Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: The GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra is the best all-around countertop nugget ice maker for most enthusiasts. The GoveeLife Smart Nugget Ice Maker Pro is the better high-output, app-connected choice, while the Frigidaire Gallery EFIC255 is the value-oriented nugget option when you can find the exact model in stock. For hard bullet ice, the Chefman Iceman Dual-Size is the fastest tested option, and the Frigidaire EFIC189 is the simplest budget choice.
That recommendation comes with an important warning: a countertop ice maker is not a freezer. Its bin usually is not refrigerated, so ice melts, clumps, and may be recycled into the water reservoir. Buy one for making fresh ice on demand—not for storing a day’s production.

The five best countertop ice makers at a glance
Choose the texture of ice before comparing production numbers. Nugget ice is soft, porous, and chewable. Bullet ice is harder, generally hollow, and usually faster and less expensive to produce. Neither is a substitute for large, clear cocktail ice.

Our testing and evidence standard
The article title says tested and reviewed, but the testing figures above are attributed to named publications rather than presented as an undisclosed in-house laboratory test. Food Network tested first-cycle speed and one-hour output across countertop machines. Reviewed tested the Govee and compared nugget machines, while Popular Mechanics tested the Frigidaire EFIC189 and other countertop models. Manufacturer specifications are identified separately because they often use different room and water temperatures.
A genuinely fair in-house comparison would use the same room, countertop, water source, water temperature, ambient temperature, scale, timer, and sound-meter position for every machine. It would measure three different milestones:
- First ice: when the first pieces drop. These pieces may be wet, undersized, or slushy.
- First usable batch: when the ice reaches the normal shape and texture.
- Full-bin time: when the machine first stops because its sensor detects a full basket.
It should also record one-hour yield, recovery after removing half the ice, melt at 30 and 60 minutes, refill frequency, noise during freezing and ice drops, and the time required for a complete manufacturer-approved cleaning. A two- to four-week ownership test is especially important for nugget machines because scale, odors, pump noise, false alerts, and changing ice texture may not appear during a single afternoon.
1. GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra: best overall nugget ice maker
Best for: Buyers who want soft nugget ice, a side tank, useful smart controls, and the strongest overall balance of quality and convenience.
Bottom line: The Opal 2.0 Ultra is the safest premium recommendation for a household that specifically wants nugget ice. It combines a 3-lb bin, 0.75-gallon side tank, Wi-Fi controls, a scale-inhibiting filter, and well-established independent coverage. It is not small, cheap, or maintenance-free, and its public output figures vary by model version and test conditions.
Ice quality and speed
The Opal makes nugget ice: small, porous pieces designed to be softer and more chewable than hard bullet ice. GE says the first ice can arrive in 10 minutes or less, but the earliest pieces may be slushy. GE’s troubleshooting guidance says the ice should develop into standard nuggets after approximately 30 minutes. That distinction matters: a machine can produce its first pieces quickly without delivering a full serving of normal ice just as quickly.

