11 Easy Ways to Stop Static Cling in Your Clothes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Static cling usually comes from a combination of fabric friction, very dry air, and overdrying in the dryer. The quickest reliable improvement is to dry clothes for less time at a care-label-approved temperature, then use a little moisture or a clothing-safe anti-static product if the garment is already clinging.

Synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and fleece tend to retain electrostatic charge longer than many natural fibers, so they often need more careful drying. No single method works for every fabric, and the garment’s care label should always take priority.

Why clothes get static cling

When fabrics rub against one another, or against skin and other surfaces, electrons can transfer between them. The fabrics then carry opposite electrical charges and attract each other. Friction is part of the process, but the amount of moisture in the fabric and the type of fiber also matter.

Static is especially common in a hot dryer because tumbling creates repeated friction while heat removes moisture. Dry air is a poor conductor, so charge remains on the fabric instead of dissipating. This is why cling often becomes worse during winter heating or in rooms with unusually low humidity. Research and textile guidance identify nylon and polyester as particularly prone to retaining charge in dry conditions. The University of Tennessee textile guide and North Carolina State textile research explain the role of fiber type, dryness, and antistatic finishes.

The practical lesson is straightforward: reduce overdrying, friction, and extreme dryness before simply adding more laundry product. The American Cleaning Institute also identifies synthetic fabrics and overdrying as important contributors.

11 ways to stop static cling

1. Stop the dryer before clothes become bone-dry

Best for: Polyester shirts and dresses, leggings, hosiery, synthetic blends, and winter laundry.

How to do it: Remove the load when the garments are dry to the touch but still cool and minimally damp, then hang them immediately to finish drying. Do not leave a slightly damp load compressed in a basket for hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overdrying allows tumbling and fabric-to-fabric friction to continue while the fibers become increasingly dry. Stopping a little earlier can reduce the charge that builds up. The American Cleaning Institute’s laundering guidance specifically recommends avoiding overdrying.

Expected result: Less crackling and cling as soon as the clothes come out of the dryer.

Trade-off: Finishing on a hanger may produce more wrinkles, particularly in cotton and linen. If the garment remains genuinely wet rather than just minimally damp, use a little more drying time.

If it fails: Reduce the load size and use a shorter or automatic cycle rather than immediately adding more softener or dryer sheets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Use lower heat or a moisture-sensing automatic cycle

Best for: Dryer loads that repeatedly emerge hot, stiff, or staticky.

How to do it: Select the lowest temperature approved by the care label that will dry the load effectively. If your dryer offers an automatic or moisture-sensing cycle, use it instead of a long timed cycle that may continue tumbling after the clothes are dry.

Moisture sensors can adapt the drying time and help limit overdrying. Whirlpool describes moisture-sensing cycles as a way to reduce unnecessary drying. Lower heat can help, but it does not eliminate static by itself.

Important limitation: The goal is less total overdrying, not simply the lowest temperature. A low-temperature cycle that runs for a very long time can still leave clothes excessively dry and charged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If it fails: Check whether the cycle is running longer than needed, the load is too large, or synthetics are mixed with bulky items. Remove the clothes as soon as they are dry.

3. Air-dry the garments most prone to static

Best for: Synthetics, delicate clothing, items that do not need tumble drying, and people who prefer to avoid fragrance or fabric coatings.

How to do it: Hang garments on a rack or hanger, or lay them flat when the care label requires it. Air-drying removes the repeated tumbling and friction that commonly generate charge.

Both Maytag and Whirlpool identify air-drying as a way to reduce dryer-related static.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs: Air-drying can take longer, leave some fabrics stiff, and create wrinkles. Heavy knits can stretch if hung, so lay them flat when instructed. Drying clothes indoors also adds moisture to the room, which may be undesirable in an already damp home.

If static remains: The dryer was not necessarily the only cause. Very dry indoor air, a synthetic fiber blend, or friction while the garment is being worn can still create cling. Try humidity control or a light mist on the garment.

