Best overall guidance: buy a 3-hp-class router when your work regularly includes deep mortises, large raised-panel or edge-profile bits, heavy rabbets and dados, template routing, or production work in a router table. For a table-centered shop, the Triton TRA001 has the clearest documented integration story. For conventional heavy-duty plunge routing, the Makita RP2301FC and DEWALT DWE625 are current manufacturer-documented alternatives.
These are not equivalent laboratory horsepower ratings. DEWALT calls the DWE625 a “3 peak HP” router, Makita rates the RP2301FC at 3-1/4 HP, and Triton describes the TRA001 as a 2400W/3-1/4 HP router. Compare the motor, speed control, plunge mechanism, collets, adjustment system, intended mounting method, and local voltage—not the horsepower number alone.

That conclusion needs one important qualification: these are not equivalent laboratory horsepower ratings. DEWALT calls the DWE625 a “3 peak HP” router, Makita rates the RP2301FC at 3-1/4 HP, and Triton describes the TRA001 as a 2400W/3-1/4 HP router. Older products use still different language. What a 3-hp router is actually for
A 3-hp-class router is a heavy-duty corded woodworking machine designed to remove a great deal of material without excessive bogging. Its extra motor capacity and physical mass are useful when a smaller router would require more passes, slower feed rates, or repeated work.

The applications that best justify one include:
- Deep mortises: especially when a wide, deep mortise must be cut efficiently and accurately.
- Raised panels: large panel bits remove substantial material and are commonly used in a router table.
- Large edge profiles: ogees, roundovers, and similar profiles benefit from a motor with enough reserve power for a controlled feed rate.
- Dados and rabbets: repeated joinery cuts become less demanding when the router maintains speed under load.
- Template routing: the extra plunge travel and 1/2-inch-shank bit compatibility available on many models suit substantial template work.
- Router-table production: a fixed installation can take advantage of the motor’s capacity while avoiding the fatigue of holding a large tool for long periods.
More power does not automatically produce a cleaner cut. Sharp, suitable bits, correct speed, a stable workpiece, dust control, and a sensible feed rate still determine much of the result. A large router can remove material quickly, but it can also make a mistake more quickly and with greater force.
What published testing found
The strongest evidence in this comparison comes from historical published tests, not a new hands-on test conducted for this article. That distinction matters: the results show how heavy-duty routers performed in those reported tests, but they are not a guarantee of current production, availability, or every individual machine’s performance.

WOOD Magazine tested seven plunge routers and two fixed-base routers in handheld and router-table applications. The work included deep mortises, rabbets, edge profiles, and a full raised-panel profile cut in one pass. WOOD reported that none of the tested routers bogged down enough to become a concern during those demanding cuts.
Fine Woodworking tested eight heavy-duty plunge routers, including the Bosch 1619EVS, DEWALT DW625, Festool OF2200, Freud FT3000VCE, Hitachi M12V2, Makita RP2301FC, Porter-Cable 7539, and Triton TRA001. The test examined waste removal in hard-maple mortises and cut quality on cherry roundover and ogee profiles. Every router reportedly had enough power to cut a 1-inch-deep by 1/2-inch-wide by 3-inch-long mortise in one pass, and the reported cut quality was not a problem.
Those results support the general case for this class of tool: demanding cuts are primarily a question of control, bit choice, and handling rather than whether the motor can stay running. They do not establish that one current model is universally better than another, and the tested models, specifications, and market status have changed.
Horsepower labels are not directly comparable
| Router | Manufacturer’s terminology | What to notice |
|---|---|---|
| DEWALT DWE625 | 3 peak HP | 15-amp motor, 9,000–22,000 RPM, plunge design |
| Makita RP2301FC | 3-1/4 HP | 15-amp motor, 9,000–22,000 RPM, 2-3/4-inch plunge capacity |
| Triton TRA001 | 2400W/3-1/4 HP | Dual-mode plunge/fixed-base design with table-height adjustment |
| Milwaukee 5625-20 | 3-1/2 max HP | Discontinued fixed-base production router |
“Peak HP,” “maximum HP,” wattage, and a manufacturer’s stated horsepower are different ways of describing motor capability. They should not be treated as standardized continuous-output measurements. A router’s real usefulness depends on how its electronics deliver power, how well it maintains speed, how the base controls depth, and whether its design suits handheld or table use.