GE lists up to 38 lb per day and 1.6 lb per hour at 70°F ambient temperature with 60°F water. The same product information lists lower performance—32 lb per day and 1.33 lb per hour—under warmer DOE conditions of 90°F ambient and 70°F water. Do not compare the 38-lb figure directly with another machine’s maximum unless the test conditions match.
Capacity, footprint, and noise
The 3-lb bin is adequate for daily drinks but is not party-scale storage. The side tank reduces refilling, although the unit still needs counter space for the tank, access to the bin, and drainage. The main appliance measures 16.5 inches high by 13.43 inches wide by 17.5 inches deep and weighs about 37.65 lb. GE specifies four inches of clearance at the sides and rear. Measure the complete installation, not just the stainless-steel body, before ordering.
GE claims 44 dBA. Reviewed considered the Opal relatively quiet, while Popular Mechanics noticed operating noise. Those findings are not contradictory: a low compressor hum may be acceptable in one kitchen but distracting in an open-plan room. A dBA number is meaningful only when the measurement distance, room, operating phase, and meter are known.
Cleaning and smart features
The Opal has an advanced cleaning system, reusable air filter, and scale-inhibiting filter, but those features reduce maintenance rather than eliminate it. GE recommends weekly reservoir cleaning, filter cleaning at least every two months, and descaling every two to three weeks depending on water hardness and use for current Opal models without the older round front button. Follow the manual for the approved cleaner; do not assume vinegar, bleach, or citric acid is permitted.
SmartHQ supports scheduling, maintenance alerts, software updates, and Alexa and Google Home control. These are useful if you want ice ready at a predictable time or need reminders to clean. They are not a reason by themselves to buy a machine if you will operate it with the physical controls.
Pros and cons
- Pros: Consistently strong nugget-ice reputation; side-tank convenience; useful app and voice features; established support documentation; 3-lb bin.
- Cons: Expensive; heavy; requires substantial clearance; melting ice can clump; weekly cleaning and frequent descaling may be necessary; long-term reliability is not established conclusively by public short-term testing.
Price and availability: GE’s product page showed a $449 sale price against a $499 listed price when checked August 10, 2026. The product page lists a limited one-year appliance-parts warranty and no labor warranty. Confirm the current warranty language and seller before purchase.
2. GoveeLife Smart Nugget Ice Maker Pro: best high-output smart model
Best for: Large households, parties, and smart-home users who will genuinely use a high-production nugget machine.
Bottom line: The Govee Nugget Pro is the high-capacity choice. Govee claims six-minute first ice, 60 lb per day, a 3.5-lb bin, two water tanks, and approximately 40 dB operation. Reviewed filled the bin in just over 90 minutes and found it fast, quiet, and app-friendly. Its biggest drawbacks are size, weight, price, and the fact that its headline output is excessive for many homes.

Capacity and real-world production
The Pro has a 2.2-liter main tank and a 4.9-liter side tank, along with the largest listed bin in this group at 3.5 lb. That capacity is more useful for a party than the 60-lb/day number alone: the machine can hold more ice before stopping, and the larger tanks reduce attention during a busy afternoon.
Reviewed’s hands-on result—just over 90 minutes to fill the 3.5-lb bin—is more useful than treating 60 lb/day as guaranteed home output. A maximum daily claim assumes favorable conditions and repeated production. It does not mean the bin stores 60 lb, nor that the machine can produce that amount without melting, refilling, pauses, or cleaning.
App and cleaning features
The GoveeHome app supports scheduling, production history, remote cleaning and descaling, reminders, and Alexa and Google Assistant control. These are among the more practical smart features in the category because they address timing and maintenance rather than merely displaying an on/off button.
Rank #2

- Quiet & Self-Cleaning: Enjoy fresh ice with under 45 dB low-noise operation and a one-touch self-cleaning cycle. The lift-up top makes cleaning easier, helping keep your pebble ice maker fresh for everyday use. ETL certified and backed by 1-year tech support
Govee lists a 10-minute quick-clean mode and a 30-minute deep-descaling mode. Reviewed noted that these modes still require the owner to add cleaning agents, drain and rinse the machine, wipe parts, and clean areas the automated cycle may not reach. Self-cleaning is a convenience, not a substitute for sanitation and descaling.
Weight, noise, and warranty uncertainty
Reviewed measured the machine at nearly 50 lb. That is countertop-sized, but it is not genuinely portable for most people once water and ice are added. Plan the permanent location carefully, use a level surface, and drain it before moving.
Govee’s product page states a three-year guarantee, while the general GoveeLife warranty information states one year. Resolve that discrepancy using the product-specific warranty document or written customer-support confirmation before publication or purchase. Also verify the availability of replacement filters, tanks, bins, pumps, and descaler.
Price and availability: Govee listed the Nugget Pro at $499.99 when checked August 10, 2026. Confirm the exact seller, model, return period, and product-specific warranty.
3. Frigidaire Gallery EFIC255: best value nugget ice when available
Best for: Buyers who want nugget ice but do not need Wi-Fi or the premium price of the GE and Govee.
Recommended Free Tools
Bottom line: The EFIC255 produced clean-tasting nugget ice at approximately 1.5 lb per hour in Reviewed’s testing and costs less than the premium GE when available. It is a compelling value pick, but its availability is inconsistent, it was noisy in testing, and its cleaning specifications are not uniform across listings.
Ice, speed, and capacity
Product documentation puts the first nugget at roughly 10–15 minutes. Reviewed found a full basket in a couple of hours and measured approximately 1.5 lb per hour. Its 3-lb bin is similar in size to the GE’s and adequate for normal daily use, but it will not hold a large party’s entire supply.
The ice is nugget-style rather than hard bullet ice, but nugget machines do not all produce identical density or chewability. A fair review should blind-test the pieces for softness, airiness, crunch, size consistency, and flavor rather than automatically calling every pebble-shaped product Sonic-style ice.
What you give up
There is no Wi-Fi or app. Reviewed found the machine noisier than premium alternatives and reported no self-cleaning function, although some retailer listings differ. Check the manual for the exact EFIC255 submodel before relying on a self-clean claim. Frigidaire also sells several similar-looking machines, including EFIC2550, EFIC220, EFIC237, EFIC239, and EFIC165. Do not transfer capacity, cleaning instructions, or warranty details from one model to another.

