The Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS is the best refrigerator overall if your priorities are stable temperatures, fresh produce, quiet operation, and a strong service-and-parts outlook. Its main weakness is its 20.8-cubic-foot counter-depth capacity. For more storage, the Bosch 500 Series B36FD52SNS is the more practical family choice; the Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL is the better feature-focused option; and simpler top-freezer models from GE and Frigidaire make more sense when purchase cost or compact dimensions matter most.

There is no single best refrigerator for every kitchen. The right choice depends on the cabinet opening, household size, refrigerator style, freezer-storage needs, ice and water preferences, energy use, and local repair coverage. The six recommendations below are based on the cited RTINGS laboratory testing and Good Housekeeping review—not first-hand testing by this publication.

Quick comparison

Model Best for Main strength Main compromise
Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS Best overall performance Excellent temperature control and produce preservation Counter-depth capacity and premium positioning
Bosch 500 Series B36FD52SNS Families wanting more room Standard-depth storage, quiet operation, and strong testing results Newer design with a simpler cooling system
Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL Feature-rich mid-range shopping Auto-refilling pitcher, dual ice makers, and strong capacity Authorized service may be less convenient outside major metro areas
Whirlpool WRSF5536RZ Side-by-side layouts Eye-level freezer access and adjustable organization Narrower compartments and dispenser-related storage loss
GE GTS22KGNRWW Budget buyers Simple design, parts availability, and broad GE service coverage Basic storage flexibility and more measured noise
Frigidaire FFTR1425VW Small households and secondary kitchens Compact footprint and low purchase-cost positioning Limited capacity and weaker produce preservation

1. Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS: best refrigerator overall

The Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS is the strongest all-around performance choice in the available independent testing. It is particularly well suited to shoppers who would rather preserve food well and keep kitchen noise low than maximize cubic footage.

Why it stands out

RTINGS reports a 9.0 produce-preservation score, an 8.4 temperature-uniformity score, and an 8.3 noise score. Its testing measured 97.4% produce-moisture retention and approximately 36.6 dBA during the cooling cycle. Those results make it the performance leader among the models in this guide, particularly for households that keep fresh vegetables, fruit, and other moisture-sensitive foods for several days.

The refrigerator and freezer use separate compressors and evaporators. That arrangement isolates the two compartments, helping limit odor transfer and allowing the refrigerator and freezer to maintain different humidity and temperature conditions. It is one reason this model is a better fit for preservation-focused shoppers than a simpler single-evaporator design.

ENERGY STAR lists the B36CT80SN* family as certified, with estimated energy use of 570 kWh per year, compared with a 626 kWh-per-year federal standard comparison. The listing also identifies R-600a refrigerant, which has lower global-warming potential than many older refrigerants. Check the precise model suffix, because features and official energy figures can vary within a product family.

Trade-offs to consider

This is a 20.8-cubic-foot counter-depth refrigerator, so it sacrifices some storage for a shallower cabinet profile. That is a meaningful limitation for large families, bulk shoppers, and anyone who routinely stores wide trays or substantial leftovers. Counter-depth also does not mean perfectly flush with every countertop: handles, doors, hinge covers, and required rear clearance still affect the final projection.

Its internal water and ice arrangement may also disappoint shoppers who specifically require a through-the-door dispenser. The model is best for buyers who value quiet operation, temperature consistency, food preservation, and Bosch’s service-and-parts reputation more than maximum capacity or exterior dispensing.

Choose it if: you have a smaller or carefully measured kitchen opening, value fresh-food preservation, and can live with counter-depth storage.

2. Bosch 500 Series B36FD52SNS: best upper-mid-range refrigerator

The Bosch 500 Series B36FD52SNS is the more practical Bosch choice for families that need standard-depth capacity. It retains many of the performance characteristics that make the 800 Series appealing while offering a roomier cabinet and a lower product tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What testing found

RTINGS reports an 8.6 temperature-uniformity score, an 8.6 produce-preservation score, and an excellent 9.1 noise score. Its measured produce-moisture retention was 97.2%, and it operated at approximately 34.5 dBA during cooling in the cited testing. In other words, it gave up little in the reported temperature and produce results compared with the more expensive 800 Series, while measuring even quieter in that test.

