For most home cooks, the Emile Henry French Ceramic Pizza Stone is the best pizza stone of 2026 because it combines an attractive design, useful oven-and-grill versatility, and unusually easy cleanup. The Unicook Heavy Duty Cordierite Pizza Stone is the better value and the best choice for rectangular pizzas, bread, and families. The Cuisinart 3 Piece Pizza Grilling Pack is the easiest starting point for beginners because it includes a stone, pizza paddle, and cutter.

These recommendations are based on Food Network’s comparative test of 10 pizza stones and baking surfaces—not independent testing by this publication. Food Network baked the same type of cheese pizza on each surface at approximately 525°F and evaluated preheating, heat retention, and the finished crust.

Quick comparison

Pick Best for Material Size Main caveat
Emile Henry French Ceramic Pizza Stone Best ceramic stone and easiest cleanup High-performance ceramic/Burgundian clay 14-inch and 16-inch options; official smooth model is 14.5 inches Needs roughly 45–60 minutes to heat and cools faster than heavier surfaces
Unicook Heavy Duty Cordierite Pizza Stone Best budget and rectangular stone Cordierite 15 by 12 inches, 0.6 inch thick Not dishwasher-safe; use no soap, detergent, or oil
Cuisinart 3 Piece Pizza Grilling Pack, CPS-445P Best beginner set and grill starter kit Cordierite stone 13-inch round stone Smaller surface, and pizza can become soggy if left on the cooling stone

All three are legitimate pizza-stone choices, but they solve different problems. Choose by surface size, cleanup requirements, and whether you already own a peel and cutter—not by the word “stone” alone.

How Food Network tested these pizza stones

Food Network purchased 10 well-reviewed pizza stones and steels, then baked the same type of cheese pizza on each at about 525°F. Its evaluation included how long each surface took to heat, how well it retained heat, and the quality of the resulting pizza.

The test found that every surface needed at least 30 minutes of preheating, while some required 45 minutes to one hour. That distinction matters: a stone placed in a merely warm oven will not deliver the rapid bottom heat that produces a properly browned crust. The findings and rankings below are attributed to Food Network; this article does not claim that we independently tested these products.

Unicook 20 x 13.5 Inch Extra Large Pizza Stone for Oven and Grill, 10.6 Lbs
  • 20 Inch Large Pizza Stone for Oven: 20" x 13.5", golden thickness 0.6"(15mm), weighs around 10.69 lbs, allows to bake 2-3 pizzas or bread loaves baguette at a time. This baking stone is a great addition to kitchen ovens. Make sure you have at least a 1-inch gap around the stone for a proper fit and good ventilation
  • Even Cooking Baking Stone: The Unicook oven baking stone is made of Cordierite and heat resistant up to 1,450℉(787℃). It distributes heat evenly and retains high heat for consistent cooking without charring the toppings and prevents hot spots. No more soggy middles or burnt edges
  • Secret to Crispy Pizzas: The porous structure of the cooking stone absorbs excess moisture from pizza dough, creating a golden, crispy crust that giving the pizza brick-oven flavor. 1. Emile Henry French Ceramic Pizza Stone: best ceramic pizza stone

Choose it if: you want a good-looking stone that can move from the oven to the grill and is easier to clean than most cordierite surfaces.

Food Network named the Emile Henry French Ceramic Pizza Stone its best ceramic pizza stone after testing. Its dark baking surface, sleek appearance, versatility, and dishwasher-safe cleanup were the main advantages. It is also lighter than many cast-iron or steel alternatives: Food Network listed the tested stone at approximately six pounds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emile Henry describes the product line as BBQ Ceramic and identifies the smooth model with SKU EH347514. The official specification lists a 14.5-inch diameter and approximately 5.5-pound weight, with use permitted in conventional ovens, gas or charcoal barbecues, microwaves, and dishwashers. The manufacturer also advertises a 10-year guarantee for qualifying domestic use.

