Short answer: For most homeowners clearing a large driveway, the EGO Power+ SNT2405 is the strongest battery two-stage choice. The Ryobi RY40870 40V HP Whisper Series is a better fit when wide coverage, four included batteries, and an integrated control layout matter most. For conventional gas power, choose the Ariens Deluxe 24; for very large properties and deep plow banks, consider the Cub Cadet 2X Max in the appropriate 26- or 30-inch configuration.
Smaller paved areas do not require a large two-stage machine. The Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB18 is the easiest to handle, while the Troy-Bilt Squall 123R and EGO Power+ 21-inch are better compact choices when you want gas or cordless power, respectively.
This ranking is an editorial synthesis of independently reported hands-on testing from Consumer Reports, Popular Mechanics, and Bob Vila, together with current manufacturer specifications. It does not mean that Bettesworth Construction staff tested all nine machines, and the products were not tested under identical conditions.

How to interpret the testing
There is no single apples-to-apples test behind this list. Consumer Reports uses water-saturated sawdust to simulate standard snowfall and plow piles, then combines performance testing with member-survey data on reliability and owner satisfaction. Popular Mechanics has reported timed wet-sawdust testing, including a November 2025 test designed to approximate dense wet snow. Bob Vila reports real-snow testing in approximately 10 inches of heavy, wet snow across driveways, sidewalks, gravel, and plow piles.
Those methods answer different questions. Wet sawdust makes it possible to compare machines in a controlled setting, owner surveys add longer-term reliability information, and real-snow testing reveals practical details such as maneuverability, chute behavior, and how a blower handles changing surfaces. The category awards below combine that evidence with the manufacturers’ current specifications rather than pretending that every number came from one laboratory.

1. Best battery two-stage for most large residential jobs: EGO Power+ SNT2405
Verdict: The EGO Power+ SNT2405 is the best all-around battery two-stage choice for a homeowner who wants substantial snow-clearing capability without storing gasoline or maintaining a small engine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Configuration: self-propelled, two-stage battery blower
- Clearing width: 24 inches
- Power system: two 56V 7.5Ah batteries
- Notable controls: 200-degree chute rotation reported by Bob Vila
- Reported capability: up to 50 feet of throw in Bob Vila’s hands-on review
Popular Mechanics selected the SNT2405 as a value-oriented two-stage option and reported that it could clear an 8-inch layer from an 18-car driveway on one charge under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. That is a useful indication of its potential scale, not a guarantee for every driveway. Dense, wet snow consumes more energy, and a long driveway with repeated plow ridges can produce a much shorter working session.
Bob Vila found the machine easy to maneuver and capable of throwing snow up to 50 feet. It could stall when overloaded too quickly, which is a practical reminder to let the auger take a manageable bite instead of driving aggressively into a dense bank at full width.
Choose it if: You have a large paved residential driveway, want self-propelled operation, and prefer battery convenience over fuel and engine maintenance.
Think twice if: Your property regularly contains deep plow-packed snow, you have no spare battery plan, or you need to clear a very large area without stopping to recharge. Battery cost and charging time belong in the purchase calculation, and a test-specific runtime report should not be treated as a universal rating.

Verdict: The Ryobi RY40870 40V HP Whisper Series kit is a strong choice for large paved driveways, particularly for people already using Ryobi’s 40V outdoor-power ecosystem.
- Machine designation: RY40807 machine in the RY40870 kit
- Clearing width: 24 inches
- Clearing depth: 21 inches listed by Ryobi
- Kit contents: four 40V 6Ah batteries and a dual-port rapid charger
- Manufacturer claims: up to 55 feet of discharge distance and up to 45 minutes of runtime
- Warranty: five-year tool warranty listed by Ryobi
Popular Mechanics named this platform its best overall electric two-stage blower. Its appeal is not only the stated capacity: the review also praised the cockpit-style controls, heated handlebar, and broad clearing performance. Self-propelled drive helps when the machine is loaded with wet snow or working on a slope.
The battery package is generous, but the charger charges only two batteries at a time. A fully depleted set may therefore require two charging rounds. Runtime is also highly dependent on snow density, temperature, depth, drive speed, and power setting. Ryobi’s up-to-45-minute figure is best used to compare the kit with other platforms, not to plan a guaranteed uninterrupted clearing session.
Choose it if: You value four included batteries, wide two-stage coverage, heated handles, and easy-to-reach controls.