4. Chefman Iceman Dual-Size: best fast bullet-ice maker
Best for: Ordinary cold drinks, offices, small kitchens, RVs, and buyers who prioritize speed over chewable texture.
Bottom line: Food Network found the Chefman Iceman Dual-Size produced the fastest first batch in its tested group: nine pieces in as little as six minutes. It makes hard bullet ice in two sizes, has a self-cleaning cycle and carry handle, and weighs far less than the large nugget machines. The deciding problem is availability—the official Chefman page showed it out of stock when checked.
Performance and capacity
Food Network measured 1 lb 4 oz of ice in one hour and confirmed the advertised 26-lb-per-day maximum. The 1.3-lb bin is small, so it is better for continuous serving than for storing a large supply. If guests will consume ice faster than the machine produces it, you will need a freezer or a second source of ice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBullet ice is harder and generally less chewable than nugget ice. The two selectable sizes are useful for adapting ordinary drinks, but they do not turn this machine into a nugget maker or a clear-cocktail-ice machine.
Size and features
Chefman lists dimensions of 12.2 inches wide by 9.06 inches deep by 12.8 inches high and a weight of 17.44 lb. It has a viewing window, removable basket, carry handle, and self-cleaning cycle. The one-year assurance is shorter and less substantial than the product claims advertised by some premium competitors, so retain the receipt and verify the current terms.
Price and availability: The official page showed the product out of stock on August 10, 2026. Do not recommend or buy a marketplace substitute merely because it has a similar name. Confirm the exact Chefman product, seller, return policy, and warranty.
5. Frigidaire EFIC189: best simple budget bullet maker
Best for: Shoppers who need inexpensive, fast ice and do not care about nugget texture or smart controls.
Rank #3
- Fresh Nugget Ice in 7 Mins: The Euhomy countertop nugget ice maker produces soft, chewable ice in just 7 minutes. With a 1.1L water tank, this pebble ice maker machine makes up to 34 lbs of refreshing pebble ice every 24 hours, providing a continuous supply of fresh nugget ice for home use or entertaining
- Soft, Chewable Nugget Ice: Love chewing ice and enjoying chilled drinks? The EUHOMY nugget ice maker countertop produces crunchy, slow-melting nugget ice with an authentic taste. Perfect for snacking on its own or adding to cocktails, sodas, and more
- Easy to Use: Just fill the water tank, press the “ICE” button, and enjoy. The clear window lets you check the ice level at a glance, while the Ice Full and Add Water alerts let you know when it’s time to serve or refill this sonic ice maker
- Automatic Deep Cleaning: The built-in self-cleaning system eliminates tedious manual scrubbing. Simply press and hold the “CLEAN” button for about 5 seconds to activate the cleaning cycle, making maintenance effortless and helping keep your pellet ice makers countertop fresh and ready for continuous use
- Compact Design & Reliable Support: Measuring 11.02 × 9.12 × 12.62 inches, this portable compact nugget ice maker fits easily on most countertops and is ideal for home, office, kitchen, RVs, and more. Our support team is always here to help with any questions. Note: A blue or green appearance is caused by the protective film—simply remove it before use
Bottom line: The EFIC189 is the practical choice when the job is simply making ordinary ice on a countertop. Popular Mechanics measured approximately seven-minute first batches, up to 26 lb per day, and a basket slightly above 2 lb. It is a better fit for everyday drinks than for people specifically seeking soft, chewable ice.
Why it makes the list
This type of machine is usually easier to justify than a $450–$500 nugget maker. It can supply cold drinks quickly, takes less commitment than a heavy premium unit, and is appropriate for small kitchens, offices, RVs, and occasional use. Popular Mechanics selected the EFIC189 as its best overall countertop model in a broader roundup.
The trade-off is texture. The EFIC189 makes hard bullet ice, not nugget ice. The exact size controls, cleaning program, dimensions, water capacity, and current price must be checked against the specific retail listing because Frigidaire sells multiple similar EFIC models.
Price and availability: Check the live retailer listing immediately before purchase and confirm that it says EFIC189 rather than a visually similar EFIC model. Verify the current warranty, return period, replacement parts, and cleaning instructions.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →New for 2026: GE Profile Opal Mini
The GE Profile Opal Mini launched July 14, 2026, after many 2026 buying guides had already been updated. It is the most important new compact nugget-ice candidate because it addresses the original Opal’s footprint and price.
GE lists dimensions of 14.56 inches high by 8.6 inches wide by 15.6 inches deep—approximately 30% smaller than the Opal Ultra—and Wi-Fi connectivity through SmartHQ. GE pages vary between up to 34 and 36 lb per day, with approximately 1.5 lb per hour. Starting prices range from $279 to $299 for some standard models; Mini Pro and Mini Pro+ variants are listed at $379 and $399.
It is not included in the five ranked picks because independent hands-on evidence was still sparse as of August 10, 2026. Manufacturer specifications alone cannot establish its actual nugget texture, noise, full-bin time, drainage, cleaning burden, or whether its narrower body makes tank filling and bin access awkward. It should be tested directly against the Opal 2.0 Ultra, Govee Pro, and Frigidaire EFIC255 before being called the best compact model.
What kind of ice should you buy?
| Ice type | Texture and shape | Best uses | Melt and freezer behavior | Models here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nugget or pebble | Small, porous, airy pieces; usually softer, crunchy, and chewable. Density differs substantially by machine. | Soda, iced coffee, lemonade, smoothies, snacking | Porous pieces generally melt faster than dense cubes. They can clump in a freezer and lose their loose texture. | GE Opal 2.0 Ultra, Govee Pro, Frigidaire EFIC255, GE Opal Mini |
| Bullet | Harder, hollow or bullet-shaped pieces; usually less chewable. | Water, soft drinks, offices, parties, general cooling | Usually more durable than nugget ice but still melts in a non-refrigerated bin and may freeze into clumps in a home freezer. | Chefman Iceman Dual-Size, Frigidaire EFIC189 |
| Clear or large-format | Large, dense, visually clear cubes or spheres. | Whiskey, cocktails, premium drinks | Large clear pieces melt more slowly and are designed for presentation. | Not the focus of this roundup |
For cocktails, buy a clear-ice or large-format machine instead of expecting a bullet or nugget appliance to produce slow-melting, transparent cubes. Reviewed and Forbes Vetted treat those as separate categories.
What pounds per day really means
Daily output is a manufacturer maximum, not the amount of ice that sits ready in the bin. A machine advertised at 60 lb per day may have a 3.5-lb basket. A 26-lb-per-day bullet maker may have only a 1.3-lb bin. The useful questions are:
- How soon does usable ice appear?
- How much ice is produced in one hour?
- How long does a full bin take?
- How much ice melts before it is served?
- How quickly does production resume after scooping?
- How often must the reservoir be refilled?
Room and water temperature matter. GE’s Opal rating changes from 38 lb per day at 70°F ambient and 60°F water to 32 lb per day under 90°F ambient and 70°F water. A warm kitchen, warm tap water, poor ventilation, scale, and repeated pauses can all reduce production. The machine may also recycle meltwater, so a daily production figure is not the same as net new ice stored.
Do countertop ice makers keep ice frozen?
No—not indefinitely. Most countertop bins are insulated but not refrigerated. Ice melts at the bottom, and some machines filter or recirculate that water to make another batch. If the machine’s sensor sees a full bin, it may stop until ice is removed, even while the oldest pieces are melting.
Move extra ice to a freezer if you need to store it, but expect nugget ice to clump and lose some of its original texture. For large parties, a freezer or purchased bagged ice is still useful. A countertop maker is best viewed as a fresh-batch appliance.

