The 4 Best Kitchen Drawer Organizers for Every Drawer Type

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best kitchen drawer organizer depends on the drawer you have. The OXO Good Grips Expandable Utensil Drawer Organizer is the most versatile choice for everyday utensils. For deep drawers containing dishes or cookware, The Container Store’s Bamboo Deep Drawer Organizers are more suitable. The narrow Joseph Joseph DrawerStore Compact Cutlery Organizer saves width in small kitchens, while Misen Modular Knife Storage is designed specifically for loose kitchen knives.

This is a research-based comparison of current specifications and published testing—not a claim that Bettesworth Construction independently tested these products. Good Housekeeping’s March 24, 2026 category roundup supplies the current category recommendations, while manufacturer pages provide dimensions, care instructions, and prices that can change over time.

Measure the drawer before choosing an organizer

Do not measure the cabinet opening or the decorative drawer front. Measure the usable interior of the drawer box with the drawer fully open. Organizers are sold by their external dimensions, so the inside measurements must be larger than the organizer itself.

VaeFae 6-Pack Adjustable Bamboo Drawer Dividers, Expandable Drawer Organizer for Kitchen Utensils, Clothes, Bathroom, Office – Fits Drawer Interiors 16.6" to 21.8"
  • Perfect Drawer Organizer: This is a simple and easy way to organize kitchen utensils or clothes; Keep everything neat, organized and access convenience
  • Widely Use: Our adjustable dividers expand from 16.6" to 21.8"; They can be installed in your kitchen, bedroom, baby's room, desk, bathroom and office drawers
  • Easy Installation & Removal: Each drawer divider has a built-in spring to keep them in place and just adjust the length of the divider to fit most drawers
  • Non-slip Design: Both ends of these bamboo drawer dividers are covered with built-in foam pads to protect your drawer from scratch and not easily looseness
  • High-quality Bamboo: All of Vaefae's drawer dividers are made of high-quality bamboo, more durable and easy to clean, just wipe down with a damp cloth
  1. Measure interior width. Measure from side to side at the narrowest point. Check the front, middle, and rear if the drawer tapers.
  2. Measure interior depth. Measure from the inside of the drawer front to the inside of the back panel. Do not assume the nominal cabinet depth is the usable drawer depth.
  3. Measure interior height. Measure from the drawer bottom to the lowest obstruction above it. A drawer’s front, slides, brackets, or cabinet framing can reduce the usable clearance.
  4. Inspect the hardware. Look for undermount or side-mounted slides, hinge components, screws, brackets, and drawer-front overlaps that may interfere with a tray or divider.
  5. Check the corners and bottom. Note curved corners, tapered sides, raised screw heads, and an uneven or unusually slick drawer bottom.
  6. Compare external dimensions, not just the range. An organizer that expands from 16 to 18 inches may fit the width but still be too deep or too tall. Expansion in one direction does not correct a mismatch in another.

A useful rule is to leave a small amount of clearance rather than forcing an organizer into the drawer. A tight fit can prevent the drawer from closing, rub against the cabinet, or make the organizer difficult to remove for cleaning. Good Housekeeping’s buying guidance also recommends measuring the interior and deciding between a one-piece tray and customizable containers based on the drawer’s shape and contents.

Which organizer fits your drawer?

  • Mixed utensils and small kitchen gadgets: Choose the OXO.
  • Bowls, plates, pans, or food-storage containers in a deep drawer: Choose the Container Store bamboo dividers.
  • A narrow drawer dedicated to forks, knives, and spoons: Choose the Joseph Joseph compact organizer.
  • Loose kitchen knives: Choose Misen, provided the drawer has enough length and height.
  • An unusually shaped gadget drawer: Use separate modular bins or adjustable dividers instead of forcing a fixed tray into the space.
  • A very shallow drawer: Verify the actual clearance before buying any tiered or tall organizer. Width alone is not enough.

