Tata Steel and the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) have announced a three-year UK–India research and innovation partnership focused on sustainable, recycled and circular structural materials. Delivered through RAEng’s Transforming Systems through Partnership (TSP) programme, it is expected to support up to 15 co-led projects, with grant-holder support due to begin in April 2027. The announcement sets out the partnership’s funding and broad aims, but names no selected projects or application timetable.
What the Tata Steel–RAEng partnership will support
Announced in Mumbai on October 12, 2026, the partnership aims to increase the use of sustainable, recycled and circular structural materials and help research move toward practical, industrial or entrepreneurial impact. Each project is intended to be co-led by a UK and an Indian academic or research partner. The announcement describes a broad remit rather than specifying eligible materials, technical work packages or chosen projects.

What support projects may receive
Tata Steel says successful projects will have access to industrial expertise, mentorship from senior staff, networking, and company laboratories and facilities. Mentoring and incubation support may also be available for research with commercial or spin-out potential; the type of support is expected to depend on project needs. These are planned forms of support, not guarantees of a particular facility, mentor or incubation package for every awardee.
Alongside the grants, UK–India policy missions are intended to exchange knowledge and generate market intelligence on circularity and resilient supply chains for critical materials and minerals. The announcement does not provide further details about the missions’ schedule or participants.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Why industrial scale-up matters to construction materials
Circular materials research must bridge the gap between a promising result and material that can be reliably produced and used. In its consultation on a UK steel strategy, the UK Government describes national research and pilot capability while noting challenges in scaling projects and sustaining momentum between time-limited funding periods. It also identifies scrap-supply research involving Tata Steel and EMR as work supporting the Port Talbot electric arc furnace transition. That context helps explain the partnership’s emphasis on industrial input and pathways to practical impact; it is not an assessment of this new programme.

For construction, the broad subject matters because structural materials need to meet performance and supply requirements as well as circularity goals. The announcement does not specify construction applications, technical standards or measures for judging the projects’ environmental benefits, so no particular product or building use can yet be attributed to the grants.

Tata Steel’s circularity work provides context, not a forecast of grant results
Tata Steel’s corporate circularity materials describe work on scrap collection and shredding, increasing scrap charging in steelmaking, and reusing waste and by-products. Its examples include Tata Aggreto, manufactured aggregates made from steel slag, and Tata Nirman, a slag-fines product used in brickmaking. These company examples illustrate existing activity; they are separate from the future research projects.
Tata Steel reported clean-scrap charging of 6.6% in its Indian steel melting shops in FY 2021–22, compared with 4.8% in FY 2020–21. In its FY 2024–25 reporting, the company said it reduced waste sent to landfill by 81% against the previous year and achieved annual savings of ₹21.7 crore from muck reuse. These are company-reported operational figures for the periods stated, not expected outcomes of the UK–India partnership.

How the partnership relates to Tata Steel UK’s planned transition
Tata Steel UK says its transition to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking will put recycling at the centre of its UK operations and use UK-sourced scrap as a key raw material. The company reports that ironmaking at Port Talbot ceased in October 2024. It forecasts that its 3.2 Mtpa EAF will be commissioned in late 2027 or early 2028; this is a forward-looking company estimate, not a confirmed commissioning date.
The EAF transition is relevant background for research into scrap and circular steel, but the new programme’s announcement does not say that its grants will directly fund or deliver the Port Talbot transition. Nor should the planned EAF capacity be read as a result of the partnership.

What is not yet known
The October 2026 announcement does not state an application opening date, deadline, detailed eligibility rules or selected project topics. It also does not identify awardees or provide a project-by-project funding breakdown. Researchers and institutions should wait for formal call information before assuming they qualify or developing an application against specific technical criteria.
When comparing this opportunity with another research call, the practical questions will include the required UK–India partnership structure, topic eligibility, grant amount and duration, any co-funding expectation, access to industrial facilities and mentoring, and the route from research to real-world impact. The available announcement is not detailed enough to assess those criteria or make a meaningful comparison with another programme.
A separate earlier collaboration
Tata Steel’s 2023 collaboration with the Henry Royce Institute is a different programme and should not be confused with the 2026 UK–India partnership. That earlier work focused on medical materials, 2D materials and second-life materials, with recycling technologies integrated into materials development.
