To wall-mount a computer monitor safely, first confirm that the display has a compatible VESA mounting pattern—or an approved adapter—then choose a mount rated for the monitor’s weight and depth. Fasten the wall plate to a suitable structure, normally the center of a wood stud or solid masonry, rather than assuming ordinary drywall anchors are adequate. Finally, attach the monitor with the correct screws and spacers, engage the safety lock, adjust the arm, and leave enough slack in the cables for movement.
This guide covers both low-profile fixed brackets and adjustable wall-mounted monitor arms. The safest installation depends on the monitor, mount, wall construction, and intended movement—not screen size alone.

1. Check whether your monitor can be wall-mounted
Look at the rear of the monitor for four threaded holes arranged in a square or rectangle. This is the VESA interface used by many monitor brackets and arms. The common smaller patterns are 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm, although larger displays may use patterns such as 100 × 200 mm, 200 × 200 mm, or a manufacturer-specific arrangement. Confirm the exact pattern in the monitor’s manual or specification sheet. ASUS also recommends using a bracket that complies with the display’s VESA specification and using the appropriate standoffs where required. See the ASUS VESA-mount guidance.
VESA compatibility is necessary, but it is not a universal guarantee. Check all of the following before buying a mount:

MOUNT PRO single monitor mount enjoy a lifetime of technical support if you have any questions.
- Weight: record the monitor’s weight without its original stand.
- VESA spacing: measure or verify the horizontal and vertical hole spacing.
- Rear depth: note whether the monitor is unusually deep, curved, or ultrawide.
- Recessed holes: determine whether spacers are needed to clear the rear housing.
- Screw specifications: verify diameter, thread, and maximum insertion depth.
- Stand removal: check whether the original stand or neck must be removed first.
Never force a screw into a VESA hole. An overlong screw can damage components inside the monitor, while a screw that is too short may not hold securely. The monitor manual and the mount instructions should determine the correct screw length.
If the monitor has no VESA holes
Do not drill into the monitor housing. Some displays can use a manufacturer-approved or model-specific universal VESA adapter, but the adapter must be mechanically secure and rated for the display. It must also avoid ventilation openings, controls, and ports. If no suitable adapter exists, use a desk stand, monitor riser, or desk-mounted arm instead.
A VESA adapter can also bridge different hole patterns. For example, an adapter such as the VIVO MOUNT-AD600B is designed to adapt smaller interfaces to larger patterns. It is not a substitute for checking the adapter’s load, clearance, and compatibility limits.
2. Choose the right monitor wall mount
| Mount type | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed, low-profile bracket | A clean installation that stays in one position | Little adjustment and difficult rear cable access |
| Tilt mount | Correcting viewing angle without needing full movement | Limited height, depth, and side-to-side adjustment |
| Articulating wall arm | Height, extension, swivel, rotation, or sit-stand use | More leverage, protrusion, cost, and adjustment |
| Dual-monitor wall mount | Two compatible displays | Higher load and structural demands |
| Desk-mounted arm | Renters, uncertain walls, or frequent repositioning | Requires a strong, suitable desk and uses desk space |
Fixed or low-profile bracket
Choose a fixed bracket when the screen will remain in one location and you want it close to the wall. It suits a relatively shallow, light monitor and gives the cleanest appearance. The trade-offs are limited height adjustment, restricted access to rear ports, and a more difficult removal process. Some low-profile systems use a wall plate and separate monitor brackets that are attached to the display before the display is hung on the plate; the Ergotron low-profile installation documentation illustrates this sequence.
Articulating wall arm
Use an arm when you need to pull the monitor toward you, move it for standing work, swivel it toward another seat, or rotate it between landscape and portrait orientation. An arm is more versatile, but it applies greater pull-out and torque forces to the wall. Monitor depth matters: a deep curved or ultrawide display can place more leverage on the arm than a shallow monitor of the same weight. Ergotron’s wall-mount guidance specifically identifies depth as a factor in effective capacity.
Never select an arm solely because its product page says it supports a particular screen size. The monitor’s actual weight, VESA pattern, depth, and the arm’s recommended reach must all match.
3. Measure before buying
Make a short installation record containing:
- Monitor weight without the stand
- Screen size and model
- VESA pattern
- Monitor depth, including the rear curve
- Desired distance from the wall
- Required movement: fixed, tilt, swivel, extension, sit-stand adjustment, or rotation
- Wall type: wood-stud drywall, metal-stud drywall, concrete, brick, block, paneling, or another surface
- Locations of outlets, data sockets, switches, and possible wiring or plumbing
Choose a mount whose weight rating exceeds the monitor’s real load and whose geometry suits the monitor. Screen-size ranges are only a rough compatibility filter. As examples, the VIVO MOUNT-V001A is listed for 17–32-inch displays, VESA 75 × 75 and 100 × 100 mm, and 4.4–19.8 lb; the Mount-It! MI-765 lists 13–32-inch displays, the same VESA patterns, and up to 19.8 lb. These figures are product examples, not a recommendation for every monitor or wall.
4. Check the wall before drilling
Drywall over a wood stud
For a typical drywall-over-wood-stud wall, fasten the wall plate into the center of a stud using the fasteners specified by the mount manufacturer. Locate the stud with a stud finder, then confirm its position with a small test hole or another appropriate method. Do not rely only on an edge reading from a stud finder.

