Short answer: For most apartment and small-kitchen cooks, the Ninja Sizzle GR101 is the strongest low-smoke choice. It combines a claimed 500°F maximum temperature with interchangeable grill and griddle plates, a perforated splatter lid, and a broad 14-inch cooking surface. Choose the Cuisinart Griddler FIVE GR-5BNAS instead if versatility matters most, or the Hamilton Beach Searing Grill 25360/25361 if you want a simpler, value-focused grill and can tolerate more smoke.
None of these appliances is literally smoke-free. They are electric indoor countertop grills designed to reduce grease, splatter, and smoke compared with some open-flame or skillet cooking. Fatty meat, excess oil, sugary marinades, residue, and maximum heat can still produce visible smoke and indoor air pollution.

1. Best overall low-smoke indoor grill: Ninja Sizzle GR101
The Ninja Sizzle GR101 is the best fit for readers whose priority is convincing browning with a reasonable chance of keeping smoke under control. Its open-grill format feels more like grilling than cooking in a pan, but its covered design helps contain grease and splatter.
#1 Best Overall
- INTERCHANGEABLE GRILL & GRIDDLE PLATES: From char-grilled strip steaks to sizzling fajita veggies, unlock delicious flavors any time of the day using the interchangeable grill and griddle plates.
- 500°F MAX HEAT: Reach temperatures of up to 500°F for high-heat grilling and searing and get better char-grilled marks right from your kitchen. (vs. PowerXL Smokeless Grill Elite).
- EDGE-TO-EDGE COOKING: No hot spots. No cold spots. Just even, edge-to-edge heating for perfectly cooked dishes every time.
- LOW SMOKE GRILL: The perforated mesh lid helps to control smoke in your kitchen and reduce splatter, and the plates are equipped with high walls and grease catches for a pleasant cooking experience.
- FAMILY-SIZED CAPACITY: The 14’’ grill and griddle plates fit a half dozen burgers and pancakes to feed a family of 4-6 people.
Why it stands out
- Ninja advertises a maximum temperature of 500°F.
- It uses 1,450 watts at 120 volts.
- The cooking surface is approximately 14 inches across, with a claimed capacity of about six burgers or pancakes.
- Interchangeable grill and griddle plates handle steaks, burgers, vegetables, pancakes, eggs, quesadillas, and other flat-top foods.
- A perforated mesh lid, high plate walls, grease catches, and grease channels are designed to reduce splatter and help manage drippings.
- The appliance measures approximately 14.72 × 15.16 × 6.1 inches, weighs 7.8 pounds, and carries a one-year warranty according to Ninja.
Outdoor Life selected the Ninja Sizzle as its best overall smokeless indoor grill, citing its high heat, interchangeable plates, even cooking surface, and grease-catch design. TechGearLab separately reported excellent heat consistency and strong nonstick performance, with limited smoke at the upper end of the temperature range. Those are useful signals, but the Outdoor Life page displays an update date of December 28, 2023 despite its 2026 labeling; it should not be treated as fresh 2026 testing without qualification.
What it cooks well
The Ninja is the most natural choice of the three for steaks, burgers, chicken breasts, fish, and vegetables that benefit from an open surface and grill marks. The griddle plate expands its usefulness to pancakes, eggs, hash browns, shrimp, and small foods that could fall through grill openings. The 500°F claim gives it more headroom for browning than the Hamilton Beach, although a high empty-plate temperature does not mean the entire surface stays at 500°F after cold food is added.
Limitations
The 14-inch surface is useful for a couple or a small household, but it is not automatically a four-adult, one-batch solution. The manufacturer’s capacity claims are not standardized, so food may need to be arranged with space between pieces for even browning. A high-fat ribeye, bacon, sausage, or skin-on chicken can still smoke at maximum heat. TechGearLab found that the plates required gentler hand washing, even though the perforated lid could go in the dishwasher.
