If you want one dependable wooden cooking utensil, start with the Sur La Table Olivewood Cook’s Spoon. Food & Wine named it the best overall spoon in its documented hands-on test. The Made In Wooden Spoon is the more versatile spoon-spatula hybrid, the FAAY Teak Cooking Spoon is the strongest value-oriented single utensil, and the Crate & Barrel Acacia five-piece set is the better everyday starter set. For a premium gift or presentation-focused kitchen, choose the Williams Sonoma Walnut Essentials set.
Wood is gentle on nonstick and enameled cookware, quiet in a pan, and comfortable to use. The trade-off is care: most wooden utensils must be washed by hand, dried promptly, and kept out of prolonged soaking and the dishwasher. This guide separates products supported by documented cooking tests from products selected using current specifications, construction details, and availability checks.
What this list includes—and what it does not
The phrase wooden utensils is used loosely in many shopping roundups. It can mean a solid-wood spoon, a wood-handled carving knife, a rolling pin, a cocktail muddler, or even a utensil crock. Those tools are not interchangeable, so this list uses three clear categories:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Solid-wood cooking utensils: spoons and spoon-shaped tools used for stirring, scraping, sautéing, and serving from a pot.
- Wooden sets and serving tools: coordinated cooking sets, salad servers, and serving utensils.
- Wood-accented specialty tools: tools such as graters and pastry implements that have wood handles or details but also rely on metal working parts.
The current Food & Wine roundup is titled The 15 Best Wooden Utensils, Including a Few of Our Tested Favorites. Its 15 entries include a utensil holder, carving knives, a rolling pin, a grater, a butter blade, pastry tools, and a muddler. A utensil holder is storage, not a utensil, so it is excluded here to preserve the 14-item promise. The earlier 14-item title is also recorded in Food & Wine’s press listing.
There is another important scope distinction: the seven individual spoons in the first section below were included in Food & Wine’s separate spoon test. The sets and specialty tools were not treated as though they had all undergone that same cooking test. They are recommendations based on the listed materials, shapes, care instructions, contents, price snapshots, and availability evidence.

How the tested spoon recommendations were judged
Food & Wine’s separate wooden-spoon review tested eight products—seven wood spoons and one paper-fiber composite—in sautéing vegetables and ground meat, stirring sauces, mixing batters, scrambling eggs, making risotto, repeated hand washing, and dishwasher cycles where applicable. The test also considered ergonomics, cleaning, and odor retention. The seven wooden spoons from that test form the evidence base for the individual cooking-tool recommendations below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA useful buying framework for any utensil is:
- Cooking performance: 30%: how well it stirs, scrapes, breaks up food, and handles thick mixtures.
- Shape and task suitability: 20%: whether the head reaches corners, serves food, or performs the job the product claims.
- Comfort and balance: 15%: handle length, weight, grip, and suitability for different hand sizes.
- Construction and finish: 15%: smoothness, edge quality, seams, splinters, and finish disclosure.
- Cleaning burden: 10%: how easily food and odors are removed and how much maintenance is required.
- Value and availability: 10%: price, useful lifespan, warranty, stock status, and replacement options.
For a spoon, the important questions are more practical than the wood species alone: Can the edge reach a pan corner? Is the bowl shallow enough for stirring but deep enough to lift food? Does the handle keep your hand away from steam? Can you use it comfortably in a deep pot? Does it work for both delicate eggs and dense ground meat?
The 7 best individual wooden cooking utensils
1. Sur La Table Olivewood Cook’s Spoon — best overall
The Sur La Table Olivewood Cook’s Spoon is the best-supported all-purpose pick because Food & Wine named it the best overall in its documented spoon test. It is 15.2 inches long, which provides useful clearance over a hot pan or deep pot. The test found it easy to clean and maneuverable.
Olivewood is dense, smooth, and visually distinctive, with natural variation from spoon to spoon. Inspect an online delivery when it arrives: the test coverage specifically notes that individual olivewood orders should be checked for flaws. This is a strong choice for cooks who want one attractive spoon for sauces, vegetables, soups, and general stirring.
Choose it if: you want one long, comfortable, traditional cooking spoon and do not need dishwasher cleaning. Skip it if: you have small hands and dislike long handles, or if dishwasher compatibility is essential. See the documented test and observations.
2. Made In Wooden Spoon — most versatile design
The Made In Wooden Spoon is a 12.75-inch beechwood spoon made in Hungary. Made In lists it at $29, says it is in stock, identifies a lifetime warranty, and specifies hand washing.
Its angled, broad head gives it more of a spoon-spatula character than a simple round spoon. That makes it useful for stirring, folding, scraping the bottom of a pan, and breaking up food. Food & Wine’s test called it the most versatile spoon. The shorter length can be a benefit for cooks with smaller hands, although larger-handed cooks may find it less comfortable in a deep stockpot.
Choose it if: you want one tool that covers the most jobs in a skillet or medium saucepan. Best use: scraping browned fond gently from cookware, especially when a broad, angled edge is more useful than a deep bowl.
3. Earlywood Cooking Spoon — best premium handmade spoon
The Earlywood Cooking Spoon is the premium handmade choice in the tested group. It is made from maple and is available in right- and left-handed versions, an unusual advantage for cooks who care about the direction of the handle and the angle of the working edge.
Food & Wine found the spoon premium and well made but noted that the handle could be longer. That trade-off matters: a shorter handmade spoon can feel controlled in a skillet but provide less heat clearance in a Dutch oven or stockpot.
Choose it if: you want a carefully shaped, handmade tool and are willing to pay more for fit and finish rather than a large set. Check the handed version before ordering.
4. FAAY Teak Cooking Spoon — best value-oriented single spoon
The FAAY Teak Cooking Spoon is the value pick from the documented test. Food & Wine described it as smooth, lightweight, and moisture-resistant, with a smaller but deeper bowl.
That bowl is useful when you want to lift sauce, stew, or grains, but it is not as broad and flat as the Made In spoon for scraping or breaking up food. Teak’s naturally oily character can help it feel smooth, but it still needs prompt washing and drying. Moisture resistance does not make a wooden utensil dishwasher-safe.

