Best overall: The AeroGarden Bounty Basic is the strongest all-around indoor garden system in Better Homes & Gardens’ testing because it was simple to use, productive, quiet, and mostly hands-off after setup. But the right system depends on your available space and what you want to grow: choose the inbloom for a lower-cost entry point, the AeroGarden Harvest Elite for herbs, the Click & Grow Smart Garden 3 for very small spaces, or the Lettuce Grow Farmstand if you want a much larger indoor growing installation.
BHG tested 19 indoor gardening systems for 12 weeks in testers’ homes and evaluated setup, growth, maintenance, accessories, seeds, price, smart features, plant problems, and taste. The five systems below are the publication’s selected winners from that testing. Product dimensions and equipment specifications are separated from tester observations where possible, because manufacturer specifications and retail prices can change.
Quick comparison
| System | Best for | Capacity | Lighting and automation | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AeroGarden Bounty Basic | Best overall | 9 plants | 30-watt LED, automated lighting, water and nutrient reminders, vacation mode | Higher upfront cost and a short learning curve for the controls |
| inbloom Hydroponics Growing System | Best budget option | 12 plants | Adjustable LED, automatic light cycle, self-watering tank, low-water alarm | More reliable for basil than for every other plant |
| AeroGarden Harvest Elite | Best for herbs | 6 plants | Automatic lighting and low-water and nutrient alerts | Fast-growing herbs can crowd and shade slower ones |
| Click & Grow Smart Garden 3 | Best for small spaces | 3 plants | Automatic watering and LED schedule | Limited variety when each pod pack contains three of the same plant |
| Lettuce Grow Farmstand | Best large system | 12 plants in the tested Tiny configuration | Self-watering system with LED lighting | Large, heavy, difficult to assemble, and dependent on proprietary seedlings |
Important: Plant capacity is not the same as harvest capacity. Spacing, growth rate, light height, pruning, and shading determine how much usable produce a system can actually provide.

The AeroGarden Bounty Basic was BHG’s best overall indoor garden system and the most convincing choice for someone who wants a productive countertop hydroponic garden without daily involvement. During testing, the system was described as the simplest to use and the most successful at growing. One tester reported not needing to purchase herbs for six months after setting it up.
Setup took approximately 15 minutes. The initial timer and controls were somewhat confusing, but once they were configured, the system was largely hands-off. BHG reported that it was quiet, could go weeks between water or nutrient additions, and mainly required regular trimming because the plants grew vigorously.
#1 Best Overall

Also make a fun gift for all ages from cooks to kids who want to get started growing their own plants
- Growing method: Hydroponic.
- Capacity: Nine plants.
- Light: 30-watt LED grow light.
- Size: 17.25 x 11.25 x 34 inches.
- Convenience features: Automated lighting, water and nutrient reminders, vacation mode, and an adjustable grow height of up to 24 inches.
The Bounty Basic is a good fit if you want several herbs or greens growing at once and would rather receive reminders than maintain a strict manual schedule. It is also the better choice for taller or more vigorous plants than a compact three-pod system, provided you keep trimming and use the adjustable light height effectively.
The trade-offs are the upfront price, reliance on electricity and liquid nutrients, and the fact that “low maintenance” does not mean “no maintenance.” You still need to refill the reservoir, add nutrients as directed, clean the system, prune plants, harvest regularly, and respond to alerts.

2. Best budget option: inbloom Hydroponics Growing System
The inbloom Hydroponics Growing System is BHG’s budget pick for beginners who want an inexpensive, relatively uncomplicated way to grow herbs indoors. Its compact hydroponic design includes a self-watering tank, an adjustable LED grow light, an automatic light cycle, and a low-water alarm.
BHG’s test setup took about 10 minutes. Basil sprouted within seven days and developed into healthy, flavorful plants. Cilantro took longer and did not perform as well, and the testers found the system less effective for plants other than basil. That makes the inbloom a sensible starter garden for a few basic herbs, but not necessarily the best choice if you want to experiment with a wide range of crops.
- Growing method: Hydroponic.
- Capacity: 12 plants.
- Light: Adjustable LED with automatic cycling.
- Size: 15.94 x 6.49 x 6.96 inches.
- Convenience features: Self-watering tank and low-water alarm.
The relatively high pod count looks attractive, but the growing area is still compact. Twelve plants may be too crowded once several varieties mature, particularly if they grow at different rates. The light height also has to be adjusted manually, so you will need to watch plant growth rather than assume the system will accommodate every crop automatically.
Choose the inbloom if your priorities are a low purchase price, simple controls, and basil or other small herbs. Choose the AeroGarden Harvest Elite instead if you care more about a dedicated herb-growing setup with stronger reported performance across several herb varieties.

