom-cleaning guidance recommends routine cleaning at least monthly, with more frequent cleaning after spills or potentially contaminated material.

  1. Remove hair and loose debris with the dustpan comb, a stiff brush, or gloved hands.
  2. Wash synthetic bristles or silicone heads with warm water and mild dish soap when the manufacturer permits it.
  3. Clean the handle and dustpan with warm, soapy water.
  4. Rinse away soap and loosened debris.
  5. Let every component dry completely before storage.
  6. Hang the broom or store it with the bristles off the floor so they do not bend permanently.
  7. Clean the tool promptly after wet spills or potentially hazardous material, following any relevant handling guidance.

Do not soak a broom head if its construction includes untreated natural wood, glued components, or a manufacturer warning against immersion. Natural-fiber brooms can be attractive and traditional, but they may be less washable and less suitable for wet messes than synthetic or silicone tools.

What a genuine editor test should measure

This guide is a researched comparison, not a newly documented Real Simple editor test. If a publication wanted to make its own defensible editorial recommendations, it should identify the testers, test location, dates, product source, and protocol. A useful comparison would include the O-Cedar, OXO, Broombi, Amazon Basics, Libman, Bona, an inexpensive broom-and-pan set, and—if traditional materials are relevant—a corn or other natural-fiber broom.

The test should cover sealed hardwood, tile, vinyl or luxury vinyl tile, low-pile rug, concrete or garage flooring, and outdoor concrete or composite decking. Test debris should include flour, sand, rice, cereal, cat litter, long human hair, pet hair, cracker crumbs, leaves or mulch, a safe liquid spill, and a controlled non-sharp substitute for broken glass when safety requires it.

Useful records include the number of passes needed for visible cleanup, debris left behind, scattering, corner and under-furniture performance, handle comfort and height, head width, weight, dustpan leakage, hair removal, cleaning time, storage footprint, bristle deformation, and price. Each product should receive the same debris quantity and defined test area, with performance scores kept separate from personal preference. Products should also be tested only within the surfaces and debris for which they are designed.

Long-term wear deserves separate attention. A broom can perform well in a three-week comparison yet later develop splayed bristles, a loose handle section, or a failing telescoping lock. Real Simple’s emphasis on home testing and broader product-evaluation process illustrates why durability should not be inferred from a short demonstration.

Common mistakes when choosing a broom

  • Buying one broom for every surface: An indoor angled broom, silicone hair tool, microfiber mop, and outdoor push broom solve different problems.
  • Choosing stiffness over fit: Stiff bristles may last on concrete but scatter fine dust and be unsuitable for delicate finishes.
  • Ignoring the dustpan: A high-performing head is frustrating if the pan leaks or requires bending.
  • Repeating manufacturer claims as test results: Claims such as removing 99% of dust should remain attributed unless the complete independent protocol is available.
  • Calling a broom scratch-free or safe for hardwood: Those claims require testing or guidance for the specific floor finish. Flooring manufacturers’ instructions take priority.
  • Assuming a washable head is hygienic: Washing makes a tool easier to clean; it does not prove disinfection.
  • Trusting an undated price: Retailer stock, product names, included accessories, and prices change. Check the seller, country, and date before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a current Real Simple editor-selected best broom?

As of August 10, 2026, a publicly indexed Real Simple broom roundup or specific winner could not be independently verified. Real Simple does publish its testing and commerce standards, but the recommendations in this guide are based mainly on Bob Vila’s public 2025 broom comparison, Consumer Reports’ publicly described methodology, and manufacturer specifications—not a Real Simple endorsement.

What is the best broom for dog or cat hair?

Choose the O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro if you want a conventional indoor broom with a dustpan, corner access, and balanced performance. Choose the washable Broombi Original if hair and occasional wet spills are the priority and you are comfortable using a silicone edge without an included dustpan.

Can I use these brooms on hardwood floors?

Soft flagged bristles or a microfiber dust mop are generally the better starting points for smooth finished floors. Do not assume any broom is scratch-proof or universally safe: check the flooring manufacturer’s instructions and avoid dragging grit across the surface.

Do I need a broom if I already own a vacuum?

Often, yes. A broom is faster and quieter for crumbs, large debris, quick spills, and some cleanup where vacuuming is inappropriate. A vacuum is usually better for carpet, deep debris, and minimizing airborne dust, while a microfiber dust mop is often better for very fine dust on smooth floors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro is the most balanced indoor recommendation supported by the public testing reviewed here, while the OXO Good Grips Large Sweep Set is the better premium choice for comfort and dustpan design. Pick the Broombi for washable hair and wet-spill cleanup, the Amazon Basics broom for inexpensive larger-debris work, the Libman FiberForce for garages and outdoor areas, and the Bona microfiber mop for fine dust on smooth floors. Most homes are better served by two purpose-built tools—a soft indoor broom and a dedicated outdoor push broom—than by one supposedly universal broom.

These are not verified Real Simple editor winners. They are practical, source-based recommendations presented according to the kind of transparent testing and product disclosure Real Simple says it expects from commerce coverage.
