Its base can attach directly to suitable iron or steel, while the included plate, bracket, screws and anchors allow installation on ordinary nonmagnetic walls.
That makes “install anywhere” useful shorthand—but not a literal promise. The camera still needs reliable Wi-Fi, periodic charging and a mounting solution appropriate to the surface and security risk.

What Tapo has actually unveiled
T3 reported on March 6, 2026, that the magnetic-base version had appeared quietly on TP-Link’s website, months after the solar-powered C460 KIT. The important change is the installation system, not a wholly new camera platform: this is the Tapo C460, a 4K battery camera with a magnetic base.
The standalone C460 is sold without the solar panel. Buyers can add TP-Link’s C460 KIT instead, which bundles the camera with Tapo A201 solar hardware and related accessories.

How the magnetic mount works
On iron or steel
The magnetic base can attach directly to a suitable iron or steel surface. This is the simplest option and is useful where a camera needs to be repositioned—for example, on compatible metal structures or temporary job-site installations.
On drywall, wood, brick or other nonmagnetic surfaces
The camera will not stick directly to ordinary drywall, wood, brick, aluminum or most other nonferrous materials. Use the supplied metal plate or bracket, mounting screws and anchors to create the fixed attachment point, then connect the magnetic base to it.
The package includes the camera, metal plate, magnetic base, USB adapter cable, six screws, six anchors, camera bracket, two mounting templates and a Quick Start Guide, according to TP-Link’s U.S. store listing.
For temporary or frequently moved coverage
The magnetic connection makes removal and repositioning convenient. It does not make the camera theft-proof or safe from knocks, vibration, falling branches or tampering. A high-risk location may need a more secure fixed camera, a second recording path or cloud backup.

Exact specifications and available hardware versions can vary by region. TP-Link’s support page currently identifies C460 V1.60 materials and warns that model and hardware-version availability differs by market.
Wire-free does not mean maintenance-free
The C460 does not need a permanent power cable while operating, but it still needs an initial charge and periodic recharging. TP-Link does not provide a single runtime figure that can be applied reliably to every installation. Battery life depends on motion activity, recording duration, Wi-Fi strength, live-view use, night lighting, temperature and whether 24/7 Capture is enabled.
A camera aimed at a busy street, sidewalk, swaying trees or a bright light may wake frequently and drain faster. TP-Link recommends avoiding those conditions where possible, lowering detection sensitivity, defining activity zones and scheduling recording or notifications. The optional Tapo A201 solar panel can reduce manual charging where the mounting position receives useful sunlight.
What about continuous recording?
TP-Link advertises 24/7 Capture for the C460, and its support materials include instructions for enabling the feature on Tapo battery cameras. However, continuous capture has a practical cost: it can consume substantially more battery power and storage than event-based recording. It should not be treated as equivalent to a continuously powered wired camera.

For a driveway, entrance or other high-traffic area where uninterrupted footage matters most, a wired camera may be the better construction choice. The C460 is more compelling when flexible placement and the absence of a power cable matter more than minimal maintenance.
Storage and subscription requirements
A cloud subscription is not required for the core local-storage setup. A compatible microSD card—up to 512GB—is required for local recording and is an additional purchase for the standalone U.S. package.
Tapo Care is optional and provides cloud storage and additional cloud-related notification features. Cloud footage can be valuable if someone steals or damages the camera, because a microSD card inside the camera may disappear with it. The trade-off is recurring cost, account dependence and sending footage to a cloud service.

- Check Wi-Fi at the final mounting position, not only beside the router.
- Avoid direct glare, strong backlighting and locations where water can pool around the mount.
- Do not rely on the magnet where falling ice, branches, heavy vibration or tampering could dislodge the camera.
- Respect local privacy and recording laws, especially when the camera views neighboring property or public areas.
- Keep the published temperature limits in mind: charging is specified for 32°F to 122°F, while operating is specified for -4°F to 113°F.
Basic installation sequence
- Charge the camera before installation.
- Install the Tapo app, pair the camera with a Tapo account and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Choose a position with useful coverage and sufficient wireless signal.
- On iron or steel, attach the magnetic base directly if the surface is suitable.
- On another surface, secure the supplied metal plate or bracket with appropriate anchors and screws.
- Attach the base, adjust the viewing angle and test the live view.
- Configure detection types, activity zones, notification schedules and recording preferences.
- Insert a compatible microSD card if local storage is preferred.
- Test night vision, notifications, two-way audio and the camera’s response to tampering before leaving it unattended.
App labels and firmware behavior may change as TP-Link updates its software, so follow the current instructions for the camera’s regional hardware version.

Price and availability
In the United States, TP-Link’s official store lists the standalone C460 at $129.99. The page displayed a temporary sale price of $122.99 when crawled on August 18, 2026; that discount should not be treated as a permanent price. Check the official buying page for current availability and pricing.
T3’s March 6 report cited launch pricing of £109.99 or $129.99 for one camera and £259.98 or $259.98 for a two-pack. Those figures and the reported promotional discount were time-sensitive and should be verified by shoppers in their own market.
C460 versus C460 KIT
| Priority | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Lowest initial cost and easiest repositioning | Standalone C460 |
| Permanent outdoor installation with useful sunlight | C460 KIT |
| Shaded location or indoor use | Standalone C460 with a charging plan |
| Manual charging is inconvenient | C460 KIT |
| Temporary placement on iron or steel | Standalone C460 |
| Nonstop recording with little maintenance | Consider a wired outdoor camera |
The C460 KIT adds Tapo A201 solar panels, panel brackets, extension wires, waterproof seals and other mounting hardware. Some kit configurations also list a 32GB microSD card. Solar charging is still dependent on the panel’s exposure, season and climate; it is not a guarantee of maintenance-free operation.
Who should buy the magnetic-base C460?
It is a strong fit for homeowners, renters and small businesses that need a wire-free camera at a location without a convenient outlet, want to move coverage occasionally or prefer local microSD recording. It can also suit a construction or renovation site where mounting positions change—provided the surface, Wi-Fi and theft risk are suitable.
It is a weaker fit for a busy, high-risk location where a removable camera could be stolen; a property with poor Wi-Fi; a shaded site where solar charging will be ineffective; or anyone who expects a magnet to hold on drywall or masonry without hardware. Buyers who want reliable nonstop recording should generally prioritize a wired system.
