The 7 Best Adjustable Beds, Tested by Better Homes & Gardens

BHG tested seven adjustable beds and mattresses across setup, comfort, motion, noise, controls, compatibility, and room fit. Here is what each is best at—and what to verify before buying.

The best adjustable bed for most shoppers is the Lucid L300 adjustable bed base and Mattress bundle, according to Better Homes & Gardens’ home testing. It combines head-and-foot positioning with preset and memory settings, USB charging, relatively straightforward setup, and quiet operation. But it is not automatically the right choice for every bedroom: couples may prefer a split king, budget shoppers may accept a thinner mattress, and anyone seeking different firmness levels—not a raised sleeping position—should look at the Saatva Solaire instead.

This guide covers all seven BHG selections, explains what each is best at, and separates adjustable bases from adjustable-firmness mattresses. Because the original BHG testing was published in 2022, prices, model generations, size availability, trial periods, warranties, and retailer terms should be confirmed on the live product listing before you buy.

Adjustable base or adjustable mattress: which do you need?

Most products on this list are powered adjustable bed bases. Their motors raise or lower the head, the feet, or both. They are useful for reading, watching television, getting in and out of bed, or changing your lounging position. Depending on the model, controls may include zero-gravity, anti-snore, lounge, flat, massage, memory, or under-bed-lighting settings.

The Saatva Solaire is different. It is an adjustable-firmness mattress that changes the firmness of each side—using internal air chambers—rather than raising your head and feet by itself. It can be paired with a compatible adjustable base, but buying the Solaire alone does not give you powered head-and-foot elevation.

That distinction matters when comparing prices and features. A base-and-mattress bundle gives you a complete sleep system, while a base-only listing requires a compatible mattress. A mattress advertised as “hybrid” is not automatically suitable for every adjustable base; confirm compatibility for the specific mattress and base combination.

Freshness note: The category labels and performance comments below describe BHG’s reported testing, not a new test by this site. Current specifications, prices, promotions, policies, and model names can differ from the products evaluated in 2022.

The seven best adjustable beds, according to BHG’s testing

1. Lucid L300 Adjustable Bed Base and Mattress: best overall

The Lucid L300 was BHG’s overall pick because it offered a relatively complete, accessible introduction to powered adjustment. The reported design includes a durable steel frame, preset incline positions, user-programmable memory positions, two USB charging ports, and quiet motor operation. Setup was also described as straightforward.

The important qualification is that the BHG selection was presented as a mattress-and-base combination, while Lucid also sells L300 base-only listings. If you already own a mattress, check that exact mattress against the current L300 compatibility requirements. If you are buying the bundle, verify the mattress size, thickness, and included components rather than assuming every current L300 listing matches the tested package.

The reported weakness was the mattress: its memory-foam-heavy construction may retain heat, which can be uncomfortable for warm sleepers. BHG also noted that return shipping may be charged during the trial period. Current trial, warranty, seller, and shipping terms should be checked before checkout.

Best for: A first adjustable bed, especially for shoppers who want a coordinated mattress-and-base package rather than choosing every component separately.

Commercial path: The Lucid L300 adjustable bed base is a natural comparison point for a base-only purchase, while a bundle should be identified separately so readers do not confuse the two.

2. Linenspa Hybrid Medium-Firm Mattress and Adjustable Bed Base: best budget combo

The Linenspa selection is aimed at shoppers who want both a mattress and a motorized base without moving into the price range of premium systems. BHG reported head elevation up to 58 degrees and foot elevation up to 40 degrees, easy assembly, and a remote control. A split-king configuration allows each side to be adjusted independently, assuming the correct matching components are purchased.

The trade-off is comfort and buyer protection. The reported mattress is eight inches thick and provides less support and plushness than more expensive alternatives. BHG also reported no full trial period and a limited return window. These terms are particularly important for a mattress, since a short return window gives you less time to identify pressure, heat, or partner-motion problems.

