6 Kitchen Trends That Defined 2025—and How to Use Them Without Regretting Your Remodel

The 2025 kitchen forecast favored intentional color, curated display storage, mixed materials, expressive hardware, healthier cooking, and social layouts. Here is what the data supported—and how to use each trend wisely in a remodel.

The six kitchen directions forecast for 2025 were big, intentional color; curated open display storage; mixed materials; sculptural hardware; more resource-conscious cooking and ventilation; and kitchens designed for gathering and multitasking. The forecast was broadly right—but the word everywhere needs qualification.

Color became more personal without eliminating white kitchens. Open shelving remained a selective display feature rather than a replacement for closed storage. Contrasting islands and layered materials gained meaningful support in renovation data, while sculptural hardware was more clearly a designer-led signal than a measured mass-market shift. The most durable change was functional: kitchens increasingly had to support cooking, entertaining, working, storing, and everyday household life.

A note on timing: This is a retrospective on a 2025 forecast, not a claim that every kitchen adopted these features. The original Martha Stewart forecast was published on November 15, 2024, and grouped the ideas into six categories: Big Color, Open Shelving, Mixed Materials, Hardware Reimagined, Keeping It Green, and Room to Gather.

What did everywhere actually mean?

Trend coverage usually measures visibility: what appears in designer projects, showrooms, product launches, magazines, and social feeds. Renovation surveys measure something different: what homeowners planned or completed. Industry forecasts measure professional expectations. Those are useful signals, but they are not interchangeable.

  • MEASUREMENT: Hole centers(CC):3 Inch(76mm), Total Length:5 inch(127mm), Diameter:1/2 inch(12mm) Projection:1-1/4 inch(32mm)

The evidence behind the 2025 forecast came from several perspectives:

  • Designer commentary: The Martha Stewart article supplied the six editorial categories and examples, but its claims were based mainly on interviews and design observation.
  • Industry forecasting: The National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2025 Kitchen Trends Report surveyed 523 North American kitchen-and-bath professionals—61% designers, with the remainder including showroom professionals, dealers, remodelers, contractors, and architects. It forecast the following three years rather than counting completed homeowner projects.
  • Homeowner activity: The 2025 Houzz U.S. Kitchen Trends Study surveyed 1,620 U.S. homeowners who had completed, were undertaking, or were planning a renovation. It was conducted from June 27 through July 30, 2024.
  • Architect observations: The AIA Home Design Trends Survey compared professional observations from the fourth quarter of 2024 with the fourth quarter of 2023. Its increasing-minus-decreasing figures are diffusion-style indicators, not percentages of homeowners who installed a feature.

Read the six trends below as a practical guide to the direction of kitchen design—not as proof that any one detail became universal.

1. Big color became intentional color

What the trend was

The color story of 2025 was not simply that white kitchens were finished. It was a move toward more personality: painted cabinetry, warmer natural tones, colored appliances, patterned backsplashes, English-style kitchens, and carefully chosen accent colors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NKBA described the wider direction as light, warm, and natural, alongside more personalized and thoughtful statement-making design. The designer examples in the original forecast included colorful cabinetry, stronger pattern, and colorful appliances.

How common was it?

White remained the most common overall cabinet color in the Houzz data at 33%, followed by wood at 23%. Green and blue each accounted for about 5% of upgraded cabinet colors. At the same time, 24% of renovating homeowners selected contrasting upper and lower cabinet colors. White led among upper cabinets at 44%, while wood led lower cabinets at 33% and blue appeared on 23% of lower cabinets.

The defensible conclusion is that color became more strategic and personal, not that saturated cabinetry replaced neutral kitchens. Houzz’s cabinet and storage findings support a layered palette more than an all-or-nothing color revolution.

How to use it

  • Low commitment: Paint the island, pantry, or breakfast nook. Add colorful stools, a runner, pendant shades, artwork, ceramics, or a contrasting window treatment.
  • Medium commitment: Refinish cabinet doors, replace the backsplash, introduce a colored range hood, or use a different cabinet color on the island.
  • High commitment: Specify fully colored custom cabinetry, coordinated colored appliances, or a highly patterned stone or tile installation.

Watch-outs

Request cabinet samples and view them in morning, afternoon, and evening light. Warm LEDs, cool LEDs, and daylight can make the same paint appear substantially different. Strong color also competes with veined stone, patterned tile, and colorful appliances, so establish which element will lead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dark or highly saturated colors can make a small or poorly lit kitchen feel more enclosed. Fully colored custom cabinetry is expensive to reverse, while a painted island gives you personality with less resale risk. Muted olive, sage, dusty blue, clay, mushroom, warm cream, and other softened tones can feel distinctive without overwhelming the room.

