The Le Creuset Signature Skillet, 10.25-inch, is the best overall enameled cast-iron skillet in the published testing reviewed for this guide. Good Housekeeping named it the best enameled model after testing 16 cast-iron skillets, and it earned a perfect searing score in the steak test. It is followed by the Staub 10-inch Fry Pan, Lodge’s Essential and USA Enamel options, and the large 12-inch All-Clad skillet with lid.

Enameled cast iron gives you cast iron’s heat retention without seasoning the cooking surface, but it is not weightless or completely nonstick. The right choice depends on whether you value independent test evidence, premium construction, price, American manufacture, cooking capacity, or an included lid. Product prices and availability change, so verify the exact model and current specifications before ordering.

Quick verdict

Rank Skillet Best for Independent testing Oven rating or notable feature Care note
1 Le Creuset Signature Skillet, 10.25-inch Best overall enameled skillet Good Housekeeping’s top enameled pick after testing 16 cast-iron skillets 500°F; induction-compatible; two pour spouts and helper handle No seasoning required; hand washing is the cautious choice
2 Staub Cast Iron Fry Pan, 10-inch Best premium alternative Good Housekeeping’s other recommended enameled option 500°F; induction-compatible; matte-black interior; made in France No seasoning required; protect the enamel from impact and harsh tools
3 Lodge Essential Enamel Skillet Best value-oriented established brand No comparable skillet-specific independent test identified in the reviewed evidence Verify the current model listing for its exact rating and dimensions Lodge warns against empty preheating and metal utensils
4 Lodge USA Enamel Skillet, 11-inch Best American-made option Not included in the cited independent skillet testing Fits the lid from the USA Enamel 6-quart Dutch Oven; verify skillet-specific specifications Separate USA Enamel specifications from the imported Essential Enamel line
5 All-Clad Enameled Cast Iron Skillet with Lid, 12-inch Best large-capacity skillet with a lid No independent performance result used for this model 650°F manufacturer rating; induction- and grill-compatible; lid included Hand wash; use silicone, nylon, or wooden utensils

Choose the Le Creuset if you want the strongest published test support. Good Housekeeping gave its 10.25-inch Signature Enameled Cast-Iron Skillet the top enameled rating and recorded excellent steak-searing performance. The Staub is a close premium alternative, while Lodge gives shoppers two different value and manufacturing paths. Choose the All-Clad when a 12-inch cooking surface and included lid matter more than compact handling.

How these picks were evaluated

This is a comparison of published testing and verified product specifications, not a claim of first-person testing by this publication. Good Housekeeping tested 16 cast-iron skillets, including bare and enameled models. Its protocol covered steak browning and heat distribution, a flour-and-shortening heat map, cornbread baking, egg release, handling, price, and cleanability.

That distinction matters. Good Housekeeping’s overall cast-iron winner was a bare Lodge 10.25-inch skillet, not an enameled skillet. The Le Creuset and Staub rankings here refer specifically to the publication’s enameled category. They should not be interpreted as proof that enamel is better than bare cast iron for every task.

  • Dual Assist Handles for Control: Designed with dual assist handles for easy maneuverability, this braising pan moves confidently from stovetop to oven to table

  • About Lodge Cast Iron: Lodge cookware is versatile and as easy to clean as it is to cook with; taste a difference in your cooking with cast iron

Another limitation is that Epicurious’s 2024 cast-iron test explicitly excluded enameled skillets from its scope. It therefore cannot be used as independent evidence for the five enameled models below. A newer comparison found in research was not treated as load-bearing evidence because its accessible methodology was less established than Good Housekeeping’s documented testing.

1. Le Creuset Signature Skillet, 10.25-inch: best overall

The Le Creuset Signature Skillet is the best choice when you want the clearest combination of independent-test support, enameled-cast-iron convenience, and versatile everyday size. Good Housekeeping named it its Best Enameled pick after testing 16 skillets.

What the published testing found

In Good Housekeeping’s steak test, the Le Creuset earned a perfect searing score. That supports its case for steaks, burgers, chops, and other foods where a well-heated pan and strong browning are priorities. It was not flawless: the testers observed some sticking in the cornbread test. That is an important practical qualification, because an enameled surface is not the same thing as factory-applied slick nonstick.

Why it is the top pick

  • The black satin enamel does not require seasoning.
  • The 10.25-inch format is large enough for normal two-person meals without being as unwieldy as many 12-inch pans.
  • Two pour spouts and a helper handle improve control when moving sauces or a full pan.
  • Le Creuset lists induction compatibility and an oven limit of 500°F.
  • The range is available in a broad selection of colors.
  • The manufacturer lists a limited lifetime warranty.

