The 5 Best Kitchen Compost Bins of 2026, Tested & Reviewed

The best kitchen compost bin depends on whether you use liners, how often you empty it, and where your food scraps go. These are the five strongest picks for bagged, bagless, large-capacity, family, and integrated waste-sorting setups.

Short answer: For most kitchens, the Joseph Joseph Collect 4L Stainless-Steel Food Waste Caddy is the best choice if you use liners and want the cleanest emptying routine. The Epica 1.3-Gallon Stainless-Steel Countertop Compost Bin is the better bagless option, while the OXO Good Grips Easy-Clean Compost Bin is the most practical large-capacity pick.

These products are kitchen scrap caddies, not electric food recyclers or finished-compost machines. Their job is to hold food waste temporarily until you take it to a municipal organics cart, community collection point, backyard composter, or another destination that accepts it.

Our picks at a glance

Bin Best for Capacity Liner approach Main advantage Main drawback
Joseph Joseph Collect 4L Stainless-Steel Food Waste Caddy Bagged collection and clean disposal 4 L Designed for custom-fit bags; removable inner bucket Carry the inner bucket outside instead of handling a full bag indoors Generic bag installation can be fussy

OXO Good Grips Easy-Clean Compost Bin Large capacity and low-fuss cleaning 0.75 or 1.75 gal.; large model is 6.62 L Bag can be tucked inside, but a bag is not required Smooth, easy-clean body and transport handle The 1.75-gallon version takes substantial counter space
Bamboozle Astrik Compost Bin Families and design-conscious kitchens 1 gal. Reusable silicone liner available Good-looking, tight-sealing design with a washable liner Relatively expensive and availability is changeable

How these kitchen compost bins were evaluated

This review draws on two independent editorial test programs rather than claiming firsthand testing by this site. Bon Appétit tested 11 countertop caddies, considering factors such as bag fit, odor detection, and how easily the contents could be disposed of. Its odor test used tea-tree oil on cotton pads rather than actual decomposing food, and its disposal test simulated removing bags and emptying the bins.

The Kitchn tested seven bins for at least one month with Apartment Therapy Media staffers using them in their own kitchens. Testers considered scent, size, appearance, price, features, and extras while handling scraps such as banana peels and coffee filters.

#1 Best Overall
Joseph Joseph Collect Stainless Steel Food Compost Bin, 1 Gallon
  • Removable inner bucket with carry handle for easy emptying
  • Flip-top lid with ventilated odour filter to reduce moisture and odours - replacement filters sold separately
  • Angled design and wide mouth for easy filling
  • Storage space for custom-fit Joseph Joseph IW2 liners in base
  • Durable and easy-clean stainless-steel body

Those methods provide useful comparative context, but no countertop caddy is universally odor-proof. Results will vary with climate, the type of scraps in the bin, how often it is emptied, and the rules of the local composting service. Opening a container can also release a stronger burst of odor than the passive leakage noticed while it remains closed.

1. Joseph Joseph Collect 4L Stainless-Steel Food Waste Caddy: best for bagged collection

Best for: People who use liners, dislike touching scraps, or carry food waste to an outdoor or municipal bin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Joseph Joseph Collect 4L compost caddy is Bon Appétit’s top bagged caddy from its 11-bin test. Its most useful feature is the removable inner bucket: you can carry that bucket outside, remove or empty the bag away from the kitchen, and avoid wrestling with a leaking full liner over the countertop.

The caddy has a stainless-steel exterior, a ventilated odor filter, storage for Joseph Joseph’s IW2 custom-fit bags, and a 4-liter capacity. The brand recommends replacing the filter every three months. Dimensions are listed slightly differently across sources—approximately 8.23 by 6.85 by 11.93 inches in the independent review and about 8 by 12 by 7 inches on the U.S. product page—so check the retailer’s current specifications if the available counter space is tight.

The compromise is bag installation. The custom-fit system is more predictable than trying to force a random liner into a shaped caddy, but generic bags can be particularly awkward to fit. Custom bags also create an ongoing consumables cost. At the time of research, the manufacturer listed a $55 price, but that figure is volatile and should not be treated as a current price.

Choose it if

  • Your organics routine depends on a tied or secured liner.
  • You want a removable bucket for cleaner outdoor disposal.
  • You are willing to use the recommended bag system or spend time fitting alternatives.

