The OXO Good Grips 11-Pound Food Scale is the best kitchen scale for most home cooks and bakers in this 2026 shortlist. It offers the most useful combination of reported accuracy, fast response, physical controls, readable display design, and practical tare and shutoff behavior. The Amazon Basics scale is the better low-cost choice, while the My Weigh KD-8000 is the specialist pick for serious bakers.
Best overall: the OXO Good Grips 11-Pound Stainless Steel Food Scale with Pull-Out Display. It combines accurate, quick readings with the most useful everyday design: physical buttons, a large display that pulls out from beneath an overhanging bowl, and a two-stage shutoff that gives you time to read the measurement.
Best budget: the Amazon Basics Digital Kitchen Scale with LCD Display. It handles the core jobs—grams, ounces, tare, baking, portioning, and meal prep—at a lower cost, but its display is smaller and unlit.
Best for serious bakers: the My Weigh KD-8000 Digital Food Scale. Its large capacity, bright display, adjustable auto-off, recalibration capability, and baker’s-percentage mode make it a better workstation for bread bakers and recipe developers than a compact everyday scale.
This is a source-based 2026 shortlist, not a claim that we personally tested these products. The Kitchn tested 10 scales for accuracy, response time, readability, controls, cleaning, and related usability; Food Network tested 10 models using nickel weights and a flour-and-oil cleanup test; and Bon Appétit tested 16 models over several years. Their methods, model selections, and conclusions were not identical, so the rankings below are recommendations rather than a universal consensus.
| Scale | Best for | Capacity | Main advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OXO Good Grips 11-Pound Food Scale | Most home cooks and bakers | 11 lb | Readable pull-out display and fast response | Larger and pricier than basic models |
| Amazon Basics Digital Kitchen Scale | Budget shoppers | 11 lb | Accurate core performance and useful unit choices | Small, unlit display and short timeout |
| My Weigh KD-8000 | Serious bakers and recipe developers | 17.6 lb, according to the cited test listing | Baker’s percentage and large working platform | Bulky and less convenient to store |
1. OXO Good Grips 11-Pound Food Scale: Best overall
The OXO is the easiest recommendation for most kitchens because it improves the parts of weighing that become annoying during real recipes. The display pulls out from the body, so a large mixing bowl is less likely to block the numbers. The controls are manual buttons rather than touch-only controls, which is helpful when your hands are wet, floury, or sticky.
In The Kitchn’s testing, the OXO had the quickest response time among the tested models and scored well for accuracy, readability, and usability. The pull-out display also helps with cleanup because the scale’s front area is easier to access than a display tucked directly under the platform.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIts two-stage shutoff is another practical advantage. The Kitchn reports that the display first goes dark after five minutes and then shuts off fully after 15 minutes. The displayed measurement is preserved when the screen goes dark, so you do not necessarily lose your reading while pausing to consult a recipe or add an ingredient. Exact behavior can depend on the scale’s operating state and settings, so the manual remains the authority for use.
OXO’s manual confirms the tare/zero function. Tare lets you place a bowl on the platform, zero it out, add an ingredient, zero the scale again, and continue weighing additional ingredients without removing the contents. The scale’s maximum capacity is 11 pounds, and its listed modes include pounds/ounces, kilograms/grams, and other common cooking readouts.

2. Amazon Basics Digital Kitchen Scale: Best budget
The Amazon Basics model is the low-cost accuracy play. According to The Kitchn’s testing, it received one of the highest accuracy scores among the 10 tested scales while retaining a low-profile body, physical buttons, and an 11-pound capacity.
It is more versatile than its price-oriented positioning might suggest. The listed modes include ounces, pounds/ounces, grams, fluid ounces, and milliliters. That gives it enough range for baking, portioning, meal prep, and many recipes that use volume-like liquid measurements.
The compromises are primarily ergonomic. The LCD is small and unlit, which makes it less comfortable to read than the OXO when the scale is behind a large bowl or the kitchen lighting is poor. Its two-minute auto-off can also interrupt a long recipe. The narrow gap around the weighing platform may allow flour and crumbs to collect, making cleanup less convenient than on a more carefully designed scale.