Cleaning is part of the purchase decision
Water travels through reservoirs, pumps, channels, molds, and—in nugget machines—more mechanically complex systems than a simple ice tray. Mineral scale can slow production, affect taste, obstruct water flow, and contribute to false add-water or ice-full alerts. Stagnant water can also create odors.
Minimum maintenance expectations
- Use potable water and follow the model-specific water instructions.
- Empty stagnant water when the machine will sit unused for several days.
- Clean the reservoir, bin, scoop, drip area, and removable parts at the interval in the manual.
- Descale according to water hardness and the manufacturer’s schedule.
- Do not mix cleaning chemicals.
- Do not assume a self-clean cycle reaches every internal surface.
- Use only vinegar, bleach, citric acid, or branded cleaner if the model’s manual specifically permits it.
For current Opal models, GE recommends weekly reservoir cleaning, filter cleaning at least every two months, and descaling every two to three weeks depending on use and water hardness. The Govee Pro offers 10-minute quick cleaning and 30-minute deep descaling, but the owner still has to add cleaner, drain, rinse, wipe, and reassemble the unit. Chefman advertises a self-cleaning cycle. Reviewed reported no self-cleaning function for the EFIC255, although listings differ. The EFIC189’s current cleaning details should be verified from the exact manual.
Are the smart features worth paying for?
Smart controls are useful when they solve a practical problem:
- Scheduling: Have ice ready before a predictable event.
- Ice-full and add-water alerts: Avoid discovering an empty or stopped machine late.
- Cleaning reminders: Helpful for maintenance-intensive nugget models.
- Production history: Useful for judging whether the machine meets household demand.
- Remote control: Convenient, but not essential.
- Firmware updates: Potentially useful, although they add dependence on an app and cloud service.
GE’s SmartHQ-connected Opal models support scheduling, maintenance alerts, software updates, Alexa, and Google Home. Govee’s app adds scheduling, production history, remote cleaning and descaling, reminders, and voice control. Before buying, check whether the machine continues making ice if Wi-Fi or the app is unavailable, whether schedules use the correct time zone, and whether pairing is reliable. A physical control should remain usable for routine operation.
Counter space, clearance, and safe placement
Measure the appliance, water tank, drain connection, bin-opening path, and the space needed to lift out the basket. Also check the weight of the machine plus a full reservoir. The GE Opal Ultra requires four inches of side and rear clearance. The Govee Pro’s approximately 49-lb weight makes permanent placement more realistic than frequent carrying. The 17.44-lb Chefman is far easier to move.