1. OXO Good Grips Expandable Utensil Drawer Organizer: best overall

Best for: A standard-width drawer containing a mixture of flatware, measuring tools, peelers, can openers, and other everyday utensils.

The OXO is the best default choice when the drawer is neither unusually narrow nor especially deep. It combines an expandable main tray with two removable cutlery caddies, a large open section for irregular tools, and a removable cup for small items such as wine stoppers or corn holders. Its square-cornered layout is intended to reduce wasted gaps, and non-slip feet help keep it in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current OXO listing shows a price of $24.99. Good Housekeeping reports dimensions of 9.95 inches long by 16.65 inches wide by 2.55 inches high, expanding to 18.05 inches wide. That side-to-side expansion makes it useful for many existing drawers, but it does not solve a front-to-back mismatch.

Why it works

  • The open section handles long or irregular tools that do not fit a conventional five-compartment flatware tray.
  • The removable caddies can be lifted out for cleaning or carried to the table.
  • Non-slip feet are helpful on a smooth drawer bottom.
  • The expandable design is more forgiving than a fixed-width tray.

Limitations

  • At 2.55 inches high, it may not fit a shallow drawer once the drawer’s hardware and actual clearance are considered.
  • Two flatware caddies may not provide enough separation for a large household.
  • It is not intended for a deep drawer full of bowls, plates, or cookware.
  • The product should be treated as a hand-clean item unless the current care instructions specifically say otherwise; do not assume it is dishwasher-safe.

Buy it if: you want one flexible organizer for a mixed utensil drawer. Skip it if: your drawer is very narrow, very shallow, or dedicated to bulky cookware or knives.

2. The Container Store Bamboo Deep Drawer Organizers: best for deep drawers

Best for: Deep drawers holding bowls, plates, pans, food-storage containers, or other bulky kitchen equipment.

These are not a conventional tray. They are a two-pack of spring-loaded bamboo dividers that create custom zones inside a deep drawer. Instead of forcing dishes into predetermined compartments, you position the dividers around the objects you actually store.

Good Housekeeping lists each divider at 12.5 inches long by 0.625 inch wide by 4 inches high, expanding to 16.5 inches long. Rubber pads help prevent movement, and the spring-loaded design braces the divider against the drawer sides. The Container Store availability listing should be checked for the current product and stock status.

Why it works

  • You can place compartments around plates, bowls, cookware, or containers of different sizes.
  • The four-inch height helps keep taller and bulkier items from sliding into one another.
  • Spring tension avoids permanent installation, which is useful in rental kitchens or existing cabinetry.
  • Dividers make better use of deep vertical space than a shallow cutlery tray.

Limitations

  • Four inches is too tall for many top drawers.
  • A two-pack may not be enough for a wide drawer or a drawer requiring several separate zones.
  • Dividers create boundaries but do not form enclosed bins. Small items can still move under or around them.
  • Spring tension and rubber pads should be checked if the divider begins to shift under a heavy load.
  • Bamboo should be wiped and dried rather than soaked.

Buy it if: you need to separate large dishes or cookware in a deep drawer. Skip it if: you want a low-profile flatware tray or your drawer has less than four inches of usable height.

3. Joseph Joseph DrawerStore Compact Cutlery Organizer: best for narrow drawers

Best for: Narrow apartment or galley-kitchen drawers that cannot accommodate a conventional full-width flatware tray.

The Joseph Joseph DrawerStore Compact uses stacked, angled compartments so forks, knives, spoons, and other cutlery occupy less drawer width. The compartments include cutlery icons, and non-slip feet help prevent the narrow organizer from wandering when the drawer opens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official U.S. listing for the bamboo version gives dimensions of 5 inches wide by 15.75 inches deep by 2.5 inches high and calls for approximately 3.25 inches of minimum drawer height. That extra height requirement matters: the angled, tiered design needs more clearance than the nominal product height alone suggests. Good Housekeeping reports a narrower measurement of approximately 4.33 inches and a capacity of up to 24 pieces of cutlery, so shoppers should verify the dimensions for the exact version being purchased. Joseph Joseph also sells a compact tiered plastic version listed at $14, while the bamboo version is listed at $25.

