Manchester City’s expanded North Stand reached full-capacity matchday operation on Sunday, May 24, 2026, after a 50%-capacity public test event on May 20. The Aston Villa fixture was later described as the first full-capacity operation of the expanded stand, with attendance reaching a new Etihad Stadium record of 60,332.
That is the correct answer for the seating opening—not for the entire surrounding development. Manchester City is delivering the wider Medlock Square destination in phases, with branding and other works still continuing after the new stand entered matchday use.

The new seating opened through a phased commissioning process: a public test event used 50% of the additional capacity on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, before the expanded general-admission areas operated at full capacity for the Premier League match against Aston Villa on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
That Aston Villa fixture was later recorded by Manchester City supporter-engagement minutes as the first full-capacity operation of the expanded North Stand. Attendance reached 60,332, a new Etihad Stadium record. The distinction matters, however: the seating bowl had reached matchday operation, but the wider development around the stadium was still being completed and opened in phases.

North Stand expansion opening date: the short answer
| Milestone | Date or status |
|---|---|
| First public test event | May 20, 2026, using 50% of the additional seating capacity |
| First full-capacity operation | May 24, 2026, for Manchester City versus Aston Villa |
| Attendance at the full-capacity fixture | 60,332, a new Etihad Stadium attendance record |
| Wider Medlock Square facilities | Phased opening, with major elements scheduled for later in 2026 |
| Separate Mamma Mia! venue | Planning approved; expected to open in late 2027 |
So, if “opening” means the new North Stand seating being used for a full-capacity match, the answer is May 24, 2026. If it means the whole £300 million stadium-and-entertainment development, there was no single confirmed opening date in the latest project updates covered here.
What Manchester City’s North Stand project adds
The expansion adds more than 7,000 general-admission seats and takes the Etihad Stadium’s capacity to more than 60,000. Manchester City has also said that at least 3,000 of the additional seats would be allocated to rail seating. The final rail-seating figure could increase depending on demand.
The project is more than a straightforward stand extension. The expanded North Stand includes new concourse areas intended to support activity before and after matches, as well as:
- self-service screens;
- upgraded televisions and sound systems;
- the Cross Bar, designed for approximately 300 supporters;
- City Hall, designed for approximately 500 supporters and capable of hosting non-matchday events; and
- premium hospitality space at the top of the new stand.
The premium offer includes Matchday at Zadie’s, a Pan-Asian restaurant and bar concept with capacity for 288 guests on matchdays. The package combines dining, drinks, a dedicated balcony seat and a premium matchday setting. It should be treated as a specific hospitality product rather than evidence that every part of the wider North Stand destination was open to all visitors at the same time.
Why May 20 and May 24 were separate opening milestones
Large stadium projects are not normally brought into public use simply because construction has reached a visually finished stage. New seating areas also need operational checks involving circulation, stewarding, entrances, concourses, food and drink services, emergency procedures and accessibility arrangements.
Manchester City’s first public event on May 20 used half of the extra seating capacity—more than 3,500 fans. The club said the event passed the required operational checks. That allowed the expanded general-admission area to be used at 100% of its additional capacity for the Aston Villa fixture four days later.
This explains why describing May 20 as the sole “opening date” is incomplete. It was the first public test event, not the first full-capacity matchday operation. Conversely, describing May 24 as the completion date for the entire project would also be too broad. It was the key operational milestone for the new seating.
Confirmed North Stand expansion timeline
- October 23, 2025: Manchester City said the expanded single upper tier was expected to open before the end of the 2025/26 season. The club indicated that the wider museum, fan zone, hotel and food-and-beverage spaces were due later, in late 2026.
- February 2, 2026: City Matters minutes reported that Level Two remained on schedule for completion later in the 2025/26 season. They also confirmed that test events would be required before supporters could use the new seats.
- May 20, 2026: The first public fan event took place with 50% of the additional seats in use. The club then confirmed that the necessary operational checks had been passed.
- May 24, 2026: Manchester City operated the expanded North Stand at full capacity for the Aston Villa match. Supporter minutes later described this as the first full-capacity operation and recorded the 60,332 attendance.
- Summer 2026: Branding, permanent signage, lighting and accessibility work remained in progress, according to the club’s supporter-engagement minutes.
- Later in 2026: The museum, fan zone, hotel, food-and-beverage facilities and wider Medlock Square public realm were still described as opening in phases. The project information reviewed did not provide one definitive date for the complete destination.
What is open, and what was still being completed?
The clearest way to understand the project is to separate the expanded seating bowl from the wider stadium campus.
Expanded seating bowl
The new general-admission areas had reached full-capacity matchday operation by May 24, 2026. This is the confirmed opening milestone for supporters asking when they could first use the entire additional seating allocation during a match.

North Stand hospitality and concourse facilities
The new concourses, bars and hospitality spaces form part of the North Stand development, but availability may depend on the particular match, ticket type and operating schedule. City Hall and Cross Bar were introduced as named venues within the expanded stand, while Zadie’s serves the premium end of the development.