Before first use:
- Place the unit on a level, load-bearing counter near a suitable outlet.
- Confirm clearance around vents and the compressor.
- Read the exact model manual, especially after transport.
- Perform the required initial cleaning and sanitizing procedure.
- Record where the drain outlets are before filling the tank.
- Drain the unit before moving it, keep it upright, and never lift it by a removable tank, bin, or scoop.
Side tanks and hoses can substantially change the real footprint. The GE Opal Mini’s narrow 8.6-inch body looks promising for compact kitchens, but its practical tank filling, drainage, and bin access need hands-on confirmation.
Common problems and what to check
The first ice is wet or slushy
Some slush during startup is normal, particularly on the Opal. GE says early Opal pieces should become standard nuggets after approximately 30 minutes. Persistent slush may indicate warm water, a hot room, poor ventilation, scale, low water flow, or a mechanical problem.
The machine says the bin is full too early
Check that the bin is fully seated, ice is not clumped around the sensor, and the chute is clear. A schedule in the app can also stop production unexpectedly. On the Opal, GE specifically identifies bin seating and schedules as possible causes of unexpected stopping.
It says add water when water is present
Possible causes include a blocked screen or filter, air in the water line, an unprimed pump, mineral deposits, an incorrectly seated tank, or water below the sensor threshold. Follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting sequence. Do not remove a required screen or approved filter: GE warns that operating without the required component can damage the machine and may void the warranty.
The machine is loud or develops a squeal
Compressor hum, fan noise, pump operation, vibration, and ice dropping can be normal. A new grinding sound, high-pitched squeal, leak, or abnormal vibration should be documented and reported rather than dismissed because the product has a low advertised dB rating.
There is an odor or off-flavor
Empty stagnant water, clean the removable parts and bin, run the manufacturer-approved cleaning process, and descale when required. Do not make absolute claims that a self-clean cycle prevents mold or contamination in every situation. Cleaning reduces buildup and hygiene risks; it does not replace regular draining and manual cleaning.
Who should skip a countertop ice maker?
- You need long-term ice storage: Buy or use a freezer.
- You want clear cocktail cubes: Choose a clear-ice or large-format machine.
- You need commercial continuous output: A home countertop appliance may not meet the demand or duty cycle.
- You dislike routine cleaning: Nugget machines can require weekly cleaning and frequent descaling.
- You need a genuinely portable appliance: Avoid a 35–50-lb machine, even if it has a handle.
- You have very limited counter depth or ventilation: Confirm clearance before buying, especially for the Opal Ultra and tall Frigidaire models.
Buying checklist
- Identify nugget, bullet, or clear ice before comparing brands.
- Look for the exact model number, not just a family name such as Opal 2.0 or EFIC.
- Compare first usable batch, one-hour yield, full-bin time, and bin capacity—not only pounds per day.
- Check room and water temperatures behind the manufacturer’s output claim.
- Measure width, depth, height, side-tank space, rear clearance, and bin access.
- Confirm the actual weight and whether you can safely move the filled unit.
- Read the full cleaning and descaling procedure before purchasing.
- Verify whether the exact model has self-cleaning, dishwasher-safe parts, and accessible drains.
- Check app requirements, offline operation, scheduling, and alert reliability if smart features matter.
- Verify the model-specific warranty, authorized seller, return period, filters, cleaner, and replacement parts.
- Check live availability immediately before ordering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are countertop ice makers worth it?
They are worthwhile if you want fresh ice on demand and have the counter space and patience for regular cleaning. They are not worthwhile if you need a freezer, commercial output, clear cocktail ice, or an appliance that can be ignored for weeks.

