Nature’s Miracle Stain & Odor Remover for Dogs is a practical widely available choice for common dog accidents, while BISSELL Professional Pet Stain and Odor Removing Formula 77X7 is the better fit for owners who already have a compatible BISSELL carpet-cleaning machine.
The right enzyme cleaner depends less on the word “enzyme” on the bottle than on whether the formula is intended for the contaminated material. A product that works well as a carpet spot treatment may not be appropriate for untreated hardwood, leather, wool, a washing machine, or a heated carpet cleaner. This guide compares ten products by mess, surface, application method, scent, and machine compatibility.

What enzyme and bio-enzymatic cleaners actually do
Pet accidents contain organic materials such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Enzymatic cleaners use enzymes to help break down some of those materials so they can be removed rather than merely covered with fragrance. That is why these products are particularly relevant to urine, feces, vomit, blood, drool, and food residue.

Bio-enzymatic is a less standardized marketing term. It commonly refers to a formula that combines enzymes with microorganisms or live cultures, but the exact ingredients vary by brand. Biokleen, for example, describes Bac-Out as a live-culture product, while EcoStrong lists non-pathogenic bacteria, enzymes, and surfactants. Do not assume that every product labeled “bio” contains the same organisms or works in the same way.
These cleaners are not automatically disinfectants, sterilizers, or universal odor removers. They do not make every surface safe for every use, and they cannot reliably solve an odor when the liquid has soaked into carpet padding, a subfloor, upholstery foam, or another hidden layer that the product never reaches.
The 10 best enzyme cleaners, explained
1. Rocco & Roxie Stain & Odor Eliminator — best overall for mixed pet messes
Rocco & Roxie is the best all-around choice when you want one product for more than a single carpet spot. The manufacturer describes it as a professional-strength bio-enzymatic formula for urine, feces, vomit, carpets, rugs, upholstery, bedding, litter boxes, crates, cars, laundry, and other pet areas.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is especially appealing in a home with several types of finished surfaces or several kinds of accidents. The manufacturer also says the product carries the Carpet and Rug Institute Seal of Approval, which is useful supporting evidence for carpet-focused shoppers. That certification should be understood as carpet-related performance evidence, not proof that the product is suitable for every material in a house.
Choose it if: you want a versatile spray or gallon refill for routine accidents, furniture, pet beds, litter areas, and carpet.
Use caution: for cat urine that has reached padding, a light surface mist is unlikely to be enough. Apply according to the label in a quantity that reaches the contaminated layer, while avoiding excessive moisture on materials that cannot tolerate it.
2. Nature’s Miracle Stain & Odor Remover for Dogs — best widely available general option
Nature’s Miracle is a sensible choice for dog owners who want a recognizable, general-purpose enzymatic cleaner. The product is intended for urine, feces, vomit, drool, carpets, hard floors, furniture, and fabrics.
Recommended Free Tools
The label directions are particularly important. Use the product full strength where instructed, test an inconspicuous area for colorfastness, apply enough to reach the complete odor source, and keep people and pets away until the treated area is dry. Those instructions are more consequential than simply spraying the visible mark: urine odor often extends beyond the surface stain.
Do not use it on: untreated hardwood, leather, suede, silk, wool, or other specialty materials listed on the product label. Nature’s Miracle also sells a dedicated hard-floor formula; do not automatically substitute one product for another just because both carry the brand name.
Choose it if: you need a commonly available cleaner for ordinary dog accidents and are prepared to follow the surface restrictions closely.
3. Biokleen Bac-Out Carpet Stain + Odor Remover — best live-culture option
Biokleen Bac-Out is the leading choice here for readers who specifically want a live-culture bio-enzymatic product. Biokleen lists it for carpets, fabrics, furniture, and laundry. It is available as a standard spray and as a foaming spray.

The foaming version is worth considering for upholstery or vertical surfaces because foam can be easier to control than a thin liquid spray. It may also reduce dripping during an application, although it does not eliminate the need to reach the actual contaminated material.
Important scent note: Biokleen lists citrus extracts and essential-oil components. It should not be described as fragrance-free or scent-neutral. In a scent-sensitive household, test a small area and consider how the fragrance will affect the room after drying.