Triton TRA001: best for a router-table-centered shop
The Triton TRA001 is a 2400W/3-1/4 HP dual-mode plunge router. It can switch between plunge and fixed-base operation and includes soft start, variable speed, 1/4- and 1/2-inch collets, and a built-in mechanism for router-table height adjustment.
Its strongest selling point is installation flexibility. Triton says the built-in lift and table-height winder can remove the need for a separate aftermarket lifting mechanism in compatible installations. Triton also identifies its TWX7RT001 router-table module as compatible with the TRA001.
This makes the TRA001 especially interesting for a shop that expects to move between handheld plunge work and a dedicated table. It is not proof of universal compatibility, however. Before buying, verify the table opening, insert plate or mounting arrangement, bolt pattern, lift access, included hardware, and regional voltage. “Compatible with a Triton module” does not mean that every router table accepts the router without modification.

Makita lists the RP2301FC as a 3-1/4 HP plunge router with a 15-amp motor, variable speed from 9,000 to 22,000 RPM, 2-3/4 inches of plunge capacity, electronic speed control, an electric brake, and both 1/4- and 1/2-inch collets.
This is the straightforward choice for a reader who wants a conventional heavy-duty plunge router rather than a machine selected primarily for integrated table adjustment. Its documented plunge capacity is useful for deep mortises, template work, and operations where the bit must enter the work gradually. Micro-control depth adjustment is also important here: when a cut has to be repeated accurately, the adjustment system matters at least as much as the motor rating.
The RP2301FC’s specification sheet establishes its capacity and features; it does not, by itself, prove that it will outperform the DEWALT or Triton in every cut. Choose it when plunge travel, speed control, electric braking, and two-collet compatibility fit your work and accessories.
DEWALT DWE625: current 3 peak HP plunge option
The DEWALT DWE625 is a corded 3 peak HP electronic variable-speed plunge router. DEWALT documents a 15-amp motor, a 9,000–22,000 RPM no-load speed range, soft start, a three-stage adjustable turret, micro-fine height adjustment, spindle-lock bit changes, 1/4- and 1/2-inch collets, LED lighting, and dust-extraction compatibility through DEWALT AirLock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIts feature set makes it a strong option for a user who wants a current heavy-duty plunge machine with clearly documented depth controls and convenient bit changes. The three-stage turret can help when a deep cut is best approached in stages, while micro-fine adjustment supports repeatable depth setting.
As with the Makita, do not read “3 peak HP” as an exact equivalent of another brand’s 3-1/4 HP or 3-1/2 max HP claim. Compare the complete tool and the work you intend to do. If you already use DEWALT AirLock extraction equipment, the documented adapter compatibility may also simplify dust collection.
Milwaukee 5625-20: historically relevant, not a default current buy
Milwaukee described the 5625-20 as a 3-1/2 max HP fixed-base production router with a 15-amp motor, 10,000–22,000 RPM electronic variable speed, soft start, feedback circuitry, and above-table linear height adjustment. Milwaukee’s official information also states that the product is no longer available.
The 5625-20 remains useful in a comparison because it illustrates why fixed-base production routers appeal to router-table users: above-table adjustment and a production-oriented design can be more valuable than plunge capability when the machine will live under a table.

It should not be presented as a normal current recommendation. Anyone considering one on the used market should verify the machine’s condition, collets, adjustment mechanism, power cord, replacement-parts situation, and seller reliability. A low used price is not a bargain if the table-adjustment mechanism is damaged or essential parts are unavailable.
Handheld plunge router or router-table machine?
A 3-hp router can serve both roles, but handheld and table-mounted use reward different design choices.
| Choose handheld plunge use when… | Choose table-mounted use when… |
|---|---|
| You cut deep mortises or stopped dados. | You make repeated edge profiles. |
| You use templates or need to start a cut inside a workpiece. | You use large raised-panel or cope-and-stick bits. |
| Plunge travel and staged depth adjustment are priorities. | Fence control, repeatability, and above-table adjustment matter most. |
| You need to bring the tool to large or awkward workpieces. | You can safely support smaller workpieces against a stable table and fence. |
The mass of a large router can help stabilize a demanding handheld cut, but that same mass makes freehand edge work tiring and less maneuverable. For occasional edge trimming, a smaller router may be easier to control. For long, heavy cuts, the table can carry the machine’s weight—but it introduces its own requirements: a rigid mounting system, suitable insert opening, reliable fence, guarded bit access, and dust extraction.
For a table-focused installation, investigate a router table for a 3-1/4 HP router or a compatible insert plate, fence, module, or lift. Verify the router’s mounting pattern, table opening, plate thickness, height-adjustment access, and voltage before ordering. The Triton TRA001 and TWX7RT001 relationship is documented by Triton, but compatibility is not universal across brands.

