The 6 Best Under-Cabinet Lighting Solutions You Can Buy Online

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best under-cabinet light depends on how you will use it. For most kitchen work surfaces, the Litever 6-Pack Under-Cabinet Light Bar Kit is the strongest general-purpose choice: it provides continuous bar lighting, substantial total output, dimming, and several mounting options without requiring a full remodel. For a permanent, high-quality installation, choose American Lighting LED Complete 2. For a no-outlet installation, choose the rechargeable EZVALO 12-inch six-pack.

There is no single best under-cabinet light for every kitchen. This guide separates the six choices by use case: plug-in bar, permanent high-CRI fixture, flexible strip, smart strip, rechargeable bar, and disposable-battery puck. Prices and availability change, so verify the exact model and current price before ordering.

Quick comparison

Product Best for Format and power Claimed output Color and CRI Control Main drawback
Litever 6-Pack Light Bar Kit Most kitchens and DIY installations Six linked bars; plug-in or reported hardwire capability About 2,000 lumens total in the tested configuration Warm-white variants; verify the selected version’s CRI Included 0–100% dimmer Variant confusion and limited installation documentation
American Lighting LED Complete 2 Permanent installations and accurate color Rigid 120V fixtures; plug-in or direct-wire capable 270 lumens for the 12-inch model; up to 955 lumens for 40 inches 3000K; 93+ CRI Dimmable with compatible CL or ELV dimmers Fixtures and accessories are bought separately
WOBANE Under-Cabinet Lighting Kit Budget coverage, rentals, shelves, and desks Four flexible strips totaling about 6.6 feet; plug-in About 1,100 lumens total for the commonly listed kit 2700K warm white; CRI not clearly published Not dimmable according to independent testing Plug-in only and adhesive-dependent
Philips Hue OmniGlow 10ft Smart-home users and color-changing light 10-foot strip; mains-powered 2,700 lumens maximum claimed by Philips Color-changing; CRI 80 Hue app, Bluetooth, Zigbee, voice platforms, and Bridge features Expensive, dry-location only, and not extendable
EZVALO 12-inch six-pack No-outlet installations and motion activation Six magnetic rechargeable bars; USB-C charging No independently verified lumen figure supplied 3000K, 4500K, or 6500K selectable Motion modes and 10–100% dimming Regular charging; runtime figures are manufacturer claims
Brilliant Evolution Wireless LED Puck Lights Small zones, pantries, and accent lighting Disposable-battery pucks; three AA batteries each 55 lumens per puck 3000K; CRI 80 Tap control, remote, dimming, and timers Too little and too uneven for most full kitchen task lighting

Output figures are not directly interchangeable. Some are total kit output, some are per fixture, and some are manufacturer maximums. Coverage depends on fixture spacing, cabinet depth, lens diffusion, mounting position, countertop color, and brightness setting.

Price snapshots in the research were approximately $139.99 for Hue OmniGlow, $40.99 for the EZVALO 12-inch six-pack, $17.98 for the Brilliant Evolution two-pack, and $52.20 for one American Lighting ALC2-12-WH fixture. Those prices were observed around August 10, 2026 and should be treated as changeable, not guaranteed.

Which type should you buy?

  • Need even light for chopping and food preparation? Choose bars or a dense, diffused strip. Start with the Litever or American Lighting system.
  • Need a clean permanent installation? Choose American Lighting LED Complete 2, with direct wiring and compatible dimming handled according to local electrical requirements.
  • Need inexpensive renter-friendly coverage? Choose WOBANE if a cord is acceptable, or EZVALO if there is no outlet.
  • Already use Philips Hue? Choose OmniGlow for app, voice, automation, and color control.
  • Need a small wireless accent light? Choose Brilliant Evolution pucks for a pantry, display shelf, glass cabinet, or limited counter section.
  • Want one broadly useful DIY kit? Choose Litever, provided the exact six-bar warm-white variant meets your layout and electrical needs.