Rank #2
- SPOT STAIN & ODOR REMOVER: Begins to break down and remove stains immediately on contact.
- LIGHT CITRUS SCENT: Dog odor control formula gets your home smelling clean again.
- ENZYMATIC FORMULA: Continues working as long as any bio-based mess is still present.
- TRUSTED BRAND: From the maker of Nature’s Miracle products, the pet stain and odor removing brand you trust… because it works!
- SAFE FOR PETS AND HOME: When used and stored as directed, this formula can be used around your pets.
Choose it if: you prioritize a live-culture formula and need one product for carpet, fabric, furniture, or laundry.
4. Kids ‘N’ Pets Instant All-Purpose Stain & Odor Remover — best broad household cleaner
Kids ‘N’ Pets has one of the broadest stated household-use lists in this group. The brand names carpets, couches, mattresses, furniture, upholstery, hard floors, rugs, clothing, pet beds, litter boxes, kennels, car seats, tile, countertops, and artificial grass.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIts application guidance emphasizes saturation. That matters for old urine because the visible mark may be only the top of a deeper contaminated area. The directions also call for additional dwell time for older stains. Follow the product’s own timing and extraction instructions rather than assuming every enzyme cleaner should be left for the same length of time.
Machine warning: Kids ‘N’ Pets cautions against steam-cleaner heat because heat can destroy some enzymes. Do not pour it into a heated machine unless the product instructions specifically permit that use and the machine manufacturer allows the formula.
Choose it if: you want one broad household product for pet areas and occasional non-pet spills, provided the surface is approved and tested first.
5. Simple Green Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator — best straightforward dog-and-cat formula
Simple Green positions this product specifically for dogs and cats and for both new accidents and old stains. The formula uses natural enzymes and has straightforward carpet directions: saturate the affected area, scrub gently, allow it to dry, and vacuum the carpet afterward.
This is a good fit for readers who do not need a specialized machine formula or a product marketed around a particular culture or ingredient system. It is also useful when the household regularly deals with both fresh accidents and marks that were discovered later.
Choose it if: you want a dedicated pet formula with simple application steps for carpet and common pet messes.
Remember: the product still needs adequate contact with the contamination. A quick spray over a dried ring may improve the surface appearance without solving odor in the underlay.
6. ECOS Pet Stain & Odor Remover — best for ingredient transparency
ECOS is the strongest option in this comparison for readers who want more information about the enzyme system. ECOS identifies an enzymatic blend containing protease, amylase, and lipase. Those enzyme categories are associated with different types of organic soil, although the ingredient list alone does not guarantee equal performance on every accident.
ECOS says the product is Safer Choice-certified and lists it for carpet, upholstery, and hardwood. Certification and ingredient disclosure can help narrow a purchase, but they do not replace a surface test or the label’s directions.
Scent: the researched version is available in lemon scent. That makes it a poor match for someone seeking an unscented product, even if the formula otherwise fits their priorities.
Choose it if: you value an identified enzyme blend, sustainability-oriented certification, and a formula listed for carpet, upholstery, and hardwood.
Rank #3
- FOR SEVERE DOG MESSES: Powerful enzymatic formula works to eliminate tough stains and odors from dog urine, diarrhea, vomit and other bio-based accidents.
- LIGHT FRESH SCENT: Dog odor control formula gets your home smelling clean again.
- ENZYMATIC FORMULA: Continues working as long as any bio-based mess is still present.
- DISCOURAGES RESOILING: Removes the odor from even the toughest dog messes.
- SAFE FOR PETS AND HOME: When used and stored as directed, this formula can be used around your pets.
7. BISSELL Professional Pet Stain and Odor Removing Formula 77X7 — best for compatible carpet machines
BISSELL 77X7 is the machine-focused pick. BISSELL describes it as a professional-level enzyme-action formula for urine, feces, blood, and vomit and specifically lists compatibility with the ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro carpet cleaner.
This is not the right choice simply because you own a BISSELL-branded machine. Carpet cleaners differ in tanks, detergent systems, heating, dilution, and warranty requirements. Check the manual for the exact model before using any solution, and follow the formula’s dilution instructions rather than estimating a concentration.
Choose it if: you already own a compatible BISSELL carpet cleaner and want a machine solution intended for serious pet messes.