Before buying, confirm the current mattress depth, the exact base dimensions, whether the listing is a single or split configuration, and who pays return shipping. Do not rely on an old product description or assume that a newer Linenspa bundle has identical specifications.

Best for: Budget-conscious shoppers who want a complete adjustable-bed setup and can accept a simpler, thinner mattress.

Commercial path: The Linenspa adjustable bed and mattress combination fits this recommendation, provided the current listing’s return policy and compatibility details are made clear.

3. DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame: best with adjustable height

Unlike bases whose legs are essentially fixed after assembly, the DreamCloud frame was selected for adjustable leg height as well as powered head-and-foot movement. That can make it easier to get in and out of bed, help align the bed with existing furniture, and accommodate some differences in mattress thickness. It does not mean that every mattress will fit safely or comfortably; mattress compatibility remains model-specific.

  • Charging & LED Lighting: This bed frame features a USB-A and USB-C charging port on each side, making it easy to keep your devices fully powered. A soft under-bed nightlight can be switched on to help guide you in the dark without having to turn on overhead lights that may disturb your partner.
  • Adjustable Head & Foot Angles: This Queen adjustable bed base can elevate your head up to 65° and feet up to 45° for customized sleep and relaxation. Whether you're watching TV, reading, reducing snoring, or enjoying the Zero Gravity setting for enhanced circulation and pressure relief, this bed frame adapts effortlessly to your needs.

  • 4 Leg Height Options: The adjustable Queen bed frame includes three leg sections (2″, 3″, and 8″) that can be configured to create leg heights of 8″, 10″, 11″ and 13″ tall. Whether you need a lower level to get in and out of bed or want more storage space underneath, you can choose the ideal bed height for your space.
  • Easy 3-Step Setup: Setting up your electric bed frame is hassle-free without the need for tools. Simply secure the bed legs, connect the electronics, then insert the mattress retainer bar. Spend less time on assembly and more time enjoying your new adjustable bed foundation.

BHG reported five customizable preset positions, an anti-snore position, zero gravity, USB charging, under-bed lighting, and a quiet motor. The article also listed a 750-pound weight capacity, a 365-night trial, and a three-year warranty. Those commercial terms belong to the historical article and must be rechecked against the current DreamCloud policy. Capacity may also be stated differently by size or configuration, so confirm whether it refers to the combined occupants, mattress, and bedding.

The main drawbacks were a relatively long setup process and massage that testers found too weak to be a major reason to choose the frame. Treat massage as an extra feature, not the core value proposition.

Best for: People who need more control over the bed’s installed height, particularly when entry and exit or room clearance matters.

4. Sven & Son Split King Adjustable Bed Base: best for zero gravity

The Sven & Son base stood out for its zero-gravity preset, programmable memory positions, anti-snore setting, and user-friendly remote. A split king is especially useful for couples: each person can independently raise or lower their side instead of compromising on one shared position.

Split systems also introduce practical complications. You need two properly matched components, two compatible mattress halves or a suitable split-king mattress, and bedding designed for the configuration. The BHG testers found the unit difficult to move and reported that the mattress and base components did not fit together seamlessly. Plan the delivery route before ordering; a heavy base that barely clears a stairway or doorway can become a much larger problem than a disappointing feature.

Current Sven & Son bundles may include wireless remotes, memory positions, massage, USB-A and USB-C ports, under-bed lighting, and app support, but feature availability depends on the current model or bundle. Do not assume a current listing is the same generation BHG tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Couples who specifically want independent split-king positioning and a dedicated zero-gravity control.

Commercial path: The Sven & Son split king adjustable bed base is the relevant product path, but the exact bundle and feature list should be confirmed before linking.

5. Serta Motion Perfect Adjustable Base: easiest to set up

BHG described the Serta Motion Perfect as one of the simplest frames to assemble: attach the feet, connect the power cord, and complete the remaining setup. It includes under-bed lighting, anti-gravity and anti-snore presets, and vibration massage.

