You do not need a professionally installed alarm system to make a home harder to enter, easier to monitor, and safer during an emergency. The best low-cost improvements layer physical resistance, detection, visibility, privacy, and outage resilience.
Use “less than dinner out” as a flexible budget guide rather than a fixed promise: the upgrades below are grouped roughly by under $10, $10–$25, $25–$50, and $50–$100. Prices vary by country, seller, tax, shipping, installation, and promotion; commercial prices cited here were observed around August 16, 2026, and may change.

Start with the weak points, not the shopping list
Walk around the property before buying anything. Check the front and back doors, attached garage, sliding patio door, ground-floor and basement windows, side gates, and approaches hidden by fences, shrubs, or poor lighting. A $5 window rod protecting a vulnerable opening can provide more practical value than a $100 camera aimed at the wrong part of the property.

Classify each improvement honestly:
- Delay: makes entry slower, harder, or noisier.
- Detect: identifies movement or an opened entry point.
- Deter: may discourage an opportunistic trespasser.
- Notify: sends a local or phone alert.
- Safety: helps occupants respond during an emergency.
- Privacy: reduces visibility into the home.
None of these products guarantees that a break-in will not occur. Their value comes from combining layers and addressing the property’s actual vulnerabilities.

18 affordable home-security upgrades
1. Reinforce the exterior-door strike plate
Approximate cost: Under $10 for suitable screws; about $15–$25 for some reinforcement kits.
Primary benefit: Delay.
Replace a small or weak strike plate with a heavier plate designed for the door and frame. Where the construction permits, use fasteners long enough to reach structural framing rather than relying only on short screws in the trim.
Do not blindly install 3-inch screws. Check for wiring and plumbing, confirm that the latch and deadbolt align, and make sure the frame is not split or loose. A reinforced strike plate cannot compensate for a poorly anchored frame. Renters should obtain landlord approval before modifying the door.

The original list and price signals are discussed by Gadget Review.
2. Reinforce the hinge side of an outward-opening door
Approximate cost: Under $25.
Primary benefit: Delay.
Outward-opening doors may be attacked at the hinges rather than the lock. Depending on the door and frame, longer hinge screws, hinge-security studs, or hinge-side reinforcement can reduce that vulnerability.
Inspect what is already installed before buying hardware: some doors have security studs, and some frames cannot safely accept longer fasteners. This is construction-dependent work; when in doubt, ask a qualified contractor to inspect the frame.
3. Add a door wedge or security bar
Approximate cost: Under $10 for a rubber wedge; about $15–$50 for stronger portable bars.
Primary benefit: Delay and safety.
A rubber wedge is inexpensive and renter-friendly. A floor-braced security bar or door jammer can provide stronger resistance when it is compatible with the door and installed as directed.
These devices are useful at night, while traveling, or when occupants are sheltering inside during a suspected intrusion. They are not substitutes for a locked exterior door, a properly installed deadbolt, or emergency services. Never use one in a way that prevents rapid escape or violates fire-safety requirements.
4. Upgrade or correctly adjust the deadbolt
Approximate cost: About $10–$50, depending on the lock and installation.
Primary benefit: Delay.

Check that the bolt extends fully into the strike, the door frame is solid, and the lock can be operated quickly from inside.
Do not describe any ordinary residential lock as pickproof or impenetrable. Also check local fire and egress requirements, especially in apartments, bedrooms, and other sleeping areas.
5. Install a peephole or door viewer
Approximate cost: About $7–$12 for a conventional peephole; roughly $30–$45 for some electronic viewers.
Primary benefit: Detection and privacy.
A conventional peephole lets residents verify a visitor without opening the door. A wide-angle or electronic viewer may be easier to use for children, older adults, or people with mobility limitations.

Drilling may be prohibited by a lease or multifamily-building rules. Ask permission first, and never open the door simply because someone claims to be a delivery worker or service provider.
6. Secure sliding windows with a fitted rod
Approximate cost: Under $10–$25 per opening.
Primary benefit: Delay.
A wooden dowel, metal rod, or manufacturer-approved track bar can prevent a sliding window from moving. Measure the closed track and cut the rod so it cannot be lifted out while the window is shut.
Test the fit, but preserve a safe emergency-release method wherever required. Remove the rod before opening the window. A bar that is too short, too thin, or easy to lift out provides little more than a visual signal.