Do not choose it as: a universal spray for furniture, hardwood, laundry, or every carpet-cleaning machine. Its main advantage is compatibility with specified equipment.
8. EcoStrong Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator — best gallon-size choice for larger areas
EcoStrong is the practical large-area candidate. The manufacturer lists non-pathogenic bacteria, enzymes, and surfactants and supports use on carpets, furniture, bedding, hardwood, car upholstery, crates, and carriers. It also recommends thorough saturation for deep or old stains and says the product can be diluted for carpet cleaners.

That combination makes it attractive for multiple rooms, foster homes, kennels, repeated accidents, or anyone who expects to use more than a small spray bottle. The word “diluted” does not mean it belongs in every machine: confirm the carpet cleaner’s requirements and use the manufacturer’s stated ratio.
Availability note: availability on the official store was mixed during research, with some variants shown as sold out. Check current stock and the exact product variant before planning a large cleanup around it.
Choose it if: you need a larger quantity and the product is currently available in the formulation and size appropriate for your surfaces.
9. Petzyme Pet Stain & Odor Remover — best multi-surface alternative
Petzyme has an unusually wide stated surface range: carpets, upholstery, fabrics, furniture, litter boxes, cages, tile, wood, laminate, concrete, clothing, and vehicles. That makes it worth considering for homes, garages, carriers, utility rooms, and pet areas where one material does not dominate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The broad list is helpful, but it should not be read as permission to skip a spot test. “Wood,” for example, can include very different finishes and levels of porosity.
Choose it if: you need a multi-surface alternative that explicitly addresses both household and vehicle or animal-enclosure applications.
10. Simple Solution Extreme Stain & Odor Remover — best severe-mess candidate
Simple Solution Extreme is positioned for difficult dog and cat urine, feces, and vomit. The manufacturer describes it as a formula intended to break down, neutralize, and permanently remove difficult stains and odors. “Extreme” is best treated as a use-case description, not a promise that every odor disappears after one application.
The Carpet and Rug Institute lists the product in its Seal of Approval database, giving carpet shoppers an additional piece of product-specific information. As with any carpet cleaner, certification does not change the need to saturate deeply enough, respect the carpet manufacturer’s care instructions, and repeat the treatment when contamination has reached padding.

How to choose by mess and surface
Cat urine and repeated marking
For cat urine, prioritize depth of application over fragrance. A cat may urinate through carpet into the pad or even onto the subfloor. Surface misting can leave the actual odor source untouched. Nature’s Miracle, EcoStrong, Rocco & Roxie, and Petzyme all provide directions or claims relevant to treating deeper sources; whichever product you select, follow its label and apply enough to reach the contaminated material without damaging the floor below.
If the smell keeps returning after a complete treatment and drying cycle, the problem may be in the carpet backing, padding, subfloor, or an adjacent area. At that point, repeated spraying may not be the most efficient solution. The pad may need to be removed and replaced, or the affected subfloor may require separate cleaning and sealing appropriate to its material.
Carpets and rugs
Rocco & Roxie and Simple Solution Extreme have particularly useful carpet-related support, including Carpet and Rug Institute information. Kids ‘N’ Pets, Simple Green, ECOS, Biokleen, EcoStrong, and BISSELL also have relevant carpet directions or positioning.
Choose a product based on the full cleaning job: a small fresh spot, a large soaked area, a washable rug, a carpet-machine extraction, or a recurring odor. Carpet certification is helpful, but it does not mean a formula is automatically suitable for the rug’s backing, dye, padding, or subfloor.
Hard floors
Use an enzyme cleaner on hard flooring only when the manufacturer specifically lists that surface or the product is otherwise approved for the floor’s finish. Sealed tile, vinyl, linoleum, sealed wood, laminate, concrete, and untreated wood do not behave the same way.
Nature’s Miracle has a dedicated hard-floor formula, while other products require water-safe-surface testing. Avoid leaving excess liquid on wood or laminate, and do not treat an unfamiliar finish as if it were sealed. If a floor is newly installed, coated, waxed, or under warranty, check its care instructions before applying a biological cleaner.
Furniture and upholstery
Biokleen, Kids ‘N’ Pets, Petzyme, and EcoStrong explicitly list furniture or upholstery among their uses. Even then, begin in an inconspicuous area. Upholstery may contain dye, delicate fibers, foam, adhesives, or a backing that reacts differently from the visible fabric.