3. My Weigh KD-8000: Best for serious bakers
The My Weigh KD-8000 is a baker’s workstation rather than a minimalist countertop gadget. Its feature set is most useful when you make bread regularly, scale formulas up or down, weigh large bowls, or develop recipes that need repeatable percentage calculations.
The Kitchn’s listing gives it a 17.6-pound maximum capacity and identifies several specialist features: a bright display, hold function, baker’s-percentage mode, adjustable auto-off behavior, battery or adapter power, home recalibration, and removable components for cleaning. It supports gram, kilogram, pound/ounce, and baker’s-percentage modes.
Baker’s percentage expresses every ingredient as a percentage of the flour weight. For example, in a dough containing 500 grams of flour and 350 grams of water, the water is 70% baker’s percentage. A scale with this mode can make it easier to read and adapt professional-style formulas, particularly when changing batch size.
Tom’s Guide also describes the KD-8000 as accurate, backlit, and equipped with baker’s-percentage functionality, while warning that its chunky size and power lead can be awkward. The listed footprint—approximately 4.5 by 8 by 9.5 inches in The Kitchn’s comparison—takes substantially more space than the OXO or Amazon Basics scale.

- The Kitchn: tested 10 models for accuracy, intuitiveness, readability, response time, cleaning, and related usability. Its accuracy procedure used one and two nickels, repeatedly weighed at the center and compass points of each scale.
- Food Network: tested 10 digital scales by checking four stacked nickels against an expected 20 grams at different positions on the platform. It also left a flour-and-oil mixture on each scale for 20 minutes before hand-cleaning and evaluated stability, materials, size, weight, price, and availability.
- Bon Appétit: tested 16 models over several years, selecting the Escali Primo as its overall pick, Amazon Basics as its budget pick, and Fellow Tally for readers who want a scale that also serves coffee-brewing needs.
- Tom’s Guide: provides additional comparison points, including the KitchenAid KQ909 and the KD-8000’s large platform and baker’s-percentage capabilities.
Nickel testing is useful for checking repeatability with known household objects, but it does not establish laboratory-grade accuracy across every weight or prove that one scale will perform identically in every kitchen. A model’s instructions should govern calibration, maximum load, and allowable operating conditions.
What to look for in a kitchen scale
Accuracy and repeatability
For baking, the important question is not only whether a scale displays the expected number once. It should return consistent readings when the same weight is placed in different areas of the platform. The cited publications used nickel-based checks and repeated measurements, but their results are source-specific and reflect different test dates and model groups.
Capacity
An 11-pound limit is enough for most home recipes, including ingredients in a normal mixing bowl. The KD-8000’s materially higher listed capacity is useful for large dough batches, meal-prep containers, and commercial-style formulas. Do not confuse maximum capacity with precision: a scale that can hold more is not automatically better for tiny amounts.

Display position and readability
A display can be technically accurate and still frustrating if a bowl blocks it. The OXO’s pull-out display is the most effective solution among these picks. A bright or backlit display, as on the KD-8000, is also helpful in a floury workspace. The Amazon Basics model is readable but gives up illumination and display size to keep the design and price down.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Physical controls and tare
Manual buttons are generally easier to operate with messy hands than touch-only controls. Tare is essential: it subtracts the container’s weight and lets you add ingredients sequentially. Before buying, check that the scale can handle the container you use most often without approaching its maximum capacity.
Auto-off behavior
Automatic shutoff saves batteries but can be inconvenient during a complicated recipe. The Amazon Basics scale’s reported two-minute timeout is relatively short. The OXO provides a more forgiving two-stage behavior, while the KD-8000 offers adjustable auto-off behavior according to the cited testing.
Cleaning and storage
Flour finds narrow seams and gaps. Look for a smooth platform, sealed controls, removable components, or a display design that does not trap debris. Never submerge a digital scale unless its manufacturer specifically says it is designed for that use. Wipe it with the method specified in the manual, and keep the scale level on a stable surface.