2. Epica 1.3-Gallon Stainless-Steel Countertop Compost Bin: best bagless bin

Best for: People who would rather wash a metal container than buy and fit liners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Epica stainless-steel countertop compost bin was Bon Appétit’s best bagless caddy. Its appeal is straightforward: an all-metal body that is easy to scrub, does not depend on a complicated liner mechanism, and is less likely to retain odors than some plastic containers. Retail listings describe a replaceable activated-charcoal filter.

This is a true bagless recommendation, not simply a bin that happens to tolerate being used without a bag. It does not have a dedicated system for securing a liner, so a bag may slip, collapse, or interfere with the lid. When used bagless, the container needs regular washing. Bon Appétit recommends emptying it every couple of days rather than waiting for the 1.3-gallon body to fill.

It is a poor fit if your local organics program requires a secured compostable bag, or if you routinely leave wet scraps sitting for several days. The low-complexity design is an advantage only when frequent emptying and washing fit your routine.

Rank #2
Joseph Joseph Intelligent Waste Compost Bin Food Waste Caddy with Odor Filter and Ventilation, 1 Gallon / 4 liters, Graphite
  • Ventilated design reduces moisture and odors
  • Replaceable odor filter in lid
  • Easy-access flip-top lid
  • Liner-retaining hole inside keeps liner tidy
  • Stainless-steel handle with 1 gallon capacity

Choose it if

  • You want the best bagless compost bin rather than a liner-based workflow.
  • You prefer a simple metal interior that can be washed regularly.
  • Your local collection program accepts loose food scraps.

3. OXO Good Grips Easy-Clean Compost Bin: best large, low-fuss option

Best for: Busy cooks and households that generate enough scraps to make a small caddy annoying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The OXO Good Grips Easy-Clean Compost Bin received a 5/5 rating from The Kitchn. It is a minimalist option with a tight-sealing lid, smooth interior, easy cleaning, and no requirement to use a bag. The line comes in 0.75- and 1.75-gallon sizes, so the choice matters: the smaller model saves space but may need frequent emptying, while the 1.75-gallon model holds more but occupies a noticeable area on the counter.

The large model has a stay-open lid, a tucked-in bag design, a folding transport handle, and a soft-close lid intended to contain odors while allowing some oxygen flow. The body is dishwasher-safe; OXO advises hand-washing the other components. That distinction matters because “dishwasher-safe” does not mean every removable part can go into the dishwasher.

The OXO is not the most compact option, but it removes several small annoyances: the lid can stay open while you scrape a plate, the bag edge can be hidden inside, and the smooth body is less troublesome to clean. Measure the counter before choosing the 1.75-gallon version.

Choose it if

  • You want capacity without maintaining a replaceable odor-filter cartridge.
  • You frequently add scraps while cooking and need a lid that stays open.
  • You want the option to use a bag or go bagless.

4. Bamboozle Astrik Compost Bin: best for families and design-conscious kitchens

Best for: Families generating frequent scraps and anyone who wants the caddy to look like a deliberate kitchen accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bamboozle Astrik Compost Bin received a 5/5 rating from The Kitchn and was selected as its family-friendly pick. The one-gallon bin has a tight-sealing lid, a ventilated filtered top, a silicone liner for easier cleaning, and a range of colors that makes it less utilitarian-looking than many stainless-steel containers.

Joseph Joseph Compo Wall Mountable Compost Caddy, 1 Gallon
  • Wide bin opening makes scraping food from plates easier. Capacity 4-Liters (1 US Gallon)
  • Adjustable air vent: Open - helps reduce moisture and odor build-up; Closed - provides insect barrier
  • Slimline design perfect for storing on the kitchen counter or inside kitchen cabinets. Door mounting bracket included.
  • Includes 1 x food waste caddy; 1 x bracket; 2 x screws
  • Wash and dry by hand to clean. Suitable for use with Joseph Joseph IW2 custom-fit liners

Bamboozle describes Astrik as a plant-based composite involving PLA and plant fiber. That description should not be confused with rapid home compostability. The company says the material requires proper disposal through industrial composting facilities to break down; it should not be presented as a bin that will quickly disappear in an ordinary backyard compost pile. The company also states that the bin is dishwasher-safe.

The main practical disadvantages are price and availability. The manufacturer’s product page showed the Astrik as sold out when this research was conducted, so confirm stock before planning around it. Handles are included, although some testers considered them unnecessary on a countertop bin.

