Most television problems can be narrowed down without opening the set. First determine whether the failure is in the TV, power supply, remote, HDMI cable, source device, network, or audio equipment. If the TV can display its own Home screen, volume bar, or input label, begin with the connected equipment and selected input. If it cannot display any menu after external devices are disconnected and basic power checks are complete, arrange qualified service.
Start with the symptom

The five-minute universal checklist
- Observe exactly what happens. Note error messages, standby-light behavior, whether sound works, and whether the problem affects one input or everything.
- Check power. Confirm the TV is plugged in, the power strip or surge protector is switched on, and the outlet works with another device. Temporarily connect the TV directly to the wall.
- Try the physical TV button. If it works while the remote does not, replace the remote batteries and check Bluetooth pairing or re-pairing instructions for the exact model.
- Test the TV’s interface. Press Home or Volume. An on-screen menu, volume bar, or input label suggests that the display interface is working, although it does not rule out an intermittent hardware fault. LG describes this as a useful isolation test in its no-picture and no-sound guidance.
- Disconnect external equipment. Remove HDMI, USB, antenna, Ethernet, optical, and other audio connections. Then test the TV by itself, using a built-in app or tuner if available.
- Reseat cables. Reconnect the power and signal cables firmly. Look for bent connectors, damaged insulation, or an HDMI port that has been strained by a heavy or side-loaded cable.
- Power-reset the system. Turn off the TV and source device. Unplug them, wait briefly, reconnect them, and allow the source device to restart. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure rather than relying on undocumented button combinations.
TV will not turn on
Press the TV’s physical power button, replace or test the remote batteries, verify the outlet, bypass the power strip, and disconnect every external device. Then use the model-specific reset procedure. For example, Sony BRAVIA help material describes holding the remote’s Power button for approximately five seconds until the TV restarts. LG’s general procedure is to unplug the TV, hold its physical Power button for about 10 seconds, reconnect power, and turn it on. See the relevant Sony restart guidance and LG procedure.

A standby light that is absent, steady, blinking, or flashing can mean different things on different models. Record the exact pattern and search the support page for the full model number. Sony treats abnormal LED behavior as a separate troubleshooting path. If the TV remains dead with a known-good outlet and all accessories disconnected, seek manufacturer, authorized, or qualified technician service.
Sound but no picture
Press Home or Volume. If the TV’s menu or volume indicator appears, concentrate on the source device, selected input, HDMI cable, receiver, or set-top box. Turn off the source, disconnect its power briefly, reconnect it, reseat both ends of its HDMI cable, and test another HDMI input and known-good cable. Try a built-in app or tuner: if that works while one HDMI source does not, the external source or connection is more likely responsible.

If there is sound but no TV menu, the symptom is consistent with an internal display fault such as backlight or panel hardware, but it is not a confirmed diagnosis. LG advises requesting repair when the TV cannot display its own channel or HDMI information; see its sound-but-no-picture guidance.
Picture but no sound
- Check mute and volume.
- Confirm sound is not being sent to Bluetooth headphones, an AV receiver, soundbar, or optical output.
- Check the TV’s audio-output setting and the source device’s audio format.
- For ARC or eARC, confirm that both devices use the correct HDMI ports and that the connection is secure.
- Test a built-in app or antenna channel.
- Run the TV’s built-in sound test if available, then power-reset the TV and audio equipment.
Menu names vary. Older Samsung manuals show an example path of Menu → Support → Self Diagnosis → Sound Test, but verify the path for your model using Samsung Support. A picture working does not prove that the source and audio hardware are both working correctly.
“No Signal” message
“No Signal” usually means the TV is receiving no usable signal from the selected input, not that the entire television is dead. Select the correct HDMI or antenna input, turn on the connected device, and confirm that its cable is plugged into the same HDMI port shown on screen. Reseat the cable, try another input and cable, and restart the source.

If a receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter, or capture device is in the chain, connect the source directly to the TV temporarily. For cable or satellite, check whether the box’s own menus appear. For an antenna, inspect the coaxial cable, splitter, amplifier, and channel scan. LG’s input and set-top-box checklist follows this same isolation principle.
HDMI troubleshooting
HDMI failures can result from the wrong input, a loose or damaged cable, a bad port, incompatible resolution or refresh-rate settings, HDR or audio-format conflicts, HDMI-CEC commands, or interference from an intermediate device. Isolate the system in this order:
- Turn off the TV and source.
- Disconnect every other HDMI device.
- Connect one source directly to the TV with a short, known-good cable.
- Try another HDMI input.
- Test the source on another display, if available.
- Test another source on the suspect TV input.
- Reconnect receivers, soundbars, switches, and other devices one at a time.
Do not assume that an “HDMI 2.1” label guarantees every feature. Compatibility depends on the source, display, cable quality and length, and selected video mode. Samsung’s troubleshooting material also notes that its HDMI cable test is intended for cables shorter than six feet; consult the Samsung guide for model-specific tools.

