If your Stiebel Eltron Tempra Plus has no hot water, weak flow, lukewarm water, or a display code, start with the symptom-specific checks below. The manufacturer’s current Tempra Trend and Tempra Plus installation manual lists several possible causes; checks that involve opening the heater, electrical testing, or internal components should be left to a qualified professional. If basic checks do not solve the problem, contact Stiebel Eltron technical support before removing the unit from the wall.

Why is my Tempra Plus not producing hot water?

The manufacturer’s installation manual lists several possible causes: a tripped or switched-off breaker, flow below the heater’s activation threshold, a clogged filter screen or fixture, a blocked or non-spinning flow sensor, or reversed plumbing. Start with checks that do not require opening the unit.

  1. Check the associated circuit breakers. Confirm that the breakers supplying the heater are on. If a breaker trips again after being reset, stop and contact a qualified electrician or technical support rather than repeatedly resetting it.
  2. Check for restricted flow at the fixture. If the flow is weak, clean the faucet aerator or shower head. A clogged aerator or shower head can restrict flow enough to affect operation.
  3. Clean the heater’s filter screen. Follow the current manual’s guidance for accessing and cleaning the screen. Do not open the heater unless you are qualified and following the manufacturer’s safety procedure.
  4. Have the plumbing direction verified if the issue persists. The manual specifies cold-water entry on the right and hot-water exit on the left. A flow sensor that is clogged or does not spin is another possible cause, but diagnosis or repair inside the unit should go to a qualified technician.

These checks are based on the Stiebel Eltron Tempra Trend and Tempra Plus installation manual. A low activation flow, internal flow-sensor fault, or plumbing problem may need professional diagnosis.

Why is the hot-water flow restricted?

Low hot-water volume can result from a clogged filter screen or scale buildup on the heating elements. Clean the filter screen according to the manual. For suspected scale, the manual recommends descaling with a descaling solution; use the solution as directed and follow applicable service guidance. If you are unsure how to service the unit safely, contact a qualified technician.

  • Requires hard-wired 240 or 208-volt electric service, with a maximum draw of 28,800 watts at 240 volts or 21,600 watts at 208 volts
  • Requires 3 separate dedicated 40 amp breakers with 8 gauge copper wiring, and a minimum of 200 amp total service to the residence

Why is my Tempra Plus water not hot enough?

The manual identifies excessive water flow, low voltage, and a tripped safety thermal cutout as possible causes of insufficiently hot water.

  • Flow may be too high. Reduce the water flow and observe the heater’s front power light. The manual says to reduce flow until the power light stops blinking when excessive flow is the cause.
  • Supply voltage may be low or incorrect. Voltage measurement and any wiring or supply correction are electrical work for a qualified professional.
  • The safety thermal cutout may have tripped. It protects against excessively hot water. Before any reset procedure, turn off all circuit breakers connected to the heater. Do not attempt a reset with power on. If the cutout trips repeatedly, stop resetting it and contact technical support; repeated trips may point to a technical fault.

What does a Tempra Plus error code mean?

Use the code table in the current installation manual for the exact Tempra Plus model or generation installed. The manual describes error reporting for sensor and control issues, and some faults require technical support. Do not infer a code’s meaning from an older Tempra manual or from an unverified list; consult the matching manual and follow its stated next step.
