Blue star creeper (Isotoma fluviatilis) is a low, runner-forming perennial that makes a dense mat with small star-shaped flowers. Give it moist but well-drained soil, start with partial or dappled light, and leave room for it to spread. If a planting needs a firm boundary, deep landscape edging can help contain the runners.

Make sure you have the right plant

Check the botanical name before buying: blue star creeper is Isotoma fluviatilis, also known by the former name Laurentia fluviatilis. The common name “blue star” is also used for Isotoma axillaris, a different plant; University of Arkansas Extension distinguishes that species from the shorter blue star creeper (University of Arkansas Extension).

North Carolina State University Extension describes blue star creeper as an Australian, evergreen herbaceous perennial that spreads by runners and forms a mat. Its small, pale blue, five-petaled flowers appear from spring into summer (North Carolina State University Extension).

Choose a suitable spot

Light

Partial shade or dappled sunlight is a reliable starting point. North Carolina State University Extension lists dappled sunlight or partial shade, while the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) says the plant can grow in full sun or partial shade. In a sunnier location, account for local heat and moisture rather than assuming it will perform the same way in every garden (North Carolina State University Extension; RHS).

Soil and moisture

Aim for soil that stays moist without remaining waterlogged. RHS recommends moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. North Carolina State University Extension lists organic-rich loam, sand, and shallow rocky soils, and notes that the plant grows naturally in moist sand or mud beside creeks and streams. These descriptions point to a useful balance: do not let the planting dry out persistently, but provide drainage. Neither source sets a universal watering schedule, so adjust to rainfall, soil, and site conditions.

Room to spread

Blue star creeper is a groundcover, not an upright perennial. North Carolina State University Extension gives a typical height of about 2–3 inches and width of 14–24 inches. RHS describes a dense mat up to 10 cm tall with a spread of 0.1–0.5 m. It can suit rock gardens and gaps between paving, but allow for runners when choosing a planting location (North Carolina State University Extension; RHS).

Plant and establish it

  1. Confirm the label. Choose plants identified as Isotoma fluviatilis, not simply “blue star.”
  2. Prepare the site. Select partial or dappled light as a starting point and make sure the soil drains while retaining moisture.
  3. Plan the boundary. Decide whether runners may spread freely or whether the planting needs a defined edge beside a lawn, path, or neighboring bed.
  4. Water according to conditions. Keep the soil from becoming persistently dry while avoiding standing water; adjust watering to weather and drainage.

Manage runners and routine care

The plant spreads by runners and can spread readily. Where it should stay in a defined area, North Carolina State University Extension recommends deep landscaping edging to contain the runners. This is most useful beside a lawn, path, or planting that should remain separate; it is optional where spreading is welcome. An Ask Extension response describes the plant as potentially aggressive in some settings, while noting it is not technically labeled invasive. That response is not a universal invasive-status determination (North Carolina State University Extension; Ask Extension, July 28, 2024).

Set expectations for flowering and winter survival

Flower descriptions differ slightly by source: North Carolina State University Extension describes light blue flowers, while RHS describes white or pale blue flowers. Both place flowering in spring and summer; the wording does not establish that every plant will show the same color (North Carolina State University Extension; RHS).

For U.S. gardeners, North Carolina State University Extension lists USDA hardiness zones 6a–8b. RHS gives an H3 rating in its UK system. These are region-specific classifications and are not directly interchangeable; neither guarantees survival in every garden. In a July 28, 2024 Ask Extension response about winter dieback, factors identified as relevant included microclimate, cold snaps, snow cover, drainage, and plant stress (North Carolina State University Extension; RHS; Ask Extension).