Task lighting is not the same as accent lighting

Task lighting should illuminate a usable area evenly enough that your hands, knife, ingredients, and recipe are easy to see. Bars and continuous strips usually outperform widely spaced pucks because they spread light along the counter rather than creating separate bright pools and dark gaps. Independent testing describes bar fixtures as particularly suitable for task-oriented kitchen areas, while Lowe’s buying guide distinguishes the different patterns produced by bars, strips, and pucks.

Accent lighting is intended to add a glow to a backsplash, display cabinet, shelf, or countertop edge. Lower-output pucks, rechargeable lights, and RGB strips can work well for this purpose. They may be disappointing if used as the only light over a large food-preparation surface.

1. Best overall plug-in kit: Litever 6-Pack Under-Cabinet Light Bar Kit

Verdict: Choose Litever for a conventional kitchen installation that needs broad, useful light, flexible mounting, and a lower-complexity DIY setup than a full remodel.

The six-bar Litever kit was named the best overall in Bob Vila’s hands-on comparison, which evaluated 14 products over more than 43 hours. The tested configuration was listed at approximately 2,000 total lumens and 12 volts. It includes six linked bars, an AC adapter, adhesive and screw mounting hardware, extension wiring, and a dimmer.

Why it stands out

  • Continuous coverage: Six separate bars can be distributed across individual cabinet spans instead of concentrating light in one location.
  • Useful brightness: The tested 2,000-lumen total is within the practical range often suggested for cooking and cutting surfaces. Bob Vila gives approximately 1,000–2,500 total lumens as a general benchmark, not a code requirement.
  • Flexible mounting: Use adhesive for a low-impact installation or screws where a more secure attachment is appropriate.
  • Linkable layout: Extension wires help cross cabinet gaps, although the run should not be stretched or connected beyond the power supply’s rating.
  • Included dimming: The supplied control allows brightness adjustment from 0% to 100% according to comparison coverage.

What to verify before ordering

Litever sells multiple visually similar kits with different lengths, color temperatures, and bar or strip configurations. Do not assume that every Litever listing has the tested six-bar arrangement or the same lumen figure. Select the exact warm-white six-bar kit, confirm the contents, and check the power-supply information on that listing.

The kit is described as usable with an AC adapter or hardwiring, but hardwire-capable does not mean beginner-safe. A permanent connection may require a junction box, grounding, an appropriate hardwire accessory, and compliance with local electrical rules. A licensed electrician is the safer choice when existing wiring must be altered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drawbacks

  • The included dimmer may be awkward to position in the run.
  • Its included dimmer is not proof that the fixtures will work with an existing wall dimmer.
  • The instruction manual was described as sparse in independent testing.
  • The product is less architecturally polished than a professional fixture system.

Best use: A typical homeowner or DIY retrofit that wants bright, linked bar lighting without buying every component separately.

Not ideal for: A cord-free installation, app control, or a high-CRI remodel where fixture finish and color accuracy are the highest priorities.

Check the Litever product and variant details. Product claims above are tied to the tested or identified six-bar configuration, not every Litever product.

2. Best permanent and high-CRI system: American Lighting LED Complete 2

Verdict: Choose LED Complete 2 for a finished kitchen, especially when accurate countertop and food colors, low glare, and compatible wall dimming matter more than the lowest purchase price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

American Lighting’s LED Complete 2 series is a professional-style alternative to generic marketplace kits. Fixtures are available in 8-, 12-, 18-, 24-, 32-, and 40-inch lengths. The system uses 120V AC, has a diffused lens, can be linked up to 400 watts, and supports plug-in or direct-wire installation.

