The 7 Best Electric Heaters The Spruce Has Tested (2026)

Short answer: The Dreo Whole Room Heater 714 is The Spruce’s best overall electric heater for portable supplemental heat in one room. It is compact, quiet, easy to move, and rated at 1,500 watts. But it is not a whole-house heating system. The right pick depends on whether you need a portable indoor heater, a quiet bedroom model, a wall-mounted infrared unit, a permanently installed baseboard heater, or an outdoor patio heater.

This roundup reports The Spruce’s current testing and rankings, updated January 21, 2026. The testing covered 66 electric heaters—43 space heaters and 23 electric fireplaces—with many models used in testers’ homes for six months or longer. Prices and availability are approximate and should be checked before publication or purchase.

Quick comparison

Pick Best for Type Listed output and coverage Approximate price shown by The Spruce
Dreo Whole Room Heater 714 Best overall portable heater Ceramic/PTC forced-air 1,500 W; 161–269 sq. ft. About $90
Dreo Quiet Space Heater Bedrooms and home offices Ceramic forced-air 1,200 W; about 200 sq. ft. About $60
Dreo Solaris 718 Space Heater Tower form and wide air distribution Oscillating forced-air tower 1,500 W; about 300 sq. ft. About $130
GiveBest portable electric space heater Low-cost personal heating Compact ceramic/convection forced-air 750 or 1,500 W; about 200 sq. ft. About $30
Heat Storm Phoenix infrared heater Wall-mounted or flexible placement Infrared quartz radiant 750 or 1,500 W; approximately 150–750 sq. ft.; up to 5,200 BTU About $130
Cadet F Series 48-inch baseboard heater Permanent room heating Hardwired electric convection 1,000 W at 240 V or 750 W in a 208 V three-phase system; about 150 sq. ft. About $68, before thermostat and installation
EnerG+ electric patio heater Close-range warmth outdoors Outdoor infrared quartz 500, 1,000, or 1,500 W; effective range about 10 feet About $284

Coverage figures are the comparison-table estimates reported by The Spruce, not guarantees. Actual comfort varies with insulation, drafts, ceiling height, air movement, outdoor temperature, and how the heater is positioned. A 1,500-watt resistance heater produces roughly 5,100 BTU per hour, but that output does not make it a whole-home heater.

What kind of electric heater do you actually need?

The seven recommendations fall into three different equipment categories. Treating them as interchangeable is the fastest way to buy the wrong product.

#1 Best Overall
DREO Space Heater, Portable Electric Heaters for Indoor Use with Thermostat
  • Powerful heat that fits everywhere: DREO space heaters for indoor combines Hyperamics 1500W advanced PTC system with a new heat funnel design to deliver heat within seconds and enhance warm air circulation for up to 200% farther reach than traditional heaters.
  • Unbreakable safety:DREO goes beyond the unexpected to deliver peace of mind with every room heater. The innovative tilt-detection sensor improves accuracy and reliability for better tip-over protection, and built with V0 flame retardant materials, overheat protection, and safety plug, all certified by ETL.
  • Ultimate temperature control: The enhanced NTC chipset brings more precision to turn your space heater with thermostat into a smart heating powerhouse, allowing you to set heat on a wider range from 41-95℉ with 1℉ increments, saving you energy while keeping you comfortable.
  • Cozy quietness: No more choosing between quiet or warmth, DREO's heater for bedroom warms quietly thanks to its brushless DC motor with frictionless performance and a winglet fan design that reduces turbulence, reducing noise to only 34dB.
  • Fits into your lifestyle: This portable heater handle makes it easier to carry and is equipped with multiple heating levels and modes to heat as you like (Power heat, ECO, Fan Only). It also features handy extras for a hassle-free experience (remote control, 12-hour timer, mute, child lock, and memory function).
  • Portable indoor space heaters: The Dreo 714, Dreo Quiet Space Heater, Dreo Solaris 718, and GiveBest are plug-in, point-of-use appliances for supplemental heat in a specific room or work area. They are useful when you want to heat an occupied zone rather than raise the temperature of an entire building.
  • Wall-mounted or freestanding infrared heat: The Heat Storm Phoenix can be installed on a wall or used with its included feet. It is particularly relevant where floor space is limited, but its mounting, clearances, and electrical requirements must be checked against the manual and local code.
  • Permanent electric baseboard heat: The Cadet F Series is a hardwired building component, not a portable appliance. It needs a suitable circuit, a separately purchased thermostat, proper clearances, and an installation method that complies with local requirements.
  • Outdoor radiant heat: The EnerG+ is intended to make people and nearby surfaces feel warmer on a covered or partially covered patio. It does not heat open outdoor air like an enclosed room heater.