Why it works

  • It uses vertical and angled storage instead of spreading flatware across the entire drawer.
  • Labels make it easier to return pieces to the correct compartment.
  • It leaves more width available for separate cooking tools in a narrow drawer.
  • Its small footprint can solve a problem that an expandable standard tray cannot.

Limitations

  • It is primarily a cutlery organizer, not a solution for tongs, ladles, whisks, or bulky gadgets.
  • Capacity is lower than that of a full-width tray.
  • Some users may find tiered compartments less immediately visible than side-by-side sections.
  • The bamboo version must be wiped, dried by hand, kept out of standing water, and oiled regularly according to the manufacturer.
  • Version-specific dimensions differ between listings, so measure the exact model before ordering.

Buy it if: your drawer is too narrow for a normal flatware organizer. Skip it if: you need to store large cooking utensils or prefer every item to lie flat and fully visible.

4. Misen Modular Knife Storage: best for in-drawer knives

Best for: A drawer dedicated to kitchen knives, especially when you want to remove a countertop block.

Misen’s system uses individual magnetic modules that connect to one another and sit horizontally in a drawer or on a countertop. The three-piece set contains two large pieces and one small piece. The official product page lists the set at $69, reduced from $74 at the time of the supplied research.

The large module measures 15.75 by 2.25 by 2.5 inches; the small module measures 6.57 by 1.65 by 2.08 inches. Misen’s care documentation says the large pieces accommodate knives up to 11 inches. The brand’s marketing has also referred to knives up to 12 inches, but the more conservative 11-inch figure is the safer planning number unless the manufacturer clarifies how blade length is measured.

Why it works

  • Separate storage reduces the chance of blades rattling against one another.
  • The modules can be arranged around the drawer and the knives in the collection.
  • The system works with knives from different brands, within its stated size limits.
  • Additional pieces can be added if the collection grows.
  • It removes the need for a countertop block, freeing work-surface space.

Limitations and safety checks

  • This is specialized knife storage, not a general utensil organizer.
  • It uses considerable drawer length and requires enough vertical clearance for both the module and knife handles.
  • The small piece is not recommended as a standalone component.
  • Measure the blade length, handle height, drawer depth, and opening clearance before ordering.
  • Use the system horizontally in a drawer or on a countertop. Misen specifically says not to install the modules vertically or on a wall.
  • It is hand-wash only and should not be soaked or placed in a dishwasher.

Buy it if: you need organized, separated storage for loose kitchen knives. Skip it if: you own only a couple of knives, have a shallow drawer, or need space for ordinary utensils as well.

Expandable tray or fixed organizer?

An expandable organizer is not automatically better. It is better when the drawer width is nonstandard and the organizer can use the available side-to-side space.

Expandable organizers

  • Advantages: fit a wider range of drawer widths, reduce side gaps, and work well in existing cabinetry where the drawer dimensions cannot be changed.
  • Disadvantages: expansion seams can collect crumbs, the tray may become less rigid when extended, and side-to-side adjustment does nothing for a drawer that is too deep or too shallow.

The OXO expands from 16.65 to 18.05 inches in width. For a very wide drawer, it may leave large unused areas; OXO sells a separate Large Expandable Utensil Organizer that expands from 15.5 to 22 inches and is 2.5 inches high.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fixed organizers

  • Advantages: usually have a simpler, more rigid structure and a predictable compartment layout.
  • Disadvantages: can leave dead space when the drawer dimensions do not match and may not accommodate unusually long or bulky tools.

For a drawer with unusual corners or changing contents, several small modular bins may be more useful than either a fixed tray or an expandable one.