Key specifications

  • Color: Fixed 3000K warm-neutral light.
  • Color rendering: Manufacturer-rated 93+ CRI.
  • Example fixture: The ALC2-12-WH is listed at 270 lumens, 4 watts, 3000K, and 93+ CRI.
  • Range: The 40-inch version is listed at up to 955 lumens.
  • Optics: A diffused lens is designed to reduce visible LED dotting.
  • Dimming: Compatible CL and ELV dimmers are required; do not assume compatibility with an existing wall dimmer.
  • Life and listing: The manufacturer lists a 35,000-hour rated life, cETLus listing, and ENERGY STAR certification.
  • Location: Indoor dry location.

Installation implications

This is a component system rather than a single bargain kit. Depending on the layout, you may need a power cord, linking cable, hardwire box, or other accessory. Measure each cabinet span and build a parts list before ordering. The fixtures can be plugged in for a retrofit or direct-wired for a cleaner remodel, but direct wiring should follow local code and may require an electrician.

For dimming, ENERGY STAR advises checking fixture and dimmer compatibility. An LED fixture can flicker, fail to dim smoothly, or behave unpredictably when paired with an incompatible control.

Drawbacks

  • Buying individual fixtures and accessories costs more than a basic strip kit.
  • 3000K is fixed; you cannot change it to 2700K or 4000K.
  • The system is better for a planned remodel than for a temporary rental.
  • Direct-wire capability does not remove the need for proper electrical installation.

Best use: A permanent kitchen where color quality and a clean, diffused appearance justify a more deliberate installation.

Check current retailer availability for the ALC2-12-WH. The linked retailer price is a historical snapshot and may change.

3. Best budget strip: WOBANE Under-Cabinet Lighting Kit

Verdict: Choose WOBANE when the priority is inexpensive, flexible countertop or shelf coverage and you can accept plug-in power and no dimming.

The commonly listed WOBANE kit contains four flexible strips totaling approximately 6.6 feet, a 12V AC adapter, connectors, and extension components. The listing gives approximately 1,100 lumens and 2700K warm-white light. Bob Vila’s independent testing called it a best-value option and found it thin, bright for its price, easy to install, and useful around cabinet joints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where it works well

  • Longer uninterrupted runs where a flexible strip is easier to route than rigid bars.
  • Rental kitchens where drilling is undesirable.
  • Shelves, desks, monitors, bookcases, and display cabinets.
  • Cabinets with corners or small gaps that would be difficult to span with rigid fixtures.

The strip is approximately 2700K, so it will look noticeably warm and yellow beside 4000K or daylight-white ceiling fixtures. Matching the color temperature of nearby lighting usually produces a more intentional result.

Drawbacks

  • Independent testing found the tested system was not dimmable.
  • The tested configuration is plug-in only.
  • Flexible strips can be less durable and less visually finished than enclosed bars.
  • Adhesive may fail on greasy, dusty, textured, porous, or warm cabinet surfaces.
  • Listings vary between approximately 1,100 and 1,200 lumens. Attribute the figure to the exact variant rather than treating those listings as interchangeable.
  • CRI is not clearly published for the commonly listed kit.

Better installation method

  1. Clean the mounting surface with a surface-safe cleaner and let it dry completely.
  2. Lay out the entire strip and connector path before removing the adhesive backing.
  3. Position the strip near the front of the cabinet, but far enough back that the LEDs are not in direct view.
  4. Test every section and connector before permanently pressing the strip into place.
  5. Add clips or another mechanical support where adhesive is likely to be stressed.

Best use: A low-cost renter retrofit, shelf installation, or flexible run where dimming is not essential.

Not ideal for: A permanent wall-switched installation, premium color rendering, or anyone who wants a polished diffused bar appearance.

4. Best smart lighting: Philips Hue OmniGlow 10ft

Verdict: Choose OmniGlow if you already use Hue or want app, voice, automation, and color-changing control more than you want the lowest price or the highest CRI.

The current U.S. Hue strip lineup makes Philips Hue OmniGlow 10ft a more current recommendation than automatically repeating older Lightstrip Plus roundups. Philips lists the strip at 2,700 lumens maximum, with direct and indirect lighting, a cuttable silicone sleeve, and a smooth appearance without visible LED spotting.

