Short answer: The Lodge Chef Collection cast iron grill pan is the strongest choice for high-heat searing, durable construction, and pronounced grill marks. Choose Jean Patrique The Whatever Pan if versatility and a lid matter more, Calphalon’s 11-inch square grill pan for easier nonstick cooking, Staub’s Enameled Cast Iron Pure Grill for premium enameled cast iron, or Anolon’s Advanced Home 11-inch Deep Square Grill Pan for a lower-cost nonstick option.
This guide is an evidence-led synthesis of current and independent testing—not a claim of first-hand testing by the writer. The most current directly relevant program found was Food Network Kitchen’s article updated February 5, 2026, which tested nine pans. Serious Eats, America’s Test Kitchen, TechGearLab, and manufacturer specifications provide additional context.
The best grill pans of 2026 at a glance
| Pick | Best for | Material | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lodge Chef Collection | High-heat searing, strong grill marks, and long-term value | Raw cast iron | Heavy and requires hand washing, drying, and oiling |
| Jean Patrique The Whatever Pan | Overall versatility, covered cooking, and stovetop-to-oven use | Die-cast aluminum with bonded steel base | Handles become very hot, and availability is volatile |
| Calphalon Premier Hard-Anodized Nonstick | Delicate food, quick cooking, and easier cleanup | Hard-anodized aluminum with nonstick coating | Not induction-compatible according to the current product information, and high heat can shorten nonstick performance |
| Staub Enameled Cast Iron Pure Grill | Premium enameled cast iron | Enameled cast iron | Expensive and heavy; exact model specifications should be confirmed before buying |
| Anolon Advanced Home Deep Square Grill Pan | Budget nonstick cooking and splatter control | Hard-anodized aluminum with nonstick coating | 400°F oven limit, no induction compatibility, and hand-wash care |
There is no single universal winner because the materials solve different problems. Cast iron holds heat and creates more forceful searing, while nonstick is generally more forgiving with fish and faster to clean. Enameled cast iron reduces the seasoning routine but keeps much of cast iron’s weight. Deeper aluminum pans add versatility, splatter control, and—in Jean Patrique’s case—a lid.

How these grill pans were evaluated
Food Network Kitchen purchased nine grill pans covering cast iron, nonstick, cast aluminum, and ceramic surfaces. Its testers cooked salmon, burgers, and white bread, while recording sticking, grill-mark quality, cooking time, instructions, warranty information, weight, side height, and cleanup. That program is the basis for four of the five category recommendations here.
Two older independent programs help explain why the results differ by material. Serious Eats tested seven grill pans with grilled cheese, butterflied chicken breast, burgers, and cleanup. It selected the Lodge Chef Collection 11-inch Cast Iron Square Grill Pan because the ridges were high enough to lift fatty food above rendered drippings without making cooking uneven.

America’s Test Kitchen also identifies the Lodge Chef Collection Cast Iron Grill Pan as its winner. Its listed price was $47.95 when accessed, but that is a historical price snapshot rather than a current price promise.