For a temporary remodel room, office, bedroom, or small workshop, start with the portable category. For a finished room that needs a built-in heating solution, evaluate the Cadet as an electrical installation—not as a budget alternative to a plug-in heater. For an outdoor seating area, choose the EnerG+ only when its weather-resistance rating and placement requirements fit the space.

How The Spruce tested these heaters

The Spruce evaluated heating performance, controls and design, safety features, noise, and value. Testers used heaters regularly in their homes, recording how quickly they felt warmth and how far heat traveled. They also assessed whether controls were readable and intuitive and, where a unit oscillated, whether the movement distributed heat effectively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety evaluation included tip-over shutoff behavior and timers. Noise received specific attention because these heaters are commonly used while people sleep, work, watch television, or take calls. Value reflected the combination of favorable and unfavorable characteristics rather than price alone. Winning models were then used at home for up to six months to assess everyday performance.

The testing descriptions reference tools such as digital thermometers, infrared thermometers, and tape measures in particular evaluations, but The Spruce does not publish a standardized comparative score table for all 66 models. The temperature changes reported for individual products should therefore be understood in the conditions of those tests, not as laboratory performance guarantees.

1. Dreo Whole Room Heater 714: best overall

Best for: A portable heater for one room, work area, or personal zone where quiet operation and easy controls matter.

The Dreo Whole Room Heater 714 is the strongest general-purpose choice in this group. It is a compact ceramic/PTC forced-air heater rated at 1,500 watts, with The Spruce’s comparison table assigning it a 161-to-269-square-foot coverage range. It measures 11 by 7 by 12.4 inches and weighs 6.5 pounds, so it can be moved between rooms without taking up much floor space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its controls are unusually complete for a compact model: three fan settings, three heat levels, oscillation, front-mounted controls, a remote, a timer, and a digital display. The Spruce’s testers highlighted its attractive appearance, clear controls, quiet operation, useful remote, portability, and good heating output.

The important limitation is that the front becomes warm while the heater operates. Position it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and do not treat a warm exterior as a child- or pet-proof design. Its “whole room” name should also be read in context: it is a supplemental single-room heater, not a replacement for a central heating system.

If you prefer manufacturer-direct purchasing, compare the Dreo Whole Room Heater 714 from Dreo where that option is available, then confirm the exact model, warranty terms, and current price.

2. Dreo Quiet Space Heater: best quiet heater

Best for: Bedrooms, nurseries where appropriate supervision is maintained, home offices, and television rooms where operating noise is a priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Dreo Quiet Space Heater is a smaller 1,200-watt ceramic model with an approximately 200-square-foot comparison-table coverage estimate. It measures 6.77 by 6.77 by 14.65 inches and weighs only 4 pounds. Oscillation, a remote, a digital temperature display, a timer, tip-over protection, and overheat protection give it more control than its small footprint suggests.

The Spruce’s testers found it quiet enough for bedrooms and offices. They also liked its precise temperature setting, gentle oscillation, easy controls, compact size, and stable base. No material drawback was identified in the testing summary.

Choose this model over the 1,500-watt Dreo 714 when low operating noise and a smaller, lighter design matter more than maximum output. Its lower listed wattage and approximately 200-square-foot coverage estimate make it a better fit for a modest room or a nearby occupant than for a large, drafty open space.