That does not make it flawless. Testers reported unclear instructions, weak massage performance, and disappointing white-glove setup service. White-glove delivery is often performed by a third-party provider, so the reported experience should not be treated as universal; service quality can vary by location and delivery contractor. Ask what the current service actually includes—room placement, assembly, packaging removal, and old-bed removal are not necessarily the same thing.

Best for: Shoppers prioritizing a comparatively uncomplicated physical assembly over powerful massage or premium delivery service.

6. Purple Ascent Adjustable Base: best for nursing

BHG chose the Purple Ascent for its practical positioning controls. The base allows independent head and foot movement and includes one-touch flat, zero gravity, anti-snore, and lounge presets, along with smartphone compatibility. In the BHG account, the base was tested with a Purple mattress and found convenient for feeding a baby or changing position during pregnancy.

“Best for nursing” is a use-case description, not a medical recommendation. An adjustable position may make feeding or getting comfortable more convenient, but this product should not be presented as treating pregnancy discomfort, reflux, snoring, sleep apnea, pain, or any other health condition. Anyone with a medical concern should follow advice from a qualified clinician.

The reported omissions were USB charging ports and potentially confusing warranty limitations. Purple’s base uses adjustable legs and a zero-clearance design that may fit within some existing bed frames, but measure the frame and verify the exact mattress-and-frame combination first. A zero-clearance base is not automatically compatible with every platform, headboard, footboard, or slatted structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Parents and other shoppers who value quick, repeatable changes between flat, lounge, and elevated positions—provided the current base, mattress, and frame are compatible.

Commercial path: A current Purple Ascent adjustable base listing can serve readers comparing this category, but the model generation and available features need confirmation.

7. Saatva Solaire Adjustable Mattress: best adjustable mattress

The Saatva Solaire is the outlier in this group and the clearest choice for couples who disagree about mattress firmness. In queen and larger sizes, the current product description confirms 50 precise firmness settings on both sides. Saatva also lists compatibility with foundations, platform beds, and adjustable bases, plus a 365-night home trial, in-room delivery and setup, and a lifetime warranty. Prices and promotional discounts change frequently and should not be treated as permanent.

Again, firmness adjustment is not the same as position adjustment. The Solaire can make one side softer or firmer than the other, but it does not itself raise the head and feet. If you want to read upright or elevate your legs, you need a compatible powered base as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BHG reported that the mattress is substantially heavy, that returns could involve a $99 fee during the trial, and that the mattress does not include an adjustable base. Confirm the current return policy and any exclusions, especially if you are pairing it with a separately purchased base.

Best for: Couples who need different firmness levels more than they need a built-in head-and-foot positioning system.

Commercial path: The Saatva Solaire adjustable mattress is the appropriate product comparison, with “adjustable firmness” stated prominently so it is not mistaken for an adjustable base.

What BHG tested—and what that evidence does and does not show

The accessible BHG account says experts tested 10 top-rated adjustable beds in their homes over two months. The article’s broader promotional framing says the testing effort exceeded 27,000 hours. Those figures should not be treated as interchangeable: the 27,000-hour figure is not presented here as a laboratory measurement, and the methodology for calculating it is not established by the supplied material.

The reported evaluation categories were:

  • Ease of setup: assembly, instructions, power connection, and delivery experience.
  • Comfort: how the mattress and positions felt during normal use.
  • Performance: range of motion, adjustment speed, motor noise, remote operation, massage, and presets.
  • Design and fit: mattress compatibility, bed-frame compatibility, room fit, and practical features.

Those are still sensible criteria for comparing adjustable bases. They do not prove that a current product generation performs identically, nor do they replace checking current specifications and policies.

How to choose an adjustable bed for your room

1. Decide whether you need elevation, firmness control, or both

Choose a powered base if your priority is raising the head or feet. Choose an adjustable-firmness mattress if partners need different levels of firmness. Some shoppers need both, but combining products increases cost, weight, compatibility checks, and the number of companies involved if something goes wrong.