The standard-depth cabinet is the key practical advantage. The design includes split shelves, a full-width deli drawer, deep door bins, and two freezer drawers. Those features make it easier to organize a family’s larger assortment of containers, platters, and packaged food than a smaller counter-depth model.

What you give up

The 500 Series uses a simpler single-compressor and single-evaporator system. Testing still found highly uniform temperatures, but the arrangement may provide less whole-cabinet humidity control than the 800 Series’ separated cooling systems. The difference matters most to shoppers who place a high value on long-term produce preservation and odor isolation.

The 500 Series design was introduced in 2024, so its parts history is less mature than that of the 800 Series. That does not establish that it is unreliable; it simply means there is a shorter operating history from which to judge long-term parts availability. Bosch’s service network remains a reason to consider it, but local authorized coverage should still be verified.

Choose it if: you want Bosch’s quiet, consistent performance but need standard-depth storage for a family-sized refrigerator.

3. Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL: best feature-rich mid-range refrigerator

The Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL is the best fit here for shoppers who want useful convenience features without moving to a fully premium refrigerator category. It is a 36-inch, standard-depth French-door model with strong measured performance and a generous feature set.

Features and measured performance

RTINGS reports an 8.5 temperature-uniformity score, an 8.0 produce-preservation score, an 8.6 refrigerator-capacity score, and an 8.2 ice-making score. Its tested produce-moisture retention was 92.5%, and cooling noise measured approximately 38.1 dBA.

The dual-evaporator system supports consistent temperatures and helps the refrigerator preserve high-water-content produce. For convenience, the model has an automatically refilling water pitcher and two freezer ice makers: one for conventional cubes and another for smaller nugget-style ice. Those features make it especially attractive to households that regularly use chilled water and more than one type of ice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important service and storage cautions

The main concern is not its feature list but the availability of authorized service. RTINGS characterizes Samsung’s U.S. service coverage as stronger in major metropolitan areas than in rural areas and weaker than Bosch’s network. That is a broad network observation, not a guarantee about any particular buyer’s experience. Before purchase, enter your ZIP code into the manufacturer or retailer service process and confirm who will handle warranty repairs in your area.

Also inspect the freezer-bin geometry if you regularly store large boxed items. A refrigerator can have a strong advertised capacity while still making certain bulky packages awkward to fit.

Choose it if: an auto-filling pitcher, dual ice, standard-depth capacity, and modern features matter more than the strongest service coverage.

4. Whirlpool WRSF5536RZ: best side-by-side refrigerator

The Whirlpool WRSF5536RZ is the best side-by-side option among the lab-reviewed and tested models considered here. Good Housekeeping identified it as its best side-by-side refrigerator, and its consumer testers liked the adjustable shelving, smooth-gliding drawers, and in-door ice bin.

Why choose side-by-side

A side-by-side refrigerator keeps frequently used refrigerator and freezer food at eye level. It also needs less door-swing clearance than many French-door designs, which can be valuable in a narrow kitchen, a tight renovation, or a layout where a wide door would interfere with a wall, island, or adjacent cabinet.

The WRSF5536RZ is a 36-inch standard-depth configuration measuring approximately 69 inches high by 36 inches wide by 33 inches deep. It includes water and ice dispensing and provides adjustable organization inside the doors and compartments.

The side-by-side compromise

Both compartments are vertically tall but relatively narrow. That makes it easier to see items at different heights, but harder to store wide platters, large pizza boxes, sheet pans, and broad leftovers. The through-door dispenser also consumes some freezer-door storage. If you prefer broad refrigerator shelves and wide freezer drawers, a French-door design will usually be more accommodating.