3. Dreo Solaris 718: best tower heater

Best for: Rooms where a tall, narrow form and broad oscillation are more useful than the smallest possible footprint.

The Dreo Solaris 718 is a 1,500-watt forced-air tower heater with an approximately 300-square-foot comparison-table coverage estimate. It measures 7.9 by 7.9 by 29.7 inches and weighs 8 pounds. Its vertical design takes up little floor width, while 120-degree oscillation helps distribute air across a wider area.

This is the most configurable heater in the roundup. It has five heat settings, three fan-only settings, one-degree thermostat adjustments, eco mode, power heat mode, a remote, and a carrying handle that stores the remote. The Spruce’s testers described the heat as strong even on low and the sound as a quiet white-noise character.

In one reported observation, the temperature rose by 2 to 4 degrees on low and by approximately 3 to 15 degrees over 15 minutes on high, depending on conditions. Those ranges are not a standardized laboratory benchmark; they show how strongly room conditions affected the result.

The trade-offs are a short learning curve and a hot grill. Testers initially found the controls confusing, and the grill can become hot enough that extra caution is warranted around children and pets. The tower is a good choice when you want extensive settings and wide air movement, but less suitable when the heater will be placed where people may brush against it.

4. GiveBest portable electric space heater: best budget pick

Best for: Personal warmth at a desk, in a small room, or during short periods when portability and low purchase price are more important than even distribution.

The GiveBest portable electric space heater is the simplest and least expensive pick. It offers 750- or 1,500-watt operation, with an approximately 200-square-foot coverage estimate. At 6.2 by 7 by 10.2 inches and 2.9 pounds, it is easy to carry using its molded handle.

Two top-mounted dials control the heat and thermostat, and there is a fan-only mode. The Spruce’s testers found that it produced quick, direct warmth and considered the automatic tip-over shutoff effective. Its compact size, low price, and light weight are the main reasons to choose it.

It has no oscillation, and the front grill becomes hot. Testers also found that heat emerged more strongly from one side, so placement affects the result. It is better for a person sitting nearby or a small enclosed room than for evenly heating a large, open area. Keep its directional output and hot grill in mind when deciding where to place it.

5. Heat Storm Phoenix: best wall-mounted heater

Best for: Renters or homeowners who want a slim infrared heater that can be mounted to free floor space, provided the installation is allowed and appropriate.

The Heat Storm Phoenix infrared heater, model HS-1500-PHX-WIFI, is an infrared quartz heater that can be wall-mounted or used freestanding with included feet. It offers 750- or 1,500-watt operation. The Spruce lists approximately 150-to-750-square-foot coverage and a maximum output of 5,200 BTU at the high setting. The unit measures 16 by 4 by 19 inches and weighs 8.45 pounds.

Features include Wi-Fi app control, compatible voice or smart-home control, a remote, a digital display that dims at night, removable legs, and tip-over shutoff. The Spruce’s testers liked its slim modern appearance, flexible installation, smart controls, ability to maintain temperature in drafty rooms, and dimmable display.

The design has several practical compromises. The remote’s buttons are small and sometimes require multiple presses. The included feet seemed flimsy to testers, and when the unit is freestanding, heat exits from the bottom and may circulate more slowly. After a tip-over shutoff, the fan may continue running while the heater cools; that behavior is not necessarily a malfunction.

Before wall-mounting, check the current manual for mounting location, clearances, electrical requirements, and approved hardware. A wall-mounted heater is not automatically safe for every wall or circuit. If you need accessories, verify the exact model before buying Heat Storm wall-mount hardware or other installation supplies.

6. Cadet F Series 48-inch: best baseboard heater

Best for: A finished room that needs discreet, permanent electric supplemental heat and has the electrical capacity for a hardwired installation.