The AeroGarden Harvest Elite is the most focused recommendation for readers who primarily want fresh herbs rather than a broad indoor crop collection. In BHG’s testing, it performed especially well with Genovese basil, parsley, and Thai basil. Setup took approximately five minutes, and the system automatically managed its lighting while alerting the user when water or nutrients were low.
BHG reported adding nutrients about every two weeks during testing. Most herbs sprouted within their stated time ranges, although parsley was notably slower. As the faster-growing herbs matured, they began shading slower plants, making strategic trimming important.
- Growing method: Hydroponic.
- Capacity: Six plants.
- Light: LED lighting.
- Size: 6.25 x 10.5 x 17.4 inches.
- Convenience features: Automatic lighting and low-water and nutrient alerts.
The Harvest Elite takes up less space than the Bounty Basic and has enough room for a useful selection of culinary herbs. Six plants is also a practical limit for a small countertop: it reduces the temptation to overfill the garden and makes it easier to give each herb enough light.

- High planting efficiency: Start an indoor herb garden with the Ahopegarden hydroponic growing system, which includes a water reservoir, an overhead LED grow light, and a circulation system that keeps the water fresh. The hydroponic setup and lighting systems allow plants to grow up to faster and healthier in controlled conditions. - 14.5 Inches Height-Adjustable Light Post: Our harvest indoor hydroponic garden comes with a bright grow light that can be adjusted in height as the plants grow taller. Plants can grow up to 14.5 inches. What’s more, the grow lights are on a 16-hours-on, 8-hours-off timer. So with an automatic light timer, there’s really not much you have to do to get your plants growing u
- Perfect for Family: This indoor garden plant germination kit is an ideal for families on Christmas and other holidays. This hydroponic growing kit is small enough to fit on the counter in the kitchen, which allows users to grow and vegetables indoors year-round. This indoor planter with grow light really is the that keeps on giving
Its limitations are the six-pod capacity and the continuing cost of compatible seed pods or replacement supplies. Planting fast-growing basil beside parsley or another slower crop also requires occasional pruning to prevent one plant from taking over the light. If you want herbs for cooking and can accept that maintenance, this is the most targeted pick in the group.
4. Best for small spaces: Click & Grow Smart Garden 3
The Click & Grow Smart Garden 3 is the best option for a dorm room, office, apartment, narrow kitchen counter, or any location where a larger garden would be intrusive. It holds only three plants, but its footprint is less than a foot long and approximately five inches wide, making it the easiest system to place in a genuinely small space.
Setup is simple, with automatic watering and an automatic LED schedule. In BHG’s test, basil broke through the soil after five days, fully sprouted after about one week, and produced harvestable leaves after approximately three weeks. The water-level indicator made it clear when the tank needed refilling.
- Capacity: Three plants.
- Water tank: 1.5 liters.
- Power consumption: 8 watts, according to the manufacturer.
- Lighting: Automatic LED schedule.
- Other manufacturer information: Multiple compatible pod varieties and a one-year warranty.
The main issue is variety. BHG found that the included seed-pod packs contain three pods of the same plant, so growing three different varieties at the same time requires multiple packs. That may make the system less economical for someone who wants a mixed herb garden, even though the initial unit is small and easy to operate.
Capacity is the decisive compromise. This is not the system to buy for a household that wants a substantial supply of greens. It is a good choice for growing a small amount of basil, mint, lettuce, flowers, or another compact crop while taking up almost no counter space.
5. Best large system: Lettuce Grow Farmstand
The Lettuce Grow Farmstand is a very different proposition from the four countertop systems. BHG selected it as the best large indoor garden for people who have the room, budget, and commitment for a prominent growing installation. The tested Tiny model is nearly four feet tall, occupies roughly two square feet, and weighs more than 150 pounds when its 20-gallon tank is full.
Assembly and placement were difficult in BHG’s testing. The tester needed an outlet with two open sockets and a nearby water source. Unlike the other systems, the Farmstand did not arrive with seed pods. Users redeem proprietary, non-GMO seedlings that are shipped to their homes. BHG reported that the available selection includes more than 100 vegetables, fruits, greens, herbs, and edible flowers, but also found the seedlings expensive compared with plants from a local garden center.
- Tested configuration: Tiny model.
- Capacity: 12 plants.
- Size: 22 x 44 x 22 inches.
- Tank: 20 gallons.
- Lighting: LED lighting.
- Mobility: A separately sold dolly can make the filled system easier to move.
Plan the Farmstand’s final location before adding water or seedlings. Use a level, water-resistant surface, keep the electrical connections arranged according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and make sure the location has enough clearance for plant growth and maintenance. A filled system is not something you should casually reposition by yourself. If mobility matters, plan for a compatible dolly or rolling support before filling the tank, and verify compatibility with the exact model.
The Farmstand is appealing if you want an indoor garden to function as a significant source of greens and herbs—or as a visible design feature in a large room. It is excessive for someone who only wants occasional basil. The installation difficulty, filled weight, footprint, proprietary seedling supply, and recurring cost are all part of the purchase decision.