In the United States, check the care label for whether machine drying is permitted and which temperature is allowed. The FTC care-label rule is U.S.-specific; other countries may use different labeling requirements.

4. Do not overload the dryer

Best for: Loads that take an unusually long time to dry or emerge tightly packed and staticky.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to do it: Dry fewer garments at a time, leaving enough room for the clothes to separate and tumble. If the drum is crammed full or garments are still bunched together at the end, divide the load.

An oversized load increases contact and rubbing between garments and can prevent moisture from leaving evenly. Whirlpool links oversized loads with increased friction and static, while the American Cleaning Institute recommends avoiding overloaded laundry machines.

Expected result: Better separation, more even drying, and less friction.

If it fails: Do not simply add extra dryer sheets to a crowded load. First reduce the load, shorten the cycle if appropriate, and separate synthetic garments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Separate synthetic fabrics from natural fibers

Best for: Polyester, nylon, acrylic, fleece, microfiber clothing, and synthetic linings that repeatedly cling to cotton or other garments.

How to do it: When static is a recurring problem, dry nylon, polyester, acrylic, and similar synthetics separately from cotton, linen, and other natural-fiber items. Also consider keeping very lightweight synthetics away from bulky, rough, or lint-shedding items.

Synthetic fibers tend to retain electrostatic charge longer in dry conditions. Maytag recommends separating laundry by material, and textile research supports the importance of fiber type and humidity.

Expected result: Less charge transfer between fabrics and less lint-related friction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If it fails: Focus on drying time and indoor humidity. Separating fabrics helps, but it cannot compensate for a load that is badly overdried.

6. Use a dryer sheet when the fabric allows it

Best for: Ordinary clothing where a light softening coating, fragrance, and a disposable product are acceptable.

How to do it: Place a dryer sheet in the wet load at the beginning of the drying cycle and discard it afterward. Follow the package directions for load size; Downy says one sheet is generally sufficient for most loads, with additional sheets potentially needed for large loads.

During heated tumbling, the sheet transfers conditioning and anti-static agents to the fabric. That coating can reduce friction and help counteract charge buildup. The American Cleaning Institute explains how fabric softeners and dryer sheets work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat dryer sheets as universal. Check the garment and product instructions before using them on:

  • Children’s sleepwear labeled flame-resistant.
  • Moisture-wicking or performance clothing.
  • Microfiber cleaning cloths.
  • Water-repellent fabrics.
  • Clothing worn by someone sensitive to fragrance or residue.

Some modern formulas may be compatible with certain athleticwear or microfiber, but the safest rule is to follow the garment manufacturer’s instructions. Maytag, Downy, and the American Cleaning Institute all identify fabric-specific cautions.

If it fails: Check for overdrying or overloading before increasing the number of sheets. More product will not correct excessive friction and may leave a waxy or greasy-feeling coating.

7. Add liquid fabric softener in the final rinse

Best for: Washable everyday fabrics for which a softening coating is permitted and desired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to do it: Measure the product according to its label and put it in the washer’s fabric-softener dispenser so it releases during the final rinse. Do not pour concentrated softener directly onto dry clothing. For machines without a dispenser, follow the product’s instructions for when to add it; Downy provides separate directions for front-load, top-load, and non-dispenser machines.

Liquid softener conditions and lubricates fibers, reducing friction and helping limit static. It acts in the washer’s rinse phase, unlike a dryer sheet, which transfers product during heated tumbling.

Trade-offs: Softener can leave fragrance or residue and may reduce the performance of specialized fabrics. It can also affect the absorbency of some towels and microfiber items.

Safety exception: Do not use it generically on children’s sleepwear labeled flame-resistant. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission explains that covered children’s sleepwear carries chemical-care warnings intended to protect flame resistance. Follow the sleepwear label exactly.