Buy it if: you want the best balance of high heat, open-grill cooking, interchangeable plates, and smoke-reducing design.
Skip it if: you need a true contact grill, a built-in temperature probe, a very large family-size surface, or an appliance whose removable plates are definitely dishwasher-safe according to the exact manual.
2. Best versatile grill and griddle: Cuisinart Griddler FIVE GR-5BNAS
The Cuisinart Griddler FIVE is the better purchase when an indoor grill needs to replace several appliances. It can function as a contact grill, panini press, full grill, full griddle, or half grill and half griddle. That makes it especially useful for households that want pancakes in the morning, grilled cheese at lunch, burgers at dinner, and a flat-top surface for eggs or vegetables.
Why it stands out
- Temperature control runs from 175°F to 450°F and includes a SearBlast setting.
- Reversible ceramic nonstick plates support grill and griddle cooking.
- It opens flat and is advertised to accommodate up to eight burgers.
- The drip tray and removable cooking components are designed for easier cleanup.
- Cuisinart states that the plates, drip tray, and cleaning tool are dishwasher-safe.
- The current official dimensions are approximately 13 × 12.4 × 7.6 inches, and the warranty is three years.
Good Housekeeping selected the Cuisinart Griddler FIVE as its best overall indoor grill in 2026 coverage after a testing history involving more than 30 indoor-grill models over the previous decade. Its testers praised the controls, griddle conversion, panini performance, dishwasher-safe parts, and ability to cook eight pancakes at once. Food Network also selected the Griddler line as its best overall indoor-grill option after testing heat distribution with bread, burger browning and release, salmon sticking and grill marks, and cleanup.
Its biggest trade-off
Versatility comes with a less focused grilling experience. In contact mode, the upper plate can drip grease onto the counter or lower cooking area when cooking fatty food. The top plate also presses down on food, which is helpful for burgers and panini but can crush delicate fish or flatten vegetables. For salmon or other fragile food, use it open or in a configuration that does not compress the food.
The Cuisinart’s advertised capacity also needs context. Eight burgers or pancakes may be possible, but the usable cooking area, spacing between food, and heat recovery after loading all affect the result. Cuisinart sells several similarly named Griddler models with different dimensions, controls, and prices, so confirm that the product is specifically GR-5BNAS before relying on specifications or replacement-part information.
Buy it if: you want one appliance for grilling, griddling, panini, pancakes, quesadillas, and other everyday meals.

3. Best value: Hamilton Beach Searing Grill 25360 or 25361
The Hamilton Beach Searing Grill is the practical budget choice. It provides a broad 118-square-inch cooking surface, adjustable heat up to 450°F, and a removable hood, cooking plate, and drip tray without the extra modes or higher price of a multifunction cooker.
25360 versus 25361
The model number matters:
- 25360: the core searing-grill design, generally without a viewing window.
- 25361: a closely related version with a glass viewing window and removable dishwasher-safe hood, grill plate, and drip tray.
Retailer listings sometimes describe these variants inconsistently. Check the model number printed on the box and the appliance base rather than relying only on a product title. Hamilton Beach’s product information for the 25361 is available in its product PDF.
What you get
- Adjustable temperature control from approximately 200°F to 450°F.
- Approximately 1,200 watts of power.
- Removable hood, cooking plate, and large drip tray.
- Approximately 16.7 × 12.4 × 6.8 inches for the 25360/25360MN listing.
- A one-year manufacturer warranty.
Good Housekeeping found that the Hamilton Beach produced distinct grill marks, had an easy dial, a large drip tray, and removable dishwasher-safe parts. Bob Vila also found it a strong value with a broad cooking surface, viewing window on the applicable version, adjustable heat, and useful grease management.
Why it is not the low-smoke winner
Good Housekeeping specifically reported that the grill became smoky even with the lid closed and recommended opening a window during use. That finding is important: the hood reduces splatter and lets you monitor food, but it does not make fatty cooking smoke-free. Bob Vila also noted that some versions do not provide precise temperature readings beyond the dial setting, so a 450°F control position should not be confused with a measured, uniform plate temperature.
