When grease has become a thick, sticky film around a range, backsplash, cabinet, or appliance exterior, Easy-Off Heavy Duty Degreaser is the best starting point among these picks. Shop TODAY named it its best overall kitchen degreaser and found that it removed more than half of the visible buildup after the first pass and about 95% of a heavier stain after repeated passes. It received a 5/5 efficiency score and a 4.83/5 overall score in that test.

2. Lysol Grease & Grime All-Purpose Cleaner: best scent and disinfecting option
Lysol Grease & Grime All-Purpose Cleaner is the better choice when the cleaning job includes ordinary kitchen grease and you want a citrus scent plus disinfecting directions on the label. Shop TODAY rated it its best-scented pick, giving it 4.5/5 for efficiency, 5/5 for ease of use, 5/5 for scent, and a 4.83/5 overall average.
In that test, approximately 90% of a cabinet’s stains disappeared after the first pass. A two-minute dwell time removed the remaining visible soil. Lysol’s product information says its all-purpose cleaners cut tough grease and soap scum and kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria when used as directed on the applicable hard, nonporous surfaces.
Choose it for: Counters, sinks, stovetops, cabinets, and appliance exteriors when fragrance and a disinfecting use case matter.
Important qualification: Do not treat “kills 99.9%” as a general-purpose promise for every bottle, surface, or use. Check the exact product label for the approved surface, required wet contact time, and whether the disinfecting claim applies to the task you are performing. Cleaning and disinfecting are separate steps when the label requires them.
3. Zep Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser: best for lighter grease
For daily or moderate grease rather than years-old, baked-on buildup, Zep Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser is a practical citrus-scented workhorse. Shop TODAY rated it best for lighter stains, with 4.5/5 for efficiency, 5/5 for ease of use, 4.5/5 for scent, and a 4.67/5 overall score.
The tester found that it handled lighter cabinet stains very well. Older, heavily caked grease required more scrubbing and repeated passes, so this is not the strongest choice for the hardest deposits. Zep’s official all-purpose cleaner and degreaser instructions for the relevant product family say to spray, wait one minute, wipe, and rinse, while recommending a test on an inconspicuous area first. The manufacturer lists surfaces such as tile, stainless steel, countertops, fiberglass, painted surfaces, and porcelain for that product information.
Choose it for: Routine kitchen cleanup, moderate grease, and jobs where a citrus fragrance is preferable.

Good Housekeeping selected Krud Kutter as its best overall degreaser in a separate March 2024 lab test. That evaluation praised its performance with only a few wipes, its dilution flexibility, EPA Safer Choice certification, and its ability to work appropriately on materials including porcelain, aluminum, and glass.
The manufacturer describes the formula as water-based and biodegradable, without bleach, ammonia, or hazardous solvents. It gives full-strength guidance for heavy grease and oil, a 1.5-cup-per-gallon dilution for general cleaning, and a lighter dilution for reflective surfaces. That flexibility can make the concentrate economical for larger cleanup jobs, but measuring and mixing are additional steps.
Choose it for: Greasy cabinet fronts, mixed household messes, and anyone who wants one concentrate for several compatible indoor, automotive, or marine surfaces.
Do not use it on: Varnished surfaces or leather, according to the manufacturer. “Suitable for most indoor surfaces” does not mean universally safe. Test first, use the appropriate dilution, and rinse or wipe as directed.
5. Bar Keepers Friend Powder Cleanser: best for cookware and stainless steel
Bar Keepers Friend Powder Cleanser is the specialist pick when grease is only one part of the problem. It is particularly useful when a stainless-steel sink, cookware item, or range hood also has tarnish, rust staining, mineral deposits, or dull discoloration.

Bar Keepers Friend also distinguishes between types of stainless steel. Follow the product’s current label for your particular appliance.
How to choose the right degreaser

Why some degreasers work better than others
“Degreaser” is a broad product label, not a single chemical category. An effective formula must break down oily soil and help lift it away from the surface. Surfactants loosen and suspend grease; alkalinity and solvents can contribute to cutting more difficult deposits. The balance affects cleaning strength, odor, residue, dwell time, and surface compatibility.
A stronger product is not automatically the better product. A mild formula used on a suitable surface may be the right choice for routine cleaning, while a powerful alkaline or solvent-containing cleaner can dull, discolor, soften, or strip a finish. The safest comparison is always between the product’s label directions and the material being cleaned.
A safer way to use any degreaser
- Remove loose debris first. Wipe away crumbs, dust, and surface dirt so the degreaser can contact the oily film.
- Identify the material. Check whether the surface is painted, varnished, bare wood, vinyl, soft metal, stainless steel, porcelain, tile, glass, or plastic. If you cannot identify the finish, start with the least aggressive method and test a hidden spot.
- Read the exact label. Confirm the approved surface, dilution, dwell time, ventilation requirements, rinse instructions, and any protective-equipment advice.
- Apply sparingly. Spray onto a cloth when overspray could reach electronics, seams, flooring, or a delicate finish. Keep your face away from the spray and ventilate the area, especially with aerosol products.
- Allow the stated dwell time. More time is not always better. Bar Keepers Friend, for example, calls for rinsing within one minute; other products specify their own contact times.
- Wipe, rinse, and dry. Remove the dissolved grease completely. Residue can leave a dull or sticky film and may damage some finishes over time.
- Repeat before escalating. A second correctly timed application is often safer than immediately switching to a harsher chemical or abrasive.
Keep nitrile cleaning gloves available for stronger formulas and use clean microfiber cleaning cloths for application and removal. Gloves do not replace label instructions, and cloths should be washed separately if they become heavily saturated with grease or chemical residue.

Surface and chemical safety
- Use a product only on surfaces named by its label, and test first in an inconspicuous location.
- Do not generalize a kitchen degreaser as safe for construction materials, painted cabinetry, finished wood, vinyl, leather, soft metals, or natural stone unless the label expressly allows that use.
- Never mix cleaning chemicals. In particular, do not combine degreasers with bleach, ammonia, acids, or other cleaners.
- Ventilate the room and keep the spray away from your face. Aerosols can produce finer airborne particles than trigger sprays.
- Protect nearby flooring, electrical controls, unfinished seams, and porous materials from overspray and runoff.
- Rinse food-contact surfaces exactly as directed before using them again.
- Store products in their original containers, away from children, pets, heat, and incompatible chemicals.
For construction, workshop, or renovation cleanup, remember that these recommendations were primarily evaluated for kitchen and household surfaces. Grease on machinery, engines, tools, unfinished concrete, coatings, or jobsite materials may require a product specifically labeled for that substrate. Compatibility testing matters more than the word “heavy-duty” on the front of the bottle.