A short, fixed bracket places less leverage on the wall than a fully extended arm. Even so, the mount’s instructions control the required fasteners and attachment points. If the desired screen position is between studs, consider a suitable wall track or securely attached backing board rather than placing a cantilevered arm in a weak or improvised installation. Ergotron discusses additional support and wall-track solutions where stud alignment is unsuitable in its wall-mount selection guidance.
Concrete, brick, or block
Use a masonry bit and anchors or masonry screws rated for the combined load. Follow the mount instructions for hole diameter, embedment depth, and dust removal. Do not substitute drywall anchors. Avoid mortar joints unless the manufacturer specifically permits them; sound masonry is generally the intended attachment surface.
Metal studs
Do not assume a metal stud provides the same support as a wood stud. A long articulating arm can create significant pull-out and torque forces. The installation may require structural reinforcement, a backing board, a specialized fastening method, or professional assessment. Follow the mount manufacturer’s approved method for metal-stud construction.
Drywall-only installation
Do not make a blanket assumption that drywall anchors are safe. Some purpose-designed mounts may specify a particular anchor system and load, but a monitor arm is a lever, not simply a picture hanging flat against a wall. For the common products covered by the manufacturer guidance here, the safer general approach is attachment to a wood stud or solid masonry. If the wall structure cannot be verified, choose a desk arm or obtain professional help.
Before drilling, check for concealed electrical cables and plumbing. Do not drill where the wall may contain services, and use appropriate caution around outlets, switches, and plumbing fixtures.
5. Tools and materials
Typical equipment includes:
- Stud finder
- Tape measure, pencil, masking tape, and level
- Drill and the correct wood or masonry bits
- Screwdriver or socket wrench
- Manufacturer-specified lag screws, masonry screws, or approved anchors
- Correct VESA screws and spacers
- Hook-and-loop straps or cable ties
- A clean padded surface for laying the monitor face-down
- A second person to help hold and hang the monitor
The hardware supplied with a mount is not automatically suitable for every wall. Use the hardware and tool sizes specified for your wall construction and the particular mount.
6. Step-by-step: install the monitor wall mount
Step 1: Read both manuals
Read the monitor manual and the mount manual before removing anything. Confirm the VESA pattern, screw size and depth, maximum weight, wall restrictions, number of fasteners, and whether the display attaches to the VESA plate before or after the plate is mounted. Manufacturer documentation may specify different screws for a particular monitor. Ergotron’s installation manual explains why monitor-specific screws and VESA details matter.

- Designed for VESA sized from 75X75 MM through 200x200 MM.
- Comfortable View with tilt range from +15° to -5°.
Step 3: Attach the VESA plate or brackets
Match the plate holes to the monitor’s threaded holes. Use the correct screws and add approved spacers if the holes are recessed. Tighten firmly, but do not strip the threads, crush the rear housing, or force a screw that bottoms out. Check that the plate is centered and oriented correctly.
Step 4: Choose and mark the position
Test the proposed position before drilling. Consider seated and standing viewing, desk height, glare from windows and lights, arm movement, power and video-cable access, outlets and switches, and the location of studs. Make sure the monitor will not hit a wall, shelf, desk, or nearby object when the arm is extended or rotated.
Step 5: Locate the structural attachment
For wood studs, mark the stud center. For masonry, select a sound section of concrete, brick, or block and follow the anchor spacing specified by the mount. If the required attachment point is not available, stop and change the mounting plan rather than improvising with unsuitable anchors.