Key specifications and compatibility

  • 10-foot strip.
  • 2,700 lumens maximum claimed by Philips.
  • Dimmable and color-changing.
  • Cuttable at the manufacturer’s marked points.
  • Not extendable according to the current U.S. product specifications.
  • 100–130V mains power.
  • Bluetooth and Zigbee communication.
  • CRI 80.
  • Indoor dry-location rating.
  • Two-year warranty.
  • Compatibility with Hue, Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, Matter, Samsung SmartThings, and other platforms listed by Philips.

Bluetooth can handle basic nearby control, but a Hue Bridge is needed for the broader feature set, including many automations, remote access, and larger installations. Philips support documentation describes Bluetooth control as limited to up to 10 lights, while a Bridge supports up to 50 Hue lights and more advanced functions. Confirm the current limits and platform compatibility before purchase.

Planning cautions

Measure the cabinet run carefully. OmniGlow is cuttable but not extendable, so cutting too short cannot be corrected with an extension segment. Cut only at the marked points and plan how the power lead will reach the outlet. If the strip is switched off at the wall, the app cannot turn it back on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drawbacks

  • It costs considerably more than conventional plug-in kits.
  • The current 10-foot U.S. model is not extendable.
  • It is dry-location rated, not a waterproof product for splash-prone installation.
  • CRI 80 is acceptable general-purpose color rendering but below the 93+ rating of American Lighting LED Complete 2.
  • A Bridge adds cost if you want automation or remote control.

Best use: A Hue household, smart kitchen, backsplash accent, or smooth strip installation with app and voice control.

One full charge can last up to 7-45 days on Motion Sensor Mode(depends on how often you use) and 8 hours on Always-on Mode at 100% brightness. Note that the USB wall adapter is not included
  • Easy Installation & Wide Usage: With built-in strong magnets, these closet lights are easy to install, no need for an electrician. It can be adsorbed directly on ironwork surfaces. Or use the included adhesive metal plates to stick on anywhere you want. That also means it’s easy to take off and put back on when it needs a charge. Great under counter lights for kitchen, clooset, cupboard, pantry, basement, stairs, hallway, bookshelf, etc

Not ideal for: A budget remodel, multiple cabinet gaps requiring extendable segments, or a buyer prioritizing high CRI over smart features.

See the current Hue smart-strip range and verify that OmniGlow fits the intended layout.

5. Best rechargeable bar: EZVALO 12-inch Under-Cabinet Lighting, 6-pack

Verdict: Choose EZVALO when there is no convenient outlet and you want removable magnetic bars with motion activation, selectable white tones, and rechargeable batteries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The relevant version is the 12-inch model with a listed 2500mAh battery. EZVALO lists six bars, a battery indicator, USB-C charging, magnetic mounting, three white temperatures, and stepless dimming. Its modes include day, night, always-on, and always-off settings.

Key specifications

  • Six 12-inch rechargeable bars.
  • 2500mAh battery listed for the 12-inch version.
  • 3000K, 4500K, and 6500K selectable color temperatures.
  • 10–100% stepless dimming.
  • Motion activation with a manufacturer-claimed 120-degree, 10-foot detection range.
  • Battery-level indicator.
  • Magnetic mounting, with adhesive metal plates for nonmetal cabinet surfaces.
  • USB-C charging cable included.
  • Manufacturer claims up to 10 hours in always-on mode or 15–45 days in automatic mode, depending on use.

The runtime figures are manufacturer claims, not independently verified results in this comparison. Actual runtime changes with brightness, motion frequency, sensor mode, battery age, temperature, and how low the light is allowed to run before recharging. Full-brightness task lighting will require charging much more frequently than occasional motion activation.