Use the smallest amount that can reach the contamination while respecting the care code and the product label. A foam product such as Biokleen’s foaming version may be easier to control on a vertical cushion, but foam is not a substitute for adequate contact time or extraction where required.
Laundry and pet bedding
Biokleen Bac-Out and Kids ‘N’ Pets are relevant laundry candidates, and Nature’s Miracle offers a separate Laundry Boost product. Use the formula according to its own laundry label and check the garment or bedding’s care instructions. Do not assume that a carpet spray belongs in a washing machine simply because it is enzymatic.
For bedding with persistent urine odor, washing without first addressing a heavily contaminated area may spread the smell through the load. Pre-treat only as directed, and do not combine products in the washer unless both labels permit the combination.
Carpet-cleaning machines
BISSELL 77X7 has explicit compatibility information for the ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro. Kids ‘N’ Pets also provides machine-use information but cautions against steam-cleaner heat. EcoStrong says it can be diluted for carpet cleaners.

Scent-sensitive homes
The products in this comparison are not uniformly unscented. Biokleen lists citrus extracts and essential oils, Nature’s Miracle Dog has a light citrus scent, ECOS lists lemon, and EcoStrong offers multiple fragranced variants. A fragrance can mask a smell temporarily and may be unpleasant to people or animals in the room; it is not evidence that the organic residue has been removed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The correct way to use an enzyme cleaner
- Remove the source. Pick up solid waste and blot liquid with absorbent towels. Avoid aggressive rubbing that spreads the contamination through carpet or fabric.
- Locate the full area. Look beyond the visible mark. For dried or recurring urine, a UV pet urine detector flashlight can help identify possible spots, but fluorescence does not prove that every glowing mark is urine. Test and identify the material before treating it.
- Read the label for that surface. Confirm that the product is intended for the carpet, floor finish, upholstery, clothing, enclosure, or other material. Pay attention to dilution, dwell time, extraction, colorfastness, and drying instructions.
- Test an inconspicuous area. Check for dye transfer, discoloration, finish damage, or a lasting scent. Allow the test area to dry before judging the result.
- Apply enough product to reach the contamination. A shallow mist may work for a small surface smear but not for urine that has soaked into carpet backing or padding. Do not saturate a material that cannot safely tolerate moisture.
- Allow the stated dwell time. Enzymatic products need contact with the organic residue. Do not immediately wipe away a treatment unless the label tells you to do so.
- Blot, rinse, or extract only as directed. Some products are wiped away; others are extracted after treatment. Follow the specific instructions instead of applying a generic rinse routine.
- Dry completely. Keep people and pets away until the area is dry. Ventilation can help, but do not use damaging heat simply to accelerate drying.
- Reassess after drying. If odor remains, repeat according to the label. A persistent odor may indicate that the contamination is below the treated surface or that another accident has not been located.
Safety rules for homes with pets
The ASPCA says most enzyme-based cleaners tend to cause mild stomach upset if ingested, but that does not make them appropriate for drinking, licking, or unrestricted contact. Store all cleaning products out of reach, keep them away from eyes and mouths, follow the label, and allow treated areas to dry before pets return.
Do not casually combine enzyme cleaners with bleach, ammonia, disinfectants, or other cleaning chemicals. A second product may interfere with the biological formula, create irritating vapors, damage a surface, or introduce an unnecessary exposure risk. Use one product according to its directions, remove residue as directed, and only use another product after the area has been appropriately cleaned and the labels allow it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For cat accidents, avoid ammonia-based cleaners. Cat urine already contains ammonia, and an ammonia-like odor may attract a cat back to the same location. An enzymatic cleaner is more appropriate for breaking down the organic residue, provided it is used on a compatible surface and reaches the complete source.
None of the products in this guide should be treated as a universal disinfectant or as “non-toxic” in every exposure scenario. If a pet has swallowed cleaner, has eye or skin irritation, or is showing signs of illness, contact a veterinarian or an appropriate poison-information service and have the product label available.