Its program measured heat distribution and heat-up time, then tested pork chops, ahi tuna, bread, squash, and peaches both with and without oil. It named the GreenPan Prime Midnight Nonstick 11-Inch its best overall in its 2023 test, found that Lodge cast iron retained heat especially evenly, and reported that both Lodge pans and Nutrichef produced defined grill marks. The GreenPan was not included in this five-pan shortlist because the current 2026 evidence used here favored the listed recommendations, not because TechGearLab’s result is invalid.
Because these programs used different pans, recipes, cooking surfaces, scoring systems, and dates, their winners should not be treated as the results of one standardized head-to-head test. The recommendations below are a triangulated editorial shortlist.
1. Lodge Chef Collection Cast Iron Grill Pan: best for high-heat searing and value
Best for: steak, burgers, chicken, vegetables, panini, and buyers who want a durable pan that can last for years.
For high-heat cooking, the Lodge Chef Collection cast iron grill pan is the most defensible choice in this group. Serious Eats named the 11-inch square model its winner, and America’s Test Kitchen reached a similar conclusion. Both programs valued the ridge design: the ridges are high enough to lift burgers and other fatty foods above their drippings, yet not so tall that they prevent reasonably even cooking.
That balance matters. Very shallow ridges may leave food sitting in grease, while extremely tall ridges can reduce contact and create patchy cooking. Lodge’s design aims for visible stripes without completely sacrificing the hot cooking surface between them.
- Construction: raw cast iron with natural vegetable-oil seasoning.
- Size and weight: 11 inches wide and approximately 7.04 pounds, according to Lodge’s product information.
- Cooking compatibility: induction and other stovetops, plus use in the oven, on a grill, or over a campfire.
- Performance evidence: strong consensus for heat retention, searing, and defined grill marks across the Serious Eats, America’s Test Kitchen, and TechGearLab findings.
What to watch out for
The same mass that helps Lodge retain heat also makes it substantially heavier than aluminum or nonstick alternatives. Raw cast iron also needs more routine care: hand-wash it, dry it promptly, and apply a light coating of oil as directed by the manufacturer. Delicate fish can stick more readily than it would on a good nonstick surface, particularly if the pan is not properly preheated or maintained.
Food Network Kitchen’s material guidance likewise identifies cast iron as the stronger high-heat choice while noting its greater sticking risk with delicate foods. If you want firmer contact on burgers or sandwiches, America’s Test Kitchen specifically recommends pairing the pan with a Lodge grill press; it is an optional accessory, not a requirement.
2. Jean Patrique The Whatever Pan: best overall versatility
Best for: cooks who want a grill pan that can also cover food, braise, roast, and move from the stovetop into the oven.

- About Lodge Cast Iron: Lodge seasoned cast iron cookware is versatile and as easy to clean as it is to cook with; taste a difference in your cooking with cast iron
Food Network Kitchen named Jean Patrique’s The Whatever Pan its best overall after comparing it with eight other grill pans. In that test, it delivered the strongest combination of salmon release and grill marks. That is a particularly useful result because salmon is more demanding than a sturdy burger: it can stick, tear, or lose its surface before it has browned.
The pan’s feature set is broader than a typical shallow square grill pan. It has a 10.6-inch cooking diameter, 1.8-inch sides, a glass lid, a bonded steel base, and relatively light die-cast-aluminum construction. Jean Patrique lists the weight at 4.2 pounds with the lid—considerably less than the Lodge pan itself.
- Cooktops: listed as compatible with all cooktops, including induction.
- Oven rating: Food Network lists 480°F; Jean Patrique’s product page gives 250°C, or 482°F.
- Design: deeper sides, a glass lid, and a wide cooking area make it more useful for covered or one-pan meals than a traditional shallow grill pan.
- Test result: Food Network reported excellent salmon release paired with strong grill marks.
What to watch out for
The integrated metal handles become extremely hot, so use oven mitts or suitable silicone protection whenever the pan has been heated. Also check availability immediately before purchasing. Jean Patrique’s product page showed the pan as sold out when accessed, and stock can differ by country and retailer.
The manufacturer uses “non-toxic” language in its product marketing. That should be treated as a manufacturer claim, not as an independently verified safety finding from the cited test program.
3. Calphalon Premier Hard-Anodized Nonstick 11-Inch Square Grill Pan: best nonstick option
Best for: weeknight meals, delicate fish, lighter handling, and cooks who value food release and straightforward cleanup over maximum-heat searing.
Food Network Kitchen named this Calphalon its best nonstick grill pan. Its tester found that the pan heated quickly, cooked salmon and burgers evenly, and produced some grill marks without the bulk of cast iron. The 11-inch square surface offers useful room for multiple portions, while the long handle and 1.5-inch sides make it easier to maneuver than a heavy iron pan.
The current Calphalon product information identifies model RBT1111S. It describes a 3.1-pound hard-anodized aluminum pan with a three-layer MineralShield nonstick interior and a stainless-steel handle.
- Oven rating: 450°F.
- Stovetops: listed for gas, electric, and glass-top stoves. The product page does not claim induction compatibility, so induction owners should not assume it will work.
- Care: the exterior is listed as dishwasher-safe, while Food Network’s testing emphasized easy hand cleanup.
- Warranty: lifetime warranty according to the current product information.
- Materials: Calphalon discloses PTFE in the product materials.
What to watch out for
Nonstick is not the right material for aggressive maximum-heat searing. Food Network warns that excessive heat can reduce nonstick performance. Preheat enough to cook effectively, but follow the manufacturer’s directions rather than treating this pan like a cast-iron skillet.