Think twice if: You are not already invested in Ryobi 40V equipment and the full kit costs substantially more than a machine with fewer batteries, or if you need to recharge every battery immediately after a major storm.
3. Best heavy-duty battery two-stage: Toro Power Max e26 60V
Verdict: The Toro Power Max e26 is the battery pick for buyers who want a wide, steel-built machine with traction and heavy-duty features rather than the lightest possible cordless blower.
- Model: 39926T
- Clearing width: 26 inches
- Intake height: 20 inches
- Drive: four-wheel drive
- Construction and features: steel chassis, hand warmers, LED headlights, Quick Stick chute control, and three battery ports
Toro describes the e26 as the battery counterpart to its heavy-duty gas Power Max line, and Popular Mechanics selected it as the most durable electric snow blower in its review. The wide path and traction-focused design make it particularly appealing for deep drifts, long driveways, and users who do not want a lightweight single-stage machine pushed beyond its intended role.
The important ownership detail is that the listed e26 is sold as a bare tool. Budget separately for the compatible battery and charger, and verify exactly what the retailer’s package includes. Toro’s official product page showed dealer-contact or limited online availability during the research pass, so inventory should be checked before publication or purchase.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose it if: You want a steel, wide-path battery two-stage blower and are prepared to pay for the battery system.
Think twice if: You need a compact machine, already own batteries from another voltage platform, or expect a complete kit at the price of a bare tool.
4. Best conventional gas two-stage: Ariens Deluxe 24
Verdict: The Ariens Deluxe 24 is the conventional gas choice for homeowners who routinely face deep, wet, or packed snow and want a proven two-stage layout with substantial intake capacity.
- Clearing width: 24 inches
- Housing height: 20.9 inches
- Engine: 252cc Ariens AX
- Controls: Auto-Turn steering, electric and recoil starting, LED lighting, and a chute rotating through 200 degrees
- Drive speeds: six forward and two reverse
- Construction: cast-iron gear case
- Manufacturer claim: 62 tons per hour
- Warranty: three-year consumer product warranty on the current Ariens sales sheet
The Deluxe 24 makes the most sense when storm conditions, rather than quiet operation or easy storage, are the primary concern. A gas engine does not depend on charging a large battery bank during a storm, and the two-stage design is more appropriate for wet piles, deep accumulation, and gravel than a ground-contact single-stage paddle.
The trade-off is substantial weight and a higher maintenance burden. You will need appropriate fuel management, seasonal engine care, and protected storage. Ariens product numbering and specifications can vary by market and sales sheet, so confirm the exact model number and warranty terms for your country before buying.

Choose it if: You want gas power for recurring heavy snow and prefer not to plan clearing around battery capacity.
Think twice if: Your normal snowfall is light, your storage space is limited, or fuel handling and seasonal maintenance are deal-breakers.
5. Best heavy-duty gas option: Cub Cadet 2X Max
Verdict: The Cub Cadet 2X Max family is the heavy-duty gas option for large properties, deep drifts, and substantial plow banks. The 26-inch and 30-inch machines should not be treated as the same model.
Cub Cadet 26-inch
Popular Mechanics selected a Cub Cadet 26-inch, 243cc two-stage model as its best overall gas snow blower. The review highlighted trigger-controlled steering, which makes turning faster and easier than wrestling a heavy machine through the end of a pass.
Cub Cadet 30-inch Max
Bob Vila separately selected the Cub Cadet 2X 30-inch Max as its heavy-duty choice. That version uses a 357cc engine, power steering, 16-inch tires, and heated grips. In Bob Vila’s testing, it powered through heavy, wet snow and demanding areas that included plow piles and gravel.
The extra width and engine size can reduce the number of passes on a broad driveway, but they also increase purchase price, weight, storage requirements, and the physical space needed to maneuver. A 30-inch machine is not automatically better on every property: narrow gates, tight walks, small garages, and uneven landscaping can make a 24- or 26-inch blower more practical.
Choose it if: You regularly clear a large area, receive deep snow, or need gasoline power for dense banks.