5. Williams Sonoma Olivewood Spoon — best gift spoon
The Williams Sonoma Olivewood Spoon is available in 12- and 14-inch sizes and was identified as the gift pick in the tested spoon coverage. The shorter version is easier to control; the longer version offers more clearance in deep cookware.
Its tapered handle gives it an elegant appearance, but that shape will not suit every grip. Olivewood also varies naturally in color and grain, so it is a good gift when the recipient appreciates a handmade-looking object rather than a perfectly uniform utensil.
Choose it if: appearance, gift presentation, and a choice of lengths matter. For a cook who needs maximum leverage or a broad scraping edge, the Made In or Sabatier design may be more practical.

6. Crate & Barrel Acacia Spoon — best for new cooks
The Crate & Barrel Acacia Spoon has a deep bowl and long handle. Those dimensions make it forgiving for a new cook who wants to stir a sauce, reach into a pot, or serve a portion without immediately learning several specialized spoon shapes.
The weakness is cost if you buy several individual spoons. The matching five-piece set can make more sense when you need a complete basic kit, but do not buy duplicates simply to create a coordinated look.
Choose it if: you are furnishing a first kitchen and prefer a deep bowl with generous handle clearance.
7. Sabatier All-Purpose Spoon — best for thick mixtures and deep cookware
The Sabatier All-Purpose Spoon is the large, sturdy option. Food & Wine found it especially suited to thick stews and batters, where a lightweight, narrow spoon can flex or feel underpowered.

A large spoon can be cumbersome for small hands, crowded in a shallow skillet, and tiring during long stirring tasks. It is best viewed as a high-capacity tool rather than the universal winner.
Choose it if: you make chili, thick stews, large batches of batter, or other dense foods. Skip it if: you cook mostly in small pans or have limited grip strength.

8. Crate & Barrel Acacia Utensils, Set of 5 — best everyday starter set
The Crate & Barrel Acacia set includes five tools, including a pasta spoon, slotted spoon, spoon, and spatula variants. The listed set price is $109.95; the listed open-stock total is $113.75, so the set offers only a modest price advantage but gives you a coordinated group immediately.
Its strength is coverage: a first kitchen gets more than five versions of the same rounded spoon. Before purchasing, confirm the exact included shapes because retailers can revise set contents. Look for a genuinely useful combination of a solid spoon, slotted spoon, flat turner, and pasta tool.