The ceramic construction is the reason to buy this model, but it is also the source of its principal limitation. Food Network reported that the Emile Henry needed approximately 45 minutes to one hour to heat in the tester’s oven and cooled faster than heavier steel surfaces. It should not be described as the fastest-heating option. If you are baking a succession of pizzas, the surface may recover heat less aggressively than a thick steel slab.

What it does best

  • Easy cleanup: the official product information permits dishwasher use, unlike the Unicook stone.
  • Flexible placement: it is specified for ovens, gas grills, charcoal grills, and microwaves.
  • Appearance: the darker surface and polished design are more presentable for serving than a stained or heavily used baking slab.
  • Manageable weight: it is easier to handle than many cast-iron or steel surfaces.

What to watch for

  • Heat it thoroughly before launching the pizza; plan on at least 45 minutes and consider a full hour.
  • Verify the exact diameter before ordering. Food Network reported 14- and 16-inch options, while Emile Henry’s official smooth model is listed at 14.5 inches.
  • Check current stock and the selected color or size. The official page showed the displayed variant as sold out when checked, so availability should not be assumed.

Bottom line: This is the best fit for cooks who value convenient cleanup and oven-to-grill versatility more than maximum heat retention.

2. Unicook Heavy Duty Cordierite Pizza Stone: best budget pizza stone

Choose it if: you want a large, relatively inexpensive baking surface for family-sized, rectangular, or multiple smaller pizzas.

Food Network selected the Unicook Heavy Duty Cordierite Pizza Stone as its best budget buy. The 15-by-12-inch rectangular shape gives it a practical advantage over small round stones: it can accommodate rectangular pizza, makes launching easier, and provides useful room for bread or more than one small item. Its approximately 6.6-pound weight is substantial without being as cumbersome as many cast-iron or steel surfaces.

Unicook 15 x 12 Inch Rectangular Pizza Stone for Oven and Grill, 6.8 Lbs
  • Rectangular Baking Stone: This baking stone measures 15" L x 12" W with 0.6" thickness and weighs about 6.8 lbs. The Unicook pizza stone is ideal for baking personal pizzas up to 11 inches in diameter. For 12-inch or larger pizzas, please check our larger models. For charcoal kettle grill, please check our round stone models. Important: Please ensure a minimum of 1-2 inches of clearance on ALL sides inside your oven or grill for proper fit and airflow
  • Even Cooking: The oven stone is made of high-quality Cordierite, heat-resistant up to 1,450°F (787°C), and ensures even heat distribution for consistent cooking without hot spots—no more soggy centers or burnt edges. Please preheat the stone to ensure even cooking and crispy crust
  • Absorbs Moisture: The porous surface of the pizza cooking stone effectively absorbs excess moisture from pizza dough, creating a crispy, golden pizza crust. Ideal for baking fresh and frozen pizzas, bread, rolls, cookies, and more. The reversible smooth surface allows use on both sides
  • Plastic Dough Cutter: Includes a multi-purpose plastic scraper that functions as a dough cutter or cleaning tool for removing residue from the pizza oven stone
  • Cleaning and Care: After the pizza stone has cooled, use a scraper to remove any food residue. Hand wash with warm water, using a brush if necessary. Do not use detergent. Frequently used pizza pans may develop discolored areas over time. This is normal and does not require cleaning

Unicook’s official product information describes this model as a 0.6-inch-thick cordierite stone rated to 1,450°F for ovens and gas or charcoal grills. In Food Network’s test, it produced a softer golden crust rather than the darkest or crispest crust among the surfaces tested. It also cooled relatively quickly.

That performance does not make it a poor choice. It makes the Unicook a value-oriented stone rather than the pick for someone chasing the most aggressive browning or baking several pizzas back-to-back. For a household that makes pizza occasionally, the large footprint may matter more than the last increment of crust crispness.