Buy it if: you want a straightforward, relatively inexpensive full-size electric grill with removable parts and a generous cooking area.
Skip it if: your top priority is minimum smoke, accurate digital temperature control, or the most versatile plate system.
Best large-capacity alternative: Ninja Foodi Smart XL FG551 or DG551
The Ninja Foodi Smart XL is the best alternative for families who want more than a grill. It combines grilling with air crisping, roasting, baking, broiling, and dehydrating, and includes a built-in Smart Cook thermometer with four protein settings and nine doneness levels.

- Weight: approximately 26.9 pounds.
- Current Ninja list price for the DG551: $299.99.
- Warranty: one year.
Good Housekeeping praised its capacity, thermometer, 500°F setting, and multifunction design. It also found that the appliance is large and heavy and can become smoky during certain high-fat cooks. That is why it is not one of the main three picks for most readers seeking a compact, low-smoke indoor grill. Its strengths are capacity, automation, and air-frying—not low price or minimum smoke.
Choose it when: you regularly cook for a family, want an integrated probe, and will use the air-fry and oven functions often enough to justify the footprint and cost.
What smokeless really means
In this category, smokeless grill is a marketing shorthand for an electric countertop grill intended to reduce smoke. It does not mean that food can never produce visible smoke, grease aerosol, odor, or fine particles.
Different appliances manage smoke in different ways. Depending on the design, a product may use:

- A covered cooking chamber.
- A perforated or mesh lid that intercepts some splatter while allowing heat to circulate.
- High plate walls and channels that guide grease toward a drip tray.
- A water tray that cools or captures drippings on models that require one.
- A fan or airflow system on some products.
- Contact cooking, which exposes less grease than an open surface.
- Operating instructions that recommend keeping fats below their smoke point.
The Ninja Sizzle, Hamilton Beach Searing Grill, Cuisinart Griddler, PowerXL products, and Ninja Foodi Smart XL should not be assumed to use the same smoke-control technology. Check the manual for the exact model. A water tray, for example, should never be added unless the manufacturer specifically requires or permits it.
When smoke is most likely
- Cooking fatty steak, bacon, sausage, lamb, or skin-on chicken.
- Using too much oil or an oil with a low smoke point.
- Applying sugary sauces or marinades before high-heat cooking.
- Allowing grease to collect on the plate, lid, splatter screen, or heating area.
- Cooking at maximum heat when a lower setting would brown the food adequately.
- Failing to fill a required water tray.
- Cooking directly on residue left from a previous meal.
A covered electric grill can produce less visible splatter than a skillet or open grill, but a lid is not an air purifier. Good Housekeeping’s Hamilton Beach result and TechGearLab’s observation of some Ninja Sizzle smoke at the highest temperature are reminders to treat smoke reduction as a performance characteristic, not a guarantee.
Do smokeless grills taste like charcoal?
No. These appliances can create browned surfaces and grill marks through high-heat cooking and Maillard browning, but they do not reproduce the flavor of burning charcoal or wood. Food cooked under a covered electric element may taste more like food from a high-heat indoor grill or broiler.
Outdoor charcoal and pellet grills are separate categories and should not be used indoors. Fuel-burning grills add combustion gases as well as smoke. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that outdoor grills can create deadly carbon-monoxide hazards indoors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOpen grill versus contact grill
| Design | Advantages | Trade-offs | Best uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open grill | Food cooks on one side at a time; better for thick foods and foods that should not be compressed; more traditional grill experience | Usually requires flipping; exposed grease may produce more smoke | Steak, fish, vegetables, thick burgers |
| Contact grill | Cooks from both sides; faster for thin foods; often contains splatter more effectively | Can compress fish and other delicate food; grill texture may look less natural | Panini, grilled cheese, burgers, chicken breasts |
Food Network distinguishes these designs for the same reason: a contact grill is convenient and fast, but the upper plate can crush delicate ingredients. The Ninja Sizzle is primarily an open-grill experience. The Cuisinart can switch between open and contact configurations. The Hamilton Beach uses a hood rather than a contact plate.