Why Angry Orange is not on this list
Angry Orange’s enzyme stain removers are excluded from this current recommendation list. The research for this guide identifies a 2026 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall covering specified Angry Orange Enzyme Stain Remover products sold from March 2019 through December 2025. The notice instructed consumers to stop using affected products and seek a refund.
Check the current official recall notice if you own one of those products. Do not substitute a recalled product into a cleaning routine unless a future official notice clearly identifies a distinct, unaffected product.
What to do when the odor will not go away
- Confirm the location. Check nearby carpet edges, baseboards, furniture legs, mats, bedding, and adjacent rooms. A recurring smell may come from a second accident.
- Determine how far the liquid traveled. Carpet padding and subfloor can retain urine after the surface appears clean.
- Check whether the product reached that depth. If not, repeat with a label-approved application or use a professional cleaner experienced with pet urine.
- Do not keep adding fragrance. Fragrance can make the room smell different without removing the residue.
- Escalate when the material is damaged. Saturated pad, swollen laminate, stained upholstery foam, or contaminated porous construction material may need replacement or specialized remediation rather than more consumer spray.
Final buying recommendations
- Buy Rocco & Roxie if you want the most versatile one-bottle starting point for common pet messes across carpet, upholstery, bedding, crates, cars, and other pet areas.

- Buy Biokleen Bac-Out if a live-culture bio-enzymatic formula is your priority and citrus scent is acceptable.
- Buy Kids ‘N’ Pets if you need broad household coverage, including furniture, mattresses, hard floors, pet beds, and some laundry uses.
- Buy Simple Green for a straightforward dog-and-cat cleaner aimed at fresh and old stains.
- Buy ECOS if identified enzymes and Safer Choice certification are important, and lemon scent is acceptable.
- Buy BISSELL 77X7 only when your exact carpet-cleaner model supports it, especially the listed ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro.
- Buy EcoStrong when a gallon-size product suits a larger job and the desired variant is currently in stock.
- Buy Petzyme when you need an unusually broad list of household, vehicle, enclosure, and flooring applications.
- Buy Simple Solution Extreme when the main problem is a severe urine, feces, or vomit mess on carpet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best enzyme cleaner for cat urine?
Rocco & Roxie, Nature’s Miracle, EcoStrong, and Petzyme are strong candidates for cat urine because their stated uses or directions address deep odor treatment. The most important factor is applying enough product to reach the contaminated carpet backing or padding. If the odor persists after the area dries and is treated again according to the label, the pad or subfloor may be the real source.
Can I use enzyme cleaner on hardwood floors?
Only use a product on hardwood when the manufacturer explicitly lists that surface and the floor’s finish is compatible. Test an inconspicuous area first, avoid untreated wood unless the label specifically permits it, and do not leave excess liquid standing. Nature’s Miracle also sells a dedicated hard-floor formula, which should not automatically be confused with its general dog formula.
Can enzyme cleaner go in a carpet-cleaning machine?
Only when both the cleaning solution and the machine instructions allow it. BISSELL 77X7 is specifically listed for the ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro, while Kids ‘N’ Pets and EcoStrong provide machine-related information with their own restrictions. Never assume that every BISSELL, rental extractor, or other carpet machine is compatible.
Do enzyme cleaners disinfect pet accidents?
Do not assume so. Enzyme and bio-enzymatic cleaners are designed primarily to break down organic residue and reduce associated stains or odors. A product should be called a disinfectant or pathogen-killing cleaner only when its label and applicable regulatory claims specifically support that use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does cat urine smell return after cleaning?
The cleaner may not have reached the carpet pad, subfloor, upholstery foam, or another hidden part of the accident. A second accident may also be nearby. Locate the full area, apply a compatible product deeply enough to reach the source, allow complete drying, and repeat as directed. Persistent contamination may require removal or professional treatment of the affected material.
The Bottom Line
Best overall: Rocco & Roxie Stain & Odor Eliminator is the most versatile choice for households handling several kinds of pet messes and surfaces. Choose Nature’s Miracle for a widely available general dog-accident cleaner, BISSELL 77X7 for a compatible BISSELL machine, Biokleen for a live-culture product, and Simple Solution Extreme for a severe carpet mess. Whatever you buy, the result depends on matching the formula to the surface, reaching the full depth of the contamination, following the label, and allowing the area to dry before pets return.