If clothes feel coated: Stop or reduce softener use, clean the dispenser, and return to the product’s measured dose. If absorbency has declined, follow the towel or microfiber manufacturer’s laundering instructions rather than adding more softener.

8. Add a clean, damp washcloth near the end of the cycle

Best for: A load already in the dryer when you notice crackling or cling.

How to do it: Wring out a clean washcloth or small towel so it is damp rather than soaking wet. Add it during the final 10–20 minutes of the cycle, then remove the clothes promptly. This timing comes from Whirlpool’s static-reduction guidance.

The small amount of moisture can make the air and fibers more conductive, helping charge dissipate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitations: This is a temporary moisture intervention, not a cure for chronic overdrying. A soaking-wet towel may extend the cycle and leave some garments unevenly dry. Do not use it to override the garment’s drying instructions.

If it fails: Use a shorter cycle or remove the load earlier next time. If the problem occurs in every load, address the dryer routine rather than repeatedly adding damp cloths.

9. Use the dryer’s Static Reduce or steam feature

Best for: Owners of dryers with a labeled Static Reduce, Steam, Refresh, or comparable setting.

How to do it: Select the feature according to the appliance manual. Do not assume that all steam or refresh cycles use the same amount of water or are intended for the same load size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some dryers add a small amount of moisture while tumbling; others combine water mist, tumbling, and moisture sensing. Maytag and Whirlpool describe these appliance-specific options.

Important limitation: The correct load size is model-dependent. Maytag notes that certain steam cycles are designed for approximately 5–12 dry items, and that smaller loads may develop wet spots or condensation. Do not apply that range to every dryer.

If clothes become visibly wet: Stop using the setting until you check the manual. Use the manufacturer’s recommended load size and cycle rather than adding extra drying time automatically.

10. Apply a purpose-made anti-static spray or wrinkle releaser

Best for: A targeted fix for one garment, especially immediately before wearing it.

How to do it: Choose a product labeled for clothing and follow its application instructions. Spray lightly and evenly, spot-test an inconspicuous area when advised, and let the garment dry before wearing it. As one example, Downy instructs users to spray its wrinkle-releasing product from about 6–10 inches away.

Do not assume that every wrinkle releaser, fabric refresher, or household cleaner is an anti-static product. Avoid saturating fabric, follow aerosol and ventilation warnings, and keep sprays away from open flames or heat sources unless the label explicitly permits use.

Performance varies substantially among products. Consumer Reports testing found that some anti-static sprays performed little better than water, so a clothing-specific label does not guarantee equal effectiveness.

If it fails: Stop using it if it leaves spots, discoloration, stiffness, or an odor. Test any replacement on a hidden seam first and return to a light water mist or damp cloth for a lower-residue emergency option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Neutralize a garment that is already clinging

Best for: A dress sticking to your legs, a skirt clinging to tights, or a synthetic shirt crackling just before you leave.

Lightly mist the fabric

Use a clean spray bottle to apply a very light mist, especially to the inside of a skirt, dress, or synthetic shirt. Let it dry before sitting on furniture or putting on another layer. Moisture increases conductivity and can reduce electrostatic buildup; a peer-reviewed study found that retained moisture reduced electrostatic potential in both cotton and nylon fabrics. See the Boise State study on moisture and electrostatic potential.

Wipe the clingy area with a damp cloth

A slightly damp cloth or paper towel provides a quick, localized fix. Use a gentle pass rather than vigorous rubbing, and do not leave delicate fabric visibly wet.

Run a metal hanger over the garment

Run a metal hanger gently over the garment’s surface or between two clinging layers. It can discharge existing charge, but it does not prevent new charge from forming as the clothing continues rubbing. Maytag and Whirlpool both list a metal hanger as an immediate static-removal technique.

Moisturize exposed skin if necessary

If dry legs or arms are making the cling worse, apply a small amount of hand or body lotion and let it absorb fully before dressing. This is a temporary skin-and-fabric measure, not a substitute for correcting the laundry routine.