The cited review does not identify this model as ENERGY STAR certified. Buyers who place a high priority on certification should verify the current EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR listings for the exact model before ordering rather than relying on a retailer’s category description.

Choose it if: your kitchen has limited door-clearance space and you prefer eye-level access to both refrigerator and freezer contents.

5. GE GTS22KGNRWW: best budget refrigerator

The GE GTS22KGNRWW is the best budget-oriented choice for buyers who prefer a straightforward top-freezer refrigerator. It avoids the complexity and feature cost of French-door and smart refrigerators and emphasizes a conventional layout that many repair technicians and homeowners already understand.

Performance and practical strengths

RTINGS reports scores of 7.7 for everyday use, temperature uniformity, produce preservation, and capacity. Produce-moisture retention measured 93.1%, while cooling noise measured approximately 44.4 dBA. It uses a simple fixed-speed compressor and well-sealing crisper drawers, which support consistent temperatures and good produce crispness for a basic refrigerator.

Parts availability and GE’s robust service network are significant advantages for a cost-conscious appliance purchase. A lower initial price is less helpful if a replacement part is difficult to locate or an authorized service provider is unavailable, so the GE’s repairability outlook strengthens its budget case.

Limitations

The refrigerator lacks the flexible split shelving found on more expensive models. Tall bottles and unusual containers may be harder to place, and the interior is less adaptable when a shopping trip includes a mixture of large and small items. The measured noise is also higher than the Bosch recommendations in the cited testing.

Choose it if: you want a conventional, serviceable refrigerator at a lower product tier and do not need smart features or an external dispenser.

6. Frigidaire FFTR1425VW: best cheap refrigerator for small households

The Frigidaire FFTR1425VW is the compact, low-cost choice for one or two people, an apartment, an office, a secondary kitchen, or any space where a 28-inch top-freezer refrigerator is more appropriate than a full-size model.

What it does well

RTINGS reports an 8.4 temperature-uniformity score, a 7.4 ice-making score, a 7.6 parts-availability score, and a 7.4 noise score. It measured 89.5% produce-moisture retention and approximately 39.5 dBA during cooling. Its small footprint and straightforward layout are its most important advantages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should avoid it

Usable capacity is the central limitation. This is not a good choice for a large household, frequent meal preparation, bulk shopping, or anyone who stores substantial leftovers. Its produce-preservation performance also trails the larger Bosch recommendations. Before buying, consider not only whether it fits the opening but whether it can hold a normal week’s groceries without becoming difficult to organize.

Choose it if: low purchase cost and compact dimensions matter more than capacity, premium features, or the strongest produce-preservation results.

How the refrigerator styles differ

French-door refrigerators

French-door models place the refrigerator compartment at eye level and usually provide broad shelves for platters, meal-prep containers, and leftovers. They are a strong default for families, but their doors and lower freezer drawers need adequate clearance. Measure both the swing of each door and the distance required to pull out the freezer drawers.

The Bosch 800, Bosch 500, and Samsung recommendations use this general layout. Their differences are capacity, cooling design, feature set, price tier, and service considerations—not simply appearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Side-by-side refrigerators

Side-by-side models divide the cabinet vertically. That makes both fresh and frozen food easy to reach without bending as often, and the doors generally require less swing clearance. The cost is narrower storage on each side. They are less convenient for wide trays and large frozen packages, particularly when an in-door dispenser takes up additional space.

Top-freezer refrigerators

Top-freezer models are usually the simplest and least expensive configuration. ENERGY STAR identifies them as typically the least energy-intensive refrigerator style. They are a sensible choice when operating cost, simplicity, and purchase price matter more than eye-level fresh-food access or wide refrigerator shelves.

The GE GTS22KGNRWW is the better full-size budget choice in this group. The Frigidaire FFTR1425VW is the better compact choice.