Care requirements are not optional

Unicook says not to clean this stone with soap or detergent and not to season it with oil. Food Network also describes it as not dishwasher-safe. Allow it to cool completely, scrape away baked-on residue, and wipe it with water and a suitable non-abrasive tool. Do not transfer the Emile Henry’s dishwasher instructions to this stone: pizza-stone care is material-specific.

Never put a hot stone under cold water. The sudden temperature change can cause thermal shock and cracking. Likewise, inspect the stone’s fit in your oven or grill before heating it; a surface that touches the oven walls or prevents adequate airflow is a poor fit even if its listed dimensions look acceptable.

What it does best

  • Large rectangular workspace: useful for rectangular pizza, flatbreads, and bread.
  • Family use: more room than the Cuisinart’s 13-inch round stone.
  • Budget value: a straightforward stone without accessories you may already own.
  • High-heat compatibility: the manufacturer rates it to 1,450°F and lists oven and gas-or-charcoal-grill use.

Bottom line: The Unicook is the most sensible pick for shoppers who want a large surface at a comparatively modest price and do not mind hand-cleaning it. It is also the strongest choice here for rectangular pizza and bread baking.

3. Cuisinart 3 Piece Pizza Grilling Pack: best beginner pizza-stone set

Choose it if: you are making pizza for the first time and need the basic launching and cutting tools in one package.

Food Network named the Cuisinart Three-Piece Pizza Grilling Set its best pizza-stone set. The beginner-friendly bundle includes a pizza stone, pizza paddle, and pizza wheel, so a new pizza maker does not have to assemble the essential tools separately. Cuisinart’s current product page identifies the set as model CPS-445P, the 3 Piece Pizza Grilling Pack, with a 13-inch cordierite stone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The set is lightweight, inexpensive relative to buying several separate tools, and compatible with grill use. Its round 13-inch surface is a reasonable size for smaller pizzas, but it is clearly less versatile than the Unicook’s 15-by-12-inch rectangle. Measure your oven and grill clearance, and also consider the size of the pizzas you expect to make before choosing the kit.

Unicook 16" Round Pizza Stone for Oven and Grill, Cordierite Baking Stone
  • Durable Construction: Unicook pizza stone is made of Cordierite, sintered in 2100°F kiln for hours, no odor under proper use. Feature of superior strength, durability, heat retention and excellent thermal shock resistance, built to outlast all others. Heat resistant up to 1,450°F (787°C)
  • Secret of Super Crisp Crust Pizza: Full of invisible micro-pores which draw out moisture from dough, distribute heat evenly for optimal cooking, make pizza or flatbread with crispy crusts, avoiding the sogginess that often occurs with metal pans
  • Multi-functional Pizza Stone: 16 inch round pizza stone has golden thickness 0.57"(14.5mm), weight up to 7.4 lbs. Unicook bread stone distributes heat evenly for optimal cooking, which is great for cooking fresh or frozen pizza on the grill or in the oven. Perfect for baking pizza, bread and cookies at home
  • Plastic Scraper: A multi-purpose plastic scraper is a bonus which can be used as a dough cutter or scrape off the residue stuck to the stone(use on cool stone surface only)
  • WARNING: Never use soap or detergent to clean the stone! Never season Cordierite bread stone with oil or grease! (WARM TIP: If your pizza stone arrives damaged or you need any assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us)

Food Network’s main caution was what happens after baking. If the pizza remains on the cooling stone, the crust can become soggy more quickly. Transfer the finished pizza promptly to a cutting board or wire rack, then use the included wheel on the board—not on the stone.

What it does best

  • Beginner convenience: the stone, peel, and cutter are included.
  • Grill use: a useful starting kit for cooks who plan to bake outdoors.
  • Lightweight handling: easier to move and store than heavier baking surfaces.

