If the joint opens but a dowel stays stuck, soften the bond with a few drops of alcohol, then extract the dowel carefully. Work up to drilling an access hole or using a screw only when gentler methods fail; heat and steam can affect the finish and are not suitable for every adhesive.
Start by separating the joint gently
- Position a bar spreader so it pushes the joined pieces apart without bearing on a fragile edge or finished surface.
- Apply steady pressure and tap the joint with a non-marring mallet to help it release. Increase pressure gradually rather than twisting or wrenching the pieces.
- As the joint opens, check whether the dowels are withdrawing with one piece or remaining lodged in the other. Stop if the wood begins to split or the surrounding material deforms.
WOOD Magazine recommends this controlled approach as the first step in its dowel-joint repair sequence. A tightly bonded joint may not separate without damage, so avoid treating force as a guarantee of a clean repair.
If a dowel remains stuck in its hole
Soak the bond first
Apply a few drops of alcohol where the dowel meets the hole and let it soak for a few minutes. Then try easing the dowel out with pliers or side cutters, using a controlled grip rather than crushing the surrounding wood.
Drill an access hole if soaking is not enough
If the dowel is still firmly lodged, drill a small access hole into the dowel and add alcohol inside it. Allow time for the liquid to soak in, then try extracting the dowel with pliers or side cutters. Keep the drilling centered on the dowel and proceed cautiously to avoid damaging the hole or the piece.

Use a screw when the dowel is broken too short to grip
For a dowel broken close to the surface, drive a small screw into the remaining piece, leaving enough of the screw exposed to grip. Pull the screw and dowel out with a claw hammer, protecting the wood under the hammer head as needed.
Should you use heat or steam?
Heat or steam may help, but the right approach depends on the adhesive and the finish. Titebond says that increasing the temperature of cured Original, II, and III wood-glue joints with a heat gun or blow dryer reduces bond strength; steam from an iron may also work. The company cautions that steam will not remove glue from the wood pores. See Titebond’s glue FAQ.

Woodcraft notes that antique furniture joints typically used hide glue, while more recent furniture may use yellow PVA glue, and suggests heat or steam as ways to loosen joints. High heat can affect the finish. The actual adhesive and finish cannot be identified reliably from appearance alone, so use heat or steam cautiously and test in an inconspicuous area if possible. Do not assume either method will release every joint cleanly.

After removing the dowel, clear leftover glue and chips by turning a twist drill bit of the same diameter by hand. WOOD Magazine warns that using a powered drill for this cleanup can change the hole’s shape. If you are reassembling the joint, the guide describes replacing old dowels with fluted dowels coated with glue and applying glue inside the holes.