How to use it successfully

  1. Charge every bar before mounting.
  2. Attach the metal plates so each bar can be removed for charging without repeatedly pulling adhesive from the cabinet.
  3. Use night mode for pantry or nighttime navigation lighting.
  4. Use always-on or manual operation for steady food preparation; motion mode may switch off or trigger unexpectedly while you work.
  5. Choose the color temperature after installing or temporarily positioning the bars. 3000K is usually the safest residential-kitchen starting point; 4500K or 6500K may look mismatched beside warm fixtures.
  6. Watch the battery indicator and establish a charging routine.

Drawbacks

  • There is no independently verified lumen figure for the exact model in this dossier.
  • Six units mean six batteries to monitor and recharge.
  • Rechargeable lithium batteries eventually lose capacity.
  • EZVALO sells similar-looking variants with different lengths, capacities, and features. Confirm that the listing is specifically the 12-inch/2500mAh version.

Best use: A rental, pantry, closet, stair, or cabinet run with no outlet.

Not ideal for: Maintenance-free permanent kitchen lighting or a large countertop that must remain brightly lit for hours every day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the current EZVALO variant and price.

6. Best disposable-battery puck: Brilliant Evolution Wireless LED Puck Lights

Verdict: Choose Brilliant Evolution pucks for a small, wireless accent or pantry installation—not as the primary task lighting over a full kitchen counter.

The Home Depot listing identifies each puck as producing 55 lumens at 3000K with CRI 80. Each light uses three AA batteries and includes tap activation, remote control, dimming, and 15-, 30-, 60-, and 120-minute timers. The remote is listed with a range of up to 15 feet and can control up to 12 compatible lights.

Why they are useful

  • No outlet, wiring, transformer, or app is required.
  • Adhesive or screw mounting allows flexible placement.
  • Tap control is simple for a single cabinet.
  • The remote and timer are convenient for display shelves, pantries, and occasional-use areas.
  • They are inexpensive compared with a wired fixture system.

Six pucks would provide roughly 330 claimed lumens combined, and their spacing produces separate pools of light rather than a continuous wash. That is far below the output of the bar and strip systems in this guide. The correct description is accent or localized lighting, not full-kitchen task lighting.

Battery and placement considerations

A six-light installation would use 18 AA batteries. The listing’s more-than-100-hour runtime is a manufacturer or retailer claim and varies with brightness, timer use, battery quality, and activation frequency. A timer can reduce waste, but frequently used lights will still have an ongoing battery cost and environmental impact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mount pucks so their lenses are not directly visible from normal seating positions. Because a puck creates a concentrated pool, spacing matters: too few fixtures leave dark areas, while too many make the scalloped pattern more noticeable. Keep the lights indoors and away from sink splash, steam, and direct water exposure.

Best use: A pantry, glass-front cabinet, display shelf, rental, or small counter section.

How much light do you need?

Compare brightness in lumens, not watts. ENERGY STAR explains that lumens measure brightness while watts measure energy use. A more efficient LED can produce more light with fewer watts.

For a practical kitchen benchmark, Bob Vila gives approximately 1,000–2,500 total lumens for surfaces used for cooking or cutting. Treat that as an editorial starting point, not a universal code requirement or a guarantee of even illumination.

Always ask what a lumen number represents:

  • Total system output: The approximate 2,000 lumens cited for the tested Litever six-bar configuration.
  • Total strip output: The approximately 1,100 lumens commonly listed for the WOBANE kit.
  • Per-fixture output: The 55 lumens listed for each Brilliant Evolution puck.
  • Maximum output: Hue’s 2,700-lumen figure is a manufacturer maximum, not a promise of uniform countertop illuminance.
  • Unpublished output: EZVALO’s exact rechargeable model should not be assigned a lumen figure without model-specific documentation.

Distribution can matter as much as the number. A diffused bar placed near the front of a cabinet can make a work surface feel more evenly lit than a higher-output strip mounted deep at the back or a group of widely spaced pucks. Dark counters absorb more light, while glossy counters can reflect exposed LED points into your eyes.

