Apple did not launch a new HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, or Apple smart display in 2025. Apple’s major Apple Home development was tvOS 26, a software update for existing Apple TV hardware. For buyers choosing Apple Home equipment during 2025, the sensible options remained Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, and HomePod (2nd generation).
What actually launched in 2025?
Apple’s June 9, 2025 announcement concerned tvOS 26, not a new Apple TV. The update introduced Apple’s Liquid Glass interface, a redesigned Apple TV app, improved profile handling, expanded FaceTime Live Captions, additional Aerial screensavers, permanent AirPlay speaker selection, and enhancements to Apple Music Sing.

Apple described tvOS 26 as a free software update. Some features require Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), an iPhone 11 or later, or specific regional and language support. Existing compatible Apple TV devices—not a newly launched 2025 model—received the update.

The best Apple Home devices available in 2025
| Need | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall hub and entertainment device | Apple TV 4K | Combines streaming, AirPlay, home control, and home-theater features. |
| Most affordable Apple Home entry point | HomePod mini | Provides Siri, audio, and home-hub functionality in a compact speaker. |
| Best sound | HomePod (2nd generation) | Offers larger-room audio, room sensing, stereo pairing, and home-theater integration. |
| Best complete setup | Apple TV 4K plus HomePod mini | Separates television entertainment from voice control and provides useful household coverage. |
1. Apple TV 4K: best overall Apple Home hub
Choose Apple TV 4K if you want both a streaming box and a permanent Apple Home hub. Apple documents Apple TV as a supported hub for remote access and automations, and it can form part of a home-theater system with HomePod.
It is the strongest all-round choice for a television room because it supports 4K video, streaming apps, AirPlay, gaming, FaceTime features, and Home controls from the TV. The appropriate configuration can also provide Thread networking for compatible accessories.

Best for: households that want one central device for television, streaming, smart-home control, and Apple services.

- Rich, 360-Degree Sound – Delivers deep bass and crisp high frequencies for immersive audio in any room.
- Siri Voice Assistant – Control music, smart home devices, and get information hands-free.
- Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.
- Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
- Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.
Trade-offs: it costs more than a HomePod mini, is less useful without a television, and may duplicate equipment you already own. Apple TV models do not all have identical networking or Thread capabilities, so confirm the exact generation and connectivity configuration before buying.
2. HomePod mini: best affordable hub
HomePod mini is the practical choice for a bedroom, apartment, office, hallway, or other smaller room. It provides Siri voice control, intercom, multi-room audio, and Apple Home hub functionality. Apple lists the S5 chip, stereo pairing, and Apple-device integration among its capabilities.
Best for: Apple-centric households that want a compact speaker and a relatively inexpensive route into Apple Home.

3. HomePod (2nd generation): best for music
The full-size HomePod is the better fit for music-first households and larger rooms. It provides more substantial audio than HomePod mini and supports room-sensing features, stereo pairing, and Apple TV home-theater configurations.
Best for: listeners who already use Apple Music or AirPlay and want a premium Apple speaker that can also serve as a Home hub.
Trade-offs: it costs more than HomePod mini and is less flexible in mixed-platform households. If your main requirement is automations or remote home access, a HomePod mini can provide the hub role without paying for premium audio.
Which Apple Home device should you choose?
- Choose Apple TV 4K if you need a streaming device, use AirPlay, or want Home controls in the television room.
- Choose HomePod mini if you want the smallest, simplest Apple Home hub with voice control.
- Choose HomePod if sound quality and room-filling music matter more than price.
- Choose Apple TV 4K plus HomePod mini if you want a complete setup across a TV room and another area of the home.
- Consider another ecosystem if your household mainly uses Android, Alexa, Google Home, or SmartThings.
Apple Home works best when the household already uses an iPhone, Apple Account, iCloud, AirPlay devices, and Apple services. The hardware is not automatically the best choice for a mixed-brand smart home.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Home hubs, Thread, Matter: what the labels mean
These terms describe different capabilities:
- Home hub: an Apple device that helps provide remote access, automations, and control while you are away. Apple identifies supported HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV models as home-hub options. The device must be in the home, connected to Wi-Fi, powered on, and running supported software. See Apple’s home-hub guidance.
- Thread: a low-power mesh networking technology used by compatible smart-home accessories.
- Thread border router: a device that connects a Thread network to the wider home network. It is related to, but not exactly the same as, being an Apple Home hub.
- Matter: a smart-home standard. Matter compatibility does not by itself guarantee that every accessory feature, network requirement, or setup path will work identically in Apple Home.
- Works with Apple Home: an Apple Home compatibility designation; it should not be treated as interchangeable with Matter or Thread.
Thread support varies by Apple device generation and configuration. Apple’s developer compatibility guidance identifies the relevant combinations, including HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), and certain Apple TV 4K models. Do not assume that every Apple TV provides Thread border-routing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you have waited for new Apple Home hardware?
Not if your need was immediate home control, audio, or streaming. The rumored products did not become confirmed 2025 launches, and Apple does not refresh HomePod or Apple TV hardware every year.
Waiting is reasonable only when a specific requirement matters—such as a display, newer networking hardware, improved Siri, or a feature unavailable on current products. Otherwise, buy based on the capabilities available now rather than on an unannounced chip, camera, screen, or Apple Intelligence feature.

If you already owned a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K, the sensible 2025 upgrade could simply have been installing current software and adding compatible accessories. A new device was not automatically necessary.

Buying used Apple Home hardware
Used equipment can offer good value, but check the exact model before purchasing:
- Confirm the generation and, for Apple TV, whether it is Wi-Fi-only or includes Ethernet.
- Check current software support and home-hub eligibility.
- Verify that the seller removed the device from their Apple Account.
- Inspect the power cable, remote, and speaker condition.
- Confirm whether the model has the Thread capability your accessories require.
- Consider whether newer hardware may receive features unavailable to the used model.
Apple’s compatibility documentation can change with software and Home architecture updates, so check the current support pages before buying older equipment.
Apple Home versus alternatives
Apple Home is a good fit for households already invested in Apple hardware and services. Alexa and Google Home generally offer a broader range of devices and assistants. SmartThings can suit mixed-brand setups, while Home Assistant is appealing to advanced users who prioritize local control and broad compatibility but are willing to accept more setup and maintenance.
These are ecosystem choices rather than simple rankings. The best platform is the one that supports the devices, phones, accounts, and level of technical involvement your household already uses.
Bottom line
There was no new Apple Home hardware wave in 2025. The most defensible choices available during the year were the existing Apple TV 4K for combined entertainment and home control, HomePod mini for affordable voice control and hub duties, and HomePod (2nd generation) for better music performance. Buy the model that solves a current need, and verify its exact Thread and software compatibility rather than relying on rumors.