More timeless alternative: Keep the main cabinetry neutral or wood-toned and put the strongest color on a replaceable island, backsplash, wall, or furnishing.

2. Open shelving evolved into curated display storage

What the trend was

Open shelving remained attractive because it makes everyday dishes, inherited objects, ceramics, and artwork part of the room. But the practical 2025 version was selective: one or two display zones surrounded by drawers, cabinets, and pantry storage.

How common was it?

Houzz found that 52% of renovating homeowners added or upgraded an accent cabinet or shelf. Within that group, 36% chose glass-front cabinets, 23% chose Shaker-style accent cabinets, and 16% chose open shelves without doors. That makes open shelves a visible accent, not evidence that homeowners were abandoning upper cabinets.

Ravinte Cabinet Handles, Brushed Nickel,5" Length,3" Hole Center,30 Pack
  • 365-Day Evaluation: We believe you'll find value in your Ravinte handles. Use them for a full year, and if they don't meet your needs, we're here to help
  • If you're replacing your handle, measure and ensure the center to center hole spacing of the current handle is 3 Inches Installing new cabinet handles, drill two holes with center to center spacing of 3 Inches
  • ENDURING & STRONG: 30 bar pulls made of stainless steel finished with classic satin nickel coordinates well with other nickel appliances and accessoriess
  • Simple look: The Brushed Nickel cabinet handles have a wide appeal across a range of kitchen cabinet doors and drawers The Satin Nickel handles have a clean and timeless look that works with farmhouse, vintage, traditional and transitional styles
  • MEASUREMENT: 3 Inch(76mm), Total Length:5 inch(127mm), Diameter:1/2 inch(12mm) Projection:1-1/4 inch(32mm)

Closed organization was much more prevalent. Popular interior storage features included pullout waste or recycling bins at 67%, cookie-sheet and tray organizers at 59%, spice storage and microwave storage at 43% each, and deep drawers at 36%.

How to use it

  • Low commitment: Add one or two properly anchored floating shelves, remove the doors from a small cabinet section, or use a freestanding shelf or antique hutch.
  • Medium commitment: Add glass-front doors, a shallow display niche, under-shelf lighting, or a mix of closed cabinets and open shelves.
  • High commitment: Replace a full run of upper cabinets or build custom shelves around a hood, window, or open pantry.

Watch-outs

Shelves near a range collect grease and dust. They expose clutter, reduce concealed storage, and require the household to keep the displayed items edited and coordinated. Heavy dishes need properly anchored brackets and suitable wall blocking. Shelves above or close to a cooktop must not interfere with ventilation, cooking clearances, or the safe handling of hot cookware.

Open shelving may be a poor fit for households with young children, pets, allergies, frequent frying, or a large collection of mismatched and rarely used dishes. Glass-front cabinets offer a display effect while reducing some exposure to grease and dust.

For accessibility, frequently used storage should be within a practical reach zone. NKBA planning guidance places frequently used storage approximately 15 to 48 inches above the floor, with higher storage treated as less accessible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More timeless alternative: Use one curated display area and preserve generous closed storage for everything that is difficult to keep clean or visually orderly.

3. Mixed materials replaced the matched-set kitchen

What the trend was

Rather than matching every surface, designers increasingly layered wood, painted cabinetry, stone, tile, metal, and glass. The goal was controlled contrast—not random maximalism.

Common combinations included white oak with honed stone and aged brass, painted perimeter cabinets with a stained island, a wood island top with perimeter quartz, matte cabinetry with reflective tile, or handmade-looking tile paired with simple cabinetry.

How common was it?

This was one of the better-supported directions. In NKBA’s professional survey, 67% agreed that mix-and-match backsplashes add a unique touch, and 84% agreed that lighting fixtures would increasingly feature differing materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Houzz found that 24% of renovating homeowners used a different countertop material on the island than on the main counters. Among contrasting island countertops, butcher block or a wood slab led at 31%, followed by engineered quartz at 23%, granite at 16%, quartzite at 10%, and marble at 7%.

Those figures describe a meaningful minority, not a majority. They do show that a contrasting island or secondary material had become an accepted renovation strategy.

How to use it

  • Low commitment: Introduce wood stools, a freestanding island, cutting boards, lighting, or a ceramic collection that contrasts with the existing finishes.
  • Medium commitment: Refinish the island, replace the backsplash, add a wood accent cabinet, or use a different island countertop.
  • High commitment: Combine multiple cabinet materials, different island and perimeter surfaces, handmade tile, and custom metal details.