Color temperature: 2700K, 3000K, or cooler?

Kelvin describes the appearance of white light, not its quality or brightness:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Color temperature Appearance Typical use
2700K Warm and yellowish Ambient light, traditional kitchens, shelves, and living areas
3000K Warm-neutral Good general starting point for many residential kitchens
3500K–4000K More neutral Task-oriented spaces or kitchens with matching neutral-white fixtures
5000K–6500K Cool or daylight-like Specific work or utility preferences; can appear harsh in a warm kitchen

ENERGY STAR and the U.S. Department of Energy describe lower Kelvin values as warmer and higher values as cooler or bluer. Match under-cabinet lighting to nearby ceiling, pendant, and task fixtures when possible. A 2700K strip beneath cabinets can look noticeably yellow beside 5000K ceiling lights even when both fixtures are operating normally.

CRI: an important kitchen specification

Color rendering index, or CRI, describes how accurately a light source shows colors. The DOE identifies CRI 80 as a general interior minimum and CRI 90 or higher as excellent color fidelity, while noting that CRI alone does not fully describe saturated-red rendering.

  • Prefer CRI 90+: Especially useful where food, finishes, paint, stone, and cabinetry need to look accurate.
  • CRI 80 is acceptable: It is common in affordable and smart products, but it is not a premium color-rendering specification.
  • Do not confuse CRI with brightness: High CRI does not automatically mean more lumens, better diffusion, or less glare.
  • Be cautious when CRI is missing: Many inexpensive online products do not publish it.

In this group, American Lighting’s 93+ CRI is a significant advantage for a permanent kitchen installation. Philips Hue OmniGlow and Brilliant Evolution are listed at CRI 80. The absence of a published CRI for WOBANE or EZVALO should be treated as missing information, not as proof of poor color quality.

Bar versus strip versus puck

Light bars

Rigid bars provide a finished appearance, predictable mounting, and broad linear coverage. They are usually the easiest format to align under a cabinet and are a strong choice for task lighting. They require accurate measurement and may need linking cables to cross cabinet gaps. Litever and American Lighting represent the two ends of this category: a bundled DIY kit and a more component-based permanent system.

Flexible strips

Strips are thin and easy to route around corners, cabinet joints, and irregular layouts. They are useful where rigid fixtures cannot fit, but they can show individual LED dots unless enclosed in a diffuser or aluminum channel. Adhesive-backed strips also need a clean, dry, suitable surface. WOBANE favors affordability; Hue OmniGlow favors smart control and a smoother appearance.

Puck lights

Pucks create focused pools of light. They work for glass cabinets, shelves, pantries, and small zones, but they can produce uneven scalloping across a long countertop. Brilliant Evolution is best understood as a convenient accent-lighting solution.

Plug-in, rechargeable, disposable battery, or hardwired?

Power method Best for Trade-off
Plug-in Renters, retrofits, and DIY installations A visible cord must be routed or concealed; the outlet must be accessible
Rechargeable No-outlet locations where fixtures can be removed Charging interruptions, battery aging, and multiple units to maintain
Disposable battery Small or infrequently used areas Recurring battery purchases, waste, and lower output in many puck products
Hardwired Permanent remodels and wall-switch control May require an electrician, junction box, grounding, compatible dimmer, and code-compliant wiring

Lowe’s installation guidance describes plug-in and battery products as generally DIY-friendly and recommends professional installation for hardwired under-cabinet lighting. Treat that as a safety boundary: do not convert a simple plug-in project into an electrical project without the required knowledge and equipment.