The suggested retail price for the 10.25-inch model was $230 in the reviewed material. Treat that as a reference rather than a current price; color, retailer, and promotions can change the amount.

Tradeoffs

This is a premium, heavy pan. It costs considerably more than a value-oriented enameled skillet, and the enamel still needs careful treatment even though it eliminates seasoning. Good Housekeeping recommends hand washing, while the manufacturer’s specification allows dishwasher use. Hand washing is the safer long-term approach if preserving the finish is more important than convenience.

Buy it if: you want the best-supported enameled option for searing, stove-to-oven cooking, and everyday meals, and you are comfortable paying for the brand and finish.

2. Staub Cast Iron Fry Pan, 10-inch: best premium alternative

The Staub 10-inch Fry Pan is the strongest alternative to the Le Creuset for cooks who prefer Staub’s design, French manufacture, and matte-black enameled interior. Good Housekeeping called it Another Great Enameled Option.

What the published testing found

Good Housekeeping found even heat distribution, a nicely seared steak, and above-average egg performance. Cornbread produced only slight sticking, so the Staub was not completely release-free in testing, but its results were strong across several different cooking tasks.

Notable specifications

  • The matte-black enameled interior does not need seasoning.
  • It is specified for induction cooking and oven use up to 500°F.
  • Two pour spouts and a helper handle are built into the design.
  • The pan is made in France.

The official listing showed a price of $229.99 when researched. Availability and pricing should be checked before purchase. The black interior is well suited to high-heat cooking, although some cooks may find that a dark surface makes subtle color changes in browning less immediately visible than they would be on a lighter interior. That is a usability consideration, not an independently verified performance defect.

Buy it if: you want a compact premium pan with strong published test results and prefer Staub’s construction and styling to Le Creuset’s.

The sealed enamel surface also helps protect the cast iron from moisture and rust, making maintenance simple and hassle-free.

3. Lodge Essential Enamel Skillet: best value-oriented established brand option

The Lodge enameled cast iron skillet in the Essential Enamel line is the practical choice for shoppers who want an established cast-iron brand without automatically paying Le Creuset or Staub prices. Lodge describes the line as an imported alternative to its USA Enamel collection.

The evidence for this ranking is different from the evidence for the first two picks. The research located strong documentation for Lodge’s product-line positioning and care requirements, but not comparable skillet-specific independent testing. It should therefore be viewed as a value and maintenance recommendation, not as a test-proven performance winner.

What the enamel changes

Lodge describes enameled cast iron as a smooth porcelain surface bonded to an iron body. That gives the pan the heat-retention behavior associated with cast iron without exposing bare iron as the cooking surface. It also removes the need to build and maintain the seasoning layer required by a traditional bare skillet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

According to Lodge’s enameled-cast-iron care guidance, do not preheat an empty enameled piece: excessive empty heating can damage the coating. Lodge also advises against metal utensils that could scratch or chip the enamel.

Important buying check

Lodge sells more than one enameled line, and dimensions, oven ratings, handles, colors, and availability can vary by model. Confirm the exact Essential Enamel skillet listing before buying rather than assuming that specifications from another Lodge enameled product apply to it.

Buy it if: you want the maintenance advantages of enamel and the Lodge name, and you are willing to verify the exact model details instead of relying on the product family name alone.

4. Lodge USA Enamel Skillet, 11-inch: best American-made angle

The Lodge USA Enamel skillet is the pick for buyers who place domestic manufacture and coordination within Lodge’s USA Enamel collection ahead of independent test coverage. Lodge says the collection is made in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, and that the 11-inch skillet was added in 2024.

What distinguishes it

  • It belongs to Lodge’s American-made USA Enamel collection, not the imported Essential Enamel line.
  • The 11-inch format offers more cooking area than the 10-inch Staub and slightly more than the 10.25-inch Le Creuset.
  • Its black satin interior is designed to coordinate with the collection.
  • The skillet is designed to use the lid from the USA Enamel 6-quart Dutch Oven.

The lid compatibility can be useful if you already own that Dutch Oven or want a coordinated covered-cooking setup. It is not the same as including a lid in the skillet box, so confirm what is included with the listing you are considering.

Do not transfer specifications from another Lodge product

Lodge’s product guide distinguishes USA Enamel from Essential Enamel. The company’s USA Enamel grill-pan page also lists features such as a 500°F oven limit, induction compatibility, hand-wash guidance, and warnings about metal utensils. Those details should not automatically be assigned to the skillet: check the skillet’s own product page for its current oven rating, care instructions, and availability.