Choose it if

  • You want a one-gallon caddy that looks at home in a visible kitchen.
  • A reusable silicone liner is more appealing than disposable bags.
  • You understand that plant-based material is not the same as certified home-compostable material.

5. Simplehuman Compost Caddy: best when paired with a Simplehuman trash can

Best for: People who already own a compatible Simplehuman trash or recycling bin.

The Simplehuman Compost Caddy is a 4-liter container with a magnetic docking system. The dock lets it attach alongside a compatible Simplehuman waste bin, and the caddy can also be detached for use on a counter. The dock can hold the lid open, while the caddy itself has a soft-seal lid and a smooth removable inner bucket. Simplehuman lists a five-year warranty and Code Z custom-fit liners.

The compatibility is the reason to buy it. The Kitchn selected it as a small-space pick, but Bon Appétit was more reserved because its distinctive feature is the integrated dock. As a standalone caddy, it offers fewer compelling advantages than the Joseph Joseph or OXO choices. As part of an existing Simplehuman sorting station, however, it can make separating trash, recycling, and food scraps considerably more organized.

Choose it if

  • You already have a compatible Simplehuman trash or recycling can.
  • You want waste streams grouped together rather than a loose caddy elsewhere on the counter.
  • You are comfortable using Code Z liners or checking fit carefully with alternatives.

Bagged versus bagless: which workflow is better?

Question Choose bagged if… Choose bagless if…
Handling scraps You want to tie or remove a liner and minimize contact with wet food. You do not mind carrying loose scraps or washing the container.
Local rules Your hauler requires a secured compostable liner. Your program accepts loose food scraps.
Cleaning You want less residue inside the caddy, while accepting occasional leaks. You prefer a washable metal or plastic interior and regular scrubbing.
Cost You accept recurring liner purchases. You want to avoid disposable liner costs.
Best matches here Joseph Joseph; Simplehuman Epica; OXO can work either way

A liner is not automatically better for composting. Some facilities accept only specific certified compostable bags, some require paper, and some accept loose scraps only. “Biodegradable” plastic-like bags may be rejected by a facility even if their packaging sounds environmentally friendly.

How to control odor and fruit flies

No lid eliminates the need for a sensible emptying routine. Use these steps in order:

  1. Empty sooner. If the caddy smells when opened, do not wait for it to reach full capacity. Wet scraps and warm rooms make short collection intervals more important.
  2. Drain wet food first. Let excess liquid run off before adding scraps. Liquid at the bottom accelerates odor and makes liners more likely to leak.
  3. Freeze especially troublesome scraps. Meat scraps, fish, peels, and other high-odor waste can be frozen until collection day if that is practical and permitted by your household routine.
  4. Clean the inner bucket. Wash away residue rather than relying solely on a charcoal filter or tight lid. Follow the product’s cleaning instructions; for example, OXO says its body is dishwasher-safe but other parts should be hand-washed.
  5. Keep the lid and filter in working order. A damaged seal, blocked vent, or exhausted filter can make a previously tolerable caddy unpleasant.
  6. Do not overfill. A bag that cannot be closed cleanly is more likely to leak and expose the kitchen to odor during removal.

Fruit flies are usually a sign that scraps are sitting too long or that residue remains around the rim, lid, or inner bucket. A smaller bin emptied more often can outperform a larger “odor-control” bin that is left untouched for a week.

Check your local composting rules before choosing a bin

The caddy cannot change what your composting destination accepts. Before buying liners—or deciding what to put inside—check the rules published by your municipality, waste hauler, community compost provider, or backyard-composting guide.

Acceptance varies by facility. Meat, bones, dairy, oily foods, and processed alternatives are commonly disputed categories. Some smaller facilities reject oily scraps, bones, or products marketed as biodegradable. Certified compostable liners may also be accepted in one collection program and rejected in another.

If you do not have a backyard compost pile or a city organics cart, first identify a realistic destination. A countertop caddy is useful only if the scraps eventually go somewhere your local system accepts. A municipal or community compost drop-off may be more important to your setup than the difference between two attractive countertop bins.

How much capacity do you need?

Capacity should be based on your emptying schedule, not just household size. A small household that empties scraps every day may prefer a compact 0.75-gallon container. A family that cooks frequently may appreciate the Bamboozle’s one-gallon capacity or OXO’s 1.75-gallon model, provided there is enough counter space.