Approximate cost: About $10–$40.
Primary benefit: Delay.
Use a purpose-built patio-door bar or correctly fitted auxiliary lock. Also inspect the original latch, frame, rollers, and track; a new bar does not repair a damaged or badly aligned door.
Do not block a required escape route. Everyone in the household should know how to remove the device quickly from inside.
8. Apply security film to vulnerable glass
Approximate cost: About $25–$100 for kits; professional systems can cost more.
Primary benefit: Delay and safety.

Security film can help hold cracked glass together, but film alone does not turn ordinary glass into impact-resistant glazing. Its performance depends on film thickness, adhesive, installation quality, and—critically—whether the perimeter is anchored to the frame.
Good candidates include sidelights, low windows near doors, and glass panels that can be reached without crossing a barrier. 3M’s safety and security film information describes film as part of a glass-protection system, supporting careful wording rather than a promise that generic peel-and-stick film prevents entry.
9. Install stand-alone window alarms
Approximate cost: Under $10–$25 for basic units or multipacks.
Primary benefit: Detect and warn.
Peel-and-stick alarms sound when a window opens or the sensor separates. They are useful where you want a local warning without Wi-Fi, an account, or a monitoring subscription.

Check battery life, test the alarm monthly, and expect some false triggers. Advertised ratings such as 110–120 dB vary by product and distance and should not be treated as independent acoustic measurements. These alarms usually do not notify a phone or monitoring center.
10. Add smart door and window contact sensors
Approximate cost: About $20–$50 for one or several sensors, depending on the system.
Primary benefit: Detect and notify.
Smart contact sensors can send phone alerts when a protected opening changes state. Before buying, determine whether the sensor requires a hub, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Amazon Sidewalk, a proprietary network, or a paid plan.

For example, Ring’s current sensor information describes configurations that may operate without a conventional base station but can depend on Amazon Sidewalk coverage or a Ring Alarm base station. Also ask what happens when the internet, power, phone, or cloud service is unavailable. A local siren can be more useful than a phone notification nobody sees.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute11. Add a glass-break sensor where it fits
Approximate cost: About $25–$50.
Primary benefit: Detect.
A glass-break sensor can supplement contact sensors, especially on fixed windows that do not open. It should not be the only protection for a glass door or window.
Many units respond to particular sound patterns and can miss unusual breakage or false-alarm from loud noises. Curtains, furniture, distance, and room acoustics affect performance. A contact sensor is usually the more direct choice for an opening window.
12. Install motion-activated exterior lighting
Approximate cost: About $10–$50.
Primary benefit: Deter and improve visibility.
Place lights near front and back doors, side paths, garage doors, basement stairs, and gates. Aim them to illuminate approaching people without blinding residents, neighbours, drivers, or cameras.
More brightness is not automatically more security. Excessive glare can create deep shadows beyond the lit area and make cameras less useful. Lighting should reduce concealment, not simply flood the property.
13. Choose solar motion lights for outage resilience
Approximate cost: About $20–$40 for many consumer models.
Primary benefit: Visibility and outage resilience.
Solar lights can continue operating during a grid outage if their batteries are charged and healthy. Performance depends on sun exposure, shade, weather, dirt, winter conditions, and battery age.
Choose a model with a detection zone that covers the approach rather than one that activates only when someone is already at the door. Test it after installation and periodically clean the panel.
14. Add a driveway or perimeter alert
Approximate cost: About $25–$50.
Primary benefit: Detect and notify.
Driveway alarms are particularly useful for long driveways, rural properties, side approaches, or homes where the front door is far from the street.
Cars, wildlife, wind-blown vegetation, and weather can trigger false alerts. Hills, walls, metal objects, and wireless range affect performance. The device detects movement; it does not identify intent or replace a locked entry point.

Primary benefit: Detect, notify, and document.
Place a camera where it supports a real decision: a front-door approach, package area, driveway, side gate, garage, or rear entry. Avoid pointing it into neighbouring homes or private interiors.

Compare local recording with cloud storage, subscription requirements, night performance, motion zones, two-factor authentication, battery life, power backup, offline behaviour, and audio controls. Ring’s current catalogue illustrates the range of battery, wired, solar, doorbell, indoor, outdoor, and floodlight products, but a product catalogue is not an independent performance test.
A visible camera may deter some opportunistic trespassers, but do not promise that cameras consistently prevent crime. A camera aimed at the wrong location, easily stolen, or unusable during an outage may add less value than better door hardware.