6. Best compact gas single-stage: Troy-Bilt Squall 21-inch 123R
Verdict: The Troy-Bilt Squall 123R is the compact gas choice for moderate-size paved areas where easy handling and small storage matter more than maximum throughput.
- Type: gas single-stage
- Clearing width: 21 inches
- Notable design: rubber paddle auger that helps pull the machine forward
- Control limitation: manual chute adjustment requires stopping to change direction
Popular Mechanics selected the Squall 123R as its best single-stage gas machine. In that publication’s wet-sawdust test, it cleared the test area in 4 minutes 31 seconds. The rubber paddle auger helped the compact blower move forward, and the small footprint made it reasonably easy to maneuver.
Single-stage machines are a specific tool, not a smaller version of a two-stage blower. The auger both gathers and expels snow, so the machine is generally better on paved surfaces and in lighter accumulations. It is not the right choice for gravel, major plow piles, or routinely deep wet snow. The manual chute also means more stopping and bending than with a machine using a remote chute control.
Choose it if: You have a small or moderate paved driveway, want a gas engine, and need a blower that takes less storage space.
Think twice if: Your clearing route includes gravel, steep slopes, deep banks, or frequent heavy wet snow.
7. Best value cordless single-stage: EGO Power+ 21-inch
Verdict: The EGO Power+ 21-inch is a good value-oriented cordless single-stage blower for short driveways and sidewalks when quiet operation and low routine maintenance are more important than self-propelled movement.
- Clearing width: 21 inches
- Clearing depth: 8 inches
- Construction: steel auger
- Chute: 180-degree adjustable chute
- Manufacturer claim: up to 40 feet of throw distance
- Reported test results: 24-foot throw and 4 minutes 16 seconds to clear Popular Mechanics’ wet-sawdust test area
Popular Mechanics selected this model as its best-value single-stage electric option. It is quieter and simpler to live with than a gas blower, but it must be pushed. The review found that it could struggle in heavy, wet snow, which is consistent with the limits of a single-stage design and its 8-inch stated clearing depth.
Do not confuse the claimed 40-foot throw with the 24-foot result from the cited wet-sawdust test. Different snow conditions, chute settings, battery charge, and test methods produce different numbers. Also verify the package: some versions may require a separate battery and charger.
Choose it if: You clear a compact paved area and want a cordless machine without moving up to a heavier two-stage model.
Think twice if: You need self-propelled drive, clear gravel, or regularly deal with wet snow deeper than the machine’s practical capacity.

8. Best heavy-duty single-stage: Milwaukee M18 Fuel 21-inch
Verdict: The Milwaukee M18 Fuel 21-inch is the premium single-stage option for Milwaukee M18 owners who want a sturdier, more substantial machine for sidewalks and smaller driveways.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Construction: metal frame
- Weight: approximately 90 pounds as reported by Popular Mechanics
- Battery system: four battery ports
- Included-battery claim: up to 11 parking spaces or 500 feet of sidewalk with two 12.0Ah batteries
- Design detail: wide chute intended to reduce clogging
Popular Mechanics named it the most durable single-stage model and reported strong performance in wet-sawdust testing. Four battery ports can extend working capacity when additional compatible batteries are available, and the metal frame is more substantial than the lightweight cordless alternatives in this list.
The downside is value. This is an expensive machine for a single-stage blower, and approximately 90 pounds is heavy for a product intended to be pushed. Milwaukee’s 11-parking-space and 500-foot figures are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of coverage in deep or wet snow.
Choose it if: You already own high-capacity M18 batteries and prioritize durability over low weight.
Think twice if: You are building a battery platform from scratch, need the easiest machine to lift and store, or want two-stage performance for plow-packed snow.

Verdict: The Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB18 is the best lightweight choice for decks, steps, walkways, and compact paved driveways where easy handling matters more than clearing speed.
- Clearing width: 18 inches
- Clearing depth: 10 inches
- Weight: below 38 pounds with batteries installed, according to the reported review
- Manufacturer claims: up to 20 feet of throw and approximately 40 minutes of runtime
Popular Mechanics selected this model as its most lightweight electric snow blower. Its low weight makes it easier to carry onto a deck, lift around steps, and store in a small utility area. The compromise is the narrow 18-inch path: a large driveway requires more passes, and the machine is not a substitute for a two-stage blower in deep, wet, or plow-packed snow.
Consumer Reports’ guidance is similarly conservative about single-stage machines, generally limiting them to occasional lighter accumulations and recommending only a limited number of models in that category. That makes the Snow Joe a sensible specialist tool, not a universal storm machine.
Choose it if: You need the lightest practical option for small paved areas and easy storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Single-stage, two-stage, or three-stage?
The stage count describes how the machine moves snow.
- Single-stage: A rotating auger gathers and expels snow in one operation. These machines are compact, lighter, and easier to maneuver, but they are generally intended for lighter snow, smaller areas, and paved surfaces.
- Two-stage: The auger gathers snow and a separate impeller throws it. This design is better suited to deep or wet snow, large driveways, gravel, and plow piles. Most serious residential machines in this guide are two-stage models.
- Three-stage: A third accelerator is intended to break up dense material and increase throughput. Three-stage blowers are typically larger and more expensive. They can make sense for unusually heavy conditions, but a bigger machine is not automatically the best choice if the property has narrow access or limited storage.
For gravel, prioritize a two-stage or three-stage model. A single-stage auger operates close to the ground and can pick up and throw stones. If the route includes slopes or heavy snow, self-propelled drive reduces the effort needed to move the machine, especially near the end of a long clearing session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right snow blower for your property
Start with the surface
Paved driveway or sidewalk: A single-stage machine can be appropriate if snowfall is usually light to moderate and the area is compact. Choose two-stage if you routinely face wet accumulation, plow ridges, or a large area.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Gravel: Choose two-stage or three-stage. The adjustable skid shoes on these designs help keep the housing and auger from digging directly into the surface. Even then, clear loose stones and follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions.
Decks and steps: Weight and maneuverability are more important than maximum intake. The Snow Joe is designed around this use case; a 24- or 30-inch gas blower is likely unnecessary and difficult to handle in tight spaces.
Match the machine to snow depth and density
Width alone does not determine capability. Intake height, auger and impeller design, engine or motor output, traction, and chute control all matter. A wide single-stage machine can still be a poor choice for a deep, wet plow bank, while a self-propelled two-stage model can work through conditions that would force a compact blower to stall or require repeated passes.
Do not feed a dense bank faster than the machine can process it. The EGO SNT2405’s reported tendency to stall when overloaded is a useful practical example: controlled passes are often faster than repeatedly forcing a machine into an oversized bite.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consider width and storage together
A 30-inch blower covers more ground per pass, but it needs more room to turn, transport, and store. Measure gates, doors, shed entrances, garage space, and the narrowest part of the route. For many residential properties, 21 to 24 inches is the more flexible range; 26 to 30 inches makes more sense when the driveway is broad and the snow banks are substantial.