Buy it if: American manufacture, the 11-inch size, and compatibility with the USA Enamel Dutch Oven are central to your decision. Skip it as a blind choice if you need independently tested performance or a currently verified, exact specification sheet.

5. All-Clad Enameled Cast Iron Skillet with Lid, 12-inch: best large-capacity option

The All-Clad enameled cast iron skillet with lid is the most compelling choice for larger portions and covered cooking. Its 12-inch size gives more room for multiple steaks, larger chicken pieces, family portions, and meal preparation than the 10- to 10.25-inch tested picks.

What you get

  • A recycled stainless-steel lid is included.
  • Straight, mid-height sides provide room for braising, frying, sautéing, and baking.
  • Broad handles make the pan easier to grip, although they do not eliminate cast iron’s weight.
  • The interior is black matte enamel.
  • All-Clad lists a 650°F oven rating, induction compatibility, and outdoor-grill compatibility.

The manufacturer listing showed a regular price of $189.99 and a special price of $149.99 when researched. Those are time-sensitive listing prices, not a permanent price promise. The 650°F figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independent test result; it should not be presented as proof of superior real-world performance at that temperature.

All-Clad recommends hand washing and silicone, nylon, or wooden utensils. The included lid broadens the skillet’s usefulness for braising and covered cooking, but it also adds to the amount of cookware to store and clean.

Buy it if: you regularly cook for several people, want a lid included, and value the high manufacturer-listed oven limit more than a smaller, easier-to-handle pan.

Worth watching: Great Jones King Sear

The Great Jones King Sear is a credible 12-inch enameled-cast-iron alternative for cooks interested in a large pan for chicken, caramelized onions, and steak. Great Jones lists induction compatibility, minimal-maintenance enameled construction, and a 500°F oven limit. Its limited lifetime warranty covers eligible enameled cast-iron cookware bought directly from Great Jones or authorized retailers; see the Great Jones warranty terms for eligibility details.

It was not included in the five because the product page showed an out-of-stock state with an email-notification option when researched, and the available evidence did not include comparable independent testing. Availability may have changed, so it is worth checking if the five ranked options are unavailable or do not fit your needs. Do not treat it as currently available without confirming the live product page.

How to choose the right enameled skillet

Choose by cooking surface

Size Best suited to What to expect
9 to 10.25 inches One or two servings, eggs, vegetables, small steaks, and compact kitchens Easier to lift and heat, but less room for spreading food into a single layer
11 to 12 inches Family portions, multiple steaks, larger chicken pieces, and meal prep More usable surface area, but greater weight and more storage demand

Pan diameter is not the same as usable cooking surface. Sloped sides, straight walls, and the shape of the base affect how much food can sit directly over the heat. If you frequently sear several pieces at once, the 12-inch All-Clad is more practical than simply choosing the largest-looking 10-inch pan. If you mostly fry eggs or cook vegetables for one or two people, the smaller Le Creuset or Staub will be easier to handle.

Prioritize a helper handle

Enameled cast iron remains heavy, and a full pan is harder to control than an empty one. A helper handle is particularly useful when transferring the skillet from stovetop to oven or lifting it from a low rack. Both the Le Creuset and Staub include one. Do not confuse a helper handle with a detachable heat-resistant cover: you still need appropriate protection when the handle is hot.

Decide whether you need a lid

A lid changes the skillet’s role. It helps retain moisture for braising, traps heat for covered frying, and can make the pan more useful for one-pan meals. The All-Clad includes a recycled stainless-steel lid. The Lodge USA Enamel skillet is designed to use the lid from the USA Enamel 6-quart Dutch Oven, but that does not necessarily mean a lid is included. The Le Creuset and Staub picks in this guide are being evaluated primarily as open skillets, so confirm accessory compatibility if covered cooking is important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the exact oven rating

Do not assume all enameled cast iron has the same heat limit. The Le Creuset and Staub models reviewed here are listed at 500°F, the All-Clad at 650°F, and Great Jones at 500°F. The exact Lodge Essential and USA Enamel skillet specifications should be checked on their current model-specific listings. A rating also applies to the complete cookware setup: lids, knobs, handles, and accessories may have different limits.

Think of enamel as low-maintenance, not nonstick

Enamel eliminates seasoning, but it does not create a completely nonstick cooking surface. Add an appropriate amount of oil or other cooking fat, preheat gradually, and avoid moving food too early when browning. Good Housekeeping recorded some cornbread sticking in both the Le Creuset and Staub tests. That result is consistent with using enamel as a durable, low-maintenance cooking surface rather than expecting the release of a dedicated nonstick pan.