A useful rule is to choose one dominant material, one supporting material, and one accent finish. Repeat a color, texture, or metal at least twice so the room appears deliberate rather than assembled from unrelated samples.

Know the maintenance difference

  • Engineered quartz: Usually low maintenance and nonporous, but it is not heat-proof. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use trivets for hot cookware. Caesarstone’s care guidance is one example of product-specific limitations.
  • Quartzite: Natural-stone composition varies. Sealing can improve stain resistance but does not make the surface stain-proof. Consult the fabricator and stone-care guidance from the Natural Stone Institute.
  • Marble: Can show etching and staining more readily than many engineered surfaces. Choose it with an acceptance of patina, not an expectation of maintenance-free performance.
  • Wood countertops: Need more care around sinks, standing water, knives, and heat than stone or engineered surfaces.
  • Handmade tile: Provides texture and variation, but irregular surfaces and grout lines can be harder to clean.

More timeless alternative: Keep the cabinet and main-counter materials restrained, then add contrast through a replaceable backsplash, lighting, stools, or island finish.

4. Hardware became a small-scale statement feature

What the trend was

Cabinet hardware moved beyond being purely functional. Designer commentary highlighted sculptural pulls, artistic knobs, novelty handles, candy-colored accents, and hardware treated like jewelry for the kitchen.

How common was it?

This is the least quantified of the six trends. NKBA’s research supports broader personalization, mix-and-match finishes, and thoughtful statement-making, but the available public summaries do not establish a national adoption percentage for sculptural hardware. It is more accurate to call this a designer-led aesthetic signal and a visible product direction than a proven mass-market behavior.

How to use it

  • Low commitment: Replace knobs, update the island hardware, or add colorful pulls to a pantry or bar cabinet.
  • Medium commitment: Use sculptural hardware throughout the kitchen, mixing knobs and pulls according to cabinet function.
  • High commitment: Commission artisan hardware and coordinate it with lighting, faucets, furniture, and other metal details.

Choose hardware as a construction detail, not just a decoration

Test the grip before ordering. Oversized pulls can interfere with adjacent doors or narrow aisles, while deeply textured or porous hardware can trap grime. Unlacquered brass will change over time; that patina may be the point, but it should be an informed choice.

Check the cabinet construction and attachment points before installing heavy pulls. On a new build, the hardware layout should be coordinated with door and drawer sizes, appliance panels, corner conditions, and accessibility needs. Mixing finishes can look intentional when each finish is repeated, but too many unrelated metals can make the kitchen appear accidental.

More timeless alternative: Use a classic, comfortable pull on most cabinets and reserve the expressive finish for the island, pantry, or furniture-style section.

5. Green kitchens became cleaner, healthier, and more resource-conscious

What the trend was

The most useful interpretation of keeping it green goes beyond green-colored cabinets or recycled-looking tile. It includes induction cooking, effective outdoor ventilation, efficient appliances, water-conscious fixtures, durable materials, reuse, responsible wood sourcing, and better indoor-air quality.

NKBA identified induction cooktops, steam ovens, electric cooking, renewable materials, and vintage or reused items as part of the conversation. However, NKBA also described broad sustainability adoption as nascent. Sustainable choices were gaining attention and availability, not yet universal practice.

Why induction gained attention

The AIA’s Q4 2024 survey identified induction cooking appliances as the leading kitchen-product category by its increasing-minus-decreasing popularity measure. Steam ovens, third-rack dishwashers, mixed countertop materials, smart appliances, concealed lighting, and drinking-water filtration also appeared among categories gaining professional interest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The U.S. Department of Energy reports that induction heats cookware directly and can be up to three times as efficient as gas cooking in the cited comparison and up to 10% more efficient than conventional smooth-top electric cooking. ENERGY STAR reports that approximately 85% of induction heating energy is transferred to cookware, compared with about one-third for gas products, and notes that induction requires ferromagnetic cookware. See ENERGY STAR’s electric cooking guidance.

Efficiency does not automatically equal lower utility bills or a smaller total environmental footprint. Results depend on cooking frequency, utility rates, the electricity supply, appliance life, installation impacts, and whether the appliance is replacing a functioning product.

Before switching to induction

  • Test your cookware with a magnet or confirm compatibility with the manufacturer.
  • Have an electrician check the required circuit, panel capacity, and local electrical requirements.
  • Plan for temporary loss of cooking capacity during installation.
  • Consider how the home will cook during a power outage.
  • Keep ventilation in the plan. Induction eliminates combustion at the cooktop but does not eliminate grease, moisture, odors, or cooking particles.