- 1200-Watt Brushless Motor: High-efficiency brushless motor moves up to 700 pounds of snow per minute, handling fresh snowfall and light accumulation with reduced vibration and wear
- 20-Foot Throw Distance: Adjustable 180-degree chute rotates for directional control and throws snow up to 20 feet, allowing targeted discharge placement away from cleared areas and edges
- LED Light and Steel Auger: 2-watt LED headlight supports early morning and evening clearing while rubber-tipped steel auger and scraper bar clear close to pavement without surface damage
Compare battery systems by complete ownership cost
A battery blower’s advertised runtime is affected by snow depth, density, air temperature, battery capacity, charge level, and high-power operating modes. A kit with several batteries may be convenient, but it also costs more and can require multiple charging cycles. Bare-tool pricing can look attractive until the compatible batteries and charger are added.
Before buying, verify whether the box includes batteries and a charger. The Toro Power Max e26 is a particularly important example because the listed model is sold as a bare tool. The Ryobi RY40870 kit includes four 40V 6Ah batteries, but its dual-port charger handles only two at once. If you already own a platform, use only exact manufacturer-compatible batteries and chargers; voltage families are not interchangeable merely because the packs look similar.
Decide whether gas convenience is worth the maintenance
Gas models remain attractive for long sessions and recurring heavy snow because they do not depend on recharging a large battery set during a storm. They are also heavier, louder, more difficult to store, and require fuel and seasonal engine maintenance. Battery models start more simply and avoid fuel storage, but their purchase price can rise quickly when several high-capacity batteries are needed.
Availability, package contents, and price
Snow-blower prices and inventory change quickly. Popular Mechanics reported inventory shortages in its March 2026 update, and Toro’s official e26 page showed dealer-based or limited online availability during the research pass. Treat every price as time-sensitive, verify stock immediately before publishing or ordering, and confirm the exact model and package rather than assuming that a retailer’s title covers every kit variation.
Pay particular attention to:
- whether batteries and chargers are included;
- the exact clearing width and engine displacement;
- warranty geography and whether the warranty covers the tool, battery, or both;
- delivery, assembly, and return requirements for heavy gas machines;
- replacement-part availability, including skid shoes, scraper bars, and shear pins where applicable.
Useful accessories and maintenance supplies
Accessories cannot make an undersized blower suitable for deep snow, but the right supplies can make ownership safer and less frustrating.
- Compatible batteries and chargers: Especially important for bare-tool Toro models and for buyers comparing kit and tool-only versions. Buy only exact platform-compatible components.
- Snow-blower covers and maintenance parts: A cover protects stored equipment from dust and moisture. Replacement skid shoes and scraper bars are useful wear parts for two-stage machines.
- Winter-grade oil: Toro lists 0W-30 synthetic winter oil for applicable gas equipment. Use the oil grade and change interval specified in the engine manual rather than assuming one oil suits every brand.
- Drift-breaker kits: Toro lists a drift-breaker kit for applicable Power Max models; verify model compatibility before ordering.
- Shear pins: Keep the correct replacement pins on hand where the machine uses them. Never substitute ordinary hardware for a designed shear pin.
- Clearing tool: Keep a purpose-made snow-blower clearing tool with the machine. Never put hands into the chute or auger housing, even when the machine appears to be stopped.
- Fuel stabilizer: Useful for gas-machine storage when recommended by the engine and fuel-system instructions.
Safe operating and storage habits
- Read the machine’s manual before the first storm, including the instructions for slopes, gravel, skid-shoe adjustment, and clearing blockages.
- Inspect the route and remove loose stones, branches, cords, and other objects before starting.
- Use slow, controlled passes in deep or wet snow instead of forcing the full intake into a dense bank.
