The best air purifier for mold is the largest suitable unit you can afford, with a strong particle CADR, a well-sealed high-efficiency filter, and enough activated carbon to help with odors. It can reduce airborne mold spores, fragments, dust, and some musty smells—but it cannot remove established mold or fix the moisture causing it.
Use a purifier alongside leak repairs, humidity control, ventilation, cleaning, and professional remediation when necessary. The EPA’s guidance treats portable air cleaners as a supplement to source control, not a replacement for it.

These are room-and-use-case recommendations, not claims that every model has been specifically tested in a mold-contaminated home. Check the exact model, CADR, filter price, availability, and certification before buying.
What an air purifier can—and cannot—do for mold
- Airborne spores: A suitable particle purifier can capture particles as contaminated air passes through it.
- Settled spores and dust: It will not clean walls, floors, carpets, furniture, insulation, or HVAC surfaces.
- Established growth: It cannot remove a mold colony or repair the leak, condensation, or humidity problem supporting it.
- Musty odor: Activated carbon may reduce some odor compounds, but thin carbon-coated filters have limited capacity.
- Mycotoxins and gases: Do not assume an ordinary portable purifier reliably removes all mycotoxins or VOCs. CADR measures particle delivery, not gas removal.
If you see recurring growth, water damage, persistent staining, or a repeated musty smell, investigate the moisture source first. A purifier may reduce what becomes airborne while remediation is underway, but it does not make contaminated materials safe by itself.

How we chose these recommendations
The priority order is:
- Particle CADR and actual room fit
- Filter efficiency, sealing, and replacement availability
- Noise at a usable setting
- Carbon quantity for odor control
- Ozone and ionizer policy
- Operating cost, controls, warranty, and build quality
Do not rank a purifier primarily by its number of “stages,” an “H13” label, a tiny-particle percentage, maximum advertised square footage, UV, or app features. A high-efficiency filter moving too little air may deliver less clean air than a well-sealed conventional HEPA unit with substantially higher CADR.
The 11 picks, explained
1. Coway Airmega 100: best for a small bedroom
The Airmega 100 has a vacuumable pre-filter, HEPA stage, and deodorization stage. Coway lists smoke CADR of 108 cfm, dust CADR of 124 cfm, pollen CADR of 112 cfm, and 25-watt power consumption.
That makes it a sensible choice for a small, closed bedroom or office. It is not a large-room mold solution: a 200-square-foot room already calls for approximately 130 cfm under the EPA baseline, before accounting for high ceilings, open doors, or heavier contamination.
2. Levoit Core 300S: best compact budget alternative
The Core 300S suits a small bedroom or office where app control and wide availability matter. Before purchase, verify the current listing’s exact CADR and whether it describes the filter as HEPA or uses proprietary terminology. Do not infer performance from an “H13” label alone.
3. Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max: best quiet bedroom option
The Blue Pure 511i Max is aimed at compact rooms and sleepers who prioritize a small footprint and low operating noise. Blueair publishes CADR-based guidance, but its collection states that room-size figures use two air changes per hour. Compare the CADR and test assumption—not just the square-footage headline—with other brands.
Because Blueair uses electrostatic assistance in some product designs, check the current model’s ozone certification if you want purely mechanical filtration.

4. Coway Airmega 200M: best medium-room value
The Airmega 200M combines a pre-filter, deodorization filter, HEPA filter, and automatic air-quality control. It is a strong fit for a bedroom, den, or medium living room when its published CADR matches the room.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The model includes an ionizer feature. If you prefer to avoid ionization, disable it using the current model’s controls and treat mechanical filtration—not the ionizer—as the reason to buy it.
5. Winix 5500-2: best budget medium-room pick
The Winix 5500-2 is widely available and combines particle filtration with activated carbon. Its optional PlasmaWave feature should not be treated as necessary for mold spores or as a substitute for airflow. Verify the current product’s ozone documentation and disable the feature if that is your preference.
6. Levoit Vital 200S: best for pets and mold particles
The Vital 200S is useful where pet hair and dust would quickly load a main filter. Its washable pre-filter can reduce that burden, but the disposable particle filter still requires replacement.
Do not use its manufacturer coverage figure as an automatic equivalent to EPA or AHAM sizing. Check CADR against the actual room, especially in a family room or open plan.