Grill versus griddle: which surface do you need?
Use a ridged grill plate when grill marks and rendered-fat drainage matter. Use a flat griddle plate for pancakes, eggs, hash browns, quesadillas, shrimp, small vegetables, and foods that could fall through a grate. The Ninja Sizzle and Cuisinart Griddler FIVE are the strongest choices when both surfaces are important.
For a small household, a combination appliance may offer more value than buying a grill and separate griddle. For someone who only wants steak and burgers, interchangeable plates may add storage requirements without improving the main task.
Capacity, cooking area, and heat: what the numbers do not tell you
Manufacturers use different capacity claims such as six steaks, eight burgers, 24 hot dogs, or serves six. These are not standardized measurements. A fair comparison should consider:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Actual plate dimensions.
- Usable flat cooking area rather than the entire outer plate.
- Whether the edges are difficult to access.
- How much spacing food needs for browning.
- Whether the upper lid or heating element limits food height.
- Whether a family meal requires multiple batches.
- How much heat the appliance loses when cold food is added and how quickly it recovers.
The Ninja Sizzle’s approximately 14-inch surface is reasonable for fewer than four people, but its six-burger claim is a manufacturer estimate. The Hamilton Beach lists 118 square inches. The Ninja Foodi Smart XL is marketed for up to six steaks or 24 hot dogs, but its roughly 27-pound weight and tall, large footprint are substantial storage considerations. The Cuisinart advertises up to eight burgers, but its official page does not make its cooking area directly comparable with the square-inch figures above.
Likewise, a 500°F maximum rating is not a complete searing test. It may describe a control setting or advertised peak rather than the temperature of every part of the plate during cooking. Surface temperature, center-to-edge uniformity, preheat time, and recovery after loading are more useful measurements.
How the products should be tested
A credible hands-on update should identify the exact SKU, test date, purchase or loan status, room size, ventilation, ambient temperature, outlet arrangement, preheat time, temperature instrument, oil quantity, food quantity, and cleaning method. Smoke results cannot be compared fairly if one grill is tested beneath an outdoor-vented hood and another in a closed room.

Recommended test sequence
- Heat evenness: Place slices of white bread or standardized pancake batter across the surface. Record hot centers, cold corners, browning pattern, and differences between open and closed configurations.
- Burgers: Cook identical quarter-pound patties with the same fat percentage. Record preheat time, browning, grill marks, grease drainage, smoke, internal temperature, and cleanup.
- Fatty-meat stress test: Use a controlled portion of ribeye, bacon, sausage, or skin-on chicken. Label this as a smoke stress test rather than normal use. Record visible smoke, particulate readings if available, grease on the lid, and whether smoke increases as residue builds.
- Fish: Cook a four-ounce skin-on salmon fillet, as Food Network did in its testing. Record sticking, skin release, grill marks, compression, and internal temperature.
- Multifunction cooking: For combination appliances, test pancakes, eggs or hash browns, grilled cheese or panini, vegetables, and any half-grill/half-griddle configuration.
- Cleanup: Cool each unit according to its manual, empty grease into the trash, remove permitted parts, wash as directed, wipe the base and heating area, and record active cleaning time and remaining residue.