Best for: a first apartment, a wedding gift, or a cook replacing several mismatched tools at once. Not best for: someone who already owns a good turner and spoon and only needs one excellent utensil.
9. Williams Sonoma Walnut Essentials, Set of 5 — best premium set
The Williams Sonoma Walnut Essentials set is the presentation-focused splurge. The listed $199.95 set includes a ladle, turner, spoon, slotted spoon, and tongs. At the listed price, it works out to roughly $40 per piece before tax and shipping.
Walnut offers dark color and premium visual appeal, but appearance alone does not prove better cooking performance. The justification for this set is its complete, coordinated range and giftability—not an assumption that walnut is categorically safer or more durable than every beech, maple, acacia, or teak alternative.
Best for: a design-conscious kitchen or substantial gift. Think twice if: you want the lowest cost per useful tool or prefer to choose each utensil by shape.

10. Wottish Wooden Spoons for Cooking — best budget starter set, subject to verification
Food & Wine positions the five-, six-, and seven-piece Wottish versions as value starter sets made from acacia. This is potentially the lowest-cost route to a group of basic tools, but the exact piece count, seller, construction, finish, and current listing should be checked before buying.
Marketplace listings can change faster than editorial pages. Confirm that the set you receive contains the advertised tools, has no open seams or rough edges, and states appropriate food-contact and care information. Do not choose it solely because the word acacia appears in the listing.
Best for: a strict starter-kit budget when the current seller and specifications check out.
11. Williams Sonoma Olivewood Spoons, Set of 4 — best multi-spoon set
The Williams Sonoma Olivewood Spoons set includes large, small, slotted, and scraper spoon shapes. The listed price is $99.95, or about $25 per spoon at the snapshot price.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This is a better fit than a broad utensil set for cooks who specifically want several spoon geometries. The scraper shape should be useful around pan corners, while the slotted spoon handles foods and liquids differently from the solid models. It does not replace a flat metal or silicone turner, and it is still a hand-wash wooden set.
Best for: cooks who stir, sauté, and serve often and want multiple spoon profiles without buying a large assortment.
Serving and specialty wooden kitchen tools
12. Crate & Barrel Walnut Servers, Set of 2 — best serving utensils
The Crate & Barrel Walnut Servers are solid black walnut with tapered handles and are identified as FSC-certified. They are designed for salads and serving, not for replacing a cooking spoon in a hot pan.
The FSC claim is more specific than an unqualified description such as “sustainable wood”: it identifies a certification associated with the listed product. Even so, certification of the wood does not change the care requirement. The manufacturer specifies hand washing.
Best for: a giftable salad-server set or a dining table where walnut’s color is an advantage. Do not buy them as: your only stovetop utensils.
13. Microplane Olivewood-Handled Paddle Graters — best wood-handled specialty tool
The Microplane Olivewood-Handled Paddle Graters combine an olivewood handle with a metal grating surface. Williams Sonoma lists multiple configurations from $44.95 to $95.95.
The working performance here comes primarily from the stainless grating surface and the particular blade configuration; the olivewood handle affects grip, appearance, and care. Choose the blade style for the foods you grate rather than paying for wood alone. Confirm the exact model’s cleaning instructions because the wood handle and metal surface may have different requirements.
14. Williams Sonoma Classic Pastry Tools Ultimate Set — best wood-accented baking set
The Williams Sonoma Classic Pastry Tools Ultimate Set uses beechwood details with stainless-steel blades and pastry functions. The listed price is $139.95.
This is a baking set, not a collection of wooden cooking spoons. Its value depends on whether you need the pastry functions—such as cutting, shaping, or handling dough—rather than simply wanting wood in the kitchen. Stainless working edges can outperform wood for some pastry jobs, while the beechwood details provide the traditional appearance and a comfortable grip.
What was considered but not counted as one of the 14
Le Creuset Revolution Scraping Spoon: Food & Wine describes a beechwood scraper with a curved profile and hanging eyelet, which sounds promising for fond and pan-corner work. However, the linked Le Creuset product URL returned a 404 during verification. It should not be treated as a current purchase recommendation unless a current official product page or replacement model is located. Le Creuset’s general care guidance still supports hand washing and appropriate wood care.
Made In Rolling Pin: a 20-inch beechwood baking tool listed at $29. It is useful if you bake, but it is not a cooking utensil and therefore is not counted here.