- CAPTURES 99.97% OF ALLERGENS AND PARTICULATES* AND REDUCES VIRUSES AND BACTERIA.** The Clorox Medium Room Turbo Air Purifier has True HEPA filtration to capture 99.97%* of particles and 2 additional filters to capture larger particles and odors.
- 3 STAGE 360° FILTER: Delivers 360° air purification with 3 filters. The pre-filter catches large particles, the True HEPA filter captures 99.97%* of allergens and particulates and reduces viruses and bacteria** and the active carbon filter reduces VOCs and odors.
- IDEAL FOR MEDIUM-SIZE ROOMS. The 360° airflow pulls in air from all directions to clean rooms up to 5 times per hour when used in a room 215 sq. ft. and 1 time an hour when used in a room up to 1,000 sq. ft.****
- QUICK CLEANING WITH TURBO TIMER: Clear the air and remove odors in minutes after cooking, during wildfires or when allergen levels are high. The Turbo Timer improves air quality by increasing airflow to quickly reduce smoke, dust, pollen and more.
- CUSTOMIZE TO ANY ROOM OR SCHEDULE: Set the Turbo Timer for 10, 20 or 30 minutes of quick cleaning, choose from 4 speeds from low to turbo and select your choice of on, dim or off with the display brightness control.
8. Levoit Core 600S: best large-room value
The Core 600S is intended for large living areas and open rooms. Its smart controls are convenient, but they do not compensate for undersizing. Use the exact published or independently verified CADR and calculate the entire connected area rather than relying on a dramatic maximum-square-footage claim.
9. Medify Air MA-40: best large-room odor option
The MA-40 combines particle filtration with a carbon stage and is marketed specifically toward mold concerns. That positioning does not mean it removes mold growth. Treat H13, “99.9%,” and particle-size claims as manufacturer or test-report claims, not universal room performance.
Choose it when odor matters, then check the amount of carbon, replacement-filter price, and exact CADR. Carbon can help with a musty smell, but it cannot identify or correct the odor source.
10. Coway Airmega 400S: best for large living rooms and basements
The Airmega 400S uses a dual-filter design and is better suited to large living rooms, basements, and open-plan areas than compact models. It is physically large and expensive, so confirm that the room really needs its airflow.
Coway’s U.S. shop page displayed the 400S at $579.99 on August 16, 2026. Prices and promotions change.
11. Medify Air MA-112: best maximum-output option
The MA-112 is intended for very large spaces, heavy particle loads, or large basements. Its trade-offs are substantial: purchase price, replacement-filter cost, footprint, and noise at maximum speed.
Rank #4
- AIR PURIFIER FOR HOME: Circulates and filters air in a small bedroom (153 sq. ft.) every 12.5 minutes and large spaces (743 sq. ft.) every hour. The activated carbon filter reduces scents from cooking and pets, perfect for spring cleaning and renovations.
- CUTTING-EDGE HEPA FILTRATION: Leave allergy symptoms at the door. Our HEPA PURE filter captures 99.97% of allergens* as small as 0.1 microns**, trapping dust, pollen, and pet dander. The optional UV-C light further helps reduce airborne particles.
- YOUR AIR OF CONFIDENCE: Enjoy cleaner air, without ever thinking about it. Three speeds include a quiet sleep mode for restful nights. Replace with GermGuardian HEPA Filters B and bulbs for certified fit and performance.
- INDEPENDENTLY TESTED IN THE USA: GermGuardian air purifiers are CARB Certified, ETL Certified, and Zero Ozone Verified. Give any stuffy basement, dusty bedroom, or busy office a breath of fresh air; ideal for allergy season and high-smog summer months.
- GERMGUARDIAN: We believe homes deserve better: better products, smarter technology, and cleaner air. Since 2005, GermGuardian has helped create healthier environments for you and your family with air purifiers, humidifiers, and sanitizers.
Even this model may be inadequate for a multi-room floor with closed doors. Two appropriately placed units can work better than one oversized unit trapped in a single zone.
Best purifier by room
- Small bedroom or office: Coway Airmega 100, Levoit Core 300S, or Blueair 511i Max.
- Large bedroom: Coway Airmega 200M, Winix 5500-2, Levoit Vital 200S, or Blueair 311i Max, sized by CADR.
- Nursery: Choose a quiet, high-CADR mechanical purifier with a dimmable display and readily available filters. Avoid intentional ozone generation.
- Bathroom-adjacent area: Place the unit outside direct steam and splashing. Fix the exhaust fan first.
- Living room: Use a medium or large unit such as the Airmega 400S or Core 600S when the room is genuinely large.
- Kitchen/living open plan: Calculate the entire connected area. Cooking smoke can rapidly load filters, and carbon capacity is limited.
- Basement: Repair water intrusion, measure humidity, add a separate dehumidifier, and use a larger purifier elevated away from leaks and condensation.
- Garage or workshop: A household purifier may not be suitable for dust, solvents, or hazardous fumes. Use source-specific ventilation and respiratory protection as appropriate.
- Whole floor: Use multiple units when doors, walls, or poor circulation prevent one purifier from treating the whole floor.
How much CADR do you need?
Measure the room’s length and width, then use the EPA’s approximate minimum CADR table for an eight-foot ceiling:
| Room area | Approximate minimum CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 sq. ft. | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq. ft. | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq. ft. | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq. ft. | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq. ft. | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq. ft. | 390 cfm |
For a 12-by-15-foot bedroom, the area is 180 square feet, so the baseline is approximately 117 cfm. For a 20-by-25-foot basement, the area is 500 square feet, so the baseline is approximately 325 cfm.
These are minimum estimates, not ideal targets for every mold concern. Buy up one size when the ceiling is higher than eight feet, the area is open plan, dust is heavy, the purifier must run quietly, or an occupant has asthma.
CADR is generally measured at the highest fan speed. A purifier that meets the target only at an uncomfortable setting may be practically undersized. Auto mode can reduce fan speed when its sensor detects fewer particles, but most sensors do not specifically detect mold spores. Continuous low or medium operation may provide more consistent filtration than occasional bursts.