Suggested scoring weights
| Criterion | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke reduction | 25% | Visible smoke, particulate readings if available, grease aerosol, and odor retention |
| Cooking performance | 25% | Sear quality, browning, grill marks, recovery, and evenness |
| Ease of cleaning | 15% | Removable parts, dishwasher use, and residue around heating components |
| Usability | 10% | Controls, preheat indication, lid design, flipping, and food release |
| Capacity and footprint | 10% | Usable cooking area, batch size, storage, and counter clearance |
| Versatility | 5% | Grill, griddle, contact, panini, air-fry, or other modes |
| Value and ownership | 10% | Price, warranty, replacement plates, availability, and durability signals |
These weights explain why the Ninja Sizzle leads for low-smoke grilling, the Cuisinart leads for versatility, and the Hamilton Beach remains a value pick despite weaker smoke performance. Decimal scores should not be published without showing the measurements and calculation behind them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Safe indoor use in an apartment or condo
An appliance specifically designed and labeled for indoor use can be used indoors according to its instructions. That does not eliminate emissions, building restrictions, or the possibility of activating a smoke alarm. Lease terms, condominium rules, local fire codes, ceiling height, alarm sensitivity, and ventilation vary.
The EPA recommends using an outdoor-vented range hood when possible, leaving it on for 10 to 20 minutes after cooking, and opening windows or doors when safe. If there is no ducted hood, additional exhaust or filtration may help. A portable air cleaner can reduce some particles but does not replace source ventilation.
- Place the appliance on a stable, dry, heat-resistant surface.
- Keep it away from walls, cabinets, curtains, paper towels, and other combustibles.
- Follow the manual’s required clearance from overhead cabinets; do not assume it is safe directly under an overhang.
- Keep the electrical base, plug, and cord away from water and hot surfaces.
- Never immerse the electrical base.
- Use an extension cord only if the exact manual permits it and the cord’s electrical rating is adequate.
- Do not position the appliance beside a smoke alarm as a way to test whether it is smoke-free.
- People with asthma or smoke sensitivity should use stronger ventilation and may prefer lower-fat foods and moderate heat.
Can it be used outdoors?
Only if the manufacturer explicitly permits outdoor use for that exact model. Some electric grills may be used outdoors in dry weather, but the Hamilton Beach 25361 manual identifies that model as intended for indoor use only. Never use an indoor electric grill in rain, on a wet surface, or where the plug or base could be exposed to water. The manual for the exact model controls.
Cleaning and maintenance
Dishwasher-safe removable parts are helpful, but dishwasher-safe does not mean maintenance-free. Grease can remain in hinges, channels, heating-element guards, mesh lids, plate undersides, and crevices.
- Let the appliance cool as directed before removing parts.
- Pour cooled grease into the trash rather than down the drain.
- Use only the cleaning tools and detergents permitted by the manual.
- Do not immerse the electrical base.
- Clean grease channels and the underside of the lid, not just the visible cooking plate.
- Remove sugary marinade residue before the next high-heat cook.
- Avoid abrasive pads that can damage a nonstick or ceramic coating.
- Do not infer PFAS-free, non-toxic, or Teflon-free status unless the exact manufacturer statement verifies it.
Cuisinart states that the GR-5BNAS plates, drip tray, and cleaning tool are dishwasher-safe. Ninja specifically identifies the GR101 perforated lid as dishwasher-safe, while independent testing found that its plates were better treated with gentler hand washing. Confirm the exact current manual rather than generalizing across a product family.
Food-safety temperatures
Grill marks do not prove that food is safe to eat. Use a food thermometer and follow USDA minimum internal temperatures for U.S. cooking:
- Whole cuts of beef, pork, lamb, and veal: 145°F followed by a three-minute rest.
- Ground meat: 160°F.
- Poultry: 165°F.
- Fish and shellfish: 145°F.
See the USDA temperature chart for the current guidance.

| Large capacity, air frying, and automatic doneness guidance | Ninja Foodi Smart XL FG551/DG551 | Built-in probe, six functions, and a family-size cooking chamber |
| Charcoal smoke flavor | An outdoor charcoal or pellet grill | Electric indoor grills create browning and marks but do not burn wood or charcoal |
| A fuel-burning Korean barbecue tabletop grill | An appropriate outdoor model | Butane, propane, charcoal, and wood-burning grills do not belong in an indoor electric-grill ranking |
Frequently Asked Questions
Are smokeless grills completely smoke-free?