Features that matter more than the horsepower badge
Variable speed
Large-diameter bits generally require more deliberate speed selection than small edge-profile bits. The larger the cutter, the more important it is to follow the bit manufacturer’s maximum RPM guidance rather than simply running the router at full speed.
Fine Woodworking identified variable speed as important on high-torque 3-hp routers. Both the DEWALT DWE625 and Makita RP2301FC document a 9,000–22,000 RPM range. The Triton TRA001 also provides variable speed. Use a lower setting for an appropriate large bit, then make a controlled test cut in scrap before committing to the workpiece.
Soft start
A large router can twist sharply when switched on. Soft start reduces the abrupt torque reaction and gives the operator time to settle the tool before the cutter reaches operating speed. Fine Woodworking specifically identified soft start as important for managing the torque of this class of router; DEWALT and Triton document soft-start features on the models discussed here.
Plunge travel and depth adjustment
For deep mortises and template routing, plunge capacity and adjustment design can matter more than a small difference in horsepower terminology. The Makita RP2301FC lists 2-3/4 inches of plunge capacity and micro-control depth adjustment. DEWALT lists a micro-fine depth-stop adjuster and a three-stage turret on the DWE625.

Look for a plunge action that remains smooth under the router’s weight, a depth stop that locks securely, and a mechanism that can be read and adjusted without awkward repositioning. If a job requires a deep cut, make multiple passes unless the bit and material genuinely support a one-pass operation.
Collet size
Bit compatibility is a practical buying criterion. The DEWALT DWE625, Makita RP2301FC, and Triton TRA001 documentation identifies both 1/4- and 1/2-inch collet support. The 1/2-inch option is particularly important for many large-profile, raised-panel, and heavy-duty bits because it matches the shank size those cutters commonly use.
Use the correct collet for the bit, insert the shank to the manufacturer’s specified depth, and inspect both the collet and bit for damage. Never compensate for an incompatible shank with an improvised adapter.
Electronic speed control, braking, and bit changes
Electronic feedback or speed control helps a router maintain a selected speed as the load changes. An electric brake can reduce coast-down time after switching off. Spindle locks or other designed bit-change systems can make setup more convenient, but they do not replace unplugging the tool before maintenance or changing a bit.
Bits and accessories that solve real problems
Match the bit to the operation
The documented applications—raised panels, mortises, rabbets, dados, ogees, and roundovers—each call for a suitable cutter. A generic “router accessory kit” is less useful than buying the correct bit with the correct shank, diameter, cutting length, and bearing arrangement for the job.
- Use a raised-panel router bit only with a setup that safely supports the large cutter, typically a rigid router table and appropriate speed setting.
- For deep joinery, choose a suitable mortising router bit and plan the cut depth, chip clearance, and number of passes.
- For repeatable edge work, select a roundover, ogee, rabbeting, or straight bit sized for the stock and bearing or fence arrangement.
- When buying a set, prioritize sharp, accurately ground 1/2-inch-shank router bits for the work you actually do.
Fine Woodworking used new Whiteside bits in its comparison to reduce the possibility that worn or inconsistent cutters would dominate the results. That is a useful lesson for buyers: a powerful router cannot compensate for a dull, damaged, poorly balanced, or inappropriate bit. If you want a recognized cutter line for demanding work, consider Whiteside router bits, while still checking the exact diameter, shank, cutting length, and recommended RPM.
Template guides
Template routing is one of the jobs that benefits from a substantial plunge router, but guide-bush compatibility must be checked carefully. Triton’s TGA001 documentation describes a TRA001 template-guide kit with multiple guide-bush sizes, a guide plate, and a Porter-Cable adaptor.
If you own a TRA001, a TRA001 template-guide kit can be a logical accessory for template work, provided the regional product configuration and base arrangement match the documentation. Do not assume a guide bush from one brand will fit another router without the correct plate or adaptor.
Dust extraction
Heavy routing produces a substantial volume of chips and fine dust. DEWALT documents a dust-extraction adapter and AirLock compatibility for the DWE625. Triton also documents dust-extraction provisions for its router and table ecosystem.
For a shop setup, use a router dust collection adapter, appropriately sized hose, or compatible shop vacuum for a router table. Match the hose and adapter to the router base, table module, and vacuum inlet; a general-purpose vacuum connection may not fit or provide effective chip capture. Extraction improves visibility and housekeeping, but it does not eliminate the need for suitable respiratory and eye protection.

