Google is turning Google Home into a Gemini-centered platform—not simply replacing Nest speakers and cameras with new hardware. Gemini for Home is rolling out to compatible existing speakers and displays, while Google’s new $99.99 Home Speaker is designed for the fuller Gemini experience. New wired Nest cameras and a wired doorbell add 2K HDR video and feed Google’s subscription-based AI security features.
The key buying question is not whether you need every new product. It is whether your current devices are compatible, whether you need Gemini Live or advanced camera history, and whether Google Home Premium’s recurring cost fits your household.

What Google announced
Google’s announcement is a broader platform change involving five parts:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Gemini for Home: a more conversational voice assistant that can understand natural-language requests, answer questions, control compatible devices and create automations.
- A redesigned Google Home experience: including tools such as Ask Home and Help me create.
- Google Home Premium: subscription tiers that add longer camera history and advanced Gemini security features.
- Google Home Speaker (2026): a $99.99 speaker designed specifically around Gemini for Home.
- Three wired security products: Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) and Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen).
Google is not replacing every Nest device. According to Google’s compatibility documentation, Gemini for Home is also being extended to several older Google speakers and displays, although features differ by device, country, language, firmware and rollout status.

What Gemini for Home actually does
Gemini for Home is intended to make smart-home control less dependent on rigid commands. For example, a user might say:
- “Turn off the downstairs lights and lock the doors.”
- “Create an automation that turns on the lights when motion is detected after sunset.”
- “What happened at the back gate today?”
- “Was there a package delivery this afternoon?”
Google also describes whole-home activity summaries, natural-language automation creation, descriptive camera notifications and searchable video history. However, these are not all free features. Camera interpretation, extended history and some advanced Gemini tools depend on Google Home Premium, the camera model and regional availability.
Gemini-generated descriptions should be treated as assistance, not proof. Lighting, weather, obstructions, camera angle and motion blur can cause a camera to misclassify a person, animal, vehicle or package. Do not use an AI description as the sole basis for an emergency, medical or personal-safety decision.