Bathrooms
A portable purifier is not a substitute for a working exhaust fan. Keep it away from tubs, showers, wet floors, and direct steam. If the room routinely becomes saturated, place the purifier outside the bathroom instead. Replace a filter that becomes damp, visibly dirty, or musty.

The active carbon filter reduces VOCs and odors to keep air smelling fresh.
- IDEAL FOR MEDIUM ROOMS: This medium room air purifier uses 360 degree airflow to pull in air from all directions, cleaning up to 5x per hour in 225 sq. ft. rooms and 1x per hour in spaces up to 1,000 sq. ft.****
- AUTO MODE KEEPS YOUR AIR CLEAN AROUND THE CLOCK. Select auto mode and walk away it automatically adjusts to the ideal fan speed in response to changes in your air quality detected by the air quality sensor. WHAT’S INCLUDED: 1 Clorox Medium Room Air Purifier and 1 Clorox True HEPA Filter that lasts 6-12 months.
- REPLACE FILTERS EVERY 6-12 MONTHS. After 4,380 hours, the red filter light illuminates and it's time to check and/or replace the True HEPA air filter. It's recommended to replace the filter every 6-12 months with a genuine Clorox Medium Room replacement filter (model 12030).
Basements
Use a hygrometer, repair leaks and condensation, and run a separate dehumidifier. Keep the purifier elevated and away from water. Check whether the basement connects to the HVAC return, since air movement can spread particles between zones.
Bedrooms
Choose a unit quiet enough to run continuously, with a dimmable display and affordable replacement filters. Leave several inches of clearance around the intake and exhaust, and run it before bedtime rather than expecting a short overnight cycle to compensate for a small machine.
HVAC systems
The EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest compatible filter your system can accommodate. Do not install the highest MERV rating blindly: excessive pressure drop can harm HVAC performance. Ask an HVAC professional when compatibility is uncertain. A portable purifier remains useful because it can run continuously in the occupied room while the HVAC fan is off.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIonizers, plasma, UV, and ozone
These technologies are not required to capture mold spores. The EPA advises avoiding air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone because ozone irritates the lungs. Some ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, plasma cleaners, and inadequately coated UV devices may also have ozone-emission potential.
Prefer mechanical particle filtration. If a model includes an ionizer or plasma feature, confirm that it can be disabled and check the current certification or regulator documentation. Do not describe ionization as “killing mold” without product-specific evidence.
Maintenance and failure prevention
- Vacuum or wash only components the manufacturer identifies as washable.
- Do not wash a disposable HEPA filter.
- Replace a filter that is damp, damaged, visibly moldy, or persistently musty.
- Check filters more often in basements, homes with pets, and kitchens.
- Compare machine price with replacement-filter price and stated interval over two years.
- Keep intake and exhaust paths clear.
- Clean surrounding floors and surfaces using appropriate mold-cleanup procedures; the purifier cannot clean settled contamination.
When a purifier is not enough
Escalate the problem when mold returns after cleaning, the source is hidden, there is significant water damage, porous materials are affected, HVAC contamination is suspected, or the affected area is beyond your ability to clean safely. Look for leak investigation, plumbing or roof repair, ventilation work, and professional remediation—not a stronger “mold” marketing claim.
People with asthma or persistent symptoms should consult a clinician. A purifier should not be presented as preventing asthma attacks, treating mold-related disease, or making professional remediation unnecessary.
Mold-control checklist
- Find and repair leaks, condensation, and water intrusion.
- Control humidity with ventilation and a separate dehumidifier where needed.
- Use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans.
- Clean or professionally remediate affected materials.
- Replace porous materials that cannot be adequately cleaned.
- Use an HVAC filter rated MERV 13 or the highest compatible rating.
- Choose portable CADR for the actual room—not the largest marketing number.
- Run the purifier continuously at a tolerable speed.
- Inspect and replace filters correctly.
- Call a qualified professional when contamination is extensive, hidden, recurring, or connected to HVAC systems.