What to watch for

  • The 13-inch round stone limits pizza size and is less useful for rectangular pizza or large loaves.
  • Move pizza off the stone immediately after baking to reduce the risk of a soggy bottom.
  • Do not treat the bundled paddle as a substitute for good launch technique. Flour or cornmeal, properly stretched dough, and a quick transfer still matter.

Bottom line: This is the best starter package, not the highest-performance choice for repeated pizza parties. Choose it when having the peel and cutter included is more important than maximizing baking area or heat retention.

Stone versus steel and cast iron

The title is about pizza stones, but the comparative Food Network test also included steel and cast-iron surfaces. Those materials can be better choices for some cooks.

Pizza steel

Food Network named The Original Baking Steel its best steel. The official specifications describe a 16-by-14-inch, quarter-inch carbon-steel slab. Steel generally transfers heat more aggressively than porous ceramic or cordierite, making it attractive to readers who prioritize strong bottom browning and durability. The tradeoffs are weight, cost, storage, and the need to manage a very hot surface carefully.

It is not a pizza stone, so do not compare it as though it had the same material behavior. Choose steel if maximum heat transfer and repeated high-temperature baking are more important than lightweight handling.

Cast iron

Food Network named the Lodge Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Baking Pan its overall winner in the broader test. It is a cast-iron baking pan—not a stone—and is best considered when heat retention and ruggedness are priorities. Cast iron is heavy and takes time to heat, but it can hold heat well. It is less convenient to move and may require more attention to seasoning and rust prevention than a dishwasher-safe ceramic product.

Rectangular bread-and-pizza surfaces

King Arthur Baking recommends choosing the largest rectangular surface that fits comfortably, particularly for bread and rectangular pizzas. That guidance supports the Unicook’s shape for multipurpose baking. Before buying any large stone or steel, measure the oven rack, door opening, grill grate, and available side clearance.

How to use a pizza stone correctly

1. Check the fit before heating

Measure the stone and compare it with the usable width and depth of your oven rack. Leave enough clearance for air circulation and for the stone to expand slightly as it heats. For a grill, confirm that the lid closes without touching the surface.

Unicook 16 x 14 Inch Pizza Stone for Oven and Grill, Rectangular, 8 Lbs
  • Versatile Pizza Stone for Oven Grill: baking stone 16 inch measures 16" x 14" x 0.57", weight up to 8 lbs. The large pizza stone is ideal for baking frozen/fresh pizzas, also several pizzas bread at one time. An excellent option for usage at home, family gatherings, and parties
  • Durable Construction and Odorless: The rectangular cooking stone is made of Cordierite, sintered in 2100°F kiln and heat resistant up to 1,450°F (787°C), excellent thermal shock resistant. No unpleasant smell when heating
  • Uniform Heat Distribution: Unicook pizza oven stone’s special porous structure ensures even heat distribution and efficient moisture extraction from the dough, resulting in crispy crusts for your pizza or bread, avoiding sogginess common with metal pans
  • Plastic Scraper: Included a multi-purpose plastic scraper, which can be used as a dough cutter or scrape off the residue stuck to the stone(use on cool stone surface only)
  • Perfect Baking Gift: Unicook offers different grill pizza stones to meet all baking needs. Your loved one will cherish the gift of this large bread stone

2. Put the stone in a cold oven

Place the stone on a rack before turning on the oven. Starting cold reduces the risk of exposing it to a sudden temperature change. Keep the stone in place while the oven and stone heat together.

3. Preheat longer than the oven’s beep

Food Network’s testing supports at least 30 minutes, with some surfaces needing 45 minutes to an hour. King Arthur Baking recommends preheating a stone or steel in place for at least one hour and targeting a surface temperature of at least 500°F when possible. A practical home rule is:

  • 30 minutes: a test-based minimum for some setups.
  • 45–60 minutes: the safer target for a fully heated surface, especially for ceramic or thick stones.
  • About 500–550°F oven setting: a useful range for high-heat pizza, provided your stone, oven, dough, and manufacturer instructions are compatible.