How BHG tested the indoor garden systems
BHG reported testing 19 indoor gardening systems for 12 weeks in testers’ homes. Testers evaluated setup difficulty, plant growth, maintenance, included accessories and seeds, price, problems with the plants or system, and whether each garden continued to meet expectations by the end of the test.
For systems with apps, testers connected the gardens and assessed app setup, smart settings, and ease of use. Systems with grow lights were tested away from windows so the testers could evaluate the systems’ lighting capabilities. Systems without grow lights were placed near a window when possible. To make results more comparable, testers used identical basil seed packs in systems that did not include seeds.
Testers also attempted to keep temperature and humidity consistent, measured seedlings at three and six weeks, and conducted taste tests. These were home tests rather than laboratory yield trials, so the results should be understood as practical observations under the reported conditions—not proof that every plant variety will perform identically in every home.
Hydroponic versus soil indoor gardens
Hydroponic systems grow plants in water and soilless media rather than conventional potting soil. That generally creates a cleaner, more compact setup and avoids loose soil on the counter. Most of the systems in this roundup use hydroponic growing, while the Click & Grow Smart Garden 3 uses a proprietary pod-based growing medium.
BHG reported that its hydroponic systems performed better than the soil systems included in its testing period, while the soil systems required more ongoing attention. That does not mean hydroponics always produces larger harvests or that soil is unsuitable indoors. Soil can have a lower initial cost, but buyers commonly need to supply a suitable grow light, seeds, and growing medium separately.
Srijana Shrestha, an assistant professor of practice with the Metro Master Gardener Program, told BHG that indoor garden systems support year-round cultivation, conserve space, and can use substantially less water than traditional soil gardening. That water-efficiency point is expert guidance reported by BHG, not an independently verified water-use measurement from this product test.
What can you grow indoors?
Match the plant to the system rather than choosing a garden solely by pod count. Herbs, leafy greens, and microgreens are generally the safest choices for indoor systems because they are compact and can be harvested repeatedly.
- Good starting choices: Basil, parsley, Thai basil, leafy greens, lettuce, and microgreens.
- More demanding choices: Cherry tomatoes and dwarf cucumbers may work, but they need adequate light, space, and physical support.
- Plants to approach cautiously: Large, sprawling, or aggressively growing varieties that can outgrow a small light arm or shade neighboring plants.
Proprietary-pod and proprietary-seedling systems also limit the practical range of plants to what the manufacturer offers. Before buying, check whether the brand’s available varieties match what you actually want to eat. A three-pod system can be excellent for one favorite herb but frustrating if you want three different plants immediately.

What to check before buying
1. Measure the complete installation
Record the available width, depth, and height, including clearance above the light arm. Do not measure only the reservoir. Tall plants can need additional vertical room, and a large unit may need access from more than one side for refilling, cleaning, pruning, and harvesting.