Best Value
EZVALO Under Cabinet Lighting with Charging Station, Motion Sensor Lights
  • A Complete Lighting Upgrade: Everything you need to brighten multiple areas in your kitchen or cabinets—6 rechargeable under cabinet lights, a remote, a 3-port charging dock, and magnetic mounting accessories. No drilling, no wiring, no electrician needed. Just easy installation, convenient control, and simpler charging in one complete kit.
  • Motion Sensor or Always-On—Choose What Works: The 120° motion sensor detects movement up to 10 ft and turns the light off after 20 seconds of no motion. Choose Night Motion Mode for dark or low-light conditions, All-Day Motion Mode when you want motion activation regardless of surrounding light, or Always-On Mode when you want the light to stay on continuously.
  • Charge 3 Lights at a Time, Not One by One: The USB-C charging station charges up to 3 lights together, so you need fewer charging cables and fewer outlets. Each light has a built-in 2000mAh rechargeable battery for approximately 13–40 days in Auto Mode or up to 11 hours in Always-On Mode.
  • Cordless, Magnetic & Easy to Install: No hardwiring or electrician required. Attach the lights directly to suitable metal surfaces or use the included adhesive mounting plates, then simply remove the magnetic light body whenever it is time to recharge. Great for kitchen cabinets, closets, pantries, shelves, and other small spaces where more light is needed.
  • 3 Color Temperatures for Different Tasks: Choose Warm White 3000K for warmer, more comfortable light, Natural White 4500K for everyday tasks, or Cool White 6500K for brighter, crisper light when prepping, cleaning, or organizing. Stepless dimming lets you adjust the brightness to the exact level you want.

Placement, diffusion, and glare

Mounting position can determine whether a light feels comfortable or harsh. Lowe’s recommends placing the fixture toward the front of the cabinet, just behind the face frame, and directing light toward the backsplash to reduce glare. In practice:

  • Hide the fixture behind the cabinet face where possible.
  • Use a frosted or diffused lens when LEDs are visible from normal standing or seated positions.
  • Use an aluminum channel with a diffuser for a more finished flexible-strip installation.
  • Avoid placing exposed LED dots directly in the sightline of people sitting at an island or table.
  • Expect glossy counters to reflect individual LEDs.
  • Expect dark counters and backsplashes to absorb more light.
  • Measure each cabinet span separately instead of assuming one continuous run will fit.

Installation mistakes to avoid

  1. Measuring only the total kitchen length: Cabinet breaks, appliances, corners, and gaps may require separate bars, extension wires, or carefully planned strip segments.
  2. Mounting too far back: Light may be blocked by the cabinet front and fail to reach the front of the work surface.
  3. Leaving LED points exposed: Directly visible dots create glare and reflections. Reposition the fixture or add diffusion.
  4. Trusting adhesive on a greasy surface: Clean and dry the surface first. Use clips or screws where the manufacturer permits and where the cabinet material allows.
  5. Testing after permanent installation: Lay out and power the entire system before removing backing or closing up wiring.
  6. Exceeding the power supply: Do not connect more bars or strip length than the adapter and manufacturer’s instructions support.
  7. Assuming dimmer compatibility: An included inline dimmer is not the same as compatibility with a pre-existing wall dimmer. Check the fixture, dimmer, and power-supply requirements.
  8. Hardwiring without a plan: Account for junction boxes, grounding, cable routing, access, local code, and the possibility that an electrician is required.
  9. Installing dry-rated lighting near water: Verify the location rating before using a product near a sink, in a bathroom, under a sink, or anywhere exposed to splash or steam.
  10. Forgetting battery removal: Rechargeable bars need to come off the cabinet periodically. Position their magnetic plates so removal is convenient.

Safety and location rating

Kitchen under-cabinet products are commonly intended for indoor dry or, in some cases, damp locations. They are not automatically suitable for direct water exposure. UL’s location guidance distinguishes dry, damp, and wet locations and indicates that a fixture must be marked for the location where it is installed.

Before installation, verify:

  • UL, ETL, cETLus, or another recognized safety listing.
  • Whether the exact model is rated for dry, damp, or wet location use.
  • Whether the supplied power adapter is included and listed for the fixture.
  • Whether the proposed location is exposed to sink splash, steam, condensation, or cleaning water.
  • Whether the product is indoor-only.

