How these 2026 picks were selected
The five category recommendations below come from Sleep Foundation’s guide, updated September 30, 2026. Sleep Foundation says its team has tested over 2,000 mattresses in its Seattle Test Lab over the last seven years. It describes analyzing construction, conducting hands-on tests, sending mattresses home with testers for multiple weeks, and reviewing verified user feedback. Those methods and findings belong to Sleep Foundation; this article does not present them as its own product tests. Sleep Foundation also displays separate figures of 1,900+ mattresses rated, 50+ years of combined experience, and 100k+ user reviews evaluated. Other 2026 guides use different approaches. Homes & Gardens says its reviewers test mattresses for at least four weeks before an initial review and assess pressure relief, temperature regulation, motion isolation, and edge support. Consumer Reports says it combines laboratory testing with surveys of mattress owners. Their methods and selections should not be treated as confirmation of Sleep Foundation’s five awards: the available Consumer Reports guide does not provide a comparable top-five list.

Separate pressure relief from support
Pressure relief and support are related but distinct comparison points in mattress testing. A mattress may cushion some areas while still needing to support your body appropriately. Do not use “firm” as a shortcut for either quality: compare how the mattress is described and tested, and consider whether that balance matches your body and sleep position.
Compare temperature, motion, and usable surface
- Temperature regulation: Testing guides assess thermoregulation, but a cooling category pick cannot promise the same result for every person.
- Motion isolation: This can matter to couples who notice a partner’s movement. Sleep Foundation cites it as one of its Helix Midnight Luxe test findings.
- Edge support: This can matter if you sit near the edge or use much of the mattress surface. Sleep Foundation reports secure perimeter support for the Helix Midnight Luxe.
Check the foundation and current purchase terms
Before ordering, check the mattress maker’s current guidance on compatible platform beds, slatted bases, adjustable bases, or box springs. Consumer Reports notes that manufacturers specify which support types work with each mattress. Also confirm the current trial, delivery, return, and warranty terms on the manufacturer’s page; these details can vary and change.

Other options and limits of the rankings
Sleep Foundation lists Siena Memory Foam Mattress separately as an affordable option, rather than as its value winner. Its page also includes an Amazon customer-review link for Siena, but that does not establish the current price, availability, or exact live listing. Verify those details before relying on a marketplace listing.