No new speaker is required for the basic Gemini for Home voice assistant. Google lists compatibility with:
- Google Home Speaker (2026)
- Nest Hub (1st generation)
- Nest Hub (2nd generation)
- Nest Hub Max
- Nest Audio
- Nest Mini (2nd generation)
- Google Home Mini (1st generation)
Google says older speakers and displays support most Gemini for Home features, but not Gemini Live. The new Google Home Speaker is therefore best understood as the purpose-built gateway to the full conversational experience, rather than the only way to obtain Gemini.
Google’s stated minimum firmware requirements are Cast firmware version 3.76 or later for speakers and Fuchsia firmware version 28 or later for displays. Android users may also need to update Android’s Speech Recognition and Synthesis components. Availability is being expanded rather than delivered identically to every household.
Important migration warning: once a household switches to Gemini for Home, Google says the home cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Compatible devices use Gemini instead, and devices that later become eligible may switch automatically. Check your household’s device compatibility and comfort with the new assistant before opting in.
Google Home Speaker (2026): who should buy it?
The new Google Home Speaker costs $99.99 in the United States. Preorders opened June 17, 2026, and Google said stores would receive it from June 25. Google describes it as offering 360-degree sound, Gemini Live support and the ability to pair with a Google TV Streamer for an enhanced audio setup.
Those are Google’s product claims. The supplied product information does not provide independent measurements of bass response, microphone performance, response latency, multi-room reliability or audio quality, so the speaker should not be described as definitively better-sounding than Nest Audio.
Rank #2
- Whole-Home Smart Audio – Get powerful, room-filling sound in 3 rooms at once or group all three speakers together for seamless multi-room playback. Perfect for homes, apartments, or offices.
- Stereo Pairing & Grouping – Pair two speakers for immersive stereo sound or assign each to different areas (e.g., kitchen, living room, bedroom) for dynamic audio throughout your space.
- Hands-Free Voice Assistant – With Google Assistant built in, control music, get answers, set timers, check the weather, and control smart home devices with simple voice commands.
- Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Connectivity – Stream your favorite music from services like Spotify, YouTube Music, and more via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Works with Android, iOS, and Chromecast-enabled apps.
- Smart Home Ready – Nest Audio integrates with thousands of compatible smart home devices – use your voice to dim lights, control thermostats, lock doors, and more.
It makes sense for:
- Existing Google Home households that specifically want Gemini Live.
- People replacing an aging Nest Mini or Nest Audio.
- Homes already using a Google TV Streamer.
- Users who prefer conversational voice control over a display.
It is a poor fit for:
- Households that only need timers, music and basic device commands.
- Buyers unwilling to pay for advanced Gemini or camera features.
- Anyone needing battery operation or offline-first control.
- People seeking independently verified premium music performance.
Buying the speaker does not upgrade an older camera. Camera hardware, compatible firmware and the relevant Google Home Premium tier still determine which security features are available.
The new wired Nest cameras and doorbell
Google says the new wired lineup was engineered for Gemini for Home and provides its highest Nest image quality. The verified specifications are:
| Device | Power | Video and view | Free allowance | Advanced ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam Indoor, wired, 3rd gen | Wired | 2K HDR; 152° diagonal field of view | Six hours of event-video previews; clips up to 10 seconds | Up to 60 days of event history and 10 days of continuous history with Advanced, where supported |
| Nest Cam Outdoor, wired, 2nd gen | Wired | Google announced the model; complete specifications and U.S. pricing were not verified in the supplied product information | Verify on the official product page | Verify device compatibility and plan limits |
| Nest Doorbell, wired, 3rd gen | Wired doorbell infrastructure | 2K HDR; 166° diagonal field of view; 1:1 aspect ratio | Six hours of event-video previews; clips up to 10 seconds | Up to 60 days of event history and 10 days of continuous history with Advanced, where supported |
Nest Cam Indoor, wired, 3rd gen
Google lists person, animal and vehicle alerts, 2K HDR video and a 152-degree diagonal field of view. U.S. list pricing was $99.99 when checked on August 18, 2026; a temporary $69.99 sale price was displayed at that time. Sale pricing and availability can change.
It is a sensible option for an indoor location with continuous power, particularly if the household already uses Google Home. It is less suitable for renters who need battery operation, buyers seeking local recording or anyone unwilling to pay for extended cloud history.
Nest Cam Outdoor, wired, 2nd gen
The outdoor model is part of the launch, but the supplied research does not verify its complete specifications or current U.S. price. Do not assume that its resolution, field of view, recording limits or subscription behavior match the indoor camera. Confirm those details on Google’s official connected-home store page before buying.
Because it is wired, installation requires a suitable power route, weather-appropriate placement and reliable Wi-Fi coverage. It is aimed at permanent installations, not locations where a battery camera is the only practical option.

Nest Doorbell, wired, 3rd gen
The wired 3rd-generation doorbell records in 2K HDR, has a 166-degree diagonal field of view and uses a 1:1 aspect ratio. Google lists alerts for people, packages, vehicles and animals, plus six hours of event-video previews without a paid plan.
U.S. list pricing was $179.99 when checked on August 18, 2026, with a temporary $139.99 sale price displayed. The doorbell requires compatible wiring and a suitable transformer, as well as Wi-Fi, the Google Home app, a Google Account, a compatible mobile device and broadband internet with at least 2 Mbps upload speed.
Wired versus battery Nest Doorbell
The wired 3rd-generation model is not a direct substitute for the battery doorbell. The power connection enables a higher listed resolution—2K HDR versus 960p HDR on the battery model—and a wider listed field of view, 166 degrees versus 145 degrees. It also supports the possibility of continuous history with Google Home Premium Advanced, subject to device, power and service requirements.
Rank #3
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
The battery model remains more practical where wiring is unavailable or installation cannot be altered. The wired model is the stronger technical fit for a homeowner who wants higher-resolution video and continuous-recording capability, but it requires the infrastructure to support it.
Google Home Premium: what is free and what is paid?
Google Home Premium is central to the value proposition. The following are U.S. prices seen on August 18, 2026 and should not be generalized internationally:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Main additions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $10 | $100 | 30 days of event-based video history, intelligent alerts and additional Gemini and automation features |
| Advanced | $20 | $200 | 60 days of event history, up to 10 days of continuous history on supported devices, searchable video history, descriptive notifications, event descriptions and daily summaries |
Annual billing saves $20 compared with 12 monthly Standard payments and $40 compared with 12 monthly Advanced payments.
Without Premium
For the new wired Indoor Cam and Doorbell, Google lists six hours of event-video previews, with clips up to 10 seconds, alongside basic device functions and built-in alerts subject to device and service limitations. “Gemini-enabled” does not mean every Gemini security feature is free.
With Standard
Standard adds 30 days of event-based history, more intelligent alerts where supported, natural-language automation tools and additional Gemini for Home features. Google lists examples including familiar-face, package, garage-door, smoke and carbon-monoxide detection, but availability depends on the device, region and service.
With Advanced
Advanced is the relevant tier for searchable video history, Gemini-generated event descriptions, daily summaries, descriptive notifications and the longest listed history. It provides up to 10 days of continuous video history only on compatible cameras and wired doorbells under suitable power and network conditions; it does not turn every Nest camera into a continuous recorder.
Google says Home Premium is included with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions. Because bundle terms, plan names and regional eligibility can change, existing subscribers should check their current account benefits before paying separately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Installation, compatibility and cloud dependence
Before switching or buying, check the following:
- Install or update the Google Home app.
- Add each device to the correct Google Home household.
- Update device firmware and confirm the relevant firmware minimum.
- Check the Google Account, household permissions and country and language availability.
- Confirm whether Gemini for Home early access or rollout is available.
- Review Home Premium options before enabling advanced camera functions.
- Configure activity zones, familiar faces, notifications and privacy controls.
- Test voice commands and camera-history searches.
- Review access for every household member.
Interface labels and setup steps may vary by region and rollout stage. A wired outdoor camera needs power, cable routing, weather-appropriate placement and Wi-Fi coverage. A wired doorbell additionally needs compatible doorbell wiring and transformer capacity.
These products and their advanced capabilities rely heavily on Google accounts, the Google Home app, internet connectivity and cloud services. Voice responses, cloud video history and AI interpretation may be unavailable or degraded during an outage. Buyers seeking local, offline-first security should treat this as a fundamental limitation rather than a minor setup detail.