Approximate cost: About $10–$25.
Primary benefit: Deter.
A sign can communicate that a property has an alarm or camera system, but it should not falsely represent a service that does not exist. Pair signage with a real device whenever possible.
Fake cameras and signs offer no detection, evidence, or emergency notification. They may discourage some opportunistic offenders, but more experienced intruders may recognize them.
17. Improve privacy with curtains, blinds, or privacy film
Approximate cost: About $10–$50.
Primary benefit: Privacy and deterrence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Window coverings can reduce the ability to inspect valuables, occupants, and household routines from outside. Reflective film is not reliably “one-way”: it generally works when the exterior is brighter than the interior, and the effect can reverse at night when indoor lights are on.
Blackout curtains improve privacy and sleep but do not stop entry. Treat foil as a temporary blackout measure, not a finished security upgrade.
18. Add emergency lighting and glow markers
Approximate cost: Under $10–$25.
Primary benefit: Safety.
Use stick-on lights or glow tape on stair edges, hallways, door handles, electrical panels, fire extinguishers, and routes to exits. These can help occupants navigate during a power failure or emergency.

Renter bundle
- Door wedge or removable security bar.
- Fitted sliding-window rod.
- Stand-alone window alarm.
- Battery-powered motion light for an allowed location.
- Curtain, blind, or privacy film improvement.
Avoid drilling, permanent film installation, exterior cameras, or lock changes without permission. Check the lease, building rules, and fire-safety requirements.
Homeowner bundle
- Strike-plate and frame inspection.
- Hinge-side reinforcement where appropriate.
- Sliding patio-door bar.
- Motion lighting at hidden approaches.
- Contact sensors on the most vulnerable doors and windows.
- A camera covering a genuine decision point.
Homeowners can also consider properly installed security-film systems, hardwired lighting, landscaping changes, and network improvements.
Outage-resilient bundle
- Mechanical door and window barriers.
- Stand-alone local alarm.
- Solar or battery lighting.
- Glow markers and spare batteries.
- Battery backup for networking equipment.
- Camera equipment with local recording, if cameras are needed.
Remember that a Wi-Fi camera may stop sending cloud alerts when power or internet service fails. A mechanical lock, local alarm, and charged flashlight do not depend on the cloud.
What not to buy first
- A fake camera instead of fixing a weak door: deterrence without resistance or evidence.
- A camera aimed at a low-risk area: coverage matters more than having another device.
- A cloud camera without checking the subscription: the initial price may not be the long-term cost.
- Security film without frame attachment: the installation system matters.
- An alarm nobody can hear or manage: advertised decibel figures are not a guarantee of useful warning.
- A hub-dependent sensor without a compatible hub: verify the ecosystem before purchasing.
Important safety, privacy, and installation checks
- Do not block required emergency exits with bars, wedges, rods, or furniture.
- Keep alarms manageable; every household member should know how to silence a false alert.
- Use strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication for connected devices.
- Install firmware updates and review cloud-retention settings.
- Disable audio or limit camera views when it is not needed.
- Respect neighbours’ privacy, shared hallways, local rules, and building policies.
- For thorny landscaping, consider maintenance, children, pets, accessibility, visibility, and local regulations. Plants should not conceal windows or obstruct escape routes.
- Do not rely entirely on a smartphone. Keep physical keys, spare batteries, flashlights, and a written emergency plan accessible.
A simple first-weekend plan
- Inspect: identify every reachable opening and hidden approach.
- Reinforce: address the weakest exterior door and sliding opening first.
- Illuminate: remove dark concealment without creating glare.
- Detect: add local alarms or sensors to the highest-risk openings.
- Verify: test locks, alarms, lights, notifications, batteries, and emergency exits.
- Review: confirm that subscriptions, hubs, internet dependencies, and privacy settings match your needs.
For a more complete system, Ring’s alarm-system range and custom alarm configuration show the typical progression from individual sensors to a coordinated system. SimpliSafe’s cost document illustrates why a full alarm package generally exceeds the small-upgrade budget. The right next step is the one that solves the property’s most serious weakness, not necessarily the one with the most features.