Rank #4
Amazon Basics Ceramic Space Heater, Portable Indoor Heating Solution, With Overheat and Tip-Over Protection, Thermostat, Non-Oscillating, 1500W, Fast Heating, 7.52"D x 6.34"W x 9.45"H, Silver
  • CUSTOMIZABLE HEATING OPTIONS: Choose from three settings to suit your needs - High (1500W), Low (900W), or Fan Only for air circulation without heat.
  • COMPACT & PORTABLE: Weighing just 3 lbs and sized at 7.5“L x 6.3”W x 9.5“H, this space heater is easy to move and perfect for your Home, Office.
  • Built-in Tip-Over Protection, Overheat Protection, and a Power Indicator Light for safe operation.
  • RAPID HEATING TECHNOLOGY: Ceramic heating provides fast and efficient heat in minutes with only 43 dB noise level, keeping you warm quickly on cold days.
  • NOT FOR HUMID ENVIRONMENTS: Please avoid using this heater in Bathrooms, Laundry Rooms, or other high-moisture areas.

The Cadet F Series 48-inch baseboard heater is fundamentally different from the portable recommendations. It is a permanently installed electric convection baseboard heater, not a plug-in product. The listed output is 1,000 watts on 240 volts or 750 watts in a 208-volt three-phase system, with an approximately 150-square-foot coverage estimate.

The unit measures 2.5 by 7 by 48 inches and weighs 9.4 pounds. It has a slim profile, pre-punched mounting holes, quiet operation, and a high-temperature safety shutoff. The series is available in lengths from 30 to 72 inches, which may make it easier to match the heater to the room and available wall space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Spruce’s testers liked its discreet design, quiet operation, and easy mounting. A thermostat is compatible but not included, so budget separately for a compatible baseboard heater thermostat. The heater must be hardwired, and its maximum output is lower than many 1,500-watt portable units.

For construction and remodeling work, this is the pick that requires the most planning. Confirm the voltage, circuit capacity, thermostat compatibility, mounting location, required clearances, and local electrical code before purchase. Depending on the existing wiring and local rules, professional electrical installation may be necessary. Do not substitute a plug-in connection or extension cord for the required hardwiring.

7. EnerG+ electric patio heater: best patio heater

Best for: Close-range comfort for people seated on a covered or partially covered patio.

The EnerG+ electric patio heater is a vertical outdoor infrared quartz unit. It offers selectable 500-, 1,000-, or 1,500-watt output and measures 51.5 by 11 by 11 inches, weighing 18.12 pounds. Its vertical design provides warmth along the body while seated, and it includes a remote and a shelf for storing that remote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The unit has an IP44 weather-resistant rating and is intended for an appropriately covered outdoor setting. IP44 should not be interpreted as permission to leave the heater exposed to driving rain or standing water. Follow the manufacturer’s outdoor-use instructions and place it under suitable cover.

The Spruce’s testers liked the direct body warmth, full-body vertical coverage while seated, and remote control. In one observation, the tester’s surface temperature rose from 65.7°F to 92.7°F on the lowest setting. The reported effective range was approximately 10 feet, so this is better for an intimate gathering than for a large patio.

There is a small specification ambiguity worth checking before purchase: the comparison information lists 500-, 1,000-, and 1,500-watt selections, while the testing discussion refers to two heating levels. Verify the controls on the current version and manual. Assembly instructions were also confusing to testers and required a Phillips screwdriver.

Safety and installation guidance

Portable indoor heaters

  • Plug directly into a wall outlet. The Spruce specifically advises against extension cords and surge protectors for electric heaters.
  • Use the safety features as safeguards, not as permission for careless placement. Tip-over shutoff, overheat protection, a thermostat, a timer, and a guarded or appropriately cool exterior are useful features, but the manual’s operating instructions still control.
  • Inspect the exact model. A warm front or hot grill changes where the heater can safely sit. The Dreo 714, Solaris 718, and GiveBest each have different heat-exposed areas noted in testing.
  • Size the heater for supplemental use. A 1,500-watt heater can make one occupied room more comfortable, but insulation, drafts, air movement, and outdoor temperature can overwhelm its capacity.

Hardwired baseboard installation

The Cadet F Series should be treated like an electrical installation. Verify the supply voltage and circuit capacity, use a compatible thermostat, follow the manufacturer’s mounting and clearance requirements, and comply with local code. If you are not qualified to perform the work, use a licensed electrician. The fact that the unit is relatively inexpensive does not make its installation a do-it-yourself plug-in project.