Smart-TV apps and network problems
Separate a TV network problem from an individual app problem and a service or account problem. Try another app, check whether other household devices have internet access, restart the router and TV, sign out and back into the affected app, update the app and TV software, and reinstall the app if the platform permits it. Check the TV’s date and time and try Ethernet if Wi-Fi interference is suspected.
Do not factory-reset the TV just because one streaming service fails. Operating systems and menu labels differ among Samsung, LG, Sony, and other models, so use the exact model’s support instructions.
Remote does not work
Replace the batteries and test close to the TV with no obstruction. Confirm pairing if the remote uses Bluetooth or voice control. Use the TV’s physical buttons to determine whether the TV itself responds. A remote may control the TV menus but not a receiver or cable box, or another device may be intercepting commands; check the remote-control setup for each component.

Dim, flickering, tinted, or distorted picture
Check whether the defect appears in the Home menu, every input, only one source, only after warming up, or only in HDR or a particular picture mode. Temporarily disable energy-saving and ambient-light features, reset picture settings, and test a built-in app. Photograph the problem on a solid-color or test screen, especially if it is intermittent.
Permanent lines across all sources, a large dark region, uniform discoloration, a cracked panel, a picture that briefly appears and disappears, or no on-screen menu despite sound are consistent with internal display hardware trouble. They do not identify a specific failed board without technician testing. Do not press the panel or open the enclosure.

Disconnect every external device and restart the TV. Check for blocked ventilation, sleep timers, energy-saving settings, unstable power, faulty remote commands, and HDMI-CEC device-control commands. Temporarily disable timers and HDMI-CEC, update the software through the official support path, and test built-in apps.

Never disable thermal protection or place the TV in an enclosed cabinet while testing. If it continues restarting with nothing connected, record when it happens and seek service; an internal power or main-board fault is possible.
Updates, picture resets, and factory resets

Use firmware only from the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model and regional version. Do not install software intended for a similar-looking model. If trouble began after an update, record the software version and date before resetting the TV. Sony’s documentation states that a factory reset deletes TV data and settings, including network information, Google-account information, and installed apps. Follow the model-specific Sony reset guidance or the equivalent instructions from LG or Samsung.
What is safe to do at home?
Most readers can safely test outlets, replace remote batteries, reseat cables, change inputs, restart the TV and connected equipment, clean exterior ventilation openings, and record symptoms. Do not open the rear cover or attempt power-board, capacitor, backlight-strip, panel, board-level soldering, or HDMI-port repairs unless you are trained and have the correct model-specific service documentation. Unplug the TV and seek qualified service immediately for smoke, sparks, burning odor, overheating, liquid intrusion, fire or surge damage, or visible impact damage.

Repair or replace?
Consider the TV’s age, size, panel type, picture quality, warranty status, parts availability, diagnostic and labor fees, repair warranty, risk of repeat failure, and the cost and features of a comparable replacement. Loose cables, incorrect inputs, remote batteries, frozen streaming boxes, network problems, and temporary software issues are usually favorable for DIY troubleshooting. Power boards, main boards, backlights, HDMI ports, speakers, and control boards may be repairable, depending on the model.
A cracked panel, extensive liquid damage, severe burn-in, unavailable parts, or a quote approaching the price of a comparable replacement is often a poor economic repair. That is not universal: an expensive, unusually large, or high-end television may justify work that would not make sense for a basic set. Check the manufacturer warranty, retailer protection plan, home insurance terms, and any repair warranty before paying out of pocket.
Information to give a repair provider
- Brand and complete model number.
- Approximate purchase date and warranty status.
- Exact symptom and any error message.
- Whether the Home screen, volume bar, or input label appears.
- Whether built-in apps or live TV work.
- Which inputs and connected devices fail.
- Standby-light color and flashing pattern.
- What changed immediately beforehand, such as a storm, outage, update, relocation, or new HDMI device.
- Every troubleshooting step already attempted.
- Photos or video of intermittent lines, flickering, shutdowns, or indicator lights.
Manufacturer support is the best first stop for an in-warranty or model-specific problem: LG Support, Sony Support, and Samsung Support. Local services may offer diagnostics, but confirm television acceptance, transport requirements, pricing, parts, and warranty terms. A free diagnostic does not necessarily mean a free repair.