Victorinox Wood 3-Piece Carving Set: Swiss stainless-steel carving blades with walnut handles. It belongs in a carving-knife category, not a wooden-utensil ranking.
Microplane Butter Blade: a stainless-steel blade with walnut handle and protective cover. The official page showed $15.99 but marked it sold out, so availability should be confirmed before consideration.
A Bar Above Wooden Muddler: a 12-inch beechwood cocktail tool. It is a good example of a wooden kitchen tool but not a cooking utensil substitute.
Lohoner Wooden Utensil Holder: an acacia crock with a rotating base. It is storage and deliberately excluded from the 14-item count.
How to choose by task
For scraping browned fond
Choose a spoon with a broad, angled, relatively flat working edge. The Made In spoon is the strongest documented option because its head works as a spoon-spatula hybrid and can reach pan corners. A dedicated scraper spoon can be useful, but the Le Creuset model listed in the broader roundup was not available at the linked official page during verification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Wood is appropriate for delicate cookware, but do not attack stuck-on food with a cracked, splintered, or gritty edge. Deglaze with liquid and use gentle pressure instead of treating a wooden spoon like a pry bar.
For deep pots
Prioritize handle clearance and control, not length alone. The 15.2-inch Sur La Table spoon gives plenty of reach; the large Sabatier is useful when the contents are thick; and the long-handled Crate & Barrel Acacia Spoon is a reasonable beginner option. A very long or heavy spoon can become tiring, especially for smaller cooks.
For small hands or limited grip strength
Look at shorter, lighter spoons in roughly the 13- to 14-inch range, then consider bowl depth and balance. The Made In’s 12.75-inch length may feel more controllable than a 15-inch model, while the Sabatier may be too large. Food & Wine’s tested coverage also treats shorter tools as potentially better for smaller hands, but hand fit is personal rather than a universal specification.
For nonstick or enameled cookware
Smooth, intact wood is generally a nonscoring choice. Le Creuset specifically describes its beechwood utensils as safe for its cookware and recommends wood for enameled cast iron in its cookware guidance. That does not mean wood cannot cause damage under every circumstance: a splinter, chipped edge, grit, or trapped debris can scratch or mark a surface. “Safe for all cookware” should mean compatible during normal use—not immune to misuse.
For baking
Choose the Williams Sonoma pastry set if you need several pastry-specific tools. Choose the Made In or another broad spoon if your baking need is simply mixing batter. A rolling pin is a better purchase than either when the real problem is dough rolling.
For serving
Choose the Crate & Barrel Walnut Servers for salads and table service. Their shape and finish are intended for serving rather than stirring over heat. A serving set should not be judged by the same criteria as a pan spoon.
Wood species: useful differences, not a universal winner
Species affects density, grain, feel, appearance, and price, but the construction and care instructions usually matter more than the label alone.
- Olivewood: dense, smooth, and highly variable in grain. It is often more expensive and especially attractive for gifts and serving pieces.
- Beech: common, sturdy, and relatively affordable. It is used in the Made In spoon and many traditional kitchen tools, but still needs prompt drying.
- Acacia: common in contemporary sets and available in many shapes. Individual products vary in construction and finish, so “acacia” is not a complete quality assessment.
- Teak: naturally oily and often described as moisture-resistant. That does not make a teak spoon dishwasher-safe, and sourcing statements should be verified rather than assumed.
- Maple: common in handmade premium utensils and generally associated with hard, close-grained construction. Earlywood’s tested spoon is a maple example.
- Walnut: dark, attractive, and common in premium serving and utensil sets. It is usually chosen as much for appearance as for function.
- Cherry: common in handmade American utensils, including products made from wild Pennsylvania cherry. Grain and color deepen with use.
- Bamboo: technically a grass rather than a conventional hardwood. Claims such as organic, non-toxic, or single-piece construction are product-specific and should not be inferred automatically.
Is single-piece construction important?
Yes, it is a useful selection criterion. A spoon carved from one piece of wood has no glue joint between a handle and head, removing one common failure point. Look for a continuous, smooth surface without open seams, persistent fuzziness, splinters, or decorative grooves where food can collect.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That does not mean every joined or laminated utensil is unsafe. A glued product is not automatically toxic when the maker identifies appropriate food-contact materials. The important questions are whether the construction is sound, the adhesive or finish is appropriate for food contact, and the care instructions match the product.
The FDA Food Code requires food-contact materials in covered food-service contexts to be safe, durable, smooth, easily cleanable, and resistant to chipping, scratching, and decomposition. Use those as sensible home-buying criteria, but do not treat the code as a blanket ban on wooden spoons.