- Keep people and pets away from the discharge path. Snow, ice, and gravel can travel a long distance.
- If the chute clogs, stop the machine completely and follow the manufacturer’s shutdown procedure. Remove the ignition key or battery as applicable, wait for moving parts to stop, and use a clearing tool rather than your hands.
- For battery machines, follow the battery maker’s charging, temperature, and storage instructions. For gas machines, follow the engine manual for fuel stabilization, oil changes, and seasonal storage.
- Store the blower dry and protected, using a cover only as directed by the manufacturer. Confirm that the machine is cool and safe before covering it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a single-stage snow blower on gravel?
It is generally a poor choice. Single-stage augers operate close to the ground and can pick up stones, throwing them through the discharge chute. A two-stage or three-stage machine with properly adjusted skid shoes is the safer and more suitable design for gravel.
Are battery snow blowers powerful enough for wet snow?
Some battery two-stage models are. The EGO SNT2405, Ryobi RY40870, and Toro Power Max e26 are the strongest battery choices in this guide for larger and more demanding residential jobs. However, wet snow reduces runtime and can overwhelm a machine if it is fed too quickly. Compact single-stage battery models are better reserved for lighter or shallower accumulations.
Is a 30-inch snow blower better than a 24-inch model?
Only when the property benefits from the extra width and has enough space to maneuver and store the machine. A 30-inch model can reduce passes across a broad driveway, but a 24-inch blower may be easier to turn, transport, and fit through gates or garage doors.
Which is better, gas or battery?
Choose gas when you regularly clear deep snow for long periods and are willing to handle fuel, noise, weight, and engine maintenance. Choose battery when quiet operation, push-button starting, lower routine maintenance, and no fuel storage are more valuable. Compare the complete kit cost and realistic runtime rather than the bare-tool price or an isolated advertised figure.
Were all nine snow blowers tested in the same conditions?
No. The evidence combines Consumer Reports’ standardized wet-sawdust testing and owner-survey data, Popular Mechanics’ wet-sawdust comparisons, Bob Vila’s real-snow testing, and current manufacturer specifications. The list is an editorial synthesis, not a single controlled head-to-head test of all nine models.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a single-stage snow blower on gravel?
It is generally a poor choice because the ground-contact auger can pick up and throw stones. Use a two-stage or three-stage machine with properly adjusted skid shoes.
Are battery snow blowers powerful enough for wet snow?
Battery two-stage models can handle demanding residential conditions, but wet snow reduces runtime and can cause stalls if the machine is overloaded. Compact single-stage models are better for lighter accumulations.
Is a 30-inch snow blower better than a 24-inch model?
Only if your driveway is broad enough to benefit from fewer passes and you have adequate room to maneuver and store the machine. A 24-inch model is more practical for many properties.
Which is better, gas or battery?
Gas is preferable for long, heavy-duty clearing sessions if you accept fuel and engine maintenance. Battery is more convenient and quieter, but you must account for battery capacity, charging time, and kit cost.
Were all nine snow blowers tested in the same conditions?
No. The ranking combines different testing methods from Consumer Reports, Popular Mechanics, and Bob Vila with current manufacturer specifications.

The Bottom Line
For most large residential driveways, start with the EGO Power+ SNT2405. Choose the Ryobi RY40870 for a broad battery kit and integrated controls, the Toro Power Max e26 for a heavier-duty battery build, or the Ariens Deluxe 24 for conventional gas performance. Move to the Cub Cadet 2X Max when property size and deep snow justify a larger gas machine. For smaller paved areas, the Troy-Bilt Squall 123R, EGO Power+ 21-inch, Milwaukee M18 Fuel 21-inch, and Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB18 each make sense within clearly different limits.
Before ordering, confirm the exact model, battery package, warranty region, current inventory, and replacement-part availability. Those details can matter as much as the headline clearing width.