Do not describe any of these products as waterproof unless the exact model is explicitly marked for wet use. A kitchen backsplash location is not automatically a wet location, but a light directly exposed to water or persistent steam needs a product with the appropriate rating.

Specification conflicts and buying checks

Online listings frequently combine information from similar variants. Check the exact model number, pack size, length, color temperature, power supply, and control method before ordering. One example in the research is the Enbrighten 82920-T1 listing, whose marketing copy and specification table report different lumen and color-temperature values. That kind of conflict is a reason to verify the packaging or manual rather than repeat the larger number.

The same caution applies to Litever, WOBANE, and EZVALO, all of which have multiple similar-looking versions. Do not merge the output of one variant with the battery capacity, length, or controls of another.

Our methodology and claim boundaries

The recommendations combine independent testing, manufacturer specifications, retailer specifications, and installation judgment. Bob Vila reports hands-on testing of 14 under-cabinet products over more than 43 hours and supplies the strongest independent evidence for the Litever and WOBANE selections. Manufacturer pages supply current technical details for American Lighting, Philips Hue, and EZVALO. Retailer documentation supplies the Brilliant Evolution specifications. This Old House’s comparison includes an affiliate disclosure, so affiliate roundup rankings should not be treated as equivalent to laboratory or hands-on testing.

“Best” in each category is therefore an editorial fit judgment, not an objective ranking of every light available online. Manufacturer lumen, runtime, CRI, warranty, and life claims are identified as such. Prices and stock are snapshots and should be checked at the time of purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are puck lights bright enough for kitchen countertops?

Usually not as the only lighting over a full food-preparation surface. The Brilliant Evolution pucks in this guide are listed at 55 lumens each, so even six would provide about 330 claimed lumens and separate pools of light. Use bars or a dense diffused strip for chopping, recipe reading, and continuous countertop coverage; reserve pucks for pantries, shelves, glass cabinets, and accent lighting.

What color temperature is best for under-cabinet kitchen lighting?

3000K is a practical starting point for many residential kitchens because it is warm-neutral. Choose 2700K if you want a distinctly warm, ambient appearance, or 3500K–4000K if nearby fixtures already use a neutral white. The most important rule is to match the under-cabinet lights to the surrounding ceiling and pendant lighting.

Can I hardwire a plug-in under-cabinet lighting kit?

Only if the exact product and its accessories are designed for that installation. Litever is reported as supporting an AC-adapter or hardwire option, while American Lighting LED Complete 2 supports plug-in or direct-wire installation. Hardwiring can involve junction boxes, grounding, compatible controls, local electrical code, and an electrician; it should not be treated as a casual extension of a plug-in DIY project.

Do I need a Philips Hue Bridge for OmniGlow?

Not for every basic nearby Bluetooth function. Philips says a Bridge is needed for the broader Hue feature set, including many automations, remote access, and larger installations. If you want whole-home control or reliable out-of-home operation, include the Bridge in the budget and verify current compatibility.

How do I stop under-cabinet light adhesive from failing?

Clean and dry the mounting surface, plan the layout before removing the backing, and test the complete run first. Grease, dust, textured surfaces, porous wood, heat, and cable strain can defeat adhesive. Add clips or use screws where the product and cabinet permit. A flexible strip in an aluminum channel can also provide a more secure and finished installation.

The Bottom Line

For most homeowners who want useful countertop light without committing to a full remodel, buy the Litever six-bar kit after confirming the exact variant. Choose American Lighting LED Complete 2 for a permanent, high-CRI installation; WOBANE for low-cost flexible coverage; Philips Hue OmniGlow for smart-home control; EZVALO when there is no outlet; and Brilliant Evolution when a small wireless puck is all you need. The decisive questions are not simply how attractive the fixture looks or how many lumens the listing claims, but whether its light pattern, power source, controls, color quality, and location rating match the job.