Are wooden utensils safe for nonstick cookware?
Usually, yes, when the utensil is smooth and intact. Wood is commonly selected for nonstick and enameled surfaces because it is less likely to score them than metal. A smooth wooden spoon is gentle; it is not indestructible or magically scratch-proof.
Stop using a utensil if its edge becomes splintered, gritty, deeply cracked, moldy, or coated with a flaking finish. Also wash away abrasive particles before putting it against a delicate pan. The cookware’s own instructions take priority.

Are wooden utensils antibacterial or non-toxic?
Do not buy a wooden utensil on the assumption that it sanitizes itself. Microbial behavior varies with wood species, finish, moisture, surface condition, organism, and test method. A recent study found lower recovery of some bacteria from maple than from HDPE under particular conditions, but that does not establish that a home spoon kills bacteria or eliminates cross-contamination risk. See the published research record.
The responsible claim is simpler: wood is a practical food-contact material when it is smooth, intact, cleaned, and thoroughly dried. Natural properties are not a substitute for sanitation. Likewise, non-toxic is not a complete product description. To evaluate that claim, you would need information about the wood, adhesive if any, coating, and finish. “Chemical-free” is not a meaningful standard for a finished consumer product.
How to clean, oil, and store wooden utensils
- Remove food promptly. Do not let sauce, egg, starch, or meat dry onto the surface.
- Wash by hand. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft scrubber. Clean the entire utensil, including the handle and any hole or joint.
- Rinse thoroughly. Soap and food residue should not remain in the grain.
- Dry immediately. Wipe the utensil and place it in a well-ventilated rack until fully dry. Do not store wet wood tightly packed in a crock or drawer.
- Do not soak. Prolonged immersion encourages swelling, raised grain, warping, and eventual cracking.
- Oil only when needed. Apply a thin coat of food-grade mineral oil or the manufacturer’s approved conditioner when the surface looks dry or feels rough. Leave it to absorb, then wipe away all excess before use.
- Replace damaged tools. Deep cracks, splinters, mold, severe warping, or a flaking finish are reasons to stop using the utensil.
There is no universal monthly oiling schedule. Frequency depends on species, finish, washing habits, climate, and how dry the wood looks. Food-grade mineral oil is a common choice because it does not dry out or become rancid like many edible oils. Earlywood and Jonathan’s Spoons care guidance warn that edible oils such as olive, sesame, and walnut can become sticky or rancid; use coconut oil or beeswax blends only when the manufacturer specifically approves them. Never use furniture oil or an unidentified wax on a food-contact utensil.
A little raised grain after the first wash can occur with unfinished wood. A suitable scrub pad may smooth minor fuzziness, but persistent roughness, splintering, or finish failure means the utensil should be retired. Jonathan’s Spoons also recommends replacement when heat and stress eventually produce a crack or split.