Control indoor humidity

If static is noticeably worse during winter heating or in an air-conditioned room, check the humidity rather than running a humidifier continuously. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends indoor relative humidity around 30–50%. Avoid exceeding 50%, since excessive humidity can encourage biological growth and condensation.

Measure humidity with a hygrometer. If the air is very dry, use a clean, properly maintained humidifier and monitor the reading. The EPA advises emptying and drying portable humidifiers daily and cleaning them every third day; its humidifier guidance explains the maintenance steps.

Humidity may reduce static, but it will not correct an overloaded or overdried dryer load. If condensation appears or the reading rises above 50%, turn down or stop the humidifier and improve ventilation.

Dryer sheets, liquid softener, dryer balls, or no products?

There is no universally best option. Choose based on the fabric, your tolerance for fragrance and residue, and whether you want a disposable or reusable product.

Option Static control Residue or fragrance Compatibility and trade-offs Reusable?
Dryer sheet Often effective when compatible May leave a coating or scent Check instructions for sleepwear, performance clothing, microfiber, and water-repellent fabrics No
Liquid fabric softener Often effective through reduced fiber friction May leave a coating or scent Use only in the final rinse and follow fabric instructions; may affect absorbency and specialized finishes No
Wool or other dryer balls May help separate clothing, but static results are inconsistent Usually little or no added fragrance Do not assume they replace overdrying control or a compatible anti-static product Yes
Damp washcloth Useful as a temporary moisture boost No product residue Use near the end of the cycle; a soaking-wet cloth can extend drying Yes
No added product Can work well with smaller loads, shorter cycles, air-drying, and humidity control None A good choice for fragrance-sensitive readers, but fabric type and dry air still matter Not applicable

Dryer balls may separate clothes and reduce clumping, but independent testing is mixed. Good Housekeeping has reported that wool dryer balls do not reliably eliminate static, and CHOICE testing found little reason to buy dryer balls for energy savings. Treat them as an optional reusable accessory, not a guaranteed solution.

What not to use automatically

Vinegar

Some lifestyle articles recommend adding half a cup of distilled white vinegar to the rinse cycle. That advice is disputed. One syndicated article makes that recommendation, but Whirlpool advises against adding vinegar to the washing machine because repeated acidity may damage some rubber components. Consumer Reports has also advised caution about possible hose and seal damage.

Do not treat vinegar as a universal static solution. Check your washer manufacturer’s instructions first, and never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hairspray

Hairspray is not a purpose-made fabric-care product. It can leave residue, affect the appearance or feel of some fabrics, and introduce an avoidable flammability concern. Use a clothing-labeled anti-static spray instead, or use a light water mist.

Aluminum-foil balls

Foil balls are a popular laundry hack, but they are not a dependable recommendation. A report of Good Housekeeping testing found equal static in loads with and without aluminum-foil balls. See The Kitchn’s report of that testing.

Safety-pin dryer tricks

Safety pins are sometimes promoted as a way to discharge static, but they do not address overdrying, friction, dry air, or synthetic fibers. They also add a loose metal object to a rotating appliance. Use a properly selected cycle, a smaller load, or a purpose-made appliance feature instead.

Unapproved softener on specialty fabrics

Do not use dryer sheets or liquid softener simply because a garment is staticky. They may interfere with moisture-wicking performance, microfiber absorbency, water-repellent finishes, or the flame resistance of labeled children’s sleepwear. The garment manufacturer’s instructions take priority over general laundry advice.

Special cases

A polyester dress is clinging to your legs

For an immediate fix, lightly mist the inside of the dress or wipe the inner hem with a damp cloth. Run a metal hanger over the fabric, then let it dry before dressing fully. Lotion may help if dry skin is contributing, but allow it to absorb completely. For future washes, use a smaller synthetic-only load, avoid overdrying, and air-dry or use a compatible anti-static product.