Epica Kitchen Compost Bin for Kitchen Countertops, 1.3 Galllon - Silver
  • FEATURED IN BON APPETIT & FORBES: Recognized by renowned magazines, EPICA’s compost bin is a perfectly sized marvel for your kitchen, compact yet spacious enough to hold days' worth of compostable organic waste. Measures 7.16" in diameter x 11" high.
  • CONTROL KITCHEN ODORS NATURALLY: This indoor compost bin with a charcoal filter features an airtight lid and a replaceable activated-charcoal filter to help reduce odors. Enjoy a fresher kitchen with an odor-free compost bucket designed for daily use.
  • EASY TO CLEAN & RESISTANT TO LEAKS: This countertop bin features a one-piece molded design that resists rust and leaks. The container's construction is easy to hand-wash with warm water and is built for everyday convenience. Empty & clean weekly for best results. Rinse the filters and air dry them to extend their life, or replace them (they last 3-6 mo. with regular use). Don't saturate the charcoal filters- gentle rinsing is enough.
  • BUILT TO LAST A LIFETIME: Crafted from premium stainless steel, this stainless steel compost container resists scratches and rust for lasting durability. An ideal compost bin for kitchen counter use that combines style with everyday performance.
  • REPLACEABLE CHARCOAL FILTER FOR ODORLESS COMPOSTING: Activated-charcoal filters help keep this countertop compost bin fresh by reducing odors. With proper care, each filter lasts 3–6 months, making this compost bucket easy to maintain.

Remember that capacity is not the same as a recommended storage period. A large bin can hold more food, but keeping warm, wet scraps indoors longer generally increases odor and pest problems. If your collection point is far away, a removable inner bucket or a freezer-based routine may be more valuable than another liter of capacity.

What we would buy for different kitchens

  • For the cleanest bagged disposal: Joseph Joseph Collect 4L, because the inner bucket can travel outside.
  • For a deliberately bagless routine: Epica, if frequent washing and loose-scrap collection are acceptable.
  • For high-volume cooking: OXO 1.75-gallon, after measuring the counter and confirming the cleaning routine.
  • For a visible family kitchen: Bamboozle Astrik, if it is available and its material-disposal caveat is understood.
  • For an existing Simplehuman station: Simplehuman Compost Caddy, where the magnetic dock justifies the choice.

Availability and buying note

Product prices, stock, model names, and liner availability change. The Bamboozle Astrik was shown as sold out on the manufacturer’s page during research. Joseph Joseph’s U.S. page listed a $55 price at that time, but it should be rechecked before publication or purchase. Filter life, replacement-filter pricing, and current retailer stock should likewise be verified on the current listing.

If this article includes retailer links, they should be treated as a convenience rather than a substitute for checking local composting rules. The most important purchase decision is whether the bin’s liner, capacity, and emptying method match the disposal system you actually use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need compostable bags for a kitchen compost bin?

Not always. Some caddies can be used bagless, and some organics programs accept loose food scraps. Other programs require a secured liner or accept only particular certified compostable bags. Check with your municipality, hauler, or compost provider before buying liners.

Can I put meat or dairy in the caddy?

Only if the destination accepts them. Rules differ among municipal facilities, community services, and backyard compost systems. Keep disputed materials out until you have confirmed the local requirements.

How often should I empty a kitchen compost bin?

Empty it whenever odor or moisture becomes noticeable; for many households that means every day or every couple of days. A smaller bin emptied frequently can be more hygienic than a large bin left full for a week.

Is a kitchen compost bin the same as an electric food recycler?

No. A countertop caddy temporarily stores scraps. An electric food recycler processes food waste inside the appliance, while a bokashi system ferments scraps, a worm bin uses worms, and an outdoor composter produces compost under suitable conditions. They have different costs, maintenance needs, and output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop fruit flies around my compost caddy?

Empty the caddy more frequently, clean residue from the rim and lid, drain wet scraps, keep the container closed, and consider freezing high-odor or fly-attracting scraps until collection. No lid can compensate for food waste sitting too long in warm conditions.

The Bottom Line

The best kitchen compost bin is the one that fits your actual disposal route. Choose the Joseph Joseph for cleaner bagged emptying, the Epica for a genuinely bagless routine, the OXO for capacity and easy maintenance, the Bamboozle for a family-friendly countertop design, or the Simplehuman when its magnetic docking system matches your existing waste setup. Then confirm local rules before adding liners or disputed food scraps.