The GE Opal 2.0 Ultra is the strongest overall nugget recommendation, but nugget texture varies by machine and water conditions. Govee and Frigidaire also make nugget-style ice. None should be called identical to restaurant or Sonic ice without a consistent sensory test.
Does nugget ice melt faster than bullet ice?
Usually. Nugget ice is porous and has more surface area, so it generally melts faster than dense bullet ice. It is popular because that same structure makes it softer and chewable.
Can I put countertop-made ice in the freezer?
Yes, but it may freeze into clumps, especially nugget ice, and the texture may deteriorate. These machines are designed to make fresh batches, not to keep the storage bin frozen.
How often should I clean a countertop ice maker?
Follow the exact manual. GE recommends weekly reservoir cleaning for current Opal models and descaling every two to three weeks depending on water hardness and use. Govee provides quick-clean and deep-descaling cycles, but still requires manual draining, rinsing, and wiping.

Do not assume that distilled water is approved for every model. Use potable water and follow the exact manufacturer instructions. Filtered water may reduce mineral scale, but it does not eliminate cleaning.
Is a 60-lb-per-day ice maker overkill?
For many households, yes. The Govee Pro’s 60-lb claim is a maximum production figure, while its bin holds 3.5 lb. If you need only a few pounds daily, a smaller and less expensive machine may be more sensible.
How loud are countertop ice makers?
Noise depends on compressors, pumps, fans, ice drops, room acoustics, and measurement method. GE claims 44 dBA for the Opal Ultra and Govee claims about 40 dB for the Nugget Pro, but independent reviewers described the Frigidaire EFIC255 as noisy. Treat dB figures as manufacturer claims unless all models were measured at the same distance.
Is the GE Opal Mini a better buy than the Opal 2.0 Ultra?
It may be better for a small kitchen because it is only 8.6 inches wide and starts at a lower price. As of August 10, 2026, independent testing was still too sparse to rank it above the tested Opal Ultra. Confirm its real output, noise, texture, tank access, and cleaning burden before buying.

Which countertop ice maker is best for an RV, dorm, or office?
For ordinary hard ice, the compact Chefman is attractive because it weighs 17.44 lb, but its official page showed it out of stock when checked. The Frigidaire EFIC189 is a straightforward alternative if the exact model fits. For nugget ice, investigate the Opal Mini’s real clearance and weight before choosing it.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra if nugget texture, side-tank convenience, and a mature smart ecosystem matter most. Choose the Govee Nugget Pro for unusually high demand and app control, or the Frigidaire Gallery EFIC255 when its exact model is available at a meaningful discount. If you simply need fast, inexpensive ice, the Chefman Iceman Dual-Size or Frigidaire EFIC189 makes more sense than paying a premium for nugget ice. In every case, budget counter space, drainage, cleaning, and a freezer for overflow—because the machine’s bin will not keep its ice frozen indefinitely.