Bamboo versus plastic

Material Advantages Care and trade-offs
Bamboo Warmer appearance and a furniture-like finish; suits visible cabinetry. Wipe and dry promptly, avoid soaking, and follow oiling instructions where required. Repeated moisture exposure can lead to staining, warping, or mold.
Plastic Generally easy to wipe clean, often less expensive, and commonly available with feet or liners. May look less premium and can have seams or crevices that collect crumbs. Do not assume dishwasher safety unless the product’s instructions confirm it.

Joseph Joseph explicitly recommends wiping and drying its bamboo organizer and oiling it regularly. OXO describes removable trays that simplify cleaning, but its current product information does not establish that the organizer is dishwasher-safe. In either material, remove crumbs and grease before they accumulate in corners or expansion joints.

How to keep the organizer from sliding

  1. Clean the drawer first. Dust, oil, and crumbs reduce friction between feet or pads and the drawer bottom.
  2. Choose built-in stability features. OXO uses non-slip feet; the Container Store dividers include rubber pads and spring tension; Joseph Joseph includes non-slip feet.
  3. Use the correct size. An undersized tray can shift even when it has rubber feet. A divider that does not brace firmly against both sides can move under load.
  4. Distribute weight. Do not place every heavy tool in one compartment or at one end of a modular system.
  5. Add a removable non-slip liner if necessary. This is preferable to permanent adhesive, particularly in a rental or on finished wood, unless the organizer’s manufacturer recommends adhesive.
  6. Recheck after use. Non-slip does not mean immovable under every load, drawer surface, or opening speed.

Organize by use and location

The most efficient drawer layout is based on how the kitchen is used, not only on object names.

  • Place measuring spoons, peelers, thermometers, and other prep tools near the primary preparation surface.
  • Store tongs, spatulas, and ladles near the cooktop, preferably in an open section long enough to prevent handles from protruding.
  • Keep knives in dedicated separated storage rather than mixing them with loose utensils.
  • Move rarely used tools to a lower or deeper drawer.
  • Do not mix small gadgets with long utensils unless the organizer provides a separate open compartment.

This approach follows Good Housekeeping’s organization guidance: group items by type or function and place frequently used tools near the area where they are used.

Common fit and use failures

The organizer fits the width but the drawer will not close

Height is the likely problem. Drawer fronts, slides, and internal cabinet framing can reduce clearance. Tiered organizers may require more height than their nominal dimensions indicate. Measure from the drawer bottom to the actual obstruction and compare that measurement with the manufacturer’s minimum clearance.

The drawer is narrow but unusually deep

A conventional tray may leave most of the width unused. Use the Joseph Joseph for flatware, then add separate narrow bins for cooking tools. Use Misen only if the drawer is being dedicated to knives, since its long modules consume much of the available depth.

The drawer is very wide

One small tray may slide or leave large dead zones. Consider OXO’s larger organizer, two organizers, or a modular arrangement. The regular OXO model should not be treated as a solution for every wide drawer.

Small objects disappear around dividers

The Container Store product is a divider system, not a collection of enclosed bins. It is better for bowls, plates, pans, and containers than for loose measuring spoons or small gadgets. Use bins for those items.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Knives are awkward or unsafe in the drawer

Confirm that the blade length and handle height fit the system, that the drawer opens without exposing a blade edge to your hand, and that blades remain separated. Misen’s modules are intended for horizontal use; they should not be treated as a wall-mounted magnetic strip.

