38% rule

The 38% Rule in Room Acoustics: Where to Place Your Listening Seat

The 38% rule is a useful first position for a listening seat—not a promise of perfect sound. Calculate it, then compare and verify the result in your room.

The 38% rule gives you a practical starting point for placing a primary listening seat: measure the room’s front-to-back length, then put your head about 38% of that distance from the front wall behind the speakers. In a 4-metre room, that is about 1.52 metres. It is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee of the best sound; room geometry, speaker placement and the response at the seat all matter.

What the 38% rule means

The rule describes the listener’s position along the room’s length. Measure from the front wall—the wall behind the speakers—to the listening position, rather than measuring from the rear wall or calculating 38% of the room’s width. The position is a first trial for the listener’s head, not a complete speaker-placement plan. GIK Acoustics describes it as a starting point, and RealTraps likewise recommends checking the result in the room.

Calculate a starting position

  1. Measure the usable front-to-back distance between the room’s front and rear boundaries.
  2. Multiply that length by 0.38.
  3. Measure the result from the front wall to locate the listening position.

For example, 4 m × 0.38 = 1.52 m. This calculation identifies a place to try; it does not predict or measure the room’s frequency response.

Why seat position affects bass

Sound reflecting between room boundaries can form resonances called room modes. Axial modes involve two parallel surfaces; tangential and oblique modes involve more surfaces. Room dimensions determine the frequencies at which these modes occur, and their peaks and nulls can make some bass frequencies sound stronger or weaker at particular locations. RoomModes explains the different types of room modes.

Moving the listening position changes how strongly those effects are heard at the seat; it does not change the room’s dimensions or the modes themselves. The 38% position is commonly presented as a useful lengthwise compromise, including avoiding the exact midpoint, but it is not established as the flattest position for every room. Sonarworks illustrates how listening position relates to modal peaks and nulls.

A rough estimate of the first axial mode

For a room dimension of L metres, Sonarworks gives this approximate first axial-mode formula: frequency (Hz) = 344 m/s ÷ (2 × L m). The 344 m/s value is the approximate speed of sound used in the formula. This estimates a mode associated with one room dimension; it does not tell you how loud that mode will be at a particular seat.

Set up the seat and speakers together

Use the calculated position as one candidate within a symmetrical listening arrangement. Where the room allows, place the seat on the left-right centerline and arrange the speakers symmetrically around it. The goal is to consider seat position, speaker geometry and room boundaries together, not to treat 38% as a stand-alone acoustic design. Genelec’s placement guidance discusses symmetry, listening position and room boundaries.

Genelec advises keeping monitors at least one metre from walls. Treat that as the manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal requirement for every room or speaker. Furniture, room shape and usable space may constrain placement, so assess the arrangement that is practical in your space. Stands can make small monitor-position adjustments easier, but they are not required by the 38% rule. Sonarworks discusses monitor positioning and stands.

Fine-tune and verify the position

  1. Start at the 38% position and listen to familiar material with consistent bass.
  2. Move the seat forward or backward in small increments, comparing bass balance at each location. Keep the left-right arrangement symmetrical where feasible.
  3. If you can measure room response, compare the candidate positions at the listening seat. A calibrated measurement microphone is one tool for accurate in-room measurements; the measurement describes what is happening at that location, rather than proving the rule itself.
  4. Choose a position based on the response you hear or measure, along with practical room constraints. Do not assume the calculated spot must win.

Sonarworks describes calibrated microphones for room measurement, while Studio Music Tools’ September 14, 2026 explanation also frames 38% as a starting position to verify.

What the rule cannot fix

A seat change can improve the response experienced at that seat, but it cannot correct every room-related problem. Positioning is a first step; persistent issues may call for additional speaker-placement work or room-specific acoustic treatment. Treatment should be chosen for the actual problem: the rule alone does not establish that generic panels will solve low-frequency peaks or nulls. GIK Acoustics notes the continuing role of treatment.