Static continues after air-drying

Air-drying removes dryer tumbling but does not guarantee zero static. A polyester or nylon garment can still hold charge in very dry air or develop cling through friction against skin and other garments. Check the room’s humidity, separate synthetics, and use a light mist or clothing-safe spray when needed.

Children’s flame-resistant sleepwear

Follow the sleepwear label exactly. In the United States, flame-resistant children’s sleepwear includes care warnings related to preserving its protective properties. Do not generically recommend fabric softener or dryer sheets for these garments unless the label specifically permits them. When in doubt, use the approved temperature and drying method without added softening products.

Activewear and moisture-wicking clothing

Performance fabrics may depend on a particular surface finish or fiber structure to move moisture. Avoid assuming that ordinary softener or dryer sheets are suitable. Follow the brand’s instructions, and generally start with air-drying, a care-label-approved low-temperature cycle, and load or humidity changes.

Microfiber cloths and towels

Softener or dryer-sheet residue can affect absorbency in some microfiber and towel products. Check the manufacturer’s instructions before using either. If absorbency declines, stop the product and launder the item according to its care instructions.

Water-repellent clothing

Rainwear and other water-repellent garments may lose performance if coated with an incompatible softener or dryer-sheet residue. Follow the garment brand’s care instructions and use only products approved for that finish.

When static keeps coming back

Use this troubleshooting order rather than adding more product:

  1. Check for overdrying. Remove clothes sooner, shorten a timed cycle, or use moisture sensing.
  2. Check the load size. Divide a crowded load so garments can separate and tumble.
  3. Check the fabric mix. Separate synthetic-heavy loads from cotton, bulky items, and rough or lint-shedding fabrics.
  4. Check the room humidity. Use a hygrometer and aim for approximately 30–50% relative humidity, not a constantly running humidifier.
  5. Check product buildup. If clothing feels greasy, stiff, or coated, reduce or stop softener and dryer sheets, clean the dispenser, and follow dosing instructions.
  6. Check the garment itself. If only one item is affected, suspect its fiber blend, lining, dry-cleaning finish, or garment-specific treatment rather than the entire laundry routine.
  7. Check the appliance setting. If a steam or Static Reduce cycle leaves wet spots, use the manufacturer’s recommended load size and cycle.

If static returns while the garment is being worn, use the temporary measures—light mist, damp cloth, metal hanger, or an approved anti-static spray—but treat them as symptom relief. The durable fix is usually a combination of less overdrying, less friction, a suitable product or no product at all, and reasonable indoor humidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to remove clothes from the dryer while they are slightly damp?

They should be dry to the touch but not bone-dry, then hung immediately to finish drying. Do not leave a slightly damp load compressed in a basket, where it can remain damp for hours and develop an odor or mildew.

Does a lower dryer temperature always stop static?

No. Lower heat can reduce one contributor, but a long cycle can still overdry clothing. Use the lowest care-label-approved temperature together with an appropriate cycle length, a reasonable load size, and prompt removal.

Are wool dryer balls a reliable replacement for dryer sheets?

Not reliably. Dryer balls may separate clothing and reduce clumping, but independent testing has found mixed results for static reduction. Use them as an optional reusable accessory rather than a guaranteed anti-static treatment.

Should I use a humidifier for static cling?

Only if indoor air is genuinely dry. Measure humidity with a hygrometer and keep relative humidity around 30–50%, avoiding levels above 50%. Maintain a portable humidifier by emptying and drying it daily and cleaning it every third day, following EPA guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The most dependable routine is simple: avoid overloading and overdrying, use a care-label-approved low or automatic cycle, separate synthetic fabrics when needed, and air-dry static-prone garments when practical. For a garment already clinging, use a light water mist, a damp cloth, a metal hanger, or a compatible clothing anti-static spray. Treat softeners, dryer sheets, and specialty-fabric products as optional—and always follow the garment label.