How to choose the right refrigerator before ordering

1. Measure the actual opening and delivery route

Measure the cabinet opening—not just the old refrigerator. Record the opening’s width, height, and depth, then check nearby walls, cabinet overhangs, baseboards, flooring transitions, and the path through every doorway and hallway.

  • Measure at more than one point, since walls and cabinets may not be perfectly square.
  • Check hinge clearance, door swing, leveling feet, and the space needed to pull out freezer drawers.
  • Account for required rear ventilation and water-line or electrical access specified by the exact installation manual.
  • Confirm that the refrigerator can pass through entry doors, interior doors, stairways, and tight turns.
  • Do not assume that “counter-depth” means the doors, handles, hinges, and rear clearance will finish flush with the counters.

For a construction or remodeling project, complete these measurements before finalizing cabinet depth and surrounding trim. The refrigerator’s published width is not the same thing as the finished clearance it needs to open properly.

2. Compare usable storage, not only cubic feet

Advertised capacity is a useful starting point, but it does not tell you how much room is convenient to use. Ice makers, internal water systems, fixed shelves, shallow freezer drawers, thick door structures, and dispenser mechanisms all reduce or divide usable storage.

Families that buy large trays, pizza boxes, sheet pans, or bulk frozen food should inspect shelf width and freezer-bin dimensions. A nominally larger refrigerator can be less useful than a smaller one if its shelves are divided in the wrong places for your food.

3. Decide whether dispensing is worth the space trade-off

External water and ice dispensers are convenient, but they consume door space and add plumbing and mechanical components. Internal dispensers preserve a cleaner exterior and may protect more door storage, but they can be slower or less convenient to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bosch 800 and Bosch 500 are better suited to shoppers who prefer internal systems or do not require an external dispenser. The Whirlpool side-by-side is the more appropriate choice for buyers who specifically want through-door water and ice.

4. Use the EnergyGuide label for the exact model

Compare the estimated annual kilowatt-hours on the EnergyGuide label rather than judging efficiency from brand, size, or marketing language alone. ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are approximately 9% more efficient than models that meet only the federal minimum standard.

ENERGY STAR recommends buying an appropriately sized refrigerator, considering a top-freezer configuration for lower energy use, minimizing unnecessary doors, checking door seals, and allowing air circulation. It also recommends keeping the refrigerator around 35–38°F. The Bosch B36CT80SN* family’s listed 570 kWh per year is a useful example of how to compare official data, but it should not be generalized to every Bosch model or suffix.

5. Check local repair coverage before prioritizing smart features

A refrigerator is difficult to live without and expensive to replace after a failure. The cited RTINGS research treats parts availability and authorized service coverage as meaningful buying factors. Bosch is described as having a robust U.S. service network, and GE is also described as having robust coverage. Samsung coverage is characterized as stronger in major metro areas than in rural areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are broad network observations, not a promise for every ZIP code. Before purchase, verify the authorized service provider serving your address, the warranty period and exclusions, and whether common replacement parts are available for the exact model.

6. Price the complete delivery and installation job

The appliance price is only one part of the project. Ask the retailer exactly what is included in delivery, leveling, water-line connection, door removal, installation, old-appliance removal, and haul-away. Confirm whether the old refrigerator must already be disconnected and whether the delivery crew will remove doors to get through a tight opening.

ENERGY STAR notes that many appliance retailers will pick up and recycle an old refrigerator when delivering a replacement. Ask whether haul-away and recycling are included in the quoted service, and check whether your utility offers a rebate for the selected ENERGY STAR model. Do not assume that a rebate, delivery service, or installation package applies to every model or location.