What if the utensil touched raw meat?
Do not move a spoon directly from raw meat to ready-to-eat food. Wash it promptly with warm, soapy water. If sanitizing is necessary, clean first and then use only a product labeled for food-contact surfaces, following its directions.
The USDA FSIS guidance emphasizes cleaning before sanitizing and provides general food-contact sanitizing guidance, including unscented chlorine bleach diluted according to its instructions. That is a food-safety contingency, not a routine maintenance treatment for a premium finished wood spoon. Repeated bleach exposure may damage the finish, so follow the product maker’s care instructions and replace a utensil that cannot be cleaned effectively.
Wood versus silicone, nylon, metal, and composite
| Material | Advantages | Trade-offs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Quiet, attractive, comfortable, and generally gentle on delicate cookware | Usually hand-wash only; can absorb odors, stain, swell, crack, or splinter | Cooks willing to wash and dry tools promptly |
| Silicone | Flexible, useful around pan edges, and often dishwasher-safe | Quality and heat performance vary; may not feel as rigid or traditional as wood | Dishwasher users and cooks who want a flexible scraper |
| Nylon | Inexpensive and commonly dishwasher-friendly | Can soften, deform, or discolor under high heat depending on the product | Budget kitchens prioritizing easy care |
| Metal | Rigid, durable, and precise for turning or scraping | Can damage many nonstick and delicate enamel surfaces | Uncoated stainless or cast-iron cookware |
| Paper-fiber composite | Wood-like appearance and often easier care than solid wood | Not solid wood; care and heat limits are model-specific | Readers who want a wood look without ordinary wood maintenance |
For readers who need every utensil to go in the dishwasher, solid wood is usually the wrong material. Food & Wine’s spoon testing discusses Epicurean’s wood-like paper-fiber composite tools as an alternative after one tested model was discontinued. A manufacturer-designated dishwasher-safe composite, silicone, or nylon tool is a better choice than putting a hand-wash wooden spoon through repeated high-heat cycles.
Buy one excellent spoon or a complete set?
Buy one spoon when you cook in a small kitchen, already own a flat turner and slotted tool, or care more about the exact head shape than matching materials. The Made In is the most versatile documented design; the Sur La Table is the strongest all-purpose long spoon; and the FAAY is a sensible value-oriented single-tool choice.
Buy a set when you are furnishing a first kitchen, replacing several worn utensils, or giving a coordinated gift. Compare the actual pieces rather than the item count. A useful set should contain meaningfully different tools: a solid spoon, slotted spoon, flat turner, ladle or pasta tool, and perhaps tongs. Five nearly identical spoons are not better than one good spoon.
Also compare the set price with open-stock pricing. The Crate & Barrel Acacia set is listed at $109.95 versus $113.75 for the listed individual pieces, a small savings that may still be worthwhile for convenience. The Williams Sonoma walnut set is a premium presentation purchase, while the Williams Sonoma olivewood four-spoon set is aimed specifically at cooks who want multiple spoon shapes.
Safety, sourcing, and sustainability checks
- Food-contact finish: Prefer a manufacturer that identifies the finish as food-safe and publishes care instructions.
- Surface condition: Reject open seams, persistent fuzzy grain, splinters, deep grooves, and flaking coatings.
- Construction: Single-piece construction reduces joint failure, but a well-made joined product is not automatically unsafe.
- Certification: A specific FSC certification, such as the one listed for the Crate & Barrel walnut servers, is stronger evidence than an unexplained “sustainable” claim.
- Origin: Manufacturing location can change, so verify claims such as made in Hungary, made in the United States, or made in Italy on the current product page.
- Warranty: A lifetime warranty is a warranty term, not a promise that the spoon will last forever under soaking, dishwasher use, or neglect.
- Commercial use: The FDA Food Code is a model code for retail and food-service operations, not a blanket home-kitchen law. States and local jurisdictions may adopt different versions or interpretations, and a home-use product is not automatically approved for commercial service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can wooden utensils scratch nonstick cookware?
Smooth, intact wood is generally gentle on nonstick and enameled cookware. A cracked, splintered, gritty, or food-encrusted utensil can still damage a surface, so inspect and replace damaged tools.
Can wooden spoons go in the dishwasher?
Most should not. Repeated heat, water, and drying cycles can swell, warp, crack, or roughen wood. Follow the exact manufacturer instructions; choose silicone, nylon, or a dishwasher-designated composite if dishwasher cleaning is essential.
How often should a wooden utensil be oiled?
There is no reliable calendar schedule. Apply a thin coat of food-grade mineral oil or an approved conditioner when the wood looks dry or feels rough, then wipe away excess. Do not oil the utensil while it is wet.
When should a wooden spoon be replaced?
Replace it when it develops deep cracks, splinters, mold, severe warping, trapped food damage, or a flaking finish. Minor raised grain may sometimes be smoothed, but persistent roughness is a reason to stop using it.
Are wooden utensils naturally antibacterial?
Wood’s interaction with microbes varies by species, moisture, finish, surface condition, and organism. Some studies find lower bacterial recovery from certain wood surfaces under specific conditions, but wood does not replace cleaning, drying, or safe handling.
The Bottom Line
For most home cooks, buy one good spoon before buying a large set. The Sur La Table Olivewood Cook’s Spoon is the best-supported all-purpose choice from the documented test, while the Made In offers the most versatile shape and the FAAY is the better value-oriented single utensil. Choose the Crate & Barrel Acacia set for a practical first kitchen, the Williams Sonoma Walnut set for a premium gift, and a dishwasher-safe composite, silicone, or nylon tool if hand washing is a deal-breaker.