2. Check the mattress before checking the motor

A base can move only as well as the mattress allows. Confirm that the mattress is designed to flex, that its thickness is within the base’s stated range, and that its construction will not resist bending. Coil compatibility is model-specific; the word “hybrid” alone is not enough. If you are reusing an existing mattress, locate its manufacturer compatibility guidance before ordering.

3. Measure the complete installation

Measure the room, doorway, stairway, elevator, and route to the bedroom. Then measure the base’s footprint, folded or packaged dimensions if available, installed height, leg range, and clearance beneath the bed. Account for nightstands, wall outlets, headboards, footboards, rugs, and doors that must open beside the bed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a construction-minded installation check, verify:

  • the outlet is close enough for the power cord without an extension cord across a walkway;
  • the floor is level enough for the base to sit without rocking;
  • the bed frame or platform can support the base and occupants if the base is installed inside existing furniture;
  • moving parts will not strike a wall, headboard, drawer, radiator, or nearby furniture;
  • the final height works for getting in and out of bed and for the height of adjacent tables.

4. Treat split king as a system, not just a larger size

A split king generally consists of two Twin XL sides. It lets partners choose different positions, but it can require two bases, two mattresses, specialized sheets, and careful alignment. Check whether the current package includes a synchronizing option, whether the mattresses are sold as a pair, and how the remote controls are assigned. Split California king arrangements have similar concerns and may have different availability.

5. Compare the return policy with the warranty

A trial period and a warranty solve different problems. A trial addresses whether you want to keep the product; a warranty addresses covered defects for a specified period and under specified conditions. Read for return shipping, restocking fees, pickup requirements, minimum trial periods, stains or damage exclusions, required registration, prorated coverage, and whether the warranty applies to the base, mattress, motors, remote, and electrical components separately.

Historical BHG terms included examples such as 100- and 120-night trials, a 365-night trial, 10-year, three-year, 20-year, 25-year, and lifetime warranties, and possible return fees. These figures are useful prompts for comparison, not current promises. Verify every term on the live listing.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose the Lucid L300 for the strongest all-around mattress-and-base starting point.
  • Choose the Linenspa combination when the lowest complete-system cost matters most and you accept a simpler mattress and narrower return protections.
  • Choose DreamCloud when adjustable leg height is central to the room or the user’s needs.
  • Choose Sven & Son for split-king independence and zero-gravity presets, after planning the delivery route.
  • Choose Serta Motion Perfect when straightforward assembly is more important than massage performance.
  • Choose Purple Ascent for convenient nursing and lounging positions, without treating it as medical equipment.
  • Choose Saatva Solaire when the real disagreement is firmness between partners—not head-and-foot elevation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do adjustable beds require a special mattress?

Usually, yes. The mattress must be designed to flex and must fall within the base manufacturer’s compatibility and thickness requirements. Some hybrids work, but “hybrid” does not guarantee compatibility. Check the exact mattress and base models before purchase.

Is a split king better than a regular king?

A split king is better for couples who want independent head-and-foot positions. It is more complicated, however, because it requires matched components and often specialized bedding. A regular king provides one shared position and is simpler to install.

Does the Saatva Solaire raise your head and feet?

No. The Solaire primarily changes firmness on each side. To raise the head or feet, pair it with a compatible powered adjustable base.

Can an adjustable bed help with snoring or reflux?

Some people use elevated positions for comfort, and several products include anti-snore presets. The BHG material does not establish medical treatment benefits. Do not use an adjustable bed as a substitute for professional evaluation or treatment of snoring, reflux, sleep apnea, pain, or pregnancy-related symptoms.

The Bottom Line

The Lucid L300 remains the most balanced BHG-tested choice for a complete adjustable-bed setup, but the best purchase depends on the problem you are solving. Compare base movement, mattress compatibility, room clearance, split-bed complexity, and current return and warranty terms—not just the number of presets or the promotional price. The seven products were tested in the context of a 2022 article, so verify the exact current model and package before ordering.