Privacy and household access
Camera history and AI features can affect everyone in a Google Home household. Review who can access live views and stored history, what happens when a household member is removed, how familiar faces are configured, and whether audio, recording or notifications can be disabled for each device.
Google’s current support and privacy documentation should be the authority for retention, processing and household-access details. Do not assume that changing a notification setting deletes stored history, or that opting into Gemini has no effect on how home activity is processed.
Who should upgrade?
Existing Nest speaker owner
Do not buy immediately just to obtain Gemini for Home. Your compatible speaker or display may receive the voice assistant after the required firmware and rollout arrive. Buy the new speaker if Gemini Live, a replacement device or Google TV Streamer pairing is specifically valuable.
One-camera household
The free allowance may be enough if six hours of short event previews meets your needs. Standard becomes more defensible when you regularly need 30-day event history or improved alerts. Advanced is difficult to justify unless searchable history, descriptions, daily summaries or continuous recording matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMulti-camera household
Advanced is the relevant plan if you want longer history, cross-camera searches, event descriptions and continuous history on supported wired products. Include the recurring subscription in the total cost before comparing hardware prices.
Renter or battery-only installation
The new wired cameras and doorbell are poor fits if you cannot run power or alter existing wiring. A battery-based ecosystem is more practical, although it may offer lower resolution or a different recording model.
Current wired-doorbell owner
Check transformer compatibility, wiring condition and Wi-Fi before assuming the upgrade is straightforward. The 2K HDR resolution and wider field of view are meaningful on paper, but they do not eliminate installation requirements or subscription costs.
Google AI Pro or Ultra subscriber
Check whether Home Premium is already included in your plan. Paying for a separate subscription may be unnecessary, but the exact bundle and regional terms should be confirmed in your Google account.

Focus on cloud dependence, retention, household permissions and whether AI-generated descriptions are acceptable. Google Home is a poor fit for someone who requires local recording and offline operation as core requirements.
Bottom line
Gemini makes Google Home more ambitious, but the upgrade is selective. Existing compatible speakers and displays may receive much of the new assistant without new hardware. The $99.99 Google Home Speaker is mainly for people who want Gemini Live and a purpose-built voice device. The new wired Nest cameras and doorbell are aimed at homeowners seeking 2K HDR video and Google’s AI-assisted security tools.
The biggest qualification is Google Home Premium. Basic previews are available without it, but the features that make the cameras feel meaningfully “Gemini-powered”—searchable history, generated descriptions, daily summaries and extended or continuous recording—are concentrated in the paid tiers. Add the subscription, wiring, cloud dependence and irreversible assistant migration to the decision, and the right upgrade becomes clear: buy only the capability your household will actually use.