The broader destination is now branded Medlock Square, a name taken from the River Medlock beneath the site. It is intended to operate as a year-round entertainment and visitor destination connecting the Etihad Stadium with the adjacent Co-op Live arena.
Planned and announced elements include:
- the North Stand expansion;
- premium bars and hospitality;
- an interactive Manchester City museum experience;
- a flagship City Store;
- a covered activation space for up to 3,000 people;
- food and drink venues;
- the 401-room The Medlock Hotel; and
- roof-walk activities, including zipwires and abseiling.
The official Medlock Square project information has presented these attractions as parts of a phased destination rather than as facilities that all opened with the May 24 seating milestone. It has also described One Medlock Square workspace as coming soon, another indication that the site’s delivery programme extends beyond the new stand itself.
How large is the wider project?
Manchester City originally described the wider development as a £300 million project centred on the North Stand. Earlier project material referred to a covered fan zone for approximately 3,000 people, a roughly 400-bed hotel, a new City Store, a museum, a sky bar and a stadium roof walk. Later material specified the hotel at 401 rooms.
The different figures should not be treated as contradictions. “£300 million” describes the planned wider development, while Manchester City’s 2024/25 annual report recorded £178.6 million of assets under construction at June 30, 2025. That accounting figure covered the position at a particular reporting date and should not be read as the final cost of the entire completed destination. It also predates the May 2026 seating opening.

For construction and project-status purposes, the important point is that the financial reporting and the public opening milestones measure different things. The annual report helps establish the scale of investment; it does not override the later operational updates about which elements had opened.
Supporter and ticketing implications
Manchester City said most of the additional general-admission capacity would be allocated to season-ticket members. The expansion also supported plans for more than 4,000 new Flexi Season Tickets across the stadium ahead of the 2026/27 season, with 50% ring-fenced for Junior Cityzens.
Eligibility for the new Flexi Season Ticket offer was tied to having bought general-admission tickets for 35 different home men’s matches across the 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons. That is a specific qualification requirement, not a general guarantee that every supporter applying for a ticket would be eligible.
The creation of City Hall also affected some existing North Stand arrangements. A small number of North Stand Level 0 season-ticket members could be required to relocate before 2026/27. The club said affected supporters would receive a priority relocation window and would not have to pay more if they moved to a more expensive general-admission location.

For visitors buying a one-off match ticket, the practical effect of the expansion is a larger overall stadium and more possible seating inventory, but ticket availability, prices and exact seat allocations remain match-specific.
Accessibility information for the expanded North Stand
Manchester City’s 2026/27 accessibility statement describes additional entrances serving the expansion and identifies accessibility provisions including:
- lift access to Levels 1 and 2;
- accessible toilets;
- lowered food-and-drink counters;
- fixed hearing loops; and
- wheelchair-bay locations within the North Stand.
Levels 1 and 2 can be reached by stairs or lift. The statement also notes 11 steps from each concourse to the bowl. Because branding, lighting, signage and accessibility measures were still being refined during the summer after the first full-capacity operation, supporters should check the match-specific access instructions before travelling rather than relying only on general project descriptions.
Planning a visit beyond the match
The North Stand expansion is designed to make the Etihad Campus a destination outside the 90 minutes of a match. When the wider facilities are operational, the Manchester City Stadium Tour and museum experience should appeal to visitors who want to combine a stadium visit with the club’s history and interactive exhibits. The roof-walk activities are a separate adventure-style attraction, not part of ordinary stand access.

Out-of-town visitors should also distinguish the planned The Medlock Hotel from accommodation that was already bookable when the North Stand seating opened. The project information identifies the 401-room hotel as a core part of Medlock Square, but a public booking route and confirmed operating date should be checked before making travel arrangements.
The adjacent Co-op Live events programme may allow visitors to combine a football match with a concert or another arena event, but Co-op Live is a separate venue. Its schedule and entry arrangements should not be assumed to be included in a Manchester City match ticket.

Manchester City’s proposed Mamma Mia! The Party at Medlock Square should not be presented as part of the North Stand opening. It is a separate immersive entertainment venue planned for up to 600 guests per show in a three-storey building.
Manchester City Council approved the planning application, and a later Medlock Square update said the venue was expected to open in late 2027. That timeline places it well after the May 2026 seating milestone and the wider destination facilities scheduled for later in 2026.
What the opening means for the project as a whole
The May 24, 2026 Aston Villa match marked a significant delivery point: Manchester City had moved from construction and testing to full-capacity public operation of the expanded North Stand. The 60,332 attendance demonstrated the immediate stadium-capacity result.

It did not, however, establish that every element of the surrounding entertainment district was complete. The remaining work and later attractions—including permanent finishes, the museum, fan zone, hotel, food-and-beverage venues and roof-walk facilities—belonged to a separate phase of the programme.
The most accurate overall description is therefore: Manchester City’s new North Stand seating opened in stages in May 2026, reaching full-capacity matchday operation on May 24, while the wider Medlock Square destination continued through a phased opening programme.

When did Manchester City’s new North Stand open?
The expanded North Stand reached full-capacity matchday operation on Sunday, May 24, 2026, for Manchester City’s Premier League match against Aston Villa. A public test event using 50% of the additional seating took place on May 20.
Was the whole £300 million development complete on May 24, 2026?
No. May 24, 2026 was the first full-capacity operation of the expanded seating area. The wider Medlock Square development—including the hotel, museum, fan zone and other attractions—was scheduled to open in phases.
How many seats does the North Stand expansion add?
The project adds more than 7,000 general-admission seats, taking the Etihad Stadium’s capacity to more than 60,000. At least 3,000 of the additional seats were planned as rail seating, with the final amount potentially increasing according to demand.
What is included in Medlock Square?
The new destination includes an interactive Manchester City museum experience, a flagship City Store, food and drink venues, the 401-room Medlock Hotel, a covered activation space, premium hospitality and roof-walk activities. These facilities were being delivered separately from the seating bowl.

When is Mamma Mia! The Party at Medlock Square expected to open?
The planned venue received planning approval and was expected to open in late 2027. It is a separate future project, not part of the May 2026 North Stand opening.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The expanded North Stand reached full-capacity matchday operation on May 24, 2026, after a 50%-capacity public test on May 20. The seating was operational, but the wider £300 million Medlock Square development was not necessarily complete and continued opening in phases.