Ventilation is part of the green and healthy-kitchen conversation

The EPA recommends turning on an outdoor-vented range hood whenever cooking and leaving it on for 10 to 20 minutes afterward. It also recommends using back burners when possible and cleaning the hood’s grease filter routinely.

NKBA planning guidance recommends a correctly sized ducted ventilation system with a minimum of 150 cubic feet per minute. The same document identifies a 100 cfm code minimum in its cited International Residential Code context and notes that hoods above 400 cfm may require makeup air. Local code, the appliance manufacturer, and the mechanical design of the home control. The EPA’s remodeling guidance explains why larger fans and combustion appliances may require makeup-air planning.

Material choices need specific claims

Instead of calling a product simply eco-friendly, ask what makes it preferable: recycled content, reclaimed material, responsible forestry certification, lower emissions, local sourcing, long service life, repairability, or reuse. NKBA identifies reclaimed wood, recycled glass tile, formaldehyde-free MDF, NAUF plywood and particleboard, and FSC-certified cabinetry and wood products as options to investigate.

Low commitment: Use LED lighting, improve hood use and filter maintenance, add recycling or compost pullouts, and buy durable secondhand furniture or lighting.

Medium commitment: Test portable induction, add water filtration, improve ducted ventilation, choose certified wood, or install a steam function only if the household will use and maintain it.

High commitment: Convert from gas to induction, upgrade electrical capacity, install a ducted hood and any required makeup-air system, and specify lower-emission and responsibly sourced cabinetry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More timeless alternative: Prioritize ventilation, durable construction, efficient replacement appliances, repairable components, and a layout that will remain useful for decades.

6. The kitchen became a room to gather and multitask

What the trend was

The kitchen increasingly functioned as a social room, work area, dining space, storage center, beverage station, and household command post—not just a place to prepare food. Designers were planning islands, banquettes, breakfast nooks, working pantries, coffee bars, flex offices, pet-feeding zones, and connections to outdoor entertaining areas.

NKBA’s 2025 retrospective described open kitchens, multifunctional islands, banquettes, integrated storage, beverage stations, eat-in kitchens, adjacent mudrooms, and flex offices as part of this evolution. Its sustainability and wellness reporting found that 63% of respondents cited making the kitchen social and welcoming as a popular design theme, while 72% of homeowners desired a stronger connection between the kitchen and outdoors.

How common was it?

Houzz reported that 58% of renovating homeowners added or upgraded an island. Among homeowners adding island storage, 80% chose drawers and 79% chose cabinets with doors. Thirty-five percent expanded the kitchen footprint; 29% took space from the dining room and 12% from the living room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AIA professional observations also identified working pantries, coffee bars, natural light, outdoor kitchens, computer work or recharge areas, and double-island work-and-eating areas as features gaining interest.

  • [Widely Compatible]: These handles can be applied to a variety of kitchen cabinets, desk drawers, cupboards, doors, dressers, wardrobes, closets, lockers, chests, bookcases and vanities in kitchen, bedroom and bathroom to make your home elegant and stylish.

How to use it

  • Low commitment: Add comfortable stools, a coffee station, a charging drawer, better task lighting, a movable table, or a rolling prep cart.
  • Medium commitment: Upgrade the existing island with drawers, outlets, or seating; add a pantry wall, breakfast nook, beverage refrigerator, or visual connection to the dining room.
  • High commitment: Expand into an adjacent room, add a working pantry or scullery, create multiple work zones, connect to an outdoor entertaining area, or install a large island with seating, storage, and appliances.

Do not add an island without checking clearances

An island is useful only when the room can support it. NKBA recommends a work aisle of at least 42 inches for one cook and 48 inches for multiple cooks. Walkways should be at least 36 inches. Behind seating, allow at least 32 inches where no traffic passes and at least 36 inches where people must walk behind diners; 44 inches is recommended for easier passage.

Refrigerators, ovens, and microwaves also need appropriate landing space and door clearance. A large island can block an appliance, create collisions between cooks and seated diners, or make a compact kitchen less functional. A peninsula, narrow worktable, movable cart, or no island may be the better design.

Plan for changing needs

Houzz found that homeowners addressing aging-related needs commonly added pullout cabinets, more lighting, wide drawer pulls, rounded countertops, nonslip flooring, wider doorways, lower fixtures or countertops, and shallow sinks. These are useful universal-design ideas, but they are not all legal requirements for every private home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ADA kitchen standards apply to covered facilities and specific circumstances; ordinary single-family renovations are not automatically governed by every ADA provision. Local building codes, Fair Housing requirements where applicable, and the homeowner’s goals must be considered separately.

