BHG’s accessible, updated guide is now titled “The 7 Best Wet/Dry Vacs, Tested by BHG,” and its current picks should not be mistaken for that earlier five-model list. For construction and workshop cleanup, the current guide’s tested examples still offer useful reference points: a 16-gallon model for larger debris loads, wheeled and cordless options for maneuverability, and smaller tanks for more portable cleanup.
Why the five-model list is unclear
A secondary index identifies a July 2025 BHG article called “The 5 Best Wet/Dry Vacs, Tested by BHG,” but its link leads to a BHG page now titled “The 7 Best Wet/Dry Vacs, Tested by BHG”, updated July 24, 2026. The available evidence does not establish the original five picks or their test findings. The seven-model roster below is therefore presented as BHG’s current guide, not as a reconstruction of the earlier list.

What BHG’s current testing covers
BHG says it tested 32 models for up to six months, scoring setup, effectiveness, maneuverability, portability, ease of emptying, noise, and overall value. Those criteria are relevant to construction use: a vacuum that picks up debris effectively may still be awkward to move, loud, or inconvenient to empty. Results and product descriptions below are attributed to BHG’s current guide; they are not independent test findings.

| BHG category | Current pick | What BHG reports | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall | Vacmaster Professional Beast Series 5-gallon wet/dry vac | BHG reports that it picked up tested dry and liquid messes in one pass. Stored attachments and a dry-debris bag were useful; its noise diffuser made little difference. | A moderate-capacity example with attention to accessory storage and dry-debris handling. Do not expect the diffuser to make operation quiet. |
| Best budget | Dirt Devil 5-gallon wet/dry vac | BHG reports effective pickup of debris and liquids for its size. It lacks a crevice tool, and the wet filter was difficult to fit and tore slightly during testing. | Check the accessory kit and follow the model’s wet-use filter instructions before taking on liquid cleanup. |
| Best with wheels | DeWalt 9-gallon wet/dry vac | BHG reports using it on garage debris and a clogged sink. It includes wheels and a blower; BHG notes noise and filter drying and cleaning after wet use. | Wheels can help when moving a canister around a work area. Plan to clean and dry the filter after wet pickup as directed by the manual. |
| Best cordless | Ryobi 40V 10-gallon cordless wet/dry vacuum | BHG reports using it for vehicle cleaning, plaster dust, and a tile spill. It was convenient to clean and use without a cord, but did not leave spills completely dry; wheels came off easily in long-term testing. | Cordless operation avoids dependence on a nearby outlet, but the reported spill result and wheel durability are relevant trade-offs for jobsite use. |
| Best large capacity | Craftsman 16-gallon wet/dry vac | BHG reports testing wet and dry leaves, branches, cat litter, and water. It was heavy and loud, while wheels helped with maneuverability. | A larger tank means less frequent emptying, but the reported weight and noise may matter when transporting or using it in occupied spaces. |
| Best compact | Armor All 2.5-gallon wet/dry vacuum | BHG includes it in the current comparison table; the available summary does not state product-specific test findings. | Consider compact capacity for vehicle or spot cleanup rather than assuming it suits sustained large debris or water removal. |
| Best upright | Roborock F25 wet dry vacuum | BHG lists an 870 ml tank and says the upright format lies flat to clean under furniture. | This is a different format from a shop-vac canister. Its listed tank size should not be directly compared with shop-vac gallon capacities as though the machines served identical jobs. |
How to choose one for a workshop or jobsite
Start with the material and cleanup scale
Wet/dry vacs are designed for dry debris and liquids; ordinary vacuum cleaners are intended for dry dust and dirt and may be damaged by wet messes. For a small vehicle interior or occasional spot cleanup, a compact tank may be easier to carry. Routine spills call for a balance of capacity and portability. Large garage, workshop, or water-cleanup jobs can make a bigger tank useful, though it takes more space and is heavier to move. BHG’s current shop-vac examples range from 2.5 to 16 gallons; the upright cleaner’s 870 ml capacity belongs to a separate product format.
#1 Best Overall
- PORTABLE: Lightweight, 2.5-gallon wet dry shop vac offers unparalleled mobility
- IDEAL FOR SMALL MESSES: Perfect for the home, garage, cars, trucks and vans
- EASY TO STORE: Compact size, carry handle and cord wrap feature allow for easy storage
- TWO-IN-ONE CAPABILITY: Shop vacuum can be used as a blower for added versatility
- DESIGNED FOR TIGHT SPACES: 1-1/4 in. shop vacuum accessories allow for maneuverability in tight areas
Alicia Sokolowski, president and co-CEO of AspenClean, says in BHG’s current roundup: “There are two critical specifications to think about: the horsepower and the tank capacity in gallons.” Treat those specifications alongside the intended task, the machine’s handling, and the accessories supplied—not as a substitute for checking whether a particular model is suited to the material you need to collect.
Balance capacity, mobility, and power source
- Tank size: Larger tanks reduce how often you need to stop and empty the vacuum, but usually mean more bulk and a heavier machine to store or carry.
- Wheels and handles: Wheeled canisters can be easier to move across a garage or workshop floor. Check that the wheels and attachments stay secure in the intended use; BHG reported wheels coming off easily on its cordless example during long-term testing.
- Corded or cordless: A cordless model removes the need to work near an outlet, but requires a compatible charged battery and may not deliver the same experience as a corded option. BHG’s cordless pick did not leave spills completely dry in its reported test.
- Hose reach and size: Consider whether the hose and body can reach the work area without repeatedly repositioning the machine. BHG’s accessible summary does not give comparable hose-reach figures across the picks, so check each model’s specifications.
Check the included tools and wet-use setup
Floor nozzles, crevice tools, car nozzles, extension wands, wet nozzles, and blower functions can change how conveniently a vacuum handles a job. Included kits differ: BHG notes that the Dirt Devil pick lacks a crevice tool and that the DeWalt pick includes a blower. Confirm the exact model and package rather than assuming an attachment is included or interchangeable.

Wet pickup may require a particular filter configuration, and care after use varies by model. BHG’s current reviews discuss filter installation, cleaning and drying, bagged dry debris, drainage, and storage. Follow the specific vacuum’s manual for filter changes and liquid pickup; do not assume a dry-use setup is safe for wet pickup.

Account for noise, emptying, and maintenance
Noise and maneuverability are part of BHG’s evaluation, not incidental details. The current guide describes its Craftsman large-capacity pick as heavy and loud and says the Vacmaster’s noise diffuser made little difference. For a construction setting, also consider where debris will be emptied, whether the tank drains conveniently, and how much time filter cleaning and storage will add after wet use.

Can a wet/dry vacuum be used outdoors?
Use outdoors only when the particular vacuum’s manual permits it and the planned conditions are within its stated limits. The available BHG Australia shopping guide advises checking the specific model’s manual before outdoor use; it is general category guidance from a different market, not a finding about the US picks. Do not infer outdoor suitability from a product being marketed as a shop vac.

The current BHG article is useful for comparing cleanup roles and reported trade-offs, but it does not verify which five models appeared in the July 2025 version named in the title. The currently accessible evidence also does not establish current prices or stock. For a purchase decision, verify the exact model, accessory bundle, filter requirements, warranty, and availability with the manufacturer or retailer.