Safety checks before using a 3-hp router
Large routers deserve a more deliberate setup than a small trim router. Secure the workpiece, use the correct bit and collet, set the speed for the cutter diameter, keep both hands on the intended handles, and make sure the bit is fully stopped before setting the tool down. On a router table, use a suitable fence, guard, featherboards where appropriate, and push devices that keep hands away from the cutter.
Used Porter-Cable safety check: PORTER-CABLE issued a notice about a shock hazard involving certain 3-1/4 HP models and bases with uninsulated gripping surfaces, particularly affected date codes before 2014. The notice instructed users of affected products to stop using them and contact the company for a replacement base.
This does not mean that every Porter-Cable 7518 or 7519 is unsafe. Before using any used production router, verify the exact model, base, date code, handle insulation, cord condition, collet condition, plunge or height-adjustment operation, and parts availability. If the configuration falls within the official notice, stop using it until the prescribed remedy has been completed.
How to choose
- Start with the work. If you mainly trim laminate, round over small edges, or make occasional shallow dados, a 3-hp router is probably unnecessary. If you routinely use large bits, cut deep mortises, or run a router table, continue.
- Decide where the router will spend most of its time. Choose a plunge-oriented design for handheld mortises and templates; choose table integration or fixed-base adjustment for repeated production profiles.
- Confirm bit requirements. Check that the router accepts the shank sizes and cutter diameters your jobs require. The three current models discussed here document 1/4- and 1/2-inch collets.
- Compare depth control. Examine plunge travel, turret stops, micro-adjustment, locking, and visibility—not just motor output.
- Plan the installation. For table use, verify the plate, opening, bolt pattern, height adjustment, fence, guard, and dust-extraction arrangement before purchase.
- Check regional details. Confirm voltage, plug, warranty, included accessories, current availability, and local service support. Specifications and model configurations can vary by market.
Bottom line
A 3-hp-class router is justified by demanding work, not by the number printed on the box. Published tests from WOOD Magazine and Fine Woodworking found that heavy-duty routers handled deep mortises and large profiles without concerning bog-down in the reported tests, but control, cutter quality, and setup remain decisive.
Choose the Triton TRA001 when router-table integration is central and your table installation is confirmed compatible. Choose the Makita RP2301FC when you want a conventional heavy-duty plunge router with substantial plunge capacity and two-collet support. Choose the DEWALT DWE625 when its plunge controls, soft start, variable speed, lighting, and documented AirLock compatibility suit your shop. Treat the Milwaukee 5625-20 as a discontinued historical or used-market reference, and perform the specific model/date-code check before using an older Porter-Cable production router.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs a 3-hp router?
A 3-hp-class router is worthwhile for deep mortises, raised-panel profiles, large edge profiles, heavy rabbets and dados, template routing, and frequent router-table work. It is usually excessive for light trimming and small edge profiles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which 3-hp router is best for a router table?
The Triton TRA001 has the clearest table-use angle because Triton documents dual-mode plunge/fixed-base operation and built-in table-height adjustment. Confirm compatibility with the specific table, insert plate, voltage, and regional configuration.
Are 3-hp ratings directly comparable between brands?
No. DEWALT uses “3 peak HP,” Makita uses 3-1/4 HP, and Triton uses 2400W/3-1/4 HP. These labels are not necessarily equivalent output measurements, so compare the complete specifications and intended use.
What should I check before buying a used Porter-Cable production router?
Check the exact model, base, date code, handle insulation, cord, collet, adjustment mechanism, and parts availability. PORTER-CABLE issued a safety notice for specified 3-1/4 HP configurations and date codes, not every router in the product family.