4. Staub Enameled Cast Iron Pure Grill: best premium enameled cast iron
Best for: cooks who want cast iron’s heat retention and a polished, premium finish without routine seasoning of the cooking surface.
Food Network Kitchen selected Staub’s Enameled Cast Iron Pure Grill as its best cast-iron option in the 2026 test. Staub describes the Pure Grill as enameled cast iron designed for heat retention and even heating, supporting high-heat stovetop grilling.
Enameled cast iron occupies a middle ground. It remains heavy and retains heat like cast iron, but the enamel surface removes the routine seasoning step associated with raw cast iron. It is also a more giftable, finished-looking piece for a kitchen where appearance matters.
Do not assume every premium grill has identical specifications
Exact model details matter. For category context, a closely related official Le Creuset square-grill specification lists no seasoning requirement, high ridges, pour spouts, compatibility with all cooktops, oven safety to 500°F, dishwasher compatibility, and a limited lifetime warranty. Those specifications illustrate what some premium enameled-cast-iron grills offer; they should not be attributed to the Staub Pure Grill unless the exact Staub model page confirms them.
The trade-offs are premium pricing, substantial weight, and care requirements around thermal shock and abrasive treatment. “Easier than raw cast iron” does not mean immune to damage, and enameled cast iron should not be assumed to perform identically to seasoned raw cast iron.
5. Anolon Advanced Home 11-Inch Deep Square Grill Pan: best budget nonstick buy
Best for: shoppers who want a lighter, deeper-sided nonstick pan with raised ridges and pour spouts at a lower cost than premium cookware.
Food Network Kitchen named the Anolon Advanced Home its best budget buy after testing it among nine pans. The manufacturer lists hard-anodized aluminum construction, Infinity Slide nonstick, raised ridges, pour spouts, and an 11-inch square profile. Anolon also says the square shape provides 27% more cooking surface than a comparable round profile; that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement reported by the cited test programs.

- Oven rating: 400°F.
- Induction: not compatible.
- Cleaning: hand wash; the manufacturer says not to use a dishwasher.
- Warranty: limited lifetime warranty.
- Shape: deeper sides can help contain splatter and provide more room for thicker food, but they make the cooking experience less open than a shallow cast-iron grill pan.
The Anolon is the practical choice when you want nonstick release and easier handling but do not need the Calphalon’s higher oven limit. Its 400°F ceiling is well below the heat tolerance associated with raw cast iron, so it should be treated as a convenience-focused pan rather than a maximum-searing tool.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right grill pan
Choose raw cast iron for heat retention and durability
Raw cast iron is the best fit when you want a pan that can hold a high, steady temperature and produce bold grill marks. It is also the most durable and versatile material in this group: the Lodge is specified for stovetops, ovens, grills, and campfires. The cost is weight and maintenance.
Choose nonstick for release and cleanup
Nonstick aluminum makes the most sense for delicate fish, quick weeknight cooking, and anyone who does not want to lift or maintain a seven-pound pan. Calphalon is the stronger tested fit here, while Anolon offers a deeper, lower-priced route. Both require more restraint around heat than cast iron.
Choose enameled cast iron to reduce seasoning work
Enameled cast iron gives you much of cast iron’s thermal behavior without routine seasoning. It is a premium choice, not a lightweight or automatically effortless one. Confirm the exact model’s induction, oven, dishwasher, warranty, and care specifications before ordering.
Choose a deeper aluminum pan for versatility and splatter control
Deeper sides are useful when you want to contain fat or cover food. Jean Patrique offers the broadest feature set because it adds a glass lid and a higher oven rating, while Anolon offers a simpler nonstick alternative. The compromise is that deeper walls can make it harder to turn food and can reduce the open, grill-like feel of a shallow pan.
Cookware details that matter more than the label
Ridges and grill marks
Grill marks depend on more than the number of ridges. Their height, spacing, the pan’s heat retention, the food’s moisture, and whether the food is moved all affect the result. Serious Eats found Lodge’s ridge height useful because it lifted fatty food above drippings without creating uneven cooking. TechGearLab also found defined marks from Lodge and Nutrichef. A pan can therefore create attractive stripes without reproducing the smoke, radiant heat, and airflow of an outdoor grill.
Preheating
Food Network identifies preheating as essential for searing, but the safe degree of preheating depends on the material. Cast iron can be heated aggressively for searing; nonstick surfaces should not be treated as if they were empty cast-iron cookware. Follow the manufacturer’s heat instructions, particularly for the Calphalon and Anolon pans.
Induction compatibility
The Lodge is listed as compatible with induction and other stovetops, and Jean Patrique lists The Whatever Pan as compatible with all cooktops. Calphalon’s current page does not claim induction compatibility, and Anolon explicitly lists its pan as incompatible with induction. For Staub, verify the exact Pure Grill model’s current specification rather than assuming that every enameled cast-iron grill has the same base.