Escali Primo
The Escali Primo is a strong alternative for shoppers who want a simple, compact, lightweight scale. Food Network named it best overall after its testing, and Bon Appétit has kept it as a long-running favorite. The cited descriptions emphasize an 11-pound capacity, 1-gram increments, compact dimensions, two-button controls, and positive long-term durability feedback. Choose it over the OXO if simplicity and a smaller footprint matter more than the OXO’s pull-out display.
Escali Primo scale is the alternative to investigate if you want a straightforward 11-pound kitchen scale without the OXO’s larger display design.
Fellow Tally
Fellow Tally is relevant if you bake and brew coffee. Bon Appétit included it for readers who want combined baking and coffee-scale capabilities. It is not necessary for ordinary kitchen weighing, so it makes more sense as a specialty choice than as a replacement for the three picks above.
KitchenAid KQ909
Tom’s Guide identifies the KitchenAid KQ909 as a favorite in its later comparison. Its dual-platform design supports up to 11 pounds on the large platform and up to 16 ounces on the smaller platform, with 0.001-ounce resolution on that smaller surface according to the cited report. That is a specialized configuration for users who want fine measurements and two weighing areas, not an automatic upgrade for routine baking.
Best Value
- 【Precise Weight】 10kg/22lb capacity, 1g/0.1oz resolution, Great for cooking, baking, weight loss, Meal Prep, Coffee, Package, Postage.
- 【Multifunction Scale】This digital kitchen scale has 6 measurement unit: g, kg, lb, oz, ml, milk ml.
- 【Easy Tare】Remove the weight of any container to get more precise results.
- 【Portable Design】- Small Scale Dimensions:7.4 x 5.5 x 0.6 inches. The digital kitchen scale’s convenient size makes it easy to store in your kitchen.
- 【LCD Display】Big bright LCD display easy to read. The cute gram scale to turn off after 3 minutes inactivity.
Which one should you buy?
- Buy the OXO for the best balance of readability, response, capacity, controls, and everyday convenience.
- Buy the Amazon Basics when low cost matters most and you can live with a small unlit display and shorter timeout.
- Buy the KD-8000 for bread baking, large batches, baker’s math, or a semi-professional workflow.
- Consider the Escali Primo if you want a simpler, compact alternative to the OXO.
- Consider the Fellow Tally or KitchenAid KQ909 only when their coffee or dual-platform features match a specific need.
For most households, the OXO is the safest recommendation because its advantages affect nearly every recipe. The cheaper Amazon Basics model covers the fundamentals well, while the KD-8000 earns its extra size only when its baker-focused tools will genuinely be used.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best kitchen scale for most home cooks?
The OXO Good Grips 11-Pound Food Scale is the best overall choice for most people because it combines reported accuracy and fast response with physical buttons, a readable pull-out display, tare, and a forgiving two-stage shutoff. The Amazon Basics model is a better fit when price matters most, and the My Weigh KD-8000 is better for serious bakers who need baker’s percentages and a larger platform.
Is the Amazon Basics kitchen scale accurate enough for baking?
Yes. The Amazon Basics scale was among The Kitchn’s highest-scoring models for accuracy in its 10-scale test. Its tradeoffs are a small, unlit display, a reported two-minute auto-off, and a platform gap that can make flour cleanup more difficult. Its exact price and availability should be checked at publication time.
How much capacity does a kitchen scale need?
The OXO has an 11-pound maximum, which is sufficient for most home baking and cooking. The My Weigh KD-8000 has a substantially higher listed capacity of 17.6 pounds and is better suited to large bowls and bigger dough batches. Always leave a safety margin below a scale’s maximum rating.
What is baker’s percentage, and do I need it?
Baker’s percentage expresses each ingredient’s weight as a percentage of the flour weight. It is particularly useful for scaling bread and pastry formulas. The My Weigh KD-8000 includes this mode, but it is unnecessary if you mostly follow small household recipes without changing batch sizes.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose the OXO for the best all-around kitchen experience, the Amazon Basics scale for inexpensive everyday weighing, and the My Weigh KD-8000 if you need a serious bread-baking workstation with baker’s-percentage functionality.
