The right spatula depends on the job: a thin slotted turner slips under delicate food, a silicone scraper clears bowls, and an offset blade spreads frosting. The available product evidence supports several useful picks, but it does not establish a verified set of nine products tested under one method. This guide compares six candidates with clearly attributed evidence and explains how to choose the right style without presenting outside testing as our own.
How to choose a spatula
Start with the task
- Turning and lifting: A thin, angled fish turner can slide beneath delicate food. A broader, stiffer turner provides more support for heavier portions.
- Draining: Slots let grease or liquid escape when lifting oily or saucy foods. A solid blade may support food better and can be more useful for scraping.
- Mixing and scraping: A flexible silicone scraper is suited to mixing and clearing bowls or containers.
- Spreading and baking: Straight and offset blades spread frosting; an offset shape can also help lift baked goods or work inside pans.
Check pan compatibility
Bare metal can scratch nonstick cookware. For nonstick pans, choose a turner with a silicone-covered blade and follow the cookware and utensil makers’ care instructions. Stainless steel turners are better suited to stainless steel, cast iron, or carbon steel cookware when the maker advises against nonstick use.

Balance flexibility, size, and heat rating
A flexible edge can get beneath delicate food, while a rigid, broad head can support heavier food. A large head may be awkward in a crowded pan. Heat limits are product-specific manufacturer specifications, not a common rating measured on a shared basis; follow each product’s use instructions rather than comparing headline temperatures alone.

Six spatula candidates and what the evidence supports
The recommendations below cover different jobs rather than suggesting that one shape works everywhere. Food Network Kitchen describes its fish-spatula picks as tested by Joelle Battista; the other evidence comes from the named publishers or manufacturers. None of those tests should be read as testing conducted for this article.

What the published tests actually establish
Fish turners
Food Network Kitchen says Joelle Battista tested its selected fish spatulas using two fish filets and two burgers in cast iron, followed by pancakes in nonstick cookware. The team assessed maneuverability, food support, possible damage to the nonstick surface, and residue after cleaning. That method is useful for understanding the scope of its fish-turner picks, but it does not establish that every spatula style above was tested together. Food Network Kitchen
Silicone scrapers
A January 28, 2026 America’s Test Kitchen newsletter excerpt republished by Milled summarizes 14 tests, a 450-degree, 10-minute test in a cast-iron skillet, and upwards of 40 washes. It names OXO and Di Oro as co-winners. Those figures and results belong to the newsletter’s summary of ATK testing; the excerpt does not establish that either winner is identical to every similarly named product in other coverage. - Check care instructions. Cleaning method, temperature limits, and warranty terms vary by model. GreenPan’s stated warranty, for example, covers manufacturer defects and is limited lifetime; consult its current terms.
- Check current price and availability. Product listings and retailer stock change, and the cited evidence does not establish a current price comparison across these candidates.