No. They reduce smoke and splatter through features such as lids, mesh screens, grease channels, drip trays, and sometimes airflow or water systems. Fatty meat, excess oil, sugary sauces, residue, and maximum heat can still create visible smoke and fine particles.
Can I use a smokeless grill in an apartment?
Use only an electric model explicitly labeled for indoor use, follow its manual, and provide ventilation. An outdoor-vented range hood is preferable; the EPA also recommends leaving it on for 10 to 20 minutes after cooking. Check your lease, condominium rules, and local requirements.
Can I use an indoor electric grill under a range hood?
Usually this is the most practical location if the exact manual permits it and the hood vents outdoors. Maintain the required clearance from cabinets and combustible materials. A recirculating hood is less effective than an outdoor-vented hood, and no hood guarantees that the smoke alarm will remain silent.

Can I use one of these grills outdoors?
Only when the manufacturer specifically allows outdoor use for that exact model. Do not use an indoor-rated appliance in rain, on a wet surface, or where its plug or base can contact water. The Hamilton Beach 25361 manual, for example, identifies that model as for indoor use only.
Do smokeless grills taste like charcoal?
No. They can produce browning and grill marks through high-heat cooking, but they do not provide the smoke flavor created by burning charcoal or wood. A covered electric grill generally tastes more like a high-heat indoor grill or broiler.

The Ninja Sizzle is the strongest choice among these picks for an open-grill steak experience because Ninja advertises a 500°F maximum and independent testing found even heating. Trim excess fat, avoid excess oil, ventilate, and use a thermometer rather than relying on grill marks.
Which is best for fish?
Choose an open configuration so delicate fish is not compressed. The Ninja Sizzle or the Cuisinart Griddler FIVE used open can work well. A contact grill is faster but may crush fish or make skin stick when the upper plate presses down.
Which is easiest to clean?
The Cuisinart Griddler FIVE has the clearest dishwasher-safe component claim for its exact GR-5BNAS model: Cuisinart lists the plates, drip tray, and cleaning tool. The Hamilton Beach also has removable dishwasher-safe parts, while Ninja identifies the Sizzle lid as dishwasher-safe. Grease can still remain in channels and hinges, so verify the exact manual.
Can I cook bacon indoors on a smokeless grill?
You can cook bacon only on an electric model labeled for indoor use, but bacon is a smoke stress test rather than a smoke-free food. Use ventilation, avoid maximum heat unless necessary, do not overcrowd the surface, and clean accumulated grease before the next cook.

Are these grills safe around smoke alarms?
No product can promise that it will not activate an alarm. Alarm sensitivity, ventilation, ceiling height, food fat, heat setting, and placement all vary. Never disable or cover a smoke alarm; instead, ventilate and keep the appliance away from the alarm where permitted by the manual.
Should I choose an open grill or contact grill?
Choose an open grill for thick steaks, fish, vegetables, and food that should not be compressed. Choose a contact grill for fast burgers, chicken breasts, panini, and grilled cheese. The Cuisinart Griddler FIVE is the most flexible because it supports both styles.
The Bottom Line
For the best combination of high heat, grill marks, interchangeable cooking surfaces, and smoke-reducing design, choose the Ninja Sizzle GR101. Choose the Cuisinart Griddler FIVE GR-5BNAS when one appliance must also handle panini, pancakes, eggs, quesadillas, and contact grilling. Choose the Hamilton Beach Searing Grill 25360 or 25361 to spend less and get a broad, simple cooking surface, but do not mistake it for the lowest-smoke option.
Whichever model you buy, treat smokeless as a category label—not a promise of zero smoke. Ventilate, follow the exact model manual, clean grease before it accumulates, and keep charcoal, propane, butane, and wood-burning grills outdoors.