More timeless alternative: Improve zoning and storage before increasing square footage. A well-planned pantry wall, drawer storage, task lighting, and a comfortable dining surface may deliver more value than removing another room to create a larger kitchen.

Which 2025 trends are most likely to last?

The most durable trends solve an everyday problem. Better storage, layered lighting, outdoor-vented ventilation, comfortable circulation, accessible reach ranges, durable materials, and multifunctional zones are likely to outlast a particular paint color or hardware shape.

The easiest changes to reverse are paint, hardware, lighting, stools, artwork, rugs, and a small display shelf. Medium-commitment choices include cabinet refinishing, glass doors, backsplash tile, a beverage station, and an island countertop. The hardest and most expensive to reverse include moving walls, replacing all cabinetry, relocating plumbing or gas, upgrading electrical service, installing a large island, and changing the ventilation system.

Goal Best starting point
Add personality cheaply Paint, hardware, lighting, art, textiles, and ceramics
Improve function Deep drawers, pullout waste storage, pantry organization, and task lighting
Add warmth Wood accents, a stained island, natural textures, or a restrained material contrast
Improve cooking air quality An outdoor-vented hood, regular filter cleaning, and properly planned induction or electric cooking
Support entertaining Island storage, comfortable seating, a beverage station, or a breakfast nook
Prepare for aging Pullouts, brighter lighting, comfortable pulls, nonslip flooring, rounded edges, and reachable storage
Avoid a dated remodel Keep major fixed surfaces restrained and use replaceable elements for trendier choices

A practical checklist before construction begins

  1. Describe real behavior: List how many people cook, whether anyone works or studies in the kitchen, how often you entertain, and which appliances are used daily.
  2. Measure circulation: Confirm work aisles, walkways, seating clearances, appliance-door swings, and landing areas before approving an island or wall change.
  3. Audit storage: Count cookware, trays, small appliances, recycling containers, pantry goods, and serving pieces. Do not trade needed closed storage for a photogenic shelf.
  4. Coordinate infrastructure: Review electrical circuits, panel capacity, plumbing, gas lines, duct routes, hood discharge, makeup air, lighting, and structural conditions before selecting appliances or moving walls.
  5. Test materials: View color samples in actual lighting and ask about heat, staining, sealing, scratching, grout, patina, and repair requirements.
  6. Separate fixed from replaceable choices: Put long-life money into layout, cabinetry construction, ventilation, and durable surfaces. Use hardware, paint, lighting, and furnishings for trends that may change.
  7. Plan accessibility: Keep frequently used items reachable, provide adequate lighting, and consider pullouts, wide pulls, nonslip floors, and rounded edges if the kitchen must serve the household for many years.
  8. Check local requirements: Building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, energy, and accessibility rules vary by location. Confirm requirements with the appropriate licensed professionals and authorities having jurisdiction.

The best lesson from the 2025 forecast is not to copy a particular photograph. It is to build a kitchen with a calm, durable foundation and add personality where it can be changed. That approach makes room for color, mixed materials, expressive hardware, healthier cooking, and social uses without forcing the entire remodel to depend on a short-lived trend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are white kitchen cabinets out of style?

No. Houzz reported white as the leading overall cabinet color at 33%, with white also leading upper cabinets at 44%. The shift was toward more layered palettes, such as white paired with wood, blue, green, or a contrasting island—not the disappearance of white.

Is open shelving practical in a kitchen?

It can be practical as a small, curated display zone, especially for frequently used dishes. It is less suitable near a range, in homes that produce substantial grease, or for households that need concealed storage. Glass-front cabinets provide a similar display effect with more protection.

What should I check before installing a kitchen island?

Check work aisles, walkways, seating clearance, appliance-door swings, landing space, lighting, electrical outlets, and accessibility. NKBA recommends at least 42 inches for a one-cook work aisle, 48 inches for multiple cooks, and a 36-inch walkway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does switching to induction make a kitchen sustainable?

Induction can be more efficient at transferring energy to cookware and avoids combustion at the cooktop, but sustainability depends on the electricity source, appliance life, cooking habits, infrastructure work, and disposal of the old appliance. It also requires compatible cookware and suitable electrical capacity.

The Bottom Line

The 2025 kitchen forecast got the direction right but overstated the prevalence. The lasting opportunity is a more personal, layered, multifunctional kitchen: use color selectively, combine materials deliberately, keep display storage curated, treat hardware as an easy-to-change accent, plan induction and ventilation together, and verify every island or layout change against real clearances. Put the largest construction budget into function, durability, air quality, and storage; borrow the trend through finishes and furnishings where possible.
