The 5 Best Solar Lanterns of 2023: Tested Picks for Camping, Emergencies, and Jobsites

The best solar lantern depends on the job: Luci for lightweight simplicity, LuminAID for emergencies, Crush Light for minimal weight, Lighthouse 600 for brightness, and PackLite Nova for affordable personal lighting.

This is a historical 2023 ranking. Product specifications, ownership, availability, and prices may have changed since publication. For a simple, lightweight solar lantern, choose the MPOWERD Luci Outdoor 2.0. For emergencies and limited phone charging, choose the LuminAID PackLite Max 2-in-1. If maximum brightness matters more than portability, the Goal Zero Lighthouse 600 is the better fit.

Solar lanterns are useful around campsites, during power outages, and on construction or maintenance jobs where temporary lighting is needed. But “solar” does not always mean solar-only: some lanterns are designed mainly for USB charging and use their small integrated panel as a slow backup or maintenance charger.

  • Reported output: 75 lumens.
  • Reported tested battery life: approximately eight hours in Outdoor Life’s comparison.
  • Protection: IP67 was listed in that comparison.
  • Best scale: personal light, tent light, or small emergency light.

Outdoor Life found it adequate inside a small tent but less effective for illuminating a picnic table or a larger outdoor area. That distinction matters: 75 lumens can be useful for reading, finding tools, or moving through a dark room, but a group campsite may need two or three lanterns.

Who should buy it

Choose the Luci Outdoor 2.0 if you want a self-contained light for backpacking, travel, a vehicle kit, or basic outage preparation. It is especially appealing where low weight and flat storage matter.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you need enough light for a large work area, cooking station, or construction site. A higher-output hybrid lantern will be more practical.

Solar-charging reality

The integrated panel is convenient, but charging speed depends on direct sunlight, panel orientation, cloud cover, season, latitude, and whether the lantern is being used while charging. The manual advises direct outdoor sunlight for best results. Do not interpret IP67 as indestructibility; it describes resistance under specified test conditions, not immunity from impact, punctures, or prolonged exposure.

2. LuminAID PackLite Max 2-in-1: best for emergencies

The LuminAID PackLite Max 2-in-1 is the strongest emergency-oriented choice in this group because the 2-in-1 design combines an inflatable solar lantern with a power-bank function. That makes it more useful during an outage than a lantern that only provides illumination.

  • Best scale: emergency room, tent, vehicle, or household backup.
  • Charging: solar plus USB in the relevant product category.
  • Key advantage: limited phone charging in addition to lighting.
  • Important uncertainty: battery capacity, connector type, output, and exact brightness should be checked against the specific 2023 edition.

The power-bank feature is emergency backup, not a replacement for a dedicated power bank or solar generator. Charging a phone drains the lantern, and a small integrated panel may take a long time to restore energy to both devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you need maximum brightness, rapid phone charging, or a lantern whose specifications are easy to compare across current model generations.

3. Goal Zero Crush Light: best ultralight lantern

The Goal Zero Crush Light is the minimalist choice. 99Boulders listed it at approximately 3.2 ounces and 60 lumens, making it one of the more attractive options for ultralight backpackers and anyone who wants a backup light taking up almost no space.

  • Best scale: personal or tent lighting.
  • Strength: very small, light, and collapsible.
  • Reported output: 60 lumens.
  • Weakness: lower output and limited battery capacity.

It can be a sensible light for reading, locating gear, or keeping in an emergency pouch. It is not the right tool for lighting a broad work area or shared campsite.

Avoid model confusion

Goal Zero has sold several products using the Crush name, including the Crush Light and Crush Light Chroma. OutdoorGearLab lists them separately. Do not combine the specifications of different versions when buying or writing a product description.

4. Goal Zero Lighthouse 600: best bright hybrid lantern

The Goal Zero Lighthouse 600 is the choice when brightness matters more than minimum weight. Outdoor Life listed 600 lumens, a 5,200 mAh battery, solar and USB charging, and approximately three hours of maximum-output runtime in its comparison.

LuminAID Nova Inflatable Solar LED Lantern for Camping, Hiking & Travel
  • Bright solar powered lantern with 75 lumens of LED light. Multiple brightness settings make it a perfect indoor or outdoor light.
  • Lightweight, inflatable, collapsible, waterproof (IP67), shatterproof, and dustproof. Completely safe for children.
  • Great for camping, hiking, fishing, emergency preparedness, patio parties/picnics, fun in the pool, and more. Makes a perfect gift.
  • Long Battery Life - Up to 24 hours of light when battery is fully charged. No additional batteries needed!
  • Two Ways To Recharge (Solar & USB) - Recharges in approximately 10 hours of direct outdoor sunlight or by micro USB input (cord included) in 1-2 hours.
  • Best scale: full campsite, cooking area, work area, or larger room during an outage.
  • Reported maximum output: 600 lumens.
  • Battery: 5,200 mAh listed in comparative coverage.
  • Charging: solar input and built-in USB charging.

This is a solar-rechargeable hybrid lantern, not a solar-only lantern. In practical use, USB is likely to be the more dependable way to fully charge it by a particular time. The solar panel is valuable for resilience and gradual replenishment, but the larger battery and higher output make it a poor match for a backpacker expecting a tiny, solar-only light.

Consult the Lighthouse 600 specification document for model-specific charging and power-hub information. Do not assume that a solar input establishes a waterproof rating.

Who should buy it

Choose it for car camping, outdoor gatherings, a workshop, or emergency lighting where a table, cooking area, or room needs substantially more light than an inflatable 75-lumen lantern can provide.