2. Decide whether you need a countertop or floor system
The Bounty Basic, inbloom, Harvest Elite, and Smart Garden 3 are intended for compact placement. The Farmstand is a floor-standing installation that demands a dedicated location. Its full tank weighs more than 150 pounds in the tested configuration, so placement is a structural and logistical decision as well as a gardening decision.
3. Separate automation from maintenance-free operation
Automatic lights, self-watering, low-water alerts, nutrient reminders, adjustable light arms, and vacation modes reduce routine work. They do not eliminate cleaning, trimming, harvesting, monitoring, or troubleshooting. Vigorous growth can create more pruning work, not less.
4. Account for recurring supplies
Some systems include starter seeds or pods, but ongoing growing can require compatible pods, seedlings, nutrients, or replacement parts. The Bounty Basic includes a seed kit and liquid nutrients, while the Farmstand uses proprietary seedlings shipped to the user. The Smart Garden 3’s same-variety pod packs can also mean buying more than one pack to create a mixed planting.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Check the electrical and water location
Every powered indoor garden needs a suitable outlet and careful water handling. The Farmstand tester needed an outlet with two open sockets and a nearby water source. Follow the product manual’s electrical instructions, keep the unit on a stable level surface, and avoid placing water reservoirs where a spill could damage electronics, flooring, or cabinetry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setup and maintenance checklist
- Choose the final location first. Confirm the footprint, height, outlet access, water access, and clearance for the mature plants.
- Follow the included planting instructions. Do not assume all pods, seeds, nutrients, or growing media are interchangeable between brands.
- Set the light schedule correctly. A misconfigured timer can undermine otherwise healthy plants. The Bounty Basic’s initial controls were confusing to the tester, so verify the schedule after setup.
- Watch the water level. Use the system’s alert or indicator, but also inspect the reservoir rather than waiting for plants to wilt.
- Add nutrients only as directed. More fertilizer is not automatically better. Use the product’s recommended nutrient and dosage instructions.
- Trim early and regularly. Fast-growing basil and other herbs can shade slower plants. Pruning helps maintain light access and keeps the garden from becoming crowded.
- Harvest routinely. Regular harvesting creates space for new growth and is especially important in a small six- or nine-pod garden.
- Clean the system on the manufacturer’s schedule. Remove plant debris and follow the manual for reservoir, pump, pod, and growing-medium care.
- Keep expectations crop-specific. Basil may germinate quickly while parsley or cilantro takes longer. A slower plant is not necessarily a failed plant.
Common problems and practical fixes
One plant is shading the others
Trim the dominant plant and harvest it rather than allowing it to block the light. If the light arm is adjustable, raise or reposition it only within the manufacturer’s recommended range. Planting varieties with similar growth rates together can also reduce crowding.
Seeds have not sprouted on the same schedule
Do not judge every variety by basil’s timeline. BHG observed quick basil germination but slower parsley and cilantro performance. Check the seed or pod instructions, confirm that the growing medium remains appropriately moist, and give slower varieties time within their expected germination range.
The garden is asking for water or nutrients frequently
Fast-growing plants and warm, dry indoor conditions can increase consumption. Refill and feed according to the system’s instructions, and inspect for leaks or unusually rapid depletion. Do not disable alerts simply because the system is still growing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The system is crowded despite its advertised capacity
Capacity counts planting positions, not mature plant volume. Remove weak or unwanted plants if necessary, prune aggressively growing herbs, and choose compact varieties for smaller systems. A three-plant system may be more usable when three plants have room to mature than when every opening is filled with a sprawling crop.
The large system needs to be moved
Do not treat a full Farmstand like a lightweight planter. Plan the route and final location before filling it. A separately sold dolly may help, but confirm that it is designed for the exact Farmstand configuration and weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are indoor garden systems worth it?
They can be worthwhile if you value year-round herbs or greens, limited mess, and automated lighting or watering. They are less appealing if you want the lowest possible ongoing cost, a wide range of plant varieties, or a garden that requires no maintenance at all. Every system still needs water, nutrients, cleaning, pruning, and harvesting.
What is the best indoor garden system for beginners?
The AeroGarden Bounty Basic is the best general beginner choice in BHG’s testing because it was productive and mostly hands-off after setup. The inbloom is a better budget choice, while the Click & Grow Smart Garden 3 is easier to fit into a very small space.
Do indoor hydroponic gardens use less water than soil gardens?
Srijana Shrestha of the Metro Master Gardener Program told BHG that indoor systems can use substantially less water than traditional soil gardening. That is expert guidance rather than a water-use measurement independently verified by BHG’s product test, so actual savings will depend on the system, crop, environment, and maintenance.
Can I grow tomatoes or cucumbers in these systems?
Compact cherry tomatoes and dwarf cucumbers may work when the system provides enough light, growing room, and support. Herbs, leafy greens, and microgreens are generally easier choices. Check the manufacturer’s plant list and the available vertical clearance before selecting a fruiting crop.
Do indoor garden systems require special seed pods or nutrients?
Some do. The AeroGarden and Click & Grow systems use compatible pods or growing supplies, and the Lettuce Grow Farmstand uses proprietary seedlings shipped to the user. Verify exact compatibility before buying replacement pods, nutrients, or seedlings; supplies are not automatically interchangeable across brands.
How much maintenance does an automated indoor garden need?
Automation reduces routine work but does not eliminate it. Expect to refill water, add nutrients, clean the reservoir and growing components, prune vigorous plants, harvest regularly, and respond to low-water or nutrient alerts.
The Bottom Line
Choose the AeroGarden Bounty Basic for the best all-around countertop experience, the inbloom for a lower-cost basil-focused start, the Harvest Elite for herbs, the Click & Grow Smart Garden 3 for the smallest counter, and the Lettuce Grow Farmstand only if you are prepared for a large, heavy, higher-commitment installation. The most important choice is not the advertised plant count—it is whether the system’s footprint, light, plant supply, and maintenance demands match your home and growing goals.