How to use and care for enameled cast iron

  1. Wash before the first use. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge. There is no seasoning step for the enameled cooking surface.
  2. Do not heat the empty pan aggressively. Lodge specifically warns that empty preheating can damage enamel. Start with low to medium heat when practical, then increase only as needed.
  3. Use oil and allow food to release naturally. Enameled cast iron retains heat well, so the pan may need less heat than a thin pan. Oil helps browning and release; it does not turn the surface into slick nonstick.
  4. Avoid thermal shock. Do not pour cold water into a very hot skillet or move a hot pan directly into a cold, wet environment. Let it cool gradually before washing.
  5. Use gentle utensils. Silicone, nylon, and wood are the safest general choices. Lodge specifically warns against metal utensils because they can scratch or chip the enamel. Even where a manufacturer permits dishwasher cleaning or more robust use, avoiding impacts is sensible.
  6. Clean by soaking rather than scouring. For stuck food, let the pan cool, soak it in warm soapy water, and use a nonabrasive sponge. Avoid abrasive powders, steel wool, and aggressive scraping that can dull or damage the finish.
  7. Follow the model’s own instructions. Dishwasher, oven, grill, lid, and utensil guidance varies. For example, the Le Creuset manufacturer specification allows dishwasher use, while Good Housekeeping recommends hand washing; the more conservative option is hand washing.

Are acidic foods suitable?

Enameled cookware is useful for recipes containing ingredients such as tomatoes, wine, or vinegar because the food contacts enamel rather than the exposed iron surface of a bare skillet. It avoids the same seasoning-related concerns associated with acidic ingredients in bare cast iron. Nevertheless, use the manufacturer’s care guidance, avoid prolonged abusive heating, and treat any chipped or cracked area as a reason to contact the manufacturer rather than continuing to scrape at it.

Which skillet should you buy?

  • Best evidence-led choice: Le Creuset Signature Skillet, 10.25-inch.
  • Best premium alternative: Staub Cast Iron Fry Pan, 10-inch.
  • Best established-brand value direction: Lodge Essential Enamel, after verifying the exact model specifications and price.
  • Best American-made direction: Lodge USA Enamel, 11-inch, if domestic manufacture and collection compatibility matter most.
  • Best for large meals and covered cooking: All-Clad 12-inch with lid.
  • Best availability-dependent alternative: Great Jones King Sear, provided it is back in stock and the current listing meets your requirements.

For most buyers, the Le Creuset is the safest recommendation because it combines the strongest cited enameled test result with useful size, helper hardware, induction compatibility, and a 500°F oven rating. Choose the Staub if its 10-inch format and design appeal more. Move to 11 or 12 inches when capacity matters, but expect the extra size to make the pan noticeably more demanding to lift, clean, and store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an enameled cast-iron skillet need seasoning?

No. Enameled cast iron does not require the seasoning routine used for bare cast iron. The enamel is the cooking surface, so you do not need to build a protective oil layer. You should still wash it gently, use cooking oil when appropriate, and avoid overheating the empty pan.

Is enameled cast iron genuinely nonstick?

Not completely. Enamel is lower-maintenance and can release food well when the pan is heated gradually and properly oiled, but it is not dedicated nonstick cookware. Good Housekeeping observed some cornbread sticking in both its Le Creuset and Staub testing.

Can these skillets be used on induction cooktops?

The Le Creuset 10.25-inch, Staub 10-inch, and All-Clad 12-inch models in this guide are listed as induction-compatible. Lodge model specifications should be checked on the exact Essential Enamel or USA Enamel skillet listing before purchase.

Can I cook tomatoes, wine, or other acidic foods in an enameled skillet?

Enameled cast iron is generally well suited to acidic recipes because the food contacts enamel rather than exposed iron. That avoids the same seasoning concerns as bare cast iron. Follow the particular manufacturer’s care instructions and do not use a pan with damaged enamel without consulting the manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can enameled cast-iron skillets go in the dishwasher?

Care instructions vary. Le Creuset’s manufacturer specification allows dishwasher use, but Good Housekeeping recommends hand washing. Lodge and All-Clad recommend gentle care, and hand washing is the conservative choice for preserving the enamel on any model.

How do I prevent enamel from cracking or chipping?

Let the skillet cool gradually. Do not pour cold water into a very hot pan or move it abruptly between extreme temperatures. Thermal shock can damage enamel, and impacts or metal utensils can also chip or scratch the surface.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 10.25-inch Le Creuset Signature Skillet is the best-supported enameled choice in the published testing reviewed here. Staub is the closest premium alternative; Lodge offers distinct value and American-made options; and All-Clad is the practical large-format pick when an included lid matters. None should be treated as completely nonstick, and every model deserves gradual heating, gentle utensils, and careful cooling.