Step 6: Mark and level the wall plate
Hold the wall plate in position and mark its holes with the plate level. Confirm that the marks are correctly spaced and that the proposed screen height and arm reach still work. A level wall plate makes final adjustment much easier.
Step 7: Drill the pilot holes
Drill square to the wall using the specified diameter and depth. For masonry, clear dust as directed by the anchor instructions. Keep the holes clean and do not enlarge them accidentally. If you encounter unexpected resistance or suspect a concealed service, stop and reassess.
Step 8: Fasten the wall plate
Start all fasteners before tightening. Check the plate with a level, then tighten evenly. Do not overtighten and crush drywall or strip the stud. When finished, the plate should sit firmly against the wall without rocking, gaps, or movement.
Step 9: Hang or attach the monitor
Use a second person for a large, heavy, or ultrawide monitor. Depending on the mount, lift the display onto the wall plate, slide the VESA plate into the arm, or engage the bracket’s hanging mechanism. Make sure the plate is fully seated.

Step 11: Adjust arm tension
Adjust a gas-spring or articulated arm only after the monitor is attached. If the screen rises, drops, sags, or slowly moves, use the tension adjustment described in the mount manual. Do not force the mechanism beyond its adjustment range. A monitor that cannot stay in position may be too heavy, too deep, or too far extended for the arm.
Step 12: Connect and route cables
Connect power and display cables before pushing the monitor fully back. Leave a gentle service loop so movement does not pull on the ports. Secure cables in the arm’s clips or with hook-and-loop straps, avoid tight bends at HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, and power connectors, and make sure the cables are long enough for the arm’s full intended extension. Ergotron notes that moving wall-mounted systems may require extra-long power, USB, or video cables; see this wall-arm example.
Do not run mains-voltage power cords inside the wall unless the installation uses a code-compliant method. Use suitable surface routing or a qualified electrician for concealed power work.
Step 13: Test the installation
Check every wall fastener and VESA screw. Gently test the wall plate for movement, then move the arm through its intended range. Confirm that the monitor does not drift or sag, the safety lock remains engaged, and the cables do not pull on the display. Recheck the installation after several hours or the next day.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. How high should a wall-mounted monitor be?
There is no single correct height for every desk and user. As a starting point, position the top edge near seated eye level and adjust until your neck remains neutral rather than tilted upward or downward. Account for screen size, desk height, glasses, reclined posture, and whether the monitor will also be used while standing.
A fixed bracket should be positioned carefully because it offers little correction afterward. An articulating arm makes adjustment easier, but it still needs enough wall clearance and cable slack to move safely.
8. Troubleshooting common problems
The monitor has no VESA holes
Look for a manufacturer-approved adapter designed for that display. If the adapter cannot attach securely or would block ventilation and ports, use a desk stand or desk arm instead. Never drill the housing.

The monitor sags or the arm slowly drops
Support the monitor before making major adjustments. Check arm tension, actual monitor weight, rear depth, and arm reach. If adjustment cannot hold the display, remove it and use a mount with greater effective capacity.
The wall plate is pulling away
Stop using the monitor immediately and support or remove it. Possible causes include missed studs, unsuitable anchors, damaged wall material, loose or short fasteners, or excessive arm leverage. Do not simply add more drywall anchors without correcting the structural problem.
The monitor is crooked
Check that the wall plate is level, the VESA plate is oriented correctly, and the display is fully seated. Then inspect the arm adjustment and the wall surface for unevenness.

The cables are too short or pull on the ports
Use longer cables and leave a gentle service loop. Test the full movement range before securing the final cable route.
The stud is not where the monitor needs to go
Consider a wall track, correctly installed backing board, a different wall location, or a desk-mounted arm. Do not force a long arm into an inadequate single-point attachment.
The monitor touches the wall
Leave clearance for ventilation, connectors, the rear housing, curvature, and arm movement. The monitor’s manual controls the required clearance; manufacturer examples are not universal. LG, for example, provides model-specific installation guidance that includes a clearance example in its monitor installation guidance.
9. When a wall mount is not the best choice
Use a desk arm, monitor stand, wall track, backing board, or professional installer when:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The wall structure cannot be verified.
- The wall has metal studs without suitable reinforcement.
- The monitor is unusually heavy, deep, or wide.
- You cannot safely drill into masonry.
- The desired position does not align with a suitable structural attachment.
- The monitor’s mounting holes, rear housing, or adapter options are incompatible.
- You rent and cannot make a properly approved wall installation.
A desk arm may be the better solution when the desk is sturdy, rear clearance is available, and the screen must be repositioned frequently. Wall mounting is not automatically safer or more practical simply because it frees desk space.