How these recommendations were assessed

The comparison considers the criteria that matter most in an existing kitchen drawer:

Best Value
Lifewit Utensil Organizer for Kitchen Drawers, Expandable Utensil Tray
  • Maximum Organization: Featuring 3 large compartments (13.4"L × 3.5"D) and 2 expandable slots on the side (14"L × 4.7"D), this utensil organizer offers ample space for storing most cooking utensils in the kitchen, such as spatulas, ladles, tongs, utensil sets, and whisks. Please check drawer dimensions before purchase
  • Expandable and Adjustable: The utensil organizer for kitchen drawers can be expanded from 3 slots to 5 slots, offering extra storage space for utensils. It is adjustable to fit different drawer sizes, ranging from 13 to 22.4 inches wide. When folded, it measures 13" x 15" x 2", but expands to 22.4" x 15" x 2" for added space
  • Safe to Use: Crafted from BPA-free PP material, this cutlery drawer organizer guarantees the safety of all your utensils, silverware, and flatware. Cleaning is a breeze as well - simply rinse with water to remove stains
  • User-Friendly Design: With its solid bottom panel, attached dividers, and sturdy support frame, this cooking utensil organizer ensures that your utensils do not slide under the dividers. The curved grooves ensure convenient access to utensils, while the unique edge design allows for effortless movement
  • Efficient and Versatile Storage: This 5 compartment flatware organizer for drawer categorizes and neatly stores utensils, making it easy to pick up what you need. Not only for kitchen utensils, it can also be used in drawers in other rooms to store various small items
  • Fit: width, depth, height, expansion direction, and clearance around drawer hardware.
  • Stability: non-slip feet, rubber pads, spring tension, and resistance to shifting.
  • Capacity: compartment size, number of zones, and ability to hold long or irregular tools.
  • Accessibility: whether items are visible and retrievable without removing other items.
  • Cleaning: removable components, crevices, hand-wash requirements, and moisture sensitivity.
  • Material: plastic rigidity, bamboo care, divider tension, and modular-component security.
  • Value: purchase price, number of pieces included, and whether the system solves a problem a cheaper tray cannot.

Good Housekeeping’s current category coverage identifies the four use-case leaders, and The Kitchn provides additional published comparison coverage for adjustable drawer dividers. Manufacturer pages were used for current product dimensions, care instructions, configuration, and product claims. Product claims such as Joseph Joseph’s capacity of up to 24 pieces and Misen’s 11-inch knife guidance should be understood as attributed claims, not independent measurements by this article.

Final buying decision

Choose the organizer that matches the drawer rather than the one with the broadest marketing claim:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose OXO for the most versatile mixed-utensil drawer.
  • Choose The Container Store bamboo dividers for a deep drawer containing dishes, cookware, or containers.
  • Choose Joseph Joseph when a narrow drawer cannot fit a standard cutlery tray.
  • Choose Misen when the drawer’s primary job is storing loose kitchen knives horizontally and separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the OXO organizer in any kitchen drawer?

No. Its width expands to 18.05 inches, but its 2.55-inch height and 9.95-inch depth still have to fit the drawer’s usable interior. Measure around the slides, brackets, and drawer front before buying.

Are bamboo drawer organizers hard to maintain?

They require more moisture control than plastic. Wipe bamboo organizers clean, dry them promptly, avoid soaking, and follow the manufacturer’s oiling instructions. This is especially important in drawers where damp utensils or spills are common.

Is a magnetic knife organizer safe in a drawer?

A dedicated system can keep blades separated, but safety depends on correct fit and use. Verify blade length, handle clearance, drawer height, and opening clearance. Misen’s system is intended for horizontal drawer or countertop use, not vertical wall mounting.

What is the best way to stop a drawer organizer from moving?

Start with a clean, dry drawer and choose an organizer with non-slip feet, rubber pads, or spring-loaded tension. Use a removable non-slip liner if needed, and distribute heavy items instead of loading one side.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

There is no single best kitchen drawer organizer for every cabinet. OXO is the strongest all-purpose choice, The Container Store’s bamboo dividers suit deep storage, Joseph Joseph makes the most sense in a narrow cutlery drawer, and Misen addresses the separate problem of loose knives. Measure the drawer box—including height and hardware clearance—before ordering any of them.