Outdoor patio use

Infrared patio heaters work mainly by warming people and nearby surfaces directly. They do not create the same enclosed, evenly heated volume as an indoor room. Keep the EnerG+ within its practical range, use it only in a suitable outdoor location, and do not confuse IP44 weather resistance with unrestricted exposure to rain.

Which heater should construction and remodeling readers choose?

Your situation Best starting point Why Important caution
One occupied room, temporary office, or work area Dreo Whole Room Heater 714 Portable, quiet, compact, and configurable Supplemental heat only; front becomes warm
Bedroom or quiet desk area Dreo Quiet Space Heater Low operating noise and precise temperature setting Lower 1,200-watt output is not ideal for a large drafty area
Need vertical storage and broad air movement Dreo Solaris 718 Tall profile, 120-degree oscillation, many modes Hot grill and initially confusing controls
Low-cost personal warmth GiveBest Light, inexpensive, quick direct heat No oscillation and uneven one-sided output
Limited floor space or preference for wall mounting Heat Storm Phoenix Slim infrared design with smart controls Check mounting, electrical, and clearance requirements
Permanent heat in a finished room Cadet F Series Quiet, discreet, hardwired baseboard installation Thermostat is extra; professional installation may be needed
Covered patio seating EnerG+ Direct warmth for people within about 10 feet Not a large-area outdoor heater; IP44 is not unrestricted rain protection

For an active construction site, do not assume that a portable household heater is jobsite-rated simply because it can be carried. Check the product’s current instructions, the condition of the electrical supply, the environment where it will operate, and any site-specific safety requirements. These recommendations are best understood as home, office, finished-room, and covered-patio products unless the manufacturer specifically approves another use.

Are electric heaters energy-efficient?

Terms such as ceramic, thermostat-controlled, timer-equipped, and eco mode describe design or control features; they do not mean that a resistance heater uses little electricity while it is running. A heater can reduce waste by cycling off after reaching its set temperature or by heating only an occupied zone, but its electrical consumption still depends on wattage and operating time.

That is why a portable heater makes the most sense as zone heat: warm the room or work area you are actually using instead of automatically heating a larger space. Compare the heater’s wattage with the circuit and with how long you expect it to run. Do not select a product solely because its marketing uses the phrase energy efficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 1,500-watt electric heater enough to heat a room?

It can provide useful supplemental heat in a single room, but there is no universal room-size guarantee. The Spruce lists different coverage estimates for different models, and comfort depends on insulation, drafts, ceiling height, air movement, and outdoor conditions. A 1,500-watt resistance heater produces roughly 5,100 BTU per hour, which does not make it a whole-home heating system.

Which of these electric heaters is the quietest?

The Dreo Quiet Space Heater is The Spruce’s quiet pick. Its compact ceramic design, gentle oscillation, stable base, and low operating noise make it the better choice for a bedroom or home office where sound matters.

Does the Cadet F Series baseboard heater plug into an outlet?

No. The Cadet F Series is permanently installed and hardwired. It also requires a separately purchased compatible thermostat. Confirm voltage, circuit capacity, clearances, local code, and installation requirements before buying; professional electrical work may be necessary.

Can the EnerG+ patio heater stay outside in the rain?

The heater is rated IP44 and is intended for an appropriately covered or partially covered patio, but IP44 does not mean unrestricted exposure to driving rain or standing water. Follow the current manufacturer instructions for placement and weather exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the Dreo Whole Room Heater 714 for the best all-around portable indoor option, the Dreo Quiet Space Heater when quiet operation comes first, or the Solaris 718 for tower form and wide oscillation. The GiveBest is the low-cost personal-heating choice. The Heat Storm Phoenix suits wall-mounted infrared heating, the Cadet belongs in a properly planned hardwired installation, and the EnerG+ is for close-range warmth on a suitable covered patio. None should be treated as a universal whole-home or unrestricted jobsite heating solution.