Oven limits
The published limits are materially different: Jean Patrique lists approximately 480–482°F, Calphalon lists 450°F, and Anolon lists 400°F. Lodge is intended for oven use but does not need a comparable nonstick temperature ceiling in the cited specifications. With any pan, the handle, lid, and accessories may have different limits from the pan body.
Cleaning and maintenance
Raw Lodge cast iron requires hand washing, prompt drying, and oiling. Calphalon is the easiest of the listed choices for routine cleanup, with a dishwasher-safe exterior specified, although hand washing is still a reasonable way to protect a nonstick surface. Anolon requires hand washing and is not dishwasher-safe according to its manufacturer. Enameled cast iron avoids routine seasoning but still needs careful treatment to reduce the risk of thermal shock, chips, or abrasive damage.
Limitations and availability notes
Prices, inventory, warranties, and retailer listings can change after publication. Food Network explicitly cautions that price and stock may change, and the Jean Patrique and Calphalon manufacturer pages showed availability limitations when accessed. Check the current listing, exact model number, shipping region, warranty terms, and return policy before buying.
In particular, availability may vary significantly by geography. Jean Patrique’s specifications use metric measurements and Celsius alongside Fahrenheit, while the Calphalon, Lodge, and Anolon information cited here is presented in U.S.-oriented product terms. Confirm that the pan’s handle, lid, and cooktop compatibility suit your local version and appliance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which of these grill pans is best for an induction cooktop?
Lodge lists the Chef Collection cast-iron grill pan as induction-compatible, and Jean Patrique lists The Whatever Pan as compatible with all cooktops. Anolon is not induction-compatible, while Calphalon’s current product page does not claim induction compatibility. For Staub, confirm the exact Pure Grill model’s current specifications.
Is a grill pan as good as an outdoor grill?
No. A grill pan can create raised contact marks and help drain some fat, but it does not reproduce an outdoor grill’s smoke, airflow, or radiant heat. Choose one for indoor searing and grill-style marks rather than an identical outdoor-grilling result.
Which grill pan is easiest to care for?
The Calphalon nonstick pan is the strongest fit for easy release and cleanup in the cited Food Network testing. Anolon is also nonstick but requires hand washing. Lodge requires hand washing, drying, and oiling, while enameled cast iron avoids routine seasoning but still needs careful handling.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the Lodge Chef Collection if your priority is high-heat searing, defined grill marks, and long-term value. Choose Jean Patrique for the most versatile design, Calphalon for lighter nonstick cooking, Staub for premium enameled cast iron, and Anolon for a lower-cost nonstick pan with deeper sides. Recheck current stock, exact specifications, and warranty terms before ordering because the cited product pages and prices are subject to change.