Who should skip it

Skip it for ultralight backpacking or if your priority is a lantern that can be recharged primarily from a small integrated panel.

5. LuminAID PackLite Nova: best budget inflatable lantern

The LuminAID PackLite Nova is a compact, inflatable lantern for buyers who want inexpensive personal or tent lighting. Outdoor Life listed 75 lumens, approximately 6.5 hours of battery life, and IP67 protection in its comparison. The same coverage placed its price at about $30 at the time; that was a publication-era price, not a current price.

  • Best scale: personal, tent, or small-room lighting.
  • Reported output: 75 lumens.
  • Reported battery life: approximately 6.5 hours.
  • Charging: solar and USB.

The Nova is a good secondary lantern for an emergency kit or a low-cost way to provide each camper with a personal light. Its lower output and smaller battery limit its usefulness for phone charging and broad-area illumination.

How to choose a solar lantern

Start with the lighting scale

Lumens are useful, but they do not tell the whole story. Diffuser design, beam spread, mounting height, color temperature, and glare can make a lower-output lantern more comfortable and useful than a brighter one.

  • Under 100 lumens: tent lighting, reading, personal navigation, and backup use.
  • 100–300 lumens: a small table or two-person campsite.
  • 300–600 lumens: a general campsite, cooking area, or larger room.
  • 600 lumens and above: broad-area lighting, with greater battery drain, glare, and weight.

These are practical guidelines, not an industry standard. For a construction or maintenance task, also consider whether the lantern illuminates the work surface without creating harsh shadows or glare.

Understand the three charging categories

  1. Solar-only integrated-panel lights: usually simple and light, but commonly lower-output and slow to recharge.
  2. Solar-plus-USB inflatable lights: more flexible for home and travel; USB is usually the practical primary charging method.
  3. Bright hybrid lanterns: larger batteries and much higher output, but more weight and greater dependence on USB power.

Check runtime carefully

A runtime claim is meaningful only when you know the brightness mode. Maximum-output runtime can be much shorter than low-mode runtime. Cold temperatures, an aging battery, incomplete charging, and phone charging can reduce the time available. Never turn a low-mode runtime into a general “lasts all night” claim.

Compare weather protection precisely

Use the actual IP rating where it is documented. “Waterproof” is often too broad. An IP rating does not automatically prove resistance to drops, freezing temperatures, punctures, long-term outdoor exposure, or harsh worksite treatment.

Decide whether phone charging is genuinely useful

A phone-charging port can be valuable during an outage, but it also consumes the lantern’s battery. Check the exact model’s battery capacity, output, connector type, and whether the feature applies to the 2023 version. The PackLite Max 2-in-1 is the clearest emergency-oriented choice here; the Luci Outdoor 2.0 should not be treated as a phone charger without model-specific documentation.

Solar charging: realistic expectations

Small integrated panels are convenient, not fast. Direct outdoor sunlight is materially better than indoor window light. Shade, clouds, winter sun, low-angle sunlight, dirt, leaves, and poor panel orientation can reduce charging performance. A panel may maintain a charge over time without quickly refilling a depleted large battery.

For reliable charging:

  1. Turn the lantern off.
  2. Clean the solar panel.
  3. Place it outdoors in direct sunlight.
  4. Orient the panel toward the sun and keep it unobstructed.
  5. Allow a full daylight period rather than expecting a quick top-up.
  6. Use USB when a full charge is needed by a specific time.
  7. Check the model-specific manual if the charge indicator behaves unexpectedly.

Troubleshooting common failures

The solar charging appears not to work

First eliminate indirect indoor light, shade, dirt, and incorrect indicator interpretation. Test the lantern outdoors with the unit switched off. If USB charging works but solar charging does not after a proper daylight period, consult the model manual; the solar input may be intended mainly for slow maintenance charging, or the panel, battery, or electronics may have failed.

The lantern does not last through the night

Check whether the quoted runtime applied to low mode. Maximum brightness, cold weather, phone charging, incomplete charging, and battery aging can all shorten operation. A second small lantern is often more useful than relying on one device for every room or task.

An inflatable lantern leaks or will not stay inflated

Check that the valve is fully closed and inspect for punctures, seam damage, sharp objects in the storage bag, excessive heat, and material aging. Inflatable construction improves packability, but it does not make a lantern permanently indestructible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The light is bright but uncomfortable

Cool-white LEDs can feel harsh in a tent or room. A diffused, warmer light at a lower setting may be better for reading, cooking, and social use than maximum brightness.

Maintenance and emergency-kit advice

  • Keep solar panels clean and unobstructed.
  • Store the lantern away from extreme heat and inspect it periodically.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s storage guidance for battery charge level.
  • Inspect inflatable bodies, valves, and seams before a trip or storm.
  • Keep a separate flashlight or headlamp as a backup.
  • For a prolonged outage, add spare power, batteries, a radio, and multiple lighting sources.

For many households, the most useful arrangement is not one “perfect” lantern. A bright hybrid lantern can illuminate a room or work area while one or two lightweight inflatable lanterns provide personal light in separate rooms.

Best choice by use case

  • Best overall: MPOWERD Luci Outdoor 2.0.
  • Best for an emergency kit: LuminAID PackLite Max 2-in-1.
  • Best for ultralight backpacking: Goal Zero Crush Light.
  • Best for a campsite, work area, or outage: Goal Zero Lighthouse 600.
  • Best budget personal light: LuminAID PackLite Nova.

For ambient campsite lighting rather than general illumination, solar string lights such as the MPOWERD Luci Solar String Lights are a separate option. They should not be confused with a lantern intended to light a table, room, or work surface.