An infrared thermometer can help verify the surface rather than relying only on the oven’s air-temperature display. This is particularly useful for owners of outdoor pizza ovens, where the stone surface and air temperature can differ substantially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Launch quickly

Prepare the pizza on a lightly floured or cornmeal-dusted peel, but do not let wet dough sit on the peel for an extended period. Give the peel a short shake to confirm that the dough moves, then open the oven and transfer it promptly. Excess flour can burn, so use only enough to prevent sticking.

5. Remove the pizza after baking

Move the finished pizza to a cutting board or wire rack as soon as it is baked. Cutting directly on the stone can scratch it or force crumbs and debris into the surface. Leaving pizza on a cooling stone can also trap steam beneath the crust and make it soggy.

6. Cool completely before cleaning or storing

Do not wash, move to a cold surface, or store a stone while it is still hot. Thermal shock is one of the main avoidable causes of cracking. Follow the instructions for the specific material: Emile Henry permits dishwasher cleaning, while Unicook prohibits soap, detergent, and oil seasoning. When the manufacturer’s instructions differ, the manufacturer’s instructions win.

Which pizza stone should you buy?

  • Buy the Emile Henry if easy cleanup, attractive design, and oven-or-grill flexibility are your priorities. Confirm the size and current availability first.
  • Buy the Unicook if you want the best value, a rectangular format, room for family-sized or multiple smaller pizzas, or a surface that can also support bread baking. Accept the hand-cleaning requirements.
  • Buy the Cuisinart set if you are a beginner, want a peel and pizza wheel included, or plan to start grilling pizza without buying accessories separately. Move pizza off the stone promptly after baking.
  • Choose steel instead if you prioritize aggressive heat transfer, very crisp bottom crusts, and repeated high-temperature baking, and can accept more weight and a different price point.
  • Choose cast iron instead if maximum heat retention and ruggedness matter more than easy handling.

No pizza stone can compensate for a cold baking surface, dough that sticks to the peel, or pizza left steaming on the stone after baking. For the strongest results, measure the fit, preheat thoroughly, launch quickly, and transfer the pizza to a board or rack when it is done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a ceramic pizza stone better than a cordierite stone?

Neither material is universally better. Ceramic, as used by Emile Henry, offers an attractive design and dishwasher-safe cleanup, but Food Network found that it needed roughly 45 minutes to one hour to heat and cooled faster than heavier surfaces. Cordierite, used by Unicook and Cuisinart, is a practical high-heat material, but care instructions vary and the Unicook must not be washed with soap or detergent.

How long should a pizza stone preheat?

Use 30 minutes as a test-based minimum, but 45–60 minutes is a more conservative home target. King Arthur Baking recommends at least one hour and a surface temperature of at least 500°F when possible.

Can pizza stones go in the dishwasher?

Not all of them. Emile Henry’s official product information permits dishwasher use. The Unicook stone is not dishwasher-safe and should not be cleaned with soap or detergent. Check the instructions for the exact model before washing it.

Can you cut pizza directly on a pizza stone?

No. Transfer the pizza to a cutting board or wire rack first. Cutting on the stone can scratch it or push food debris into its surface, and leaving pizza on a cooling stone can make the crust soggy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best pizza stone for a grill?

All three recommended options are suitable for grill use according to the cited product information. The Cuisinart is the most beginner-friendly because it includes a paddle and wheel; Emile Henry offers oven, gas-grill, charcoal-grill, and dishwasher versatility; Unicook offers a larger rectangular surface and a manufacturer rating up to 1,450°F.

The Bottom Line

Best overall fit for most cleanup-conscious cooks: Emile Henry. Best value and rectangular option: Unicook. Best first purchase: Cuisinart’s three-piece set. Whichever you choose, the technique is decisive: preheat the surface thoroughly, launch the dough quickly, and move the pizza off the stone before cutting or serving.