A practical refrigerator-buying checklist

  1. Write down the exact model number and suffix. Similar names can represent different finishes, dimensions, features, and energy figures.
  2. Measure the opening and route. Include height, width, depth, doors, walls, trim, cabinets, and drawer clearance.
  3. Choose the layout. Select French-door for broad fresh-food storage, side-by-side for eye-level freezer access and reduced door swing, or top-freezer for simplicity and typically lower energy use.
  4. Inspect the interior dimensions. Check shelf width, door-bin depth, freezer-bin geometry, and space for your largest routinely stored items.
  5. Decide on water and ice. Confirm whether you want external dispensing, an internal system, an auto-refilling pitcher, or no plumbed water feature.
  6. Read the EnergyGuide label. Compare annual kWh and verify ENERGY STAR certification for the precise model.
  7. Verify service locally. Confirm warranty support and an authorized repair option for your ZIP code.
  8. Get installation terms in writing. Include delivery, leveling, connections, door removal, haul-away, recycling, and any required accessories.
  9. Buy only compatible replacement parts. Check the manufacturer’s part number before ordering a filter or other consumable.

Useful accessories after purchase

Two inexpensive accessories can help with routine ownership, provided they are selected for the exact refrigerator. A model-compatible water filter is preferable to a generic filter when the refrigerator requires a particular replacement part. Confirm the model number and filter part number in the owner’s documentation before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A refrigerator thermometer can provide an independent check of the food-compartment temperature. Use it to confirm that the refrigerator is holding a safe, consistent temperature after installation and after loading it with groceries. It does not replace the manufacturer’s controls or correct a malfunctioning appliance.

Our testing and attribution note

The performance figures in this guide come from the cited RTINGS testing, including scores for temperature uniformity, produce preservation, capacity, noise, ice making, parts availability, and everyday use. The Whirlpool recommendation also reflects Good Housekeeping’s review and its consumer testers’ feedback on shelving, drawers, and the in-door ice bin. This article does not claim that the writer personally tested any of these refrigerators.

Laboratory scores are useful for comparing models under a consistent method, but they do not replace checking your own kitchen opening, storage habits, local service coverage, current energy label, and delivery constraints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which refrigerator is the best overall?

The Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS is the best overall performance pick in the cited testing. It combines strong temperature uniformity, excellent produce preservation, low measured noise, and a favorable service-and-parts outlook. Its 20.8-cubic-foot counter-depth capacity makes it less suitable for households that need maximum storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is counter-depth or standard-depth better?

Counter-depth models project less into the kitchen but generally provide less storage. Standard-depth models are more practical for large households, bulk shopping, and wide containers. Counter-depth does not mean completely flush because doors, handles, hinges, and required rear clearance still affect the final projection.

Which refrigerator style usually uses the least energy?

ENERGY STAR identifies top-freezer refrigerators as typically the least energy-intensive configuration. Actual consumption depends on the exact model, size, settings, features, and use, so compare the EnergyGuide label and verify ENERGY STAR certification for the precise model.

Should I buy a refrigerator with an external water and ice dispenser?

Buy one if immediate dispensing convenience is important and you accept the loss of door storage and added plumbing and mechanical components. Choose an internal system or no dispenser if you prefer more usable door space, a simpler exterior, or fewer connected features.

What should I check before refrigerator delivery?

Confirm the opening measurements, door and freezer-drawer clearance, delivery route, rear ventilation, water and electrical requirements, leveling, door removal, installation, and old-appliance haul-away. Ask the retailer which services are included and whether the old refrigerator must be disconnected before delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose the Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS for the best tested balance of temperature control, produce preservation, quiet operation, and serviceability. Choose the Bosch 500 Series B36FD52SNS when your family needs standard-depth storage, the Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL when features and dual ice matter most, and the Whirlpool WRSF5536RZ when a side-by-side layout solves your kitchen-clearance or organization needs. For straightforward value, choose the GE GTS22KGNRWW; for a compact apartment or secondary kitchen, choose the Frigidaire FFTR1425VW. Whichever model you select, measure the opening, verify local service, compare the exact EnergyGuide label, and price delivery and haul-away before ordering.
